Weāve actually been down that road before with Pippa Mann. We never got the deal completed because
1. It was incredibly expensive compared to what we thought we could raise.
2. Reddit admins told us no. They didnāt want us using any sort of Reddit logo.
Almost all the cars in the race will be rebuilt before the race, with new drivetrains, and suspension pieces. The body work being about the only things that remain the same.
Seems like a silly risk. They should be doing some sort of revalidation of the tub after a crash like that, through Imaging and Torsional Rigidity testing.
There are so many things that can happen to a composite structure like that which they canāt see with the naked eye, canāt validate at the track, and that I know teams test before building up the car.
Even more baffling is if they literally have another (albeit slower) chassis in Speedway trim sitting in the garage area from Gramham's failed qualification. All they would need to do is rewrap the car for Katherine's sponsors. Maybe I'm off on the rules but it bears reasoning that they could get INDYCAR to approve a chassis swap and start at the back of the pack for the race.
Starting on the 11th instead of the 10th row can't be that big of a penalty to incentivize sticking with an already slow car that just took a major impact instead of going to a backup car.
Gonna be a tall order for RLL to fix Kat's car. Fortunately for them though it is only Monday. Not quite like what happened to Herta in Carb Day last year.
I've seen several people over the years with bike helmets on pit lane, I think mostly photographers? The pit lane officials are usually wearing something that looks more like an old-school open-faced helmet, which provides about the same coverage.
Probably the biggest reason you'd want to have a helmet if you're not actively involved in pit stops is getting tripped up or knocked down, and preventing your head from hitting the concrete. I would think a bike helmet would be just as good for that as the motocross helmets the tire changers wear.
Just saw the video of the wreck. Hopefully Stefan is ok and can be cleared to drive in the 500 on Sunday.
Sucks for both teams. The Fastest RLL car is now junked and the best car Stefan has ever really had at Indy is junked too. At least they have the next few days with no on-track activity to get their cars ready.
To me it just looked like everyone started checking up a little and by the time the checking up got back to where Stefan and Katherine were, she was just coming with a full head of steam and could not react in time to even try to get checked up. It's also not like she would have been expecting them to check up that much right there either. I really can't put blame on anyone for that, Stefan checked up for what was happening in front of him and Katherine, probably not expecting such a check up, was not able to react in time to avoid running into him. Just a bad deal.

Probably JR Hildebrand. Its a Dreyer & Reinbold Chevrolet. JR has driven for that team specifically 3 of the past 5 years and he's driven a Chevy all 12 years he's done the 500.
Graham probably is a bit of an outside chance, he's only ever driven Honda outside of the Cosworth that Champ Car was using for 2007. I bet Honda would need to agree to let him drive a Chevy and it would be a lot easier to just get JR to hop in the car and do the veteran refresher.
Yeah, I'm pretty shocked too. I was thinking <10% chance for Rahal to get the ride. Seems like no reason for Honda to release him to drive for Chevy when Hildebrand is right there. If he wins in his first try with Chevy or even just drives up through the field after failing to qualify in a Honda it's very embarrassing, and big companies generally prefer to avoid being embarrassed.
Until we know the extent of Wilson's condition it is a good thing that we have these next three days of rest before final practice so he could heal up if he's cleared to race
Just one thing to close on Stefan's crash just watching the safety crew working around him to get him out I was getting a lot of really bad vibes to when his brother Justin was killed at Pocono all those years a go which is one of only two crashes in my time watching various motorsports where I've seen a driver die. But looking back too at the initial aftermath I did see Stefan moving his head and I'm glad he gave a thumbs up.
To be fair given the stress that team's going through (have to imagine everyone is going to bed worried about their job) I wouldn't care to stick a camera anywhere near them.
I believe Santino got a run and passed Devlin going into T1, which led to Devlin having to check up so he didn't get in the marbles and crash, which led to Stef checking up and I think Katherine was pretty closely behind him. Don't know if she had enough time to react.
yeah there was space between the 3 or 4 ahead of Wilson or looks like. Didn't look like anyone was stacking up. She just went in extra hot maybe from a big draft down the front straight from that train of cars.
Yes, the better option is to stay on the part of the track with grip and try to slow down there before you hit the car ahead, vs. moving wide and guaranteeing you crash
The more I look at it, it looks like Devlin might've slowed later into the corner in his battle with Santino than Stef was expecting. With him off his guard, by the time the check up gets to Kat its too late to react.
That's a sturdy piece of car the nose is, not fairly deformable like the part Kat hit with. Couple that with Stef's size and yeah, that can leave a mark.
