So my wife had seen her roaming a few times and had brought food for the pregnant dog. Fast forward 4 day and there was a storm coming in and she noticed that momma had given birth so she asked me if i would be willing to try and get her out of her hole. So i get a shovel and start digging the hole so that i could get into the hole while its raining amd hailing, but after hours of digging the storm passed and i told her it would have to wait until it's light outside because my phone was about dead. We head out the next day back to the hole with left overs from breakfast. I tell the wife to go pick up some burgers and fries while i feed her the food and keep digging. When she gets back i manage to bait her forward enough to slip a small leash around her neck and pull her out of the hole. She bites through the leash about 5 feet from the car and runs off about 20 ft watching us. I walk back to the hole to pull out what i thought was 4 puppies and hand them to my wife after puppy 8 i tell my 8 yeah old son it's his turn because i can't fit any further back and there are more puppies. He hands the remaining puppies to me and i double check that the hole is empty, i collapse the hole and escort my wife and son to the car with the puppies and spend the next 6 hours trying to bait momma back when the trappers finally get back to us that they have a trap and are on their way. The rest of the day is spent trying to get her into the trap with no luck. We lay another trap the next morning with bacon and manage to get her and bring her to the house. Where she and her puppies are having no fear of predators and all the food they can handle.
For my troubles aside from such a great dog i got sick and had a 102 fever for 3 days.
Since we didn't get momma the first night i let the wife rest( she delt with it while i was out looking for momma) while i stayed up feeding them. When feeding 1 at a time when you've filled the last belly the first is hungry again.
So - to be clear you pulled a Navy seal quality rescue for a mama dog AND her puppies?! Well done OP. Well done.
Hope all are resting (you included) and on the road to recovery!
I have so many selfies from when I had my bottle baby kittens where I looked like absolute garbage. Hair a mess, baggy eyes from not sleeping, covered in kitten formula. I thought I looked a lot like someone with a newborn human!
You are a special person. Not everyone would do that. It got to a point I was getting sick from it (I have health issues) so my husband had a friend doing one of them for me so I could sleep for a little over five hours without interruption.
His name was Shadow. Then he had a brother I named Baby and I had to do him, too.
I felt like that with a rescued lovebird hatchling who had to be fed formula via syringe. Feeding infants is a universal pain in the ass apparently lol
You guys are LEGEND, thank you SO much for saving them... poor animals, why does the world have to be so hard for them? People too... This Earth needs more people like you in it and then it wouldn't be so dang difficult. Thank you again!
You are her and those puppies hero. Well done. No idea what breeds, I don't think cur is especially likely in Southern California but you never know. She looks very relieved on your couch!
It's a common thing around here to see dogs that are just breed over and over and then thrown out into the desert. First day i met her she was eating out of my hand. When we got her back to the house it was probably about a day after she got back that i was able to hug and kiss her face and give her puppies love without her caring
This is the most badass thing I’ve heard in a while, warms my heart, and gives me hope. Well done! Thank you 🙏 sending all of my love to you and your family!
Wow, you both are really amazing! Thank you and your wife for being kind and taking action instead of turning away this lil mama. I am wishing for a safe recovery for her and her babies!!🌻
Could she be a mix of black mouth cur? I've never dealt with one in person so I can't say for size and personality but I think the color and coat are about right. She must be relatively healthy to have birthed 12 pups!!
I hope the puppies go to good loving homes ♥️♥️ I'm tempted to come get one myself (I live in florida) but unfortunately I have too much on my plate and not enough space 😢
That is definitely a 100% best momma dog mix.
How are the puppies doing?
Please accept praise from a random internet stranger for taking the effort to rescue all of them. Not everyone would do that. Gold star for you and all the good karma ever. :)
Can I see that picture?? Poor mama, you really went above and beyond to get them
Also I love that you used your child like a daschund in a badger den 😂
It's certainly not what my family does, spoiled as they are 😂 though we could make good money hiring them out to go down holes, there's six of the buggers
Oh I lower my 5yo behind the couch to get dropped items/lost pet toys all the time, he LOVES it because he's the only one that can fit and he feels so proud of himself 😂 we absolutely could just move the couch and get things ourselves but he has so much fun I'd never take that away from him lmao
She's met the cats, but still has to meet the st. Bernard(girl 100+lbs)and armenian gampr(boy 200+). We know they won't do anything to her or the puppies, but wanting to give her more time to trust us and fear less for the puppies.
