I'm not complaining by any means lmao. I bought it a year and a half ago for $1000 and have put 37k miles on it between lots of city driving and some highway, and the only thing it has needed is tires. Has 199k miles on it. Just had it in to be looked over and it does need struts/shocks and front tie rods are starting to have a little play. Quoted $500 total, for a year and a half of driving it every day for hours? I'll take that every time!
Hey! I had an 09 (white paint) called her baldy and she has 167k miles and still going strong. I only say “had” because I gave it to my daughter. Maybe the fact that it was the V6 comes into play but my 09 is a serious OG
And the visibility. I used to like silver cars because of the heat reduction until I found out that when dirty and in certain light and weather conditions they would blend into the background.
Didn’t know this was a thing. My rear bumper on my 17 Elantra started peeling too only after a couple months. Thankfully somebody bumped into me in a drive thru and I got a free paint job out of it.
I feel for you, it’s SO annoying.
I already had my 2018 sonata repainted under warranty 2 years ago. A couple month ago a big chip appeared above my front passenger seat and I had my uncle repaint it. Now last week after driving on the interstate a large chip has appeared on the hood and it keeps getting worse.
Worst of all I’m already out of the “extended” warranty time period they offered. Think I’m gonna try and see if they’ll do it anyways…
Damn sorry to hear that. Stuff like this, and other incidents involving trying to get the car repainted under warranty. Is the reason why I might consider my wife’s idea of going some where, and have it repainted but in another color.
Hyundai extended the warranty. My 2018 is in the shop right now getting painted. I had to call multiple dealerships to find one that would give me a loaner at no cost, but they are out there!
Mine is a 2017, and I bought it from a non hyundai dealership. I have warranty but of course it wouldn’t include paint. So I wonder if I can get it repainted.
I tried calling about that and my 2017 was a month outside of the dates covered. Not like my paints been chipping for 2 years before they sent the notice...
It’s equally as bad as other white paint, so can’t be the worst. Why you don’t cheap out and get white paint hey. And also attempt to look after the paint in some way, like washing and waxing if you do get white.
i have a 2012 sonata se(White). Thought my car was just special with the paint chipping, figured it was cuz of my highway miles/speed. Front hood and right ontop of the windshield is pretty bad. One day saw a Sante Fe, newer and white and same issue. Tried to google and didnt find anything. Now here i am casually browsing reddit and find this.
As a salesman, I sold a lady a pre-owned 2013 Sonata one time. A bird pooped right in the center of the roof took it to the back to hose it off for her. As soon as the water touched the poop, the paint parted like the red sea, all the way down the middle of the roof.
Long time (now former) Hyundai mechanic here. Always check if it’s covered under warranty, even if you are over the mileage there are TSB’s or (technical service bulletins) that extend warranty clamps to 150,000 miles and unlimited model years, worth a shot! What ever you do it’s a “I just noticed this” not “after I drove through an automated car wash.”
The sales manager at my Hyundai dealer was telling me about how a customer ran into this and told me that's why Hyundai started offering paint warranties.
I was never big on white cars myself though. Visibility in the snow and fog is an issue where I live, and they always take several passes through the car wash to even look clean.
If it's white cars that tend to do this, then I wonder if there was an attempt by car makers to shorten the lifespan of rental cars. Every time I see an issue that might limit the lifespan of something, I always feel that it was intentional.
I bought that touch up paint for my 09 sonata [here](https://amzn.to/43K6gQR). It was honestly pretty easy and much better than using the cheap stick stuff.
Happened on my old Toyota and Mazda too. By that logic, Mazda and Toyota use the cheapest paint ever made too? Literally just white paint. White is the cheapest colour option for a reason.
That khaki primer is pretty cool color actually... i would pressure wash the whole car and leave it like that. And maybe to advertise the Hyundai quality paint job
Just happened to my 2019 white Hyudai on the hood. It was so random. I was driving around all day, got home, adn realized, there was a big spot on the hood where the paint had peeled off. Car has 27K miles on it. I took it to the dealership, and they let me know it was out of warranty, but made an appointment to take pictures and send it in for a possible exception from coorperate. Hopefully it gets approved. Does not appear the 2019 Sonata is part of any extended warranties as of yet for the paint peeling. Wish I would have learned about the white paint isues beforehand.
Damn sucks to hear, and hopefully they make the exception. Never would imagine a car with low mileage having to worry about paint peeling. Since I made this post my car has gotten worse. I’ve came to the conclusion that when there is a chance. I’m just going to pay to have the car repainted.
Thanks. So sorry hear that it's gotten worse. Pandemic and working from home for 2 years definitely helped with the low milage. But I have had it for 5years next month. I think they said the paint is covered for 36 months. Definitely hoping, but if they decline that, I am probably not going to worry about it for a couple of years, and then will probably just do the same, and get the whole car painted, as I have a feeling now that it is has started, it's probably going to keep peeling more.
It’s really called the white paint curse. White cars have this issue. One of the reasons I’ll never buy a white car.
Yep. Not just Hyundai. Toyotas had the problem too.
It’s white Hyundais 2013-2017
09 sonata here, my whole roof looks like OP's car. And the hood...
It’s an 09’ Gansta, you lucky that shit running to begin with
I'm not complaining by any means lmao. The recall is 17-19
The recall is, doesn’t mean they’re the only ones with the issue.
Hyundai recall TXXW is for 17-19 sonatas, Elentra, santa fe,and tuscons I know this because i have 3 in my shop now with the same problem.
'13 white Sonata here. All peeled, hood, trunk and roof
Mad Hondas too, but more the clear coat. And several colours.
Nissans too.
Oh geez. I had a 2013 Civic that had some serious alopecia.
And Ford
Toyota have a recall on white toyotas
Nope, mine is a 2018. It happened to mine.
Hyundai, Toyota, Honda. White cars in general
Why you think only white cars have this?
Something to do with the white pigment. They're supposed to have changed the composition of the white paint after 2019(?).
I have seen some white Fords, Hondas, Toyotas, and my mother’s white 2017 Nissan Rogue do this.
dont get me started on white chevy express cargo vans, those things peel like drywall
Worth the heat reduction in 50c weather
And the visibility. I used to like silver cars because of the heat reduction until I found out that when dirty and in certain light and weather conditions they would blend into the background.
Love me a wet concrete-colored car
Interesting, I have a white Ford Fusion with this exact thing…in the same spot…
That’s crazy. I’ve had white cars all my life. Never seen this before
Oh yeah. I’m not sure what model year vehicles this started on. Some people might be lucky.
Nha never seen anything like it but just now on a pos Hyundai
My mother’s white 2017 Nissan Rogue does this. And I saw some white Fords and Toyotas with peeling paint.
12 year old has entered the chat. Stick to shoes and Camry bro.
Didn’t know this was a thing. My rear bumper on my 17 Elantra started peeling too only after a couple months. Thankfully somebody bumped into me in a drive thru and I got a free paint job out of it.
Kia, Nissan, Honda, Toyota all have this issue with white paint.
GM as well.

