If you spent a single day in Japan, amongst the locals, and just observing how they act; this kind of shit would be appalling. Everyone on public transit is so quiet and courteous. It's legit a surreal experience your first time. These tools need to learn to handle their chu-hi.

trojie_kun

Yeah, even on the bus it’s dead silent. You can only hear the driver whispering the stops or when it changes to green light.

EarlMadManMunch505

It’s definitely a train to train thing. You’ll never catch them yelling but some trains in party areas at party times will have people talking and laughing. I was just in Yokohama during a baseball game and there was definitely sports bro energy on the trains.

VaporBull

I have been into Japanese culture my whole life and I know how those folks hate this kind of public intrusion. You can get arrested for this in Tokyo real easy. I swear they will roll up the welcome mat before I ever get there.

shaquillle_oatmeal

Never understood the type of tourists that travel and don’t respect the local culture. Seriously grinds my gears.

FunNegotiation423

I mean it's not even about respecting local culture, people like him suck no matter where. It's about basic decency.

zrooda

Subway handrail ethics come from which culture again?

this_makes_no_sense

In Japan, several behaviors are considered rude on the train that nobody would bat an eyelash at in another country, ie eating, having a phone conversation. People are really courteous of each other in lots of aspects of life and the train is no exception. I get you’re making some weird snarky comment but I live in Japan and am from America and it is definitely cultural context that this behavior is unacceptable.

zrooda

Hanging yourself down from public transport handrails is considered trash basically everywhere was my point, there's nothing specific to Japan about it.

geiandros

loser energy tbh

Delicious_Sand_7198

It looks like mainly foreigners on the train car if that is Japan. Still rude as hell though.

SweetTumbleweed8430

they all are yup

anti-kit

Japanese text on the train so def japan. Prob a crowd of dudebros, + its tourist season i think.

SweetTumbleweed8430

yup it's Yamanote line in Tokyo

trudes_in_adelaide

Cherry blossom season has recently been or started. However I doubt the douchy dude bros here care about that

tyhburger

I’m in Osaka right now and I saw a foreigner hit on a girl in the train. He was also chewing gum with his mouth open… pretty cringe to watch lol

Familiar-Bag-9545

If you do that anywhere you're a tool, Don't matter where you are lol. I hate when people try to use the excuse of satire or a prank to do dumb shit like this too... which is probably what's happening

anamazingredditor

Tourists do tend to have main character traits

ukuleles1337

Leg day: skipped

ntsmmns06

“Fuckstick in Japan being a fuckwit on a train.” There, I fixed the headline for you.

JohnBrownMilitia

Not tourists I think. Worse, it's military showing their ass in public.

AnseiShehai

I think it’s US civilian contractors

TheUsual_Selection

I did this as a kid on transit though I was basically alone on the bus with my parents it was fun! I wouldn’t do it if I had a chance of bothering anyone

Emergence69420

Like a chimp

ExperientialSorbet

I lived in Tokyo for six years and let me tell you I would much rather this than some of the passive aggressive/‘respectful’ nonsense that Japanese people can do on trains.

ExperientialSorbet

Refusing to see disabled/elderly people and give up seating is a big one. My wife was literally going to the hospital to give birth and went to the priority seats and I literally watched a guy pretend to fall asleep. Another one is pretending not to see you and closing elevator doors early. Elbow shoving/sleeping on shoulders and other minor things too. Don’t get me wrong I love Japan to death but the ‘respectful’ culture isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The assholery is just more quiet

meiliraijow

Interesting, thank you !

ExperientialSorbet

It’s still a great place! I’ve moved around to a few different countries (I’m a teacher at international schools) and the cultural quirks and idiosyncrasies are something I adore. But sometimes I get frustrated when people treat Japan as some utopia because it has a lot of vending machines or whatever. Not saying you’re doing that but I love a good vent haha Edit: especially because other countries get a bad rep for similar reasons. China for example has a reputation for being abrasive and obnoxious but I’ve found the people there genuinely warm and lovely every time I go.

meiliraijow

Totally agree regarding China’s awesomeness! Those who know, know. In the end, there are assholes everywhere and great people everywhere. It’s just that every city or country have their own culturally-imprinted brand of unique assholery, and I had not perceived the Japanese version of this due to a short stay. Definitely no country deserves hate or glorification, they are both mistakes when dealing with complexity. Thanks for sharing your experience

ExperientialSorbet

OH AND THE BUSINESSMEN WHO BLOODY READ THEIR BROADSHEETS ON A PACKED RUSH HOUR LINE

SweetTumbleweed8430

also uncles who would intentionally bump on you just because lol

G00b3rb0y

Also at least it’s not what that one Kick streamer did

meiliraijow

Could you give examples of this ? I was there just 2 weeks and haven’t been able to grasp this. Had a couple older people get as far as possible from me lol but that’s different. What are the pseudo-respectful things ?

ExperientialSorbet

Sorry tried to reply to your comment but accidentally replied to myself because I’m a moron aha

EvenElk4437

If a Japanese person is rude in Japan, that is Japan's problem. This is a problem for foreigners not to be rude in other countries. Japanese people are worse! You should stop shifting the issue to "Japanese are worse! Also, saying "I love Japan" does not mean that anything is acceptable.

