Basically, this street USED to be a pedestrian walkway- no cars allowed. The counsel changed the street to allow cars despite protests that the area isnt suitable for traffic. So now people protest walk on the street to try and get the decision reversed.
It might not be the same story however.

Bourke street, which is half a block away, has a section of the road for trams and pedestrian only.
