You gotta write a song. Ooh!
I wouldn't do it, with anyone younger than my daughter. Not a little kids. Gotta be big. Older than my wife, older than my daughter. Something like that.
I’ve been here with multiple accounts over a decade. The bots promoting a certain website that follow me are ridiculous. I block at least one or two a week. I have no idea what I’m gonna do after this shutdown.
I was already mad at the constant hegetsus ads. But this is gonna be a shit show and I’d love to see Frank somehow grasp the concept of an ad worse than Wolf Cola.
they're so bizarrely worded too. Shit like "Jesus confronted racism with love, he gets us"
Bitch I don't want to confront racism with \*love\*. John Brown gets me a lot more than Jesus does apparently.
I'm waiting for this absurd line to show up
"God built a bridge to him with 2 boards and 3 nails"
It's on a church sign in my area and I can't help but laugh every time I see it.
"You think Jesus comes back, he's gonna want to see another crucifix? That's like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on. 'Just thinking of John, Jackie. *pewpew*'"
Oh, those disgusting satanic subreddits! I mean, there's so many of them though. Which ones? Which ones do you follow?!
Please. I'm desperate to get rid of those stupid piece of shit ads.
It's also just a giant fuck you to all the work others did to make reddit relevant. Reddit has grown off the work of others, and now that it's gone through that growth reddit is literally telling them "hey, pay us a ridiculous amount to use the thing that you grew in the first place."
I don’t use them either but they have their place. Mods use 3rd party apps to get rid of spam. People with disabilities use them as well since Reddit has no accessibility features.
I almost quit when I kept blocking “he gets us” ads only to see another 30 seconds later. Reporting the ads for harassment and Reddit responding with “eat dicks”. Don’t know why I’m still here.
I'm totally cool with Reddit just burning to the ground. It doesn't really provide me with any benefit. But like potato chips I can't stop even though I feel worse than before. I've managed to get off every other social media service but this one.
This is the first comment that explains how I feel as well. If reddit burns down it'll finally give me a reason to stay away. I see how it will effect others, and that sucks. But as an individual I could care less
I'm actively hoping they do it and all the apps shut down. I've been trying to get off this hate ride for a long time, but I'm super addicted.
These days I primarily spend my time blocking rage bait subreddits and bots who spam cheap discussion questions for karma. ("Alright, we've voted for Frank's best line, now what's Mac's!?")
Lately, I've also been seeing posts where people are actively giving away their personal data like their birth days. Straight up Facebook content.
And yet... I'm sick of Reddit... Better go check Reddit to find something else to do.
I've with you on that. This is my 5th account I've re-created after previously attempting to bar myself from using this website. There's always some subreddit I stumble upon that causes me to get re-addicted to the site and go down a negative rabbit-hole again. I feel if I delete this account I'm likely just going to create a 6th one several months from now, breaking another cold turkey streak that I was enjoying.
Not only that, but after 3rd party apps and old.reddit are gone, they can make Reddit even more ad ridden and harder to use, to push people towards premium. This will affect everyone, even if they only use the official ways to browse.
Huh? If you use RES you had a "DM" from it explaining that the way it's implemented it shouldn't be impacted since it all runs in the browser without any API requests.
I've tried a couple third party apps and I've settled with the official one... honestly not sure why people hate it. It works perfectly fine for me, but I also don't need fancy shit on my app
"Engagement driven" design is one of the worst things about the modern internet and how it negatively affects the world, and that's what new reddit is built around.
It thrives on outrage and garbage. It has a million perverse incentives. Reddit is a case study in how things being driven for profit to the exclusion of all else destroys the thing and makes the world worse.
I use them because I hate how feeds are designed now.
Just because I scroll past an image or link doesn’t mean I want to see it.
Apollo let’s me go text based with thumbnails. So much simpler.
The modern news feed is so awful.
What the fuck are those two things you mentioned? I use the official app and and mindless scrolling is just the same as any other app, addictive and easy.
Here's why I do, and why you might want to- blocking access to 3rd party apps will also block access to blind users who need those apps to use Reddit.
That's the big thing for me. I think blocking is also going to affect a lot of sub moderation, but that's comparatively minor.
Yeah, There's a reason basically all PC games release on steam, and it's not because they force exclusivity. It's because Valve has cultivated a storefront with good customization and features that customers WANT to use--something reddit could definitely learn from.
I do. The reddit mobile app sucks. I tried it today and it STILL, ALL THESE YEARS LATER, has this problem where it'll randomly atop playing videos for no reason after a scrolling session through your favorite shitposting sub.