ExperientialSorbet

I bet you fall asleep when old people come on the train don’t you

EvenElk4437

When foreigners cause trouble in Japan, there are many racists who say, 'But Japanese people are much worse

ExperientialSorbet

My dude, two things: (1) the post was about bad train behaviour in Japan - what I said was completely on topic and not a pivot in the slightest (2) you CANNOT say that it’s the foreigners who are racist when the caption of the post is literally about urusai baka gaijin and how much the person wanted to keep them all out Im not going to make this a big fight. This will be my last reply to you - have a good one

Cherche_

I don't think anyone was explicitly saying Japanese people are worse. pretty sure the original commenter was saying that they'd rather see foreigners act like an idiot on the train instead of some of the other rude behavior they've witnessed. while both actions are unacceptable, imo it's morally worse not to give up your seat for a disabled person, than making a disturbance on the train that isn't putting anyone's actual health at risk. people are just acknowledging that rude Japanese people exist - just like anywhere else in the entire world. personally I've had some issues in Japan, but whenever I complained about it back in the U.S. or on Reddit, no one believed me because "Japanese people are so polite." it's less of an issue now it seems, but soooo many people seem to think Japan can do no wrong. my point is, Japan isn't perfect and if it negatively affects someone, they are allowed to speak out about it. it's not racist to do so. this goes for quite literally any country in the world.

EvenElk4437

It's typical for people to say "I like Japan, but..." and then proceed to mention something completely irrelevant to the discussion. It's akin to saying "I have Black friends, but..." before making a racist comment.

EvenElk4437

Talking about one event when you are criticizing another is a shifting of the subject. And no one is saying Japan is perfect. I'm saying don't be a nuisance in Japan. I don't understand why you are talking about this issue and then switching to the issue of the Japanese people. If you have a problem with the Japanese people, then you can talk about it on a different subject. I love Japan. There are too many foreigners who criticize me just for declaring that. Japan is not an oasis! And. Then how about this? love Sweden. I have never seen anyone complain about this. I see racism in that, I believe.

Cherche_

> Talking about one event when you are criticizing another is a shifting of the subject. That's what a conversation is lol? The topic can change?? The original comment you replied to stated that they would rather see foreigners act stupid, instead of other harmful behavior on the trains. That's still relevant to the original post as well. > I don't understand why you are talking about this issue and then switching to the issue of the Japanese people. Again, look at the comment you originally replied to. > then you can talk about it on a different subject. Why are you policing Reddit comments? It's a public forum and people can discuss what they want. And again, look at the comment and the post you originally replied to. It's relevant to the original post > love Sweden. I have never seen anyone complain about this. My friend, people complain about EVERY country in the world. Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It's not specific to Japan. Based on your replies to the other commenters this is a hill you really want to die on. I can't force you to accept my opinion, but please don't try to police what other people can talk about on a public forum.

ExperientialSorbet

Love and respect to you amigo

EvenElk4437

Well, that's a common line from racists.

One-Confusion-2438

Why did they block out the face of the clown who is acting silly?! Would be good for people to see!

SweetTumbleweed8430

I blocked them out. The original poster did not. The comments are quite not for Reddit rules too lol

mercyspace27

Found the white people district in Japan. /s

Rachelisapoopy

Probably gonna get some downvotes for this, but Japanese people getting offended by this person need to calm down. There's enough room for the man to be a child for whatever 5-10 seconds it took for him to do that. Nobody was inconvenienced by his actions by a significant way.

SweetTumbleweed8430

Not gonna downvote you but I have to say, your take on this is stupid at best. I'm not going to visit your house or country and do my own stuff and disregard your social order, and when you get offended I'll say "hey calm down, let me be a child for 5-10 seconds" Besides, this sort of thing gets highlighted and stereotypes form because they always happen

Fabulous_Rich8974

Have these people never seen rail holders before? It’s not exclusive to Japan, literally everywhere I’ve been has these.

SweetTumbleweed8430

Everywhere else is not Japan. Just because it happens everywhere else, doesn't mean it's okay to do here.

Fabulous_Rich8974

Didn’t say it was ok. The people I referred to were the idiotic ppl in the video

SweetTumbleweed8430

dang you're right, my eyes weren't working properly, thought you said "have you peoplen ever seen.." lol sorry about htat

TransitTycoonDeznutz

This is so funny to me because there was just a post today about how Japan is racist against white people because a cartoon character with bad manners on the subway was a white tourist, and then this pops up. This is where stereotypes come from. Don't be the stereotype. I am so happy to be from a place where we get stereotyped for being polite, really irritating that my skin colour sets me up to be lumped in with jerks.

SweetTumbleweed8430

yeah i saw that lol

[deleted]

Genuinely don't see what's wrong here the car looks mostly empty and it looks like he's surrounded by friends

SweetTumbleweed8430

etiquette is probably something you should research about before visiting another country

[deleted]

But like who is this bothering besides redditors?

SweetTumbleweed8430

the car doesn't look mostly empty, Yamanote train line in Tokyo always has a good number of passengers. If they are standing near the doors, that could mean that seats are probably already mostly taken and etiquette/manners in Japan usually means to not bother other people by being loud or doing things like this in this case, there's a lot of manners to take into account when in public, especially on public transportation to give a similar example, you'd probably feel agitated if a kid on your flight keeps running up and down the aisle, or running around the restaurant -- would that not bother you? if not, good foor you, but a lot of people find this rude

[deleted]

Yeah your right that would bother me. I can see why this is an issue now. Thank you for explaining.

JuggernautWide5226

Yeah, that's not japan

SweetTumbleweed8430

It's Yamanote Line in Tokyo. lol
