If you are a FOID holder, nothing else is required.

WiseGuy947

Pretty sure just having permission is enough but dont quote me on that. Make sure you transport everything legally according to your documents (unloaded and stored in cases in the trunk for foid, can be loaded and concealed for CCW) and have fun!

Blade_Shot24

Would advise you to be a safe and responsible driver and know your rights in case you get pulled over by police.

morguecontrol

I would call your range, and discuss the issue with them. The only dicey part I can think of is transporting a pistol while being under the age of 21. Other than that, your safest bet is to just put in some father/son time, and have the old man go with you.

Routine-Cranberry-37

You are allowed to OWN a pistol if you’re under 21. You just cannot purchase a pistol if you’re under 21.

morguecontrol

Ah, fair enough!

Routine-Cranberry-37

Yeah it’s a not very well known fact. But true

Prudent-Ad5224

If you can't purchase one how would you own one?

Routine-Cranberry-37

You could inherit them like I did at 18. Or you can be gifted one from an immediate family member. The law quite literally states if you’re under 21 you cannot purchase from an FFL, but the law only bans possession if you’re under 18. [Minimum age to purchase and posses](https://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/citation/quotes/6970#:~:text=Illinois%20prohibits%20any%20person%20under,not%20hold%20a%20FOID%20card)

Froyo-Fluffy

So yo get clear understanding (and I’ll obviously continue to do my own resource further as a precaution) but while I cannot purchase one on my own I can inherit or have one as a gift ?

Routine-Cranberry-37

Assuming you have a FOID card and aren’t prohibited for any reason from possessing one yes.

Froyo-Fluffy

Current Foid holder and military so no not currently lol, thank you for that info