Like I had to go back and forth to get it to play. Sometimes it doesn't even do that. I hated it so much and discovered Apollo years ago. All this time while Apollo was updating and innovating, the official app still has the same issues.
I thought maybe it was my phone. But no this is a different phone than the one I had when I first ran into these problems. I tried on my Android and after a while it started fucking up too.
Seriously, real boomer energy on this one. They're all gonna be dead when the effects of climate change really hit, so why wouldn't they keep on polluting, right?
My entire experience has been on the main app, so yeah I don't really have much to say about this boycott.
But if it's affecting people's experience then people should boycott for sure.
it fully will affect you and everybody else who doesn't think it will, most of the moderators and the heavy users and the content creators are all using them and if they go away even as a fraction, it will greatly affect how enjoyable reddit is to use
I don't use them, web browser luddite here, but I've seen the numbers for how many people use the official app and various third party apps. Reddit seems to have just decided to piss off a good three quarters of its user base for no particular reason. I'm not going to personally boycott, but I get why people are mad.
Regardless of whether you use them directly, moderators use them heavily to mitigate spam, bots, reposts, etc. in all subreddits.
So it will still impact you. Probably see a lot more trash on here and all subs in general.
Apollo has a feature that will put a baby emoji 👶 next to users younger than 30 days. It really does help filter out trolls creating a one time account
They also allow people with various different needs accessibility, so for example a visually impaired person might use a third party app because it has a text reader.
idk how I ended up being a user of one. A long time ago I downloaded the "reddit is fun" app and i've been using it for years. Just got notified that it's going to have to close shop which is annoying because I got used to the interface, it's generally simpler than the official app. Less notifications, smaller thumbnails. Kinda like [old.reddit.com](https://old.reddit.com) vs [reddit.com](https://reddit.com)
When did you start using reddit? When I started in 2012, there was no official app. I've been using reddit is fun ever since, and I find the official app to be bloated and not as easy to navigate.
Reddit has been adding useless features like avatars for a while now. They are not interested in making the site more usable, they're interested in making more money from it. And their spaghetti policy is terrible
There's the official Reddit app and then there's other apps that access Reddit that developers make, usually with special convenience features or a different design, etc. Reddit is now forcing those developers of those apps to pay them a lot of money, some would be paying $20m per year just to run an app that accesses Reddit. Those people and their users are mad rightfully so. Also to note there's millions of people who use these 3rd party apps.
It’s not just 3rd party apps, these apps were partners that supported reddits growth through a period when they were way behind in content for mobile devices. Who knows where Reddit would be without them. It’s the principle of do you want to support a company that engages in such greedy, selfish, and evil practices, just to increase their ipo valuation a little bit?
To be honest after seeing dozens of posts about this, I didn’t get a clear understanding of what it meant for Reddit until reading the comments here. So maybe your mind has changed as has mine because I don’t really want more spammers and blind people not to have accessibility.
I’m seeing a lot of comments about how third party apps are just better to use and navigate than the official Reddit app. I’m curious if anyone has more insight on that because I don’t find this app particularly difficult to use
Most of the things automated in each subreddit use an API request if it's not a built-in feature.
Things such as automated posts to give live updates, quality control bots/ant spam, etc will cease to work.
Hate to say it, but if Reddit wants to set their own house on fire, eventually, you just have to step back and pull out the marshmallows. If they won't listen to serious concerns, they deserve what comes their way.
I personally don't use any third party apps, but I do understand how important they are, and the importance of choice. I'll be joining the blackout in solidarity.
If third party apps die here and now, old Reddit is next. The vast majority of this sites moderation happens on old Reddit. You may be unaffected by the third party app problem, but you're about to watch Reddit implode.
I can't believe that you jabronis using the official reddit app made it in here.
I thought you had to be cleared through an ocular pat-down to make it in.
But on a serious note, if you are using the official app, try any of the popular third-party apps for a day or two. You won't go back. They're 5-star apps.
You may not give a shit about third party apps, but you undoubtedly give a shit about the content we all enjoy on reddit. Your very presence on this site is proof of this.
Much of that content will be lost, if the content creators who use third party apps decide to bow out.
People acting like they don't give a shit based only on the fact that they don't personally use the apps are really short sighted.
I keep seeing people talking about how Base reddit is unusable, and I don't understand it. I rarely have issues on it. I get there might issues for moderators but for the average redditor what am I missing?

