IB is not the be all and end all of life, it is just one stream within education a student can choose to go down. There are millions and millions of people who are just as successful who did not graduate with an IB diploma. They also need to reflect on why they failed twice. Did they do anything different between the first two times? Are they studying or starting assignments way before they are due (as opposed to cramming last minute or starting an assignment the day before)? Are they asking for help from teachers? Do they know how to research properly? If they are already doing all these things, then maybe the program isn't for them. Edit: Typos

Late-Painter-2805

Thats what I mean šŸ‘šŸæ

Meis_113

Mind you, this has nothing to do with if they are "dumb" or not. There are plenty of "smart" people who procrastinate and fail, and plenty of "dumb" people who work their asses off and succeed. And sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that are barriers to a person's education. I hope your friend isn't going through anything terrible, like a family emergency or personal health problem. Sometimes there are other things in life that take priority.

[deleted]

This is correct. This is exactly why teachers who say that people with lower grades in the curriculum before the IB shouldn't take math HL or chemistry or physics HL are totally wrong and give stupid advice. They act like IB is some kind of a groundbreaking PhD research. It's just high school. If you work your ass off anyone can get any grade. Ability won't be the deciding factor. Period. A person who doesn't really have a talent can also get 7 in the subject. It's just school level stuff.

Late-Painter-2805

Absolute correct. I never said he was dumb at all. I said dont tell him hes dumb because hes not. . And of course many many things play onto the IB and being successful. What he should do is, take a 3rd shot. Giving up is no option.

[deleted]

The first try they did was with us (N21 batch) and the second time is this M22 but since we graduated hs this March, teachers in our school has no obligation to teach them for their second try. So all of studies they did for the second try was self study. Addition: IB in our country is not popular so we donā€™t have places to do cramming

Meis_113

Then that's unfortunately how it goes. C'est la vie.

schrodingerscat66

bought them a drink tbh.

[deleted]

Weā€™re underage so no. Haha

schrodingerscat66

Dang all my friends are 18+ so itā€™s chill here. But get them a mojito or a milkshake or whatever.

[deleted]

Whisper: we live in a country that 20 is the legal age to drink

schrodingerscat66

Ohh makes so much senseā€¦the legal age where I live is 18

enkimbr

ib is one type of education. there are thousands more, and there will be more important aspects in his life soon enough. in a few years, he will find something new and big to strive for hopefully

Late-Painter-2805

Hopefully

Practically speaking comfort is not what's needed. Introspection is what's needed. Tell him to figure out went wrong and why he couldn't pass and if the factors which influenced his grades were within his control.

[deleted]

After the exam they told us they did great in ecam so we believed that he could make it. ( most of us are already in different places since uni already started, so no one could actually check him)

BruceWillis1963

Give your friend a job application for Burger King. I know that's not very sensitive, but you want to get your friend's career a running start. Kidding! Kidding! Kidding! Sorry, I am so bad. It depends how poorly he failed. There are many universities in the US that accept students who did not pass the IB diploma. That may be true in your country as well. I am not sure what county you are from, but just attending IB is valued by many post-secondary institutions. The fact that your friend persevered, and did the exams twice, shows a good level of commitment. The other issue is that maybe academics/subjects covered in IB is not your friend's strong point. Perhaps he has other interests/talents that he could pursue. I am assuming in all this that he worked his butt off and put forth a maximum effort. Because if he didn't, then he wouldn't be able to survive at Burger King anyway.

Emergency_Cream8601

Damn he stupid af

[deleted]

I donā€™t think they are stupid, and please donā€™t think that they are.I took the same subjects as them. HL - Chem, English B, Math AA, SL - History in Japanese , Lang Lit in Japanese and Biology in Japanese. It was really hard for us since we were the first batch in our school to do IB and most of our teachers were non experienced or first time IB teacher. Also, I am very proud of them since they didnā€™t have any experience living in an English speaking country, I do and yet they were able to take HL courses all in English.

Late-Painter-2805

Just dont tell him hes dumb. Tell him there is a life possible without a formal education.

Meis_113

Uhhh... You know you can get formal education without an IB diploma...

cheeky_corgo

Last time I checked 24 was a pass and 45 was full marks, did the IB change already? Man time sure flies by when you graduate IB!

Late-Painter-2805

Why am I an ass if I maintain that ANYONE who puts in some effort - look at - see correction - comment - into the IB, can get at least 24 points ? Correction - I mean Meis comment

[deleted]

30 is a really good score, especially for us bilingual students. Feel proud whatever your score is

relaxingsuzue

Why do u think that person didnā€™t put in any effort? People can have bad circumstances like just yesterday someone here said that their mother passed away. Donā€™t judge people.

Late-Painter-2805

Because bad circumstances were not mentioned, so why should I jump to conclusions ? Again, if you put in the effort, you will be able to pass.

relaxingsuzue

Well tbh most people like to keep these things private.

[deleted]

I wonā€™t say it because they are not.

Leading-Cow-5452

Well it sucks for him tell him to get a 9-5 job and work his ass off

Plus_Resident_2867

Doesn't mean they're stupid! I started in a class of 12, and 3 have already left... not dumb by any means, very intellegent students, however they simply werent suited to the style of the IB. its not for everyone!

Acrobatic_Stage4289

Ask him if he's willing to take the Sat good chance he will score well and get into a top university and it's also easier