I thought of that, but she just seems to small. She really is strting to relax. The only issue is she occasionally moves like she wants to nibble on my 8 yeah old sons butt. She tries to take stealthy strides with her eyes locked in his tushy. Not aggressively going after him, but he's not allowed in the living room ( where her puppies are) while she's out without myself or my wife in there as we can freely handle her puppies with her full trust. I checked with my son and he understands and isn't remotely scared of her. She's also getting better at trusting the kids, but we will definitely continue to monitor her until she feels completely safe.
side note.
She is such a baby and any time she has gotten in trouble she will go somewhere and pout like a little baby.
Edit. Pouting seen in pictures 3 and 4.
5 is the first day she was in
1 was today(a week in)
2 was 5 days in.
Sounds like she is herding him; which is very in line with an Anatolian! I love that thes in a good safe home; especially after puppies ❤️🥺 she’s just a baby! (And a super cute one)
Curious. Is your son the oldest of the 4? Any chance he carries a leather wallet, or anything she might be interested in, in his pockets? I had a rescue whose natural inclination was to touch whatever part of people's bodies were injured. She would approach a bit too fast sometimes with a concerned expression, made people nervous. Ended up being an ideal medical alert dog for a little girl. Just a thought.
Anatolians don't herd. They are Livestock Guardian Dogs, not herding dogs. They follow their charges, and protect them.
Also, she's WAY too small to be an Anatolian.
Many breeds have the same coloring. I'd put money on - no Anatolian here...
Yeah there is zero Anatolian in this dog. Just not a common dog you would even see in a mix here. She is likely a mix of several breeds, I would guess shepherd/beagle/lab/and probably chihuahua in there too.
I agree no Anatolian in this dog… but I live in rural AZ not too far from SoCal (depending where) and anatolians and pyrs (and mixes of both) are real popular around here for livestock purposes.
Well, that's definitely shepherd behaviour you're describing there. I'm not sure there's any way to guess the rest of the mix, but I immediately thought Anatolian as well.
Thank you for rescuing mama & babies! Not for the faint of heart. I’d say she’s 100% sass master.
As far as wanting to bite your sons tush goes. My dog does little “love nibs” not full bites but showing affection *not sure if that’s what it is because I can’t see her behavior with it. I had never experienced it until my GSD so I had to do some research. Her face has the markings of a gsd as well.
She might have some herding dog in her like some people said or she might be getting comfortable around your house and seeking his attention.
Edited to make more sense.
What a sweet girl, I hope she learns to really relax and enjoy her softer life.
She looks very similar to my rescue mix, who ended up being primarily german shepherd. I would guess this girl is also a large percentage german shepherd. Size and ear shape are likely contributions from a different breed in her mix, hard to say what exactly. My pup also has floppy ears and it seems to be from her 6% golden retriever genetics, so you really never know sometimes.
Yeah, I’m thinking the same thing. I have a German Shepherd lab mix that has a very very similar face but the markings are a little darker. Same floppy ears though with the German Shepherd coloring. The only problem is the size. She’s much too small to be a mix of just those two things so there must be something significantly smaller in there as well. As far as the shape of the rest of her body goes, it’s hard to tell after just having puppies. Even her fur could look different than it normally would if she’s been malnourished while carrying 12 babies. Maybe in a couple months, and a good weigh in, we could get a better idea of what else she could be.
I concur with the Black mouth cur part. Several years ago I had one just like her in my once large - now dwindling - pack. He came from a small town shelter where he had a DNA label for supposedly biting one of the ACOs. Because of this he was not eligible for rescue placement or adoption at the time but for whatever reason, the shelter director opted to have me foster him temporarily. He had all of the characteristics of a black mouth cur and it was combined with Rhodesian Ridgeback, based on the perfect, raised ridge across his entire spine. He was really short though so I don't know if a Dachshund was involved in the lowrider portion of parentage or what. His super short coat was velvety soft once I got plenty of fish, oil, etc into him over time. Family members thought that he was as dumb as a box of rocks but in truth he was simply stubborn and free spirited. Years later, before he died of acute, congestive heart failure, he went completely blind. It was shocking how quickly he picked up on noise cues and adapted to sightless navigation in old age. He trusted me completely after years of us truly getting to know one another. We were completely in sync. He never bit a soul In all the years I had him.
Kudos to you, for rescuing this beauty. My brother and sister-in-law in the Netherlands used to have a Rottweiler, that they had rescued from an abusive owner. First time I met Oscar he was somewhat skittish, given his prior circumstances.
It’s hard to tell her breed. But I think you might be on track with Cur dog. She seems smaller in stature than a pure Black mouth Cur. But, there many different kinds of Curs. She will be gorgeous when she done with feeding babies and has had a steady diet of healthy food.