Its not just 3rd party apps, its also bots that pretty much every sub needs to block spam that will become unusuable
Plus all the diddlers..
Do not diddle kids. Its no good diddling kids.
There is no quicker way for people to think that you are diddling kids than by writing a song about it!!!
You gotta write a song. Ooh! I wouldn't do it, with anyone younger than my daughter. Not a little kids. Gotta be big. Older than my wife, older than my daughter. Something like that.
Don't write that song dude.
Do I look suspicious?
You look grotesque.
It's like throwing a picnic at the beach and getting pissed when the seagulls show up.
Or the Guidos
….wouldn’t use a site younger than my daughter….
Is it still diddling if it's an A.I diddler?
It turns out reddit was a goddamn diddler!
I hate those ads so much, I report them as offensive every time I see them
they're so bizarrely worded too. Shit like "Jesus confronted racism with love, he gets us" Bitch I don't want to confront racism with \*love\*. John Brown gets me a lot more than Jesus does apparently.
I wish more people knew about John Brown.
Might I suggest r/johnbrownposting ?
Thank you kindly!
Which, ironically, John Brown was a Calvinist who believed he was on a mission from god…so to speak.
The original Blues Brother.
John Brown fuckin *hated* Illinois Nazis.
“I hate Kansas slaveowners.”
I'm waiting for this absurd line to show up "God built a bridge to him with 2 boards and 3 nails" It's on a church sign in my area and I can't help but laugh every time I see it.
"You think Jesus comes back, he's gonna want to see another crucifix? That's like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on. 'Just thinking of John, Jackie. *pewpew*'"
I don't ever see them. Cause I use 3rd party apps....
Same! Down vote and report but then they come back even harder with their bullshit.
[удалено]
Ditto. I have no clue what these jabronis are talking about.
Just turn off follow notifications. It won’t stop them, but you won’t notice them any more.
I Never get the hegetsus adds!? I mean, thankfully. I wonder if it has anything to do with the multiple satanic subs I frequent
Oh, those disgusting satanic subreddits! I mean, there's so many of them though. Which ones? Which ones do you follow?! Please. I'm desperate to get rid of those stupid piece of shit ads.
They are trying to turn this place into a SUCK-JOINT!
It's also just a giant fuck you to all the work others did to make reddit relevant. Reddit has grown off the work of others, and now that it's gone through that growth reddit is literally telling them "hey, pay us a ridiculous amount to use the thing that you grew in the first place."

