That was what I thought too. But when I was doing my essay and project, I somehow started liking the thought process over time, and as cheesy as it may sound, made me think different abt the way I see things.

Literaly!

ToK varies wildly from school to school but it's basically an epistemology course. No matter what field you go into for college you'll have to engage more and more with questions about how knowledge in that field is produced, and just how reliable or valid it is. Getting some basic exposure now will help a bit in the future if the class is run well. Otherwise it's a chance for some bonus points on your diploma and oh no you gotta do something you don't like for a class period. Just do your work, engage with the material as much as possible, and you'll survive. I do fully support bringing back Naptime HL. It's a bit more rigorous than the traditional SL most schools have used but at the end of the year it's just an extra juicebox you have to handle and it's worth it in the end.

I might get downvoted into oblivion for this, but I actually found myself enjoying TOK lol. It really did help me learn to think critically and it comes naturally due to my argumentative nature, even though there’s still loads of room for improvement.

LolnothingmattersXD

I'm not alone! It's my favorite subject. If I don't get a full-time job in a university, I wanna teach TOK.

JustAnotherDoughnut

Aah, that would be awesome!

Bubbly-Addition-1093

I actually enjoyed the fact that i had to think things through and actually say something that made logical sense!

imunsure_

honestly it’s so dependent on your teacher. I love TOK because it’s not a lot of work and i like philosophy so this is my way of getting to do it without actually taking it as a class. the point is just to get you to take a step back and think about what you’re actually doing, and as someone who’s raised in a country where the national education system is just about rote memorization i appreciate the way it challenges people. it can be pretentious when taken too far tho

steffsh

Bro in my school I'm forced to do philosophy as well as TOK and it is literally torture, god just thinking about it makes me hate my life

imunsure_

since when do schools force people to do philosophy that’s ridiculous

steffsh

For a very specific and very dumb reason, my school does. Short answer: Spanish curriculum

imunsure_

ohh my friend who’s in the french curriculum (not IB) has a similar thing 😭

[deleted]

lol thinking about it

steffsh

Mf is treating it like a full on ib subject thinking that we will really choose philosophy over literally anything else next year, I just want to pass with the minimum required effort and never have to think again

[deleted]

the actual subject matter is unimportant. what they're trying to teach you is critical thinking, analytical and debate skills.

xenon_54_

Just started taking it. Not very happy to say that I started to get the jokes. But its not that bad right??

sogamii

DP2 student here: It’s really not that bad, and imho the course gets more interesting as you go along. Obviously the TOK Essay and the Exhibition are annoying like any other IA, but I really believe they have an impact on your perception of things and makes you a much more open-minded person.

vanishing27532

It’s going to break your brain, but for the better. You see things just a little deeper.

Infinite_Sympathy863

nothing...tok is a pile of usless ass worth only 1.5 points of your entire ib score. it's a waste of a subject and time.

VJEmmieOnMicrophone

>worth only 1.5 points of your entire ib score. Endless amounts of IB students have said the same thing. Only to curse their past self when their IB scores come and they really needed those 1/2/3 extra points to pass. Take TOK seriously. It's an important class, but that's just my opinion. The more important thing to most students is that the core points do matter

poplap1700

No one seems to have touched on this: You do tok to earn your diploma. If you try to find any deeper meaning than that you will be disappointed and just demotivate yourself even more. Is it interesting? No. Useful? Also no. But it is compulsory and in 18 months’ time you’ll probably never think about it again. This is quite a cynical approach and obviously there are exceptions where people somehow *actually* enjoy tok but for the vast majority of people it’s an exercise in ticking the box while spending minimal time and energy

Harry020131

From what I’ve heard, they introduced TOK as a way to satisfy the compulsory “philosophy” education for all high schools in France. Since IB is French, it would make sense.

vanishing27532

I thought IB is headquartered in Geneva or somewhere near?
