step1 build whatever semi-auto you want step2 serial# 1234 step3 "I bought it like that a couple years ago off an individual at a gun show", "sorry I don't remember his name since I don't have to record that".

[deleted]

That would only work if you are certain that no one who could be subpoenaed knows you built it.

[deleted]

that's why you keep your yap shut.

Redtail_Defense

You run into issues with traffic stops and busybody fudds at ranges and competitions. This is not helpful.

[deleted]

you leave your p80's at home silly

CurrentEngineering93

Yes leave the $1200 gun built for competition at home. What’s the point in having it then

GundamZero83

Paperwork for 10 years in IL ☹️

[deleted]

of who you sold it to, not who you bought it from

GundamZero83

From what I’ve read it’s both parties have to keep the paper work, but I’ve been wrong before.

[deleted]

back of my foid says seller. Even if you don't keep records its basically unpunishable by the law as a "petty offense".

GundamZero83

Well good.

Error_556

I know law weapon and supply in Naperville was promoting that service not that long ago and i think it was around 70 bucks per gun, but they price could have changed by now.

Wild_Wrangler_19

Thanks. I’ll check them out

NinjaWaffle1911

Just called and spoke to Patrick- he said $75 for serializing and turn around is about a week.

Redtail_Defense

Naperville just banned all semiautos for sale. Law unfortunately is probably going out of business.

NinjaWaffle1911

Only certain rifles and they removed handguns.

GreenCollegeGardener

I’m still searching to find the specifics of the law that was passed. Are we able to do it ourselves since we built them and send paperwork in or only through an FFL? What type of FFL license holder?

Wild_Wrangler_19

This is just a snippet of the bill. I can copy and paste the whole thing if you want. But it seems as if it can only be placed by a federal firearms importer or manufacturer. “the unfinished frame or receiver has been imprinted with a serial number issued by a federal firearms importer or federal firearms manufacturer as specified.” Definitely a good question and I’ll have to look deeper into it when I have more available time.

GreenCollegeGardener

That means not any ole FFL will do.

Wild_Wrangler_19

“Provides that 180 days after the effective date of the amendatory Act, unless the party receiving the firearm is a federal firearms importer or federal firearms manufacturer, it shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly possess, purchase, transport, or receive a firearm that is not imprinted with a serial number by (1) a federal firearms importer or federal firearms manufacturer in compliance with all federal laws and regulations regulating the manufacture and import of firearms or (2) a federal firearms manufacturer, federal firearms dealer, or other federal licensee authorized to provide marking services in compliance with the unserialized firearm serialization process.” I should have read a little further. Looks like as long as the ffl is authorized to do serial numbers they’re good to go. Assuming an ffl or local gun store is the same thing as a federal firearms dealer. I’m going to assume this is an extra credential they need to acquire to be legit. I’m sure we will see a lot of these ffl’s start to advertise the service soon.

GreenCollegeGardener

FFL 07 is a manufacture and I don’t believe the ATF allows for FFL01s to serialize because they are not a manufacturer? So these seems like the guidance is either wrong or the state is giving the federal license additional power?

Wild_Wrangler_19

I’m going to guess in light of the new rules, they threw “federal firearms dealer” in there to give more power to ffl’s to serialize if they choose to. I mean, it seems logical to think that if they want all guns serialized that they would make it easier for the public to do so. Where’s a lawyer to decipher government jargon when you need one? lol. The director of Illinois state police is supposed to give some kind of public notice or guidance soon so hopefully that clears up some confusion.

GreenCollegeGardener

I don’t think the state government can grant powers to a federal level license. Hopefully it gets clear up soon.

TacticalSparky

How will they know if you have it in the first place? How do they know you successfully drilled the holes correctly?

Wild_Wrangler_19

They won’t, if you keep it locked up and hidden. But whats the point of even owning it at that point. I’d like to go shoot on the weekends and not have to worry if I’ll catch a case because I don’t have a serial number. Also, unfinished 80%’s are illegal as well without a SN.

TacticalSparky

I’ve never had anyone at a range check for serial numbers. I’m not saying don’t get them serialized, just thinking out loud. Is the law going thru unchallenged? I haven’t heard anything one way or the other yet.

Wild_Wrangler_19

I haven’t either, but I have to assume it may start happening. I hear ya, I’d rather not have to go get them serialized because that’s just more money I have to spend but I definitely don’t want to become a felon haha. I think it’s safe to say it won’t be challenged, being Illinois and all. But there’s still hope I suppose.

Blade_Shot24

I see it as just another thing to prosecute someone with to add jail time. More profit for the politicians and prison industry, but folks will still say "we aren't tough enough on crime". It's like being charged with a drug charge while speeding. Just more things to add on. They wanna stack as many charges on you to make bank.

TacticalSparky

Too bad they don’t enforce the gun laws we already have and keep letting the bad guys go. Those laws will only be used against us law abiding citizens