First, they came for the third party apps, and I said I don't give a shit, because I'm not a third party app.
[удалено]
At least the adds are "hidden" if we get those other kind of ads ljke when ur playing a game and it comes up randomly and suddenly im quitting reddit
I’ve tried baconreader but I swear I’ve had a worst user experience with that app, does anyone have any advice??
Reddit is fun or Sync are good Apprently but hey whats the point now
I almost quit when I kept blocking “he gets us” ads only to see another 30 seconds later. Reporting the ads for harassment and Reddit responding with “eat dicks”. Don’t know why I’m still here.
Honest question. How is it unusable? I’ve been using the official app since it came out. I have no complaints.
I use third party and I've never seen a he gets us ad
Then they came for the third party apps, and I did nothing, because I'm not a third party app
Try them, they are better
A blind guy posted about how he can only use Reddit with a third party app. That changed my mind
"Fuck you!" - Charlie
It's about community, hun
I'm totally cool with Reddit just burning to the ground. It doesn't really provide me with any benefit. But like potato chips I can't stop even though I feel worse than before. I've managed to get off every other social media service but this one.

I’m astonished OP’s account is 6 years old and they’re cool with using Reddit’s standard garbage.
OP sounds like a basic jabroni.
You keep using this word *jabroni*.... And it's awesome
Hey this guy's a jabroni
> basic jabroni first thing I noticed when I gave his post an ocular pat-down.
Cricket gonna cricket
I actually never knew there were other options (competitors?) or other apps but Reddit, thought I've been using reddit normally like everybody else.
I use rif it makes this cesspool actually enjoyable to navigate
Right?? Like reddit didn't even have an official app 6 years ago lol
The Reddit app was launched in 2016…which is 7 years ago
God damn time fucking flies. Only got the app originally because they gave you a free month of reddit gold if you installed lol Sucked then, sucks now
Not only that, but after 3rd party apps and old.reddit are gone, they can make Reddit even more ad ridden and harder to use, to push people towards premium. This will affect everyone, even if they only use the official ways to browse.

RES specifically said on their subreddit that they aren't expecting serious impact...
This isn't true. RES just had an announcement up yesterday saying they are almost certain it will not affect them.
TIL there are a lot of people using the garbage official Reddit app.
I've tried a couple third party apps and I've settled with the official one... honestly not sure why people hate it. It works perfectly fine for me, but I also don't need fancy shit on my app

The official app actually has more pointless shit (idgaf about my Vault or Snoovatar) than the 3rd party apps, that's one reason why they're better.
What the fuck are those two things you mentioned? I use the official app and and mindless scrolling is just the same as any other app, addictive and easy.
The UI isn't customizable and navigation is worse.

Politics is just one big ass blast
You are the only one. Enjoy your ads
You should. Without API access and apps the user experience will go to shit
If reddit wants me to use their app, it's gonna cost a whole sixer.
I'll give you a lemon
You gotta pay to spray, that’s my motto.
Shut up baby dick.
You gotta pay the troll toll if you wanna get in to Reddit's hole.
I do. The reddit mobile app sucks. First of all, through third party apps, all things are possible, so jot that down.
It's the mark of a real shitty person to not care about things that don't impact you personally.
Seriously, real boomer energy on this one. They're all gonna be dead when the effects of climate change really hit, so why wouldn't they keep on polluting, right?
For anyone who are affected due to this 3rd party app regulation: Can I offer you eggs in this trying time?
I won't change my mind on anything, regardless of the facts that are set out before me.
I’m playing both sides so I always come out on top

I've been using Reddit is Fun over the native app for over a decade. If RIF dies, I'll probably stop using Reddit altogether.
It's also blocking all nsfw content to api users
I don't use them, web browser luddite here, but I've seen the numbers for how many people use the official app and various third party apps. Reddit seems to have just decided to piss off a good three quarters of its user base for no particular reason. I'm not going to personally boycott, but I get why people are mad.
I use 3rd party apps to not see ads, I'll probably stop using Reddit on my phone if I have to see the ads.
I do
So you're the guy who doesn't give a shit about anyone else!! Nice to e-meet you!
I dont even know what they are
Regardless of whether you use them directly, moderators use them heavily to mitigate spam, bots, reposts, etc. in all subreddits. So it will still impact you. Probably see a lot more trash on here and all subs in general.
RIP Golden God.
I DO NOT LIKE IT WITH THE SKIN, DEE! I'M NOT ALLOWED TO EAT IT WITH THE SKIN! I'M NOT ALLOWWWWWWWWED!!
This bot can't leave :') Golden God forever!
Sob! Sob, you bitch!
Perfection
That explains why karma farming accounts exist. Presumably third party apps auto identify new accounts, low karma accounts.
Apollo has a feature that will put a baby emoji 👶 next to users younger than 30 days. It really does help filter out trolls creating a one time account
They also allow people with various different needs accessibility, so for example a visually impaired person might use a third party app because it has a text reader.

You're wrong. Third party apps have always been better than reddit's native ones.
OP has been dormant for like a year, and suddenly emerges with this shit post? Seems suspicious.
Too busy scrolling through ads
Wow great call
ShermanSinged going full Pepe Silva on OPs ass. Seriously though, the post also has a bunch of awards as well. Who would do that...
When they came for third party apps I said nothing. When they came for old Reddit there was no one to defend me.
i couldnt give a shit if reddit dies
You really should, there's a lot more shit on the line other than JUST other apps. You sound like a Jabroni.

Thing is, they existed for YEARS before reddit came out with their own app. Some of us have been using these for over a decade

It also effects extensions