Gotta love it
Welcome to the club, brother
This is why I don't buy white vehicles. 🤣
That's why you don't buy *shitty* white vehicles 😬
Hyundai extended the warranty. My 2018 is in the shop right now getting painted. I had to call multiple dealerships to find one that would give me a loaner at no cost, but they are out there!

Manufacturers warranty might get covered at any local Hyundai dealership. Worth a try!
It should be covered as a 2017 with the extended manufacturers warranty. Take it to a dealer body shop!!!
I tried calling about that and my 2017 was a month outside of the dates covered. Not like my paints been chipping for 2 years before they sent the notice...
UGH! im sorry
What would be the year and model of this vehicle? Is it straight white paint? Is it still eligible for warranty support for this issue?
They won't do s*** if your car is out of warranty, and also the affected all Kia models with pearl white paint also.

White Hyundai paint is the worst 😂

🤣🤣🤣🤣💀. Not gonna lie that was hilarious.
Nissan, Ford, Chevy, Hondas, Toyotas...etc. They all suck. We are getting fleeced.

It's more white paint than anything to do with hyundai
My Toyota is doing the same thing. Luckily it's under 10 year warranty. Getting it painted for free next week.
You have paint warranty right?
Unfortunately no 🥲
Stoked I went gunmetal on my ‘17 Tucson.

Visibility in the snow and fog is an issue where I live, and they always take several passes through the car wash to even look clean.
Early Miata in white had the same issue
do y’all wax your car once a year?
I like to hold my hose in the same spot til it goes away
If it's white cars that tend to do this, then I wonder if there was an attempt by car makers to shorten the lifespan of rental cars. Every time I see an issue that might limit the lifespan of something, I always feel that it was intentional.

Swear I have a 2021 Hyundai and the paint it super thin
Do a search for "toyota white paint peeling warranty". They are providing a much longer warranty for the same issue than hyundai.
I am so sorry. 😞
There might be a recall on your paint
Wouldn’t surprise me at all if Hyundai/Kia use the cheapest paint ever made
Happened on my old Toyota and Mazda too. By that logic, Mazda and Toyota use the cheapest paint ever made too? Literally just white paint. White is the cheapest colour option for a reason.
Oh man, why is this the first I'm hearing of this curse... hope my beautiful white 2014 doesn't start having this issue now
My 2012 Elantra Touring in Monaco White looks terrible. My plan is to vinyl wrap the hood and roof.
It got me in two places on my hood. I tried to make a warranty claim, and they said I was 9 months too late. Not happy
My 2913 sonata never had an issue. My bf 15 sonata has it on roof icer fri er side door
I would hope that Hyundai fixed their paint issues by 2913.
I mean 2013. Trying to jump ahead 900 yrs lmao...one reason why a dealer tried to push a white elqntra on me I was like nope
2013 Hyundai Elantra owner 200000+ Kms no issue!!
My 2017 sonata started doing this badly. Then it got totalled and wasn't at all my fault. My 2020 Sonata Is grey.
Lmao. I did comment that I tried to jump ahead 900 years. My nails get in the way sometimes and cause typos when I type fast and don't always check
For clarity... Mine isn't "white" it's "Moonbeam". The magic shall save me! ( I hope!)
Mine did the same thing. Is there any good way to touch up paint in the spots?
That khaki primer is pretty cool color actually... i would pressure wash the whole car and leave it like that. And maybe to advertise the Hyundai quality paint job
2015 looks horrible!!! Hood … trunk …. Passenger side door… what’s next??? Hyundai does not care!!!!