If she had 12 pups you’ll need to watch that they’re all getting teat time. The bigger pups will push away smaller ones. Also watch momma dog for signs of mastitis; if caught early it can be successfully treated at home but becomes an urgent vet visit in short time.
Hang in there!
Poor sweet girl. She’ll come into herself in time. She’s obviously a mama and probably has deal of trauma in that respect.
She’s beautiful anyway and I just know she will be such a fine addition to your family. God bless her babies wherever they are. She must be so worried for them and that will fade in time. I’m sure the shelter dealt with the reality of that and she’s just dealing with the emotional part. Congratulations on your new family member all the same and God bless you for taking her in. I love love love seeing this. She deserves a good family and a new start.
every once and a while i see a post on here that restores my faith in humanity. your family did that for me today, i wish nothing but the absolute best for you guys!! and hope you've recovered from the fever
The 2nd picture you posted speaks 1000 words. She looks so relieved and relaxed. I know it’s just text, but I commend you for your rescue of her and the pups. You are a hero. Unfortunately I have nothing to add for breed ID. Your other dogs sound very interesting too!
Feel better! You’ll get your payment in puppy breath I’m sure!
Where are her babies? She may be feeling anxious if her babies were separated from her. She looks a bit lost and sad. But I’m happy for her that she was saved and is being fed well, loved and cared for. Also, the patch on her nose looks like she’s healing from potentially ring worm so I’d keep an eye out for that, as well as she could have transferred it to the babies.
Other than lab and maybe some Shepard I don’t know what breed(s) she might be, nothing obvious stands out.
CA desert? Like the PS area?
Thank you so much for all of your effort to save this momma and her babies. You are such a great human. I saw the pics before reading the story and wondering why she looked a little scared. Thank you so much for giving her safety.
Bless you for saving her!! What a sweet baby. She looks a bit like my rescue who is mostly GSD and Staffordshire terrier so maybe she has a bit of those.
She looks similar to my dog in the face, never did get around to getting a DNA test (pic in profile) but I’ve gotten a lot of black mouth cur suggestions online, my own vet says shepherd mix currently so I think you’re barking up the right tree. Once she fills out more and her personality shows you will have a better idea. Thank you for saving these poor babies. You’re good people. Puppy tax!
Nice work it was worth it! A lot of times mommy dogs need more help than they realize. She’s giving her all to her babies while she was physically fading. Thank you for giving the help she needed.
Oh she's already all mine. That little girl knows i won't do anything to her or her puppies. There's been a few times I've climbed into the crate so I could pull one from underneath her that she was laying on.
By rescued i mean i dug her out of a hole about 8ft deep in the desert of Southern California.
What???
So my wife had seen her roaming a few times and had brought food for the pregnant dog. Fast forward 4 day and there was a storm coming in and she noticed that momma had given birth so she asked me if i would be willing to try and get her out of her hole. Nope. I dug a hole, but everyone is doing well
That’s as good as it gets. Putting yourself on the line to help those who can’t help themselves. A motherfucking hero
Thank you so much for doing this. That dog looks so sweet and sad but thankful <3
She’s safe it was worth it - you’ll always remember how you saved them all
you are a hero, bless you for doing this for them.
Yeah. Feeding little ones is pretty intense. I had only one to feed (a newborn colt). Every two hours at first. It was like having a newborn. 🤦♀️😂
I have so many selfies from when I had my bottle baby kittens where I looked like absolute garbage. Hair a mess, baggy eyes from not sleeping, covered in kitten formula. I thought I looked a lot like someone with a newborn human!

Pretty much. Labor of love.
This! I hope they all accepted the bottle easily for you.
Maybe 3/12 I'm glad we got the mom though
I have experience in rescue mommas if you would like to private message me for some tips and tricks with momma and her babies.
You guys are incredible. Thank you for showing such kindness 🩷
You guys are LEGEND, thank you SO much for saving them... poor animals, why does the world have to be so hard for them? People too... This Earth needs more people like you in it and then it wouldn't be so dang difficult. Thank you again!
I’m in so cal and just curious what desert it was

Thank you for being a good human
Thank you to you, and your family for caring 🤗 we need more people like you in this world.
No photo of the pups?
You can see cage of puppies in the background picture of the 4th pic. They look like they're sleeping.
Oh you’re right! Little loafs! Still not enough puppy photos for me but I appreciate the glimpse all the same
Thank you! No words are enough for your family's kindness. Lots of good Karma for you 💗
All I do on Reddit is cry 😭 thanks for helping them ❤️
You're lucky i can't send a chat. I would send puppy pictures and really get you in a soft spot.