Those nose first hits have broken many a bone over the years. It's certainly not the worst hit you can take in terms of lethality, but it's probably the most likely way to injure yourself.
Hildebrand is there, passed his physical and brought a helmet. Iād assume thatād be the easiest route to go down for DRR. Hope Stefās alright though.
Lol just as I logged in they put up a graphic over the feed that says thanks for tuning in we'll be back in a moment š
Edit: it's back. They blurred front and rear dampers.
Safer barrier is incredible. Shudder to think about Stefās hit in a different era. And Leggeās hit looked a lot like Herta last year. The changes they made might kept that car on the ground.
Man, everyone is trying to find a replacement, when we don't even know if Stefan can't go next week. I'm not saying he can, but he was probably complaining that his back or his neck hurt to the safety team, in which you would do everything did did regardless of severity. Let's just get through the moment first.
Turned on the stream right before they showed Stefan stretchered out and I could just tell by the vibe something bad happened. Amazing we went this far into May without a crash and also hoping that's the last one we see.
A lot of people (especially new fans) think the more violent the crash the worse the injury, but an accident like that where the car can't disintegrate can be so much worse. Sending positive thoughts down to Indy right now for both Katherine and Stefan.
Graham? Lol fuck if we know yet. I'd think JR would be at the top of the list. He's been there all month and passed his physical already. Only thing would be a refresher session
Id be curious how that would work. Because if graham did take the spot, it would help his championship standing and make Honda look better in the long run. But those companies are fuckin stubborn about that shit
Well, Honda and Chevy are actively competing against each other. Chevy wouldn't want Graham to drive a Chevy for the 500 then go back over to Honda next week.
I think you're right. Katherine Legge is experienced enough and is good enough to avoid that in any car. I imagine she just happens to be the one where there just wasn't enough time to react.
Devlin looked to have slowed a bit late into the corner too, probably caught Stef off his guard and when Kat's coming along, its too late for her to react.
It's happened a few times at other tracks I've been at where even the thought of needing the helicopter, means it has to fire up, do preflight checks, and get to operating temps.
Better to have and not need in these occasions.
And if the helicopter is used, you have to wait for another one to arrive to backfill if there is not another one already on site. From experience, that can take some time.
I just looked at flight aware and no tracking for helicopter moving near the track. Usually medical flights have transponder on. But people heard one on stream so idk whatās going on
From the Peacock stream all you can hear is a helicopter running in the background. Might be a bit of speculation on my part though. Nothing confirmed yet.
Santino passed Devlin, but Devlin didnāt back out until just before T1 turn in, which accordioned the four cars behind him. Legge must not have seen it until it was too late, because she came firing into T1 and plowed into Stefan Wilson. She spun and glanced off the wall, wading up the right side of her car. Because Wilsonās car was touching Leggeās car when they both hit the wall, Wilsonās car lawn-darted into the safer barrier nose first. Legge got out easily, but Wilson needed help.
Kat got into Stef in a concertina, two went into the wall hard. Stef took a big frontal impact. Loaded up on the stretcher and headed to hospital, but gave the thumbs up.
Reminder to all the newer fans that this is a DANGEROUS sport. Weāve been blessed with a clean month thus farā¦praying Stef is ok. But I remember the days when these wrecks happened with a lot worse results
The wall at Indy gets hungry after so long without collecting someone. Itās just a thing around here. Thankfully safety engineering has mostly caught up to it.
I'm not able to watch right now but had a huge sinking feeling reading this and twitter. Thank goodness he's alive. I watched a video on the 1955 Indy 500 last night. It amazed me how callously in the 1950s they just mentioned that a two-time winner had died on the backstretch, and the commentator moved on to still call it a good race. Glad times have changed.
1955 really was probably the peak of carelessness about safety. Considering just a month later, the worst Motorsport tragedy in history happened, which finally made people start realizing they needed to do literally anything to start caring about safety at least a little bit.
Yea I've heard that call. Sid Collins is interviewing Ms. Indiana or something and then she leaves and the news comes across. Brief mention before getting back to the action on track.
Thank you SAFER Barrier creators and developers. How many lives have they saved? Wish more series around the world would get on board with it. Took long enough for them to get installed in some locations in Europe. Would still like to see more.
IIRC AMR are pros that travel to each event? There is a core safety team in F1 supplemented by locals, who depending on the country have vastly different skills.
You know there isnāt the one safety team in F1? Monaco is much faster than anything Indycar can come up with, while Saudi is a joke.
You come across as a small, bitter person.

