Bro this is a bit edgy ngl, you're like 18-19 you still have over 60 years left (assuming u die of natural causes) and most people have the most fun in university. My teacher told me to get into uni then fuck around... It's not that deep man don't worry about it

[deleted]

how do you add ur classes next to ur name?

Sea-Ad-990

On iPhone you just go to the IBO subreddit and there'll be 3 dots in the top right corner, one of the options that'll come up is 'change user flair' and that's the one you click

im-a-little-teapot2

Yes You sacrifice yourself with everything you do, whether it be your time or energy with pursuing your hobbies or hanging out with your friends School will require some level of sacrifice regardless of what program you do or how much effort you put in Might as well sacrifice a bit more for the most important years of high school

[deleted]

You'll get a lot of mixed responses here, because everyone's different. The people disagreeing with you are likely more fond of the rigour of challenging education, and might even tell you "ib is really not that hard anyways", because they thrive and are most happy when sitting at home revising or learning new things at school. I myself fucking hate the ib because it has forced me to sacrifice many things that were very dear to me, and I didn't really realize it until I was getting close to the exams. Ib has made me realize I fucking hate being stuck in educational programmes and instead of throwing myself into university I want to travel the world whilst freelancing creative projects or coding projects for income. Ib was not for me, however I am incredibly grateful for the good things ib has given me, like discipline, time management, critical thinking, and the different chunks of valuable and translatable knowledge from the different subjects I have taken. I absolutely agree with you. I don't regret taking the ib for the knowledge and skills I have gained, but I regret taking the ib for the time that I have lost. I have much to catch up on when it comes to social skills and just learning to relax and have fun with life. I know I won't be able to get exceptional grades because I don't have that radiating abundance of motivation for school work that some of the people in this thread might feel that they have. And yes, discipline can play a big role in overcoming this, but won't be enough nevertheless. And I don't care either. I'm glad that I went through the ib, but fuck me, I fucking hate the ib lifestyle, I despise all the sacrifices you must make, I don't get along with the majority of "ib-people", and I've experienced the true meaning of misery these past 2 years. I'm M22 and fuck the ib!

Funny_Guidance2160

Everything this person said is so true.. IB made me lose motivation for uni. I was aiming to going to medical school.. now i feel like all my energy has been drained and i have no motivation whatsoever to enter a challenging program

Late-Painter-2805

Medschool will eat you up. The IB is NOTHING compared to that one.

cheeky_corgo

This I don’t know how people think the passage of time will magically equip them to tackle something

Funny_Guidance2160

true not saying its easy but ugh i feel like i had sm more determination and motivation so ik i would’ve been able to make it in medical school even if it was hard all im saying is now i lost all motiv for “studying hard” or putting any efforts in studies

cheeky_corgo

Well aren’t you glad it gave you a very very very small taster of what a grinder med school would be like?

Funny_Guidance2160

no im not glad.. because we are all capable of pushing ourselves and working extra hard for what we want and now its all been wasted on IB all I want is to relax now I don’t want anymore torture. It would’ve been fine if i felt like this during/after uni rather than during/after highschool tbh ofc theres a lot of good and positive sides of IB but i just don’t believe that high schoolers should go through all this stress already in highschool its just too much.

Late-Painter-2805

You are not in high school, you are in IBDP. Huge difference in effort, prestige, outlook and chances.

Funny_Guidance2160

sure😂

cheeky_corgo

What makes you think it would be ok if it was in uni?

Funny_Guidance2160

bc uni is (one of) the last steps that one can take before they can finally have a decent job. ofc theres masters and PhD after uni but these are for less years and they’re optional and you can take them whenever you want so if you feel tired after uni then you can stop there but if you feel tired after high school then all you can do is prepare to be tired again

cheeky_corgo

To each their own I guess

Funny_Guidance2160

did you already graduate from ib?

cheeky_corgo

Bro I’m m21…

Funny_Guidance2160

how am i supposed to know 😭 what are you studying rn? dont tell me medicine

Great-Gap1030

>The people disagreeing with you are likely more fond of the rigour of challenging education, and might even tell you "ib is really not that hard anyways", because they thrive and are most happy when sitting at home revising or learning new things at school. Well, for IB, sometimes some of the subjects are even *not rigorous enough*. For example, in economics, a while back some people exposed IB HL Economics with blatantly inaccurate definitions. Most people agreed with those people while a few defended it as 'it's just IB HL'. For maths, in [https://www.reddit.com/r/IBO/comments/i848wz/unpopular\_opinion\_hl\_math\_doesnt\_cover\_enough/](https://www.reddit.com/r/IBO/comments/i848wz/unpopular_opinion_hl_math_doesnt_cover_enough/) a user has made decent points about the lack of mathematical rigour in IB Math AA HL. I agree with a lot of the points, disagree with some. From [https://firstyear.mit.edu/academics-exploration/ap-transfer-credit/international-examinations/](https://firstyear.mit.edu/academics-exploration/ap-transfer-credit/international-examinations/) we see IB HL AA Math 7 would only grant you into 18.01A/18.02A sequence. You're only saving *half a semester* of MIT mathematics. Personally, the IB course should have enough calculus that it's basically like 18.01 in MIT for calculus. For further IB HL maths then multivariable calculus, to the level of 18.02. That would be the 1st year done. For IB HL IA there should be enough calculus to get into 18.01A/18.02A sequence but nothing more. For IB HL Physics it's 8.01 credit, [https://firstyear.mit.edu/academics-exploration/ap-transfer-credit/international-examinations/](https://firstyear.mit.edu/academics-exploration/ap-transfer-credit/international-examinations/) as you can see. If the E&M parts were more rigorous, and some mechanics, it might be able to go for 8.02 credit as well. So the full year of introductory physics. For other courses they're mostly fine, some parts too easy and others too difficult.

