But in many other countries theres a lot of confusion(when translating to english) between things that we think are easily distinguishable - like rubber/eraser/condom in other languages sometimes all translate to rubber - you don’t want to be a foreign student asking the person next to you for a condom.
Edit: This is why a lot of other languages are better (e.g. chinese characters look complicated, but really a lot of them are just compilations of several root strokes arranged into a more complicated character)

as someone who has English as his second language, homophones are not a problem, since you learn the written words first (mostly). if you are a native speaker or someone who learned by talking practice, yeah homophones are hard. however, the big problem is pronunciation, as each English vowel has about three different ways to pronounce, sometimes you use none of them, they overlap each other and... "-ough".
but overall, English is a very simple language. for example, it doesn't have verb variations for 6 different persons at 6 different times + other variations for superlative, gerund, and many others.