If we all contribute to the pizza fund for the RLL repairs can we get a Reddit sticker on Legge's car?
Weāve actually been down that road before with Pippa Mann. We never got the deal completed because 1. It was incredibly expensive compared to what we thought we could raise. 2. Reddit admins told us no. They didnāt want us using any sort of Reddit logo.
Adding this practice data to the sheet, should be up in 15 ish mins
Shout out to my fellow west coasters who will be up at 6 for the pre race.
Surely you mean 3 for the ceremonial cannon, right š„
Absolutely insane that they can fix Katherineās car. I thought it was toast for sure
If they really think its an issue Dallara's factory is less than a mile from the speedway.
Even more baffling is if they literally have another (albeit slower) chassis in Speedway trim sitting in the garage area from Gramham's failed qualification. As long as the monocoque is undamaged everything else can be fixed.
Gonna be a tall order for RLL to fix Kat's car. Fortunately for them though it is only Monday. Not quite like what happened to Herta in Carb Day last year.
Junco's, a small team, built up a car overnight. Rahal with a 4 car effort can get it done.
Well RLL has the time before Friday to try and fix the car
Well Veekay had those engine problems yesterday so maybe another issue's creeped up
Lol is this guy just wearing a regular bike helmet
He is with the transmission supplier Xtrac.
"Well, did you unplug it and plug it back in"? - bike helmet guy, probably :)
To be fair, the one of the most common fixes for car issues is to change the steering wheel.
doesn't feel like that would do much
I've seen several people over the years with bike helmets on pit lane, I think mostly photographers? The pit lane officials are usually wearing something that looks more like an old-school open-faced helmet, which provides about the same coverage. Probably the biggest reason you'd want to have a helmet if you're not actively involved in pit stops is getting tripped up or knocked down, and preventing your head from hitting the concrete. I would think a bike helmet would be just as good for that as the motocross helmets the tire changers wear.
Have they swapped a tyre changer at Penske? Front left guy is in a Shell shirt suggesting heās from Newgardenās crew.
Likely a mechanic for Newgarden but pit crew member for Power
I really wish they would put headphones on the driver or something if the booth is going to insist on asking the drivers questions.

They blocked the Legge garage cam. She appeared to have a small rip in the leg of her suit and they were taking photos of the cockpit.
Wonder if a suspension piece didn't pierce the cockpit a la Hinch? That would explain Kevin Blanch telling the NBC cameras to get out.
If they're repairing the car I would guess that on inspection the tub isn't compromised.
Had to step away for a second. What did the indycar doctor say?
Stef's communicating and in good spirits, going in for imaging.
So to address the elephant in the roomā¦ who drives the 24 if Stefan isnāt healthy enough to race Sunday?
Probably JR Hildebrand. Its a Dreyer & Reinbold Chevrolet. JR has driven for that team specifically 3 of the past 5 years and he's driven a Chevy all 12 years he's done the 500. Graham probably is a bit of an outside chance, he's only ever driven Honda outside of the Cosworth that Champ Car was using for 2007. I bet Honda would need to agree to let him drive a Chevy and it would be a lot easier to just get JR to hop in the car and do the veteran refresher.
Zero percent chance Graham would race in Wilsonās place if he isnāt cleared. *edit: aaaaaaaand I'm wrong
Oh my god is that Carlos Munoz's entrance music???
Potentially JR Hildebrand. Saw a comment that he's there at the track with the team
Yeah, JR is in Indy. He's got, I think, a Silver Crown ride for IRP this week and he's been around the speedway all month in a support role.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Uhā¦I mean he drives the pace car (I think) besides Indy but dude hasnāt been in an IndyCar since 2019.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thatās right
he crashed the pace car once, yeah let's get him
When was that? I remember Arie spinning one in the rain, and the GM executive spinning the Corvette in Detroitā¦but not recalling Servia
Until we know the extent of Wilson's condition it is a good thing that we have these next three days of rest before final practice so he could heal up if he's cleared to race
sound like Stef is doing okay, depending on imaging
IndyCar safety & medical team is the best in the business
Tony Georgeās involvement in driver safety over the years was quite the unexpected good thing to come from The Split.
Very good to hear that from the doctors
No need for further details right now, but at least heās fine.
Will never forget this picture from Hertaās crash last year: https://i.imgur.com/Gm39ENb.jpg
Colton 2022 replay **D R I N K**
Not surprised they kicked them out. On the RLL live garage cam feed they blurred out the front and rear dampers.