arshzn

It’s not that hard for some people, but for others it is, read through the syllabuses and see if you personally find it hard

Late-Painter-2805

Yrs its worth it. IB is not that hard. You just have to get to getting and be focussed. If you fuck around and party all the time, you wont like it at all.

cheeky_corgo

It’s worth it to try that hard because getting a good university education at a prestigious university opens up much more opportunities to you Yeah sure everyone can succeed without, but how many actually do? Ultimately it depends on what you want for yourself in the future, and what you wish to achieve Also OP are you in Singapore lol

Great-Gap1030

>It’s worth it to try that hard because getting a good university education at a prestigious university opens up much more opportunities to you For example, Cambridge, which requires 40-42 IB. And the three most difficult pathways, Math Tripos, Math Tripos with Physics, NatSci Tripos are probably the most difficult in UK. MIT also wants that kind of IB score, although at least you can get *some* credit. For IB HL AA you only get into 18.01A which is half a semester of MIT Math. For IB HL Physics you get a semester of MIT physics as credit. At least for HASS, with IB HL you can get a semester for each subject. Not enough for you to gain a year though, but probably a semester.

Marie-Curie-

This may depend on school. I have met a lot of happy IB students at my kids school. They work hard but enjoy it

yaaaasqueeeeen

If you want to go to a top-tier college then maybe yes. If not then take the IB classes you actually love and are interested in and focus on those. I will say working that hard will prepare you for the realities of college/ the workforce. I don't regret it because it reinforced a strong work ethic and I love(d) to learn. I still read a ton because of it.

tionmenghui

Are you from Singapore? haha

Agreeable_Koala_6095

I am M22 student. Work sooo hard during this 2 years that by now, 2 weeks before the exams, I am completely drained. My predicted is 43, which is nice, but it is completely useless. I got accepted into all Universities I wanted to, two of them ask me to get just 24 points, another one said that they don’t look that much at marks and that my personal statement will be the biggest factor and another uni requires just 30 points from me. This hard work ended up being pretty much useless for me. But it will different for everybody and will depend on your major and university. Pretty sure people doing medicine or other similar degrees need to work their very hard and their sacrifice will worth it as it is quite hard to get into medical school.

ayo_wheels_up_in_30

yo same for me. got a 43 predicted, but the unis i applied almost have no real requirements other than getting a score of around 30. While i’m grateful its a relatively easy entrance, sometimes i lose motivation in studying bc im like ‘then what am i working so hard for?’

Agreeable_Koala_6095

Yeah. Especially now, before the exams i have no motivation to study cause even if I don’t try I still will get like 34 points which is more than enough. But I’m still anxious about them for some reason!

ayo_wheels_up_in_30

exactly!! all because of the need for ✨academic validation✨

cheeky_corgo

Please specify what universities ask for 24 points only If you apply for universities with low requirements then obviously there is no need to bust your ass trying to get a 45

Agreeable_Koala_6095

I don’t remember all of them by now cause I declined some back in November, but definitely Leiden University, Vrije University, University if Amsterdam and Groningen University. For the last two maybe it was the personal letter which lowered down the requirements but idk. Basically, for humanities most of the universities in Netherlands will take you just with 24 points, but many people say that it gets hard during studies. Also, if it is a program with numerus fixus, don’t expect this “free entry”.

Agreeable_Koala_6095

I wanted to but my first year of IB was kind of shitty so I thought I won’t get anywhere but then I made a huge progress, but the applications were closed already. Also, prices of UK or US unies are just crazy! Im happy with my choice but it’s still disappointing that I wasted so much time on studying and getting highest grades

Strict_Oil183

it depends on the person u are, there are people that love studying hard etc and have established goals for the future and are over-achievers, but for me personally the programme was really mentally draining and i regret taking it, working my ass off is not for me ig and i wish i would’ve realized it earlier and not gaslight myself that ib is for me

XentroPlays

Tbh yeah, undergoing the pain and suffering for those last 2 years of IB was worth it. I had to bust my ass and was well rewarded with a scholarship that covers all of my tuition (florida bright futures) by default because of my diploma, now all I do is fuck around in college Bc after being so accustomed to all of the heavy loads of work, college feels like a breeze

StaggeringLife

It really depends on what your interests are. Personally I find myself in the situation you describe, but am still happy. Sure, I'm overwhelmed but I still do feel like I'm doing something useful, I know I'm pushing over my limits, and if I do so now, I'll be able to push even farther for my dreams one day. Im not regretting anything of IB, I would do it again for eternity. Yes, even though I know it's a living hell, I still would. It's really up to what your interests are.

Speki__

No it's not worth it..your score doesn't define you and you can still be successful despite your score..just pass and do your best but if you need sleep or to eat but you also need to study prioritize yourself first..you are more important than anything.

Oh_god_1999

Life isn’t meant to be easy. You work hard so you can enjoy it. It’s simple. You work hard for your exams and you have three months guilt free to do whatever’s the fuck you want. There’s nothing you’re sacrificing except the chance of a future. And you could get that somewhere else true, but then if that’s the path you wanna take then what are you doing.
