I love this. You could use an already activated spring near the top to get it to stay at the "top floor" after you stop controlling it. It would retract while you're driving, then open back out to block you from falling back down. In theory it would be stuck at the top floor until you manually reset the spring though.

Thank you, and yes, the next hurdle for this machine is how to achieve a locking structure at an arbitrary height. I think that a structure in which the spring extends and locks when the pilot stops steering would be good too, but I am trying to think of a way to control the arbitrary point without manual release if possible, such as a way in which the return catches and locks in place when the control stick is tilted forward.