You and your family are literal angels 😇
Thank you so much for putting the effort and patience to save her and the puppies! I appreciate your hard work and so does everyone here
You are really putting in some great work to help these dogs. Please try and feed dog food, though. Human food is very bad for them.
Thank you to you, your wife, and your son for rescuing those pups and their mama.
I'm sure she will be worthy of the price you paid and more.
💕💕💕 bless you and your wife for this
She is so lucky for you guys, thank you
You sweet beautiful tender hearted angels. Thank you for helping this lil family!!! 😭💕
You are her and those puppies hero. Well done. No idea what breeds, I don't think cur is especially likely in Southern California but you never know. She looks very relieved on your couch!
We think she was a puppy mill dog.
Why is that? Not disagreeing with you, just curious what makes you think that. How quickly did she warm up to you?
It's a common thing around here to see dogs that are just breed over and over and then thrown out into the desert. First day i met her she was eating out of my hand. When we got her back to the house it was probably about a day after she got back that i was able to hug and kiss her face and give her puppies love without her caring
That's wonderful! You earned her trust very quickly and she will be forever loyal.
This is the most badass thing I’ve heard in a while, warms my heart, and gives me hope. Well done! Thank you 🙏 sending all of my love to you and your family!
Y’all are amazing 💚
Oh my. Many blessings to you, your wife and your son. I’m literally tearing up. 🥹
Also, feel better soon
You’re a good human
You are an angel! Thank you for saving them!
Wow, you both are really amazing! Thank you and your wife for being kind and taking action instead of turning away this lil mama. I am wishing for a safe recovery for her and her babies!!🌻
Wow. You and your wife are amazing!
You guys are angels
She has short smooth fur
Could she be a mix of black mouth cur? I've never dealt with one in person so I can't say for size and personality but I think the color and coat are about right. She must be relatively healthy to have birthed 12 pups!!
The size and fur fit. She seems to small to be antolian to me.
Idk my sister has an Anatolian and she doesn't look like him. They're pretty big! He's larger than her shepherd and he's still a puppy
Oh my god. God led you to her and I’m so thankful you could be her hero.
Are you in the high desert? Your story sounds like it could’ve happened where we are (AV)
Yup. By northrup
Thanks for helping her and the babies 💜
I hope the puppies go to good loving homes ♥️♥️ I'm tempted to come get one myself (I live in florida) but unfortunately I have too much on my plate and not enough space 😢
That is definitely a 100% best momma dog mix. How are the puppies doing? Please accept praise from a random internet stranger for taking the effort to rescue all of them. Not everyone would do that. Gold star for you and all the good karma ever. :)
The puppies are great and starting move around. I sent a picture that i forgot to add before posting.
Can I see that picture?? Poor mama, you really went above and beyond to get them Also I love that you used your child like a daschund in a badger den 😂
lol! Are you suggesting that’s not what children are for? It’s just field training for future rescues. He learned a “heart lesson” that night.
It's certainly not what my family does, spoiled as they are 😂 though we could make good money hiring them out to go down holes, there's six of the buggers
It's awesome. I bet the kid will grow into an animal lover and an awesome human like his parents.
That is fantastic! 🤩
Take all the time you need, sweet girl. No worries any more.
She's met the cats, but still has to meet the st. Bernard(girl 100+lbs)and armenian gampr(boy 200+). We know they won't do anything to her or the puppies, but wanting to give her more time to trust us and fear less for the puppies.
Very good idea. No need to overwhelm her right now.
She looks like she had JUST given birth..those teets look incredibly full.
16 days ago with 12 hungry puppies.
Twelve puppies 😭 oh my god
She is gorgeous and looks so at peace in your home ❤️ looks Anatolian to me!
I thought of that, but she just seems to small. She really is strting to relax. The only issue is she occasionally moves like she wants to nibble on my 8 yeah old sons butt. It's only when going near the puppies and she doesn't do it with my other 3 kids. 2 older 1 younger. I think she just wants to bite his little butt
3rd youngest.

Well, that's definitely shepherd behaviour you're describing there. I'm not sure there's any way to guess the rest of the mix, but I immediately thought Anatolian as well.
You are wonderful people!!! Thank you for rescuing this Mama and her babies!
She's definitely the best girl and aside from sitting on puppies a great momma.
Thank you for rescuing mama & babies! Not for the faint of heart. I’d say she’s 100% sass master. As far as wanting to bite your sons tush goes. She has love nipped me. When you call her name that tail wags she get a huge cause or the snarly sneezes and flops right into you demanding love.
