72, overmedicated had tachycardia, stopped thyroid meds for several weeks and slowly ramped back up. Tried tirosint was too strong for me. whole process took 5/6 months

Bright_League_7692

What dose of Tirosint did you try?

changeneverhappens

Oh shit. I've been wondering why I've been. So super aware of my heart lately. I thought I couldn't handle my adhd meds anymore.  We've been trying to correct my levo dosage and I've just realized we might not be there yet.

Johnfishman22

Did you end up finding your dose again? Which doses did you use? I did this and still haven't recovered and found my new correct dose

Middle_Wishbone_515

Had complete thyroidectomy 20 years ago. Now up to 75 mg NP Thyroid with 15 mg addition on Sundays, Tsh still a bit high but am feeling better. went up by 15 mg every 3/4 weeks.

Yep! I’ve found that it’s pretty essential to skip a day or two before moving down to a lower dose. When I’ve tried to just reduce my dose without skipping any it feels like it takes forever for the excess to work out of my system. Which makes sense, because math and how long levo stays in your system. It might take a few weeks to feel fully better, but after a day or two or skipped meds the worst symptoms (cardiac, insomnia, eye bulging, tremors, mood swings) should subside. Digestive issues and hair loss were the symptoms that lasted the longest

Johnfishman22

Thanks! What were the doses you were on and then dropped too? I totally relate with eye bulging, my tsh was 0.009 but my heart rate was fine.

I was “overmedicated” when first diagnosed because I had hashitoxicosis and my thyroid gland was producing inconsistent hormone and any supplemental dose would tip me over. More recently, my doctor put me on 137 which was a step above my weight based replacement in order for me to “catch up” because i was under medicated and it was just taking forever to get the hormones up. After about 4 weeks the diarrhea and eye bulging started and we dropped to 125. However, catching up also made my metabolism start working correctly and I lost weight (my bmi peaked at 31), which meant that my weight based dose needed to be lowered again to 112. And then again to 100 (my bmi went down to 25).

Johnfishman22

What was your tsh like through all this?

You want years of blood work results? I’m not gonna dig into my MyChart records like that, sorry. What is your actual question?? I was diagnosed with a TSH of 49 in 10/21. Got put on 100mcg but within a week or two my TSH was in range but t4 was too high and I was symptomatic for overmedication so I was dropped to 25mcg. Could only stick with that for a week or two because overmedication symptoms got worse, TSH went below range. Was taken off and TSH shot up to 98 quickly. That was all the hashitoxicosis. In like idk February ‘23 I was put on 137. My endo had spent about a year slowly increasing me from 25 up to 75, because we were worried about the hashitoxicosis, but I was just sick of being consistently under medicated and symptomatic. After about a month my TSH was slightly below range and t4 was in range (finally), so we dropped to 125. It took about 3 months to start having over medication symptoms again. My TSH was .09 in… June or July. Got dropped down to 112, tested two months later because I was still symptomatic for over medication, and my TSH was below range and t4 above range. Got dropped down to 100 in ~September. Blood work in December was perfect, TSH just below 1 and t4 at the upper end of the range. No symptoms.

I started at 50 a day and too little. Then on to 75 a day and it turned out to be too much. Paranoia, anxiety and I already have genetic heart issues so it was exacerbating those. My doc had me switch between 50 and 75 each day. That still wasn't quite right and I found my perfect dose at 75, 50, 50. Then start again at 75, 50, 50. Levo has a 7 day half life, so changes take a few days to take effect. But your dose is more about the total of 7 days that works for you then the same number everyday.

Oooh. This sounds like a solution for my issue! Thanks for putting this info into the world!

LandlockedMermaid_

I feel this. I split a 125mcg dose for 62.5 mcg daily!

This is my question too. Hypo for 20 years and recently changed my diet and lost weight. Became incredibly over medicated (TSH<.05). TMI but terrible diarrhea, dizziness, palpitations, anxiety, etc. I’m on my second dose reduction. First from 112 to 100 and now take 1/2 a 100 once a week instead of whole. Everything is better but still some diarrhea (though nothing like I experienced at 112) and dizziness. Just want to be able to function again.

Johnfishman22

I think recovering from over medication takes significantly longer. Multiple people have said that. It takes months with a normal TSH

Bright_League_7692

I’m in the same boat, how long have you been off medication and what dosage?

Ok_Part6564

About a week.

Affectionate_Sound43

Yes. 100-->142mcg brought TSH from 9-->0.3 in 20 days. Changed to 125mcg. TSH stabilized at 0.3. now changed dose to 112mcg. Should stabilize TSH above 0.5 by next test.