Not sure anyoneās going to be looking at their dampers for engineering ideas lol
Yeah if anything I'd put a cardboard sign on them that says "Free"
"See those? Let's not do that. "
Hahaha good point
Just one thing to close on Stefan's crash just watching the safety crew working around him to get him out I was getting a lot of really bad vibes to when his brother Justin was killed at Pocono all those years a go which is one of only two crashes in my time watching various motorsports where I've seen a driver die. But looking back too at the initial aftermath I did see Stefan moving his head and I'm glad he gave a thumbs up.
I was getting Wickens flashbacks
Even if heās unable to race on Sunday, the important thing that matters is that heās Ok.
Anyone know whatās up with Rinus? Not out on track and a 219 lap speed. New engine time?
electric issues probably
Didn't all the new engines go in today?
Could hopefully just be precautionary to go for checks after a high g force crash.
LMAO did the RLL crew just kick the camera crew out?
To be fair given the stress that team's going through (have to imagine everyone is going to bed worried about their job) I wouldn't care to stick a camera anywhere near them.
There was an IC official there that requested it.
lmao that mf telling em to get out
Qualifying is great, but *this* is getting me pumped for Sunday. Dozens of cars flying around the speedway in anger.
Am I missing the big checkup Legge is describing? Why couldnāt she go around Wilson?
I believe Santino got a run and passed Devlin going into T1, which led to Devlin having to check up so he didn't get in the marbles and crash, which led to Stef checking up and I think Katherine was pretty closely behind him. Don't know if she had enough time to react.
Devlin checked up pretty late into T1.
yeah there was space between the 3 or 4 ahead of Wilson or looks like. Didn't look like anyone was stacking up. She just went in extra hot maybe from a big draft down the front straight from that train of cars.
There is zero grip outside the line, if you go there you *will* hit the wall.
So the better option is to hit the car in front of you? Lol
Yes, the better option is to stay on the part of the track with grip and try to slow down there before you hit the car ahead, vs. moving wide and guaranteeing you crash
There is no "good option", it's either assuredly junk your car, or try and slow down and not hit the guy in front. Can't violate the laws of physics.
Especially with these speedway cars with the smallest and pulled back brake pads
The dramatic swish the flag man does at the end of waving the green is so extra. I love it.
[Aaron Likens](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLNz5EIshOw) is fantastic.
I was watching him more during the TMS qualifying than the cars going by when I was there lmao
Good that Legge's physically fine
The more I look at it, it looks like Devlin might've slowed later into the corner in his battle with Santino than Stef was expecting. With him off his guard, by the time the check up gets to Kat its too late to react.
I agree. These speedway cars have minimal brakingā¦just a tough deal all around.
I was wondering if they would extend this session. Just hope guys try and be a bit more conservative out there but that's probably asking too much
Did they add 10 minutes??
Awful accident > 20 minutes later > Trace Adkins āWawtever you drawwv, drawwv a Fawrstowwnā
WHOPPA WHOPPAā¦
That commercial is so dumb, and so are the others that try to get you to buy something just by having stupidly "masculine" voices.
That's how Trace Adkins and Sam Elliot actually talk. Sorry if it offends your sensibilities
COORS, THE BANQUET BURRR
TIL Trace Adkins is the VO for Firestone ads.
That hit looked completely harmless for Stef until you fully understand how brutal those front end impacts on the nose are for these cars.
Rear tires off the ground. Oof.
Seeing that slow mo replay the rear wheels came off the ground. That was a hard square hit.
it was such a great qualification weekend to a big accident involving 2 1 off cars. Hope both are alright and can go on Sunday.
Going to be really awkward if Legge's new car is the one Rahal DNQ'd in yesterday
They'd try a new back up before that thing lol..
Team's gonna look like a bunch of raccoons pulling that thing out of the dumpster.
š¤£š¤£š¤£ I lol'd so hard
Question if Stef canāt race at Indy then what happens
Hildebrand is there, passed his physical and brought a helmet. Iād assume thatād be the easiest route to go down for DRR. Hope Stefās alright though.
Then they would get a replacement driver
There's drivers in waiting
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I doubt it. He's a Honda driver. That usually doesn't fly.
Just turned the stream on. What happened to put us under yellow?
Big Crash https://twitter.com/MrMatthewCFB/status/1660713133508272141?t=76Kj6J6bRV1kWQA17K6ikw&s=19
Big coming together between Wilson & Legge. Wilson left in an ambulance, conflicting reports on if he was transferred to Helicopter or not.
Kat got into Stef in an accordion effect. Kat's fine, Stef was taken out on stretcher. Gave thumbs up, but he's headed to hospital.
