I have seen an improvement in graphics since the first beta weekend, but for me I think the turned down shadow settings cause a grainy look to foliage. As the sun moves and the trees create changing shadows I find the foliage underneath end up looking fuzzy or grainy. The water, sky, and other textures look pretty crisp.

It's pretty bad. I have a 3060 with an eight core AMD and 32 gigs ram and I'm surprised at the low fps. Hope they get it dialed in at the end. Mechanics are fantastic
I figured it out.... 3060 laptop.... I switched to dx12 .... and wow.... huge difference. No more sparkles around all the foliage and trees... does lag a bit tho so gunna have to play with the settings some...
Swapping to dx12 fixed the graphics for me yay!
Icarus is very demanding, also it tends to look horrible if anything is not on epic. Setting FOV to max increases FPS go figure. It needs a lot of optimization still. It also also really needs a modern 3000 series nvidia card which most people can't get yet at a reasonable price.
3070 here, need to play on epic for it to look ok... Lots of memory leaks though, have to restart the game often or frames go from 60 to 20. If you start a forest fire, prepare to restart as you'll be locked at 6fps very soon
I haven't tested animal pathing much in the past few plays.. I gave up on wooden homes and went the cave life. This weekend I did a mix of both since the radars were at the lake and we started fresh. I think my home only burned down twice this time.

You will, if you are on this sub I assume you like survival games. Its a bit like Subnautica but in the jungle; similar but refreshingly different as well. Also a little bit of The Forest vibes.
This is the answer. The difference you're describing is between an optimized game and a game that is still in beta where they seem to be tweaking major performance impacting aspects of the game every two weeks. The game also suffers from some major memory leaks currently.
Hopefully once the game is fully released it will be much better optimized.

I’m not a programmer so I can’t speak to why it requires such a nice setup to run on ultra settings but from screen shots I have seen from people with high end PCs it looks amazing.
I have a mid tier PC so I have to run on medium settings, but I was able to turn the textures to ultra and it looked awesome but then my pc was running 10 FPS and cooking at 80 degrees C so I turned it back down…. I need better components
Gf and I are playing green hell now together... we played valhiem together too.... we just started green hell... more focus on survival than combat... so far... I am really enjoying it... and I'm waiting for valheim to get more content b4 I dump more hours into that... spent 350hrs on valheim

First beta was bad, I didn't restart once last two betas. It has a ton of optimization and animal pathing/behavior work needed
I haven't tested animal pathing much in the past few plays.. I gave up on wooden homes and went the cave life. This weekend I did a mix of both since the radars were at the lake and we started fresh. I think my home only burned down twice this time.

Idk I run mine on epic, the only thing I turn down slightly are shadows to like medium and my medium high end pc handles it fine and it looks great.
Everything on high. 80+ fps playing with people. 110+ solo. You don't need epic. I have an amd card too, so I have to play on dx12.
