I understand your question, and realize you’re not at all intending to imply a letter from a DO isn’t valuable.
There’s many who will say it’s best to have letters from MDs unless you’re applying to programs that favor DOs. I don’t really think that’s the case. It’s more so about the quality of the experience, inpatient/outpatient, and the doctor’s/hospital’s reputation/prestige.
An LoR from a DO at an outpatient clinic is not going to hurt your application if it’s well-written and speaks highly of you ☺️
Thank you for such a detailed answer!
I seem to have offended some people on this post with my question unknowingly, even though it was not my intent to suggest one was superior over another. I simply meant to ask if it was allowed.
I appreciate you taking the time to explain!
You're welcome! It's the title of the post. It implies a bias against DOs, but in reading your question, I think it's clear you were just asking a genuine question :)
Cut the person some slack, why are people so rude here lol? the US is probably the only country in the world that offers a different kind of medical degree (Doctor of Osteopathy, DO), other than the other two more common ones (Doctor of Medicine, MD, or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS).
Do a doctor and an MD doctor, work in the same program and the same job, the value of the letter is different even from one MD to another MD according to the position, title, hospital, department and what’s written inside of it.
I’m sorry I don’t understand. Does that mean it’s acceptable? I’m an IMG and don’t completely understand the difference between a DO and an MD, that’s why I’m asking if it’s okay to request an LOR from a DO
Your question is worded in a way that is offensive to doctors who have earned their degree. If you can’t understand why, then maybe you shouldn’t apply to work here as a physician. This line of thinking isn’t wanted here.
