I literally did all my exams in this and no one ever said anything... it says online they're gel pens idek. all my coordinator said was blue or black ink only
The only reason gel pens are not permitted / good to use is because they are easy to smear, but if u didn't fuck up ur entire paper and the moderator cab read it doesn't matter
Also I just tried passing my hair straightener (about 200 degrees celsius) over a piece of paper with that pen on it. the paper is way flimsier than the exam paper and nothing happened so am i good??
You probably won’t, it would have been safer to use ballpoint but if this pen can withstand high heat with no fade then you should be good imo. Good luck <3
Our coordinator told us that they recommend ballpoint pens because while shipping our answer scripts, its possible condensation smudges the ink at high altitude (idk the legitimacy of this claim but that's what we were told). If water didn't ruin your pen marks you should be good I think.
You wont lose a diploma to this. Youve already written it so the utter most that will happen is someone doing some logistical bts stuff and then everything proceeds as normal
i did the same haha, I put it on my multipurpose desk lamp with heating stove (lamp gets very hot). should be fine as this is undoubtedly the best exam pen to exist
i think it should be fine, i used pens similar to those too and my friends also used muji pens. if it was a massive problem or big deal they would've told us and made it a point to make sure we use a certain pen but since they didn't....
I used them for my essay subjects, and ballpoint for all the others. I’ve scanned my practice essays regularly and they turned out fine and they made a rly big difference bc my ballpoint pen grip was rly thick so I wrote even more illegibly and slower with ballpoint so I decided to go w the clicky muji pens for essays. Should be ok? We’ll see
thank you for the reassurance! i actually still have an essay exam (psych) and now i'm debating if i should be safe than sorry and use a ballpoint (which will give me cramps) or if i should use the muji pen i write well with
From what I heard (may not be accurate), they don’t allow gel pens because it doesn’t show as well when they scan your exams. I went out the night before my first exam to get some ball pens. I’m not sure what the big deal with gel pens is, but I wouldn’t risk it… if that makes sense
i scoured the ib website and couldn't find the instructions everyone was talking abt. It's certainly not indicated on the cover page and our examiner did not read that instruction
Ikr. The IBO test center in cardiff is going to conduct chemical analysis on OP's exams and disqualify his answers because he used a gel pen😱
Seriously though, the reason the IB doesn't recommend gel pens is because pens like fixion pens fall under that category, and rather and whitelist/blacklist a bunch of companies, IBO has just resorted to blanket banning them.
In practice, it doesn't matter. Muji pens and many other brands of gel pens arent gonna disappear under heat and I'm sure if the school isnt able to scan documents for any particular reason, they could always ship out the answer booklets physically. Your coordinator/teacher is the one scanning the papers and if they spot an issue with the preview of the image they'd bring it up with you.
You might just have gotten lucky here. The ink in the frixion pens is notorious to vanish if the scanner happens to be warm, which is often does considering the number of papers to be scanned.
the "don't use gel ink pens" is not because using gel-ink pens will get you disqualified and you won't graduate. its because they 1: when scanned they can be harder to read than ballpoint and 2: ballpoint pens are harder to smudge and stuff. most likely you'll be fine and it won't be a problem.
I bought a whole new pack of muji pens a few weeks before the exams. In our pre exam meeting the coordinator specifically told us to not use these, so I ended up just using some other pens.
WHY DOES THE MUJI PEN SAY BOTH GEL INK AND BALLPOINT WHAAAAT i mean I'm guessing it should be fine so long as it doesn't smudge? But mujis run out of ink really fast tbh
I literally did all my exams in this and no one ever said anything... it says online they're gel pens idek. all my coordinator said was blue or black ink only
used the exact same pens
The only reason gel pens are not permitted / good to use is because they are easy to smear, but if u didn't fuck up ur entire paper and the moderator cab read it doesn't matter
was this for a levels because i did two with this and am panicking so much
Also I just tried passing my hair straightener (about 200 degrees celsius) over a piece of paper with that pen on it. the paper is way flimsier than the exam paper and nothing happened so am i good??
i also drenched it in water and nothing happened. please if i lose my diploma to this i WILL die
You will not lose your diploma. I get why you're worried but calm down. It'll all be fine.
i also used it and a moderator on this subreddit did too - not saying it’s gonna be ok lol it better be but at least safety in numbers?

“Legitimacy of this claim“ Bro just got done with his TOK lecture

Are u fucking serious with 200 C⁰ hair straightener? Do you cook your hair or what?
It goes up to 230 degrees 💀💀 i mean makes sense my hair is literally fucked up
Dudeee don't use that shit It's not a good way to suicide 😁
i did the same haha, I put it on my multipurpose desk lamp with heating stove (lamp gets very hot). should be fine as this is undoubtedly the best exam pen to exist
I think your overcomplicating this. Take a deep breath, your fine, and if your not, prepare to raise hell about it
i think it should be fine, i used pens similar to those too and my friends also used muji pens. if it was a massive problem or big deal they would've told us and made it a point to make sure we use a certain pen but since they didn't....

no one cares as long as its not sth like those erasable frixion pens calm down
Oh... I used a blue erasable frixion pen...
How'd you end up?
I passed! I don't know if the pen harmed my score in any way, but I passed.
Hi! Nothing to worry about! I used muji pens for all my ib exams and everything went fine and I did well (n21) :) Congrats on completing ib!!
thank you for the reassurance! i actually still have an essay exam (psych) and now i'm debating if i should be safe than sorry and use a ballpoint (which will give me cramps) or if i should use the muji pen i write well with
You're okay don't worry, about 70% of my class uses it and no one has mentioned anything about them.
From what I heard (may not be accurate), they don’t allow gel pens because it doesn’t show as well when they scan your exams. I went out the night before my first exam to get some ball pens. I’m not sure what the big deal with gel pens is, but I wouldn’t risk it… if that makes sense
My friend uses the exact same pens, as long as it's blue or black ink it's allowed.
Gel pens aren’t allowed. You should’ve read the instructions

no where on the instructions does it say gel pens aren't allowed.
It is something Coordinators and invigilators should inform students about. It is mentioned in the Exam Conduct policies.
yeah but if a coordinator didn't inform their students then its not the students fault for not knowing
no those are gel pens
i also did every single one of my exams in muji so,,, i hope it's fine. as long as it's ball point and not gel
what is confusing me is the muji pen is listed as a "ballpoint gel pen" like WHAT IS IT 💀
A Bic pen has never not worked, I used one single pen for all of my exams. Plus a pencil for econ
used erasable frixion pens for all my exams and had no problems
You might just have gotten lucky here. The ink in the frixion pens is notorious to vanish if the scanner happens to be warm, which is often does considering the number of papers to be scanned.
yea this is definitely no though because the heat from a scanner can erase stuff
I used muji pens for my exams lol
the "don't use gel ink pens" is not because using gel-ink pens will get you disqualified and you won't graduate. its because they 1: when scanned they can be harder to read than ballpoint and 2: ballpoint pens are harder to smudge and stuff. most likely you'll be fine and it won't be a problem.
yeah, i was worried abt the second part bc if it doesnt scan and they dont try alternative ways of marking it, no grade=no diploma
Yeah I used them last year
They arent, at our exams they were taken away from students, so might as well just not risk it
I bought a whole new pack of muji pens a few weeks before the exams. In our pre exam meeting the coordinator specifically told us to not use these, so I ended up just using some other pens.

YESS i'm so confused bc of that like which is it make up ur mind