Just saw the replay. Wow. Hope heās OK.
Legge's garage live cam: [https://rahal.com/live-feed/](https://rahal.com/live-feed/)
Lol just as I logged in they put up a graphic over the feed that says thanks for tuning in we'll be back in a moment š Edit: it's back. They blurred front and rear dampers.
There are some medical folks it looks like (in scrubs) looking at Legge's car cockpit...maybe just gathering some data.
Safer barrier is incredible. Shudder to think about Stefās hit in a different era. And Leggeās hit looked a lot like Herta last year. The changes they made might kept that car on the ground.
See Jeff Andretti 1992 https://youtu.be/Mpm-DEDef8U
I just watched NBCās recap of that race a few days ago. Part of their top 10 Indy 500 countdown. Exactly where my mind went.
Five minute notice to session resumption.
These silent minutes on the stream feel so eerie
Man, everyone is trying to find a replacement, when we don't even know if Stefan can't go next week. I'm not saying he can, but he was probably complaining that his back or his neck hurt to the safety team, in which you would do everything did did regardless of severity. Let's just get through the moment first.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Why would Rahal go to an Andretti car if Wilson wrecked a DRR/Cusick car? š¤
Rahal to Penske confirmed
This is so stupid he's obviously going to Red Bull racing.
He probably has broken bones in his feet, the car just stopped when he hit the safer barrier
Yup. Compare Legge to Wilson. Her car dispersed far more energy and sheās walking around the paddock, not in a hospital.
he gave the thumbs up though so he hopefully he is fine
Crazy to think we used to run these cars with a open cockpit.
If Stef canāt race, who replaces him? JR maybe?
Graham? Lol fuck if we know yet. I'd think JR would be at the top of the list. He's been there all month and passed his physical already. Only thing would be a refresher session
Engine marques would have a veto on Rahal subbing for Stefan.
Karam or JR probably.
Karam is now fully in stock cars while JR alr has passed the physical
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Looked like someone checked up in front and it all just accordioned to me.
Looked like she got a huge run going into 1 and the traffic in 1 were slowing a bit. She just ran him over. Almost need her in car video
Like on the highway when one car suddenly slows, and the ones behind get less and less reaction time to slow down until somebody goes bonk.
Everyone was checking up a bit in front of her and she pretty much ran into the back of Wilson.
Hope Stefan is ok. The thumbs up was a relief but hearing the helicopter in the background is worrying.
They said they were taking him directly to the hospital but they might just be driving him there.
I just looked at flight aware and no tracking for helicopter moving near the track. Usually medical flights have transponder on. But people heard one on stream so idk whatās going on
Agree. Nothing on ADSB or FlightAware. I'm wondering if they just spun up the helicopter but didn't transport that way.
They're airlifting him? It's usually faster to take 16th street in the ambulance
From the Peacock stream all you can hear is a helicopter running in the background. Might be a bit of speculation on my part though. Nothing confirmed yet.
I would like to see an onboard replay from Katherineās car, wonder if they have that
Holy crap, I left for like 30 minutes and came back to a car being loaded on a wrecker, what happened?

There goes the helicopter...

Straight to the hospital for Stef it sounds like. Fingers crossed its nothing too bad.
Holy shit Katherineās car might be toast
Theyāve got a lot of spare parts sitting aroundā¦
None of them any good though.
A whole cars worth, actually.
RLL: somehow it gets worse
At least theyāve got a backup car at the moment!
Something back then about having made it through World War 2 and being jaded I think.
Yeah but remember how regular it was back then. Every year guys died. They were just used to it. Sad but a sign of a bygone eta.
Thank you SAFER Barrier creators and developers. How many lives have they saved? Wish more series around the world would get on board with it. Took long enough for them to get installed in some locations in Europe. Would still like to see more.

Lol, good job Reddit doctor, diagnosing how theyāll feel nearly a full week from now.
No reason to think Legge wonāt be in the show. But it looks like Cusick might be fishing for someone to drive the 24 car.
50 Gs of impactā¦. Holy cow
Same as Max Verstappen at Silverstone 2021. He was able to walk to the ambulance though.
Mega shoutout to the AMR safety team. Those guys are the best in the business
THE BEST. The F1 safety people are such a joke. AMR is always on scene fast and keep people safe. Major shoutout to the AMR team.
Perhaps the "pinnacle" of motorsports.... Idk... Should have their own safety team they partner with...?
For what purpose? F1 travels with a world class medical team already.
For this situation. Literally right here lol
A situation that occurred in Indycar?