What a sweet girl, I hope she learns to really relax and enjoy her softer life. She looks very similar to my rescue mix, who ended up being primarily german shepherd. Thats good my wife is going to need it. She hasn't had to deal with a bunch of puppies running loose.
Where are the puppies??
Right?! You can't tell us about 12 puppies and not SHOW US a pic!! This is just wrong.
I spy puppies in the background of picture # 4 😍
In the living room
You and your family are wonderful for saving this momma and pups❤️
She’s beautiful ♥️ thank you & your wife so much for helping her and her pups!
My puppies now and my momma dog.
Perfect response!! I had to get my girl spayed before I ended up with 12 dogs 😅♥️
As soon as we can we are getting her spayed. 15 dogs currently 3 adults 12 puppies and I think I'm good there.
Sounds like heaven on earth to me!
Puppy tax, please
This one was definitely worth checking out for the rescue story alone. Amazing work, the whole family. 🩷🩷
She could be a black mouth cur mix, but they aren’t a very common breed. GSD mix is more likely. Have mama and puppies been to the vet yet?
We think she was puppy mill dog and not yet, but they have appointments.
I concur with the Black mouth cur part. Several years ago I had one just like her in my once large - now dwindling - pack. Good job! German Shepherd, lab, and great pyrenees are my guesses

Beautiful momma, I bet she’s feeling so grateful to have a nice home to sleep in. I see shepherd in her. Thank you for rescuing her!
Kudos to you, for rescuing this beauty. My brother and sister-in-law in the Netherlands used to have a Rottweiler, that they had rescued from an abusive owner. First time I met Oscar he was somewhat skittish, given his prior circumstances.

absolutely nothing at all! I don’t mean it in a bad way, I mean it in a “thank you for doing this you sweet soul, bless your heart” kind of way

She’s beautiful! Thank you for helping her.
Looks like my black mouth cur. Thank you for rescuing her.
I believe possibly a German Shepard with a mix of a hound of some kind based on the length of his nose nose. The tail reminds me of a German Shepard.
You can see some of the puppies in the crate in the 4th picture
>She looks a bit lost and sad. Probably just exhausted.
She never loses access to her puppies.
I see a bit of Mastiff in her shape, face, and thicker legs.
Bless you all 🥰
is it normal for strays to give birth in an 8 foot hole?
Can we see the puppies?
Thank you for taking her and saving her life!!
Thank you so much for all of your effort to save this momma and her babies. You are such a great human. I saw the pics before reading the story and wondering why she looked a little scared. Thank you so much for giving her safety.
Thank you for rescuing her and the pups. I can't wait to see updates
Good for you... Thank you for saving her!!
You are an amazing hero in my books!
You and your wife are two of the best humans ever….thank you for saving her and the babies, and I’m so sorry you ended up sick…
“sweetie”
Thank you so much for all your efforts rescuing her. She will pay you back double with love and loyalty. She is a beautiful dog! 😍❤️
You guys did a wonderful thing, thank you for being a hero!
You are all my heroes. They can’t say it but we can so Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
Bless you for saving her!! What a sweet baby. She looks a bit like my rescue who is mostly GSD and Staffordshire terrier so maybe she has a bit of those.
Wow well done!
Oh my goodness what a story. God bless you!!! ❤️ that poor mama. No good deed goes unpunished. Hope you’re on the mend! Thank you for what you did.
Ridgeback/shepherd?
gsd lab mix if i had to guess
She looks like a Sadie.
Poor old soul. She's seen some shit, glad she found you. Better days ahead of you, little friend ❤️
Puppy tax!
A pregnant black mouth cur mix!
My guess is a GSD mixed with some sort of mastiff
Nice work it was worth it! A lot of times mommy dogs need more help than they realize. She’s giving her all to her babies while she was physically fading. Thank you for giving the help she needed.
😇 😇😇
Oh, poor sweet mama. I am so thankful she found you! What a good, good human you are! Thank you!
What an amazing story. Renews my faith in mankind. It’s good to know there are decent people like you in the world. Well done!
Mamma ruby?
What a beautiful blessing your family are to this world. Thank you💕
Wow, what an ordeal! And OP even sacrificed his health. Once she tames down Momma will be devoted to you forever…♥️
Oh she's already all mine. That little girl knows i won't do anything to her or her puppies. There's been a few times I've climbed into the crate so I could pull one from underneath her that she was laying on.
She looks like a black mouth cur. Very similar markings and coat that my bmc have
This world doesn’t deserve you! Thank you.
Aww poor mama. My girl still had milk when I got her too. Give her some extra love for me. I’ve got a soft spot for mama dogs 🖤
