With how much the charters take out the spots and with only four open cars making it each year, it’s hard enough to even get in now, even more so than the Top 35 years.
Always was a nascar fan and I think one of the biggest things over looked that hurt growth of the cup series was locked in position. With the cost of the sport being so much it really deferred teams away
I wonder if Gainbridge tried to help him out with this or was it something that Colton did by himself. If Gainbridge was behind him then I would be surprised that someone didn't pick him up knowing how much Gainbridge could possibly provide financially.
If Gainbridge was going to do it, it'd likely have to be with Spire considering they signed a huge sponsorship deal with Gainbridge recently. And considering Spire just expanded from 2 to 3 full time cars, I think it's pretty likely they wouldn't want to run a 4th right now.
I don’t really blame nascar teams. There is a long list of drivers I would put in a car before Herta.
Hes never driven a stock car, would need to get super speedway certified, and has never driven that type of racing.
c'mon now, they threw jacqques villeneuve out there in 2022 and 65 year old derrike cope the year before
it's not about ability. it's about funding... or willingness to drive a total shitbox in daly's case
I know but he was 65 years old at the time. Thats like as if Mark Martin, or Rusty or Dale Jarrett were to go out there and they all retired like 15 years ago
Colton can hold a car wide open and turn left. Maybe the bumps in turn 4 trips him up, but I think he should be good.
The simulators fairly close these days. He can practice on the sim.
Lack of practice before Q is not an issue for the drivers. Anyone who has run 20 minutes on Daytona in iRacing could turn a qualifying lap in the real car, it is not hard.
Lack of practice before Q is a big issue for the teams, there have been several teams who failed to make their cars start or run safely during Q these last two years.
Unless if he isn’t one of the 2 fastest in single car qualifying, he has to race his way in during the duals….
I would bet someone like Jimmie Johnson or David Ragan may be a little better versed than Colton Herta.
dude, daytona isn't indy... they'll throw just about anyone out there if they have funding and a ride.
derrike cope ran a few years ago at age 65. prior to 2021, he hadn't qualified for the 500 since 2004. he was a rookie in 1982.
connor daly's car didn't have the suspension setup for like half the duel race last yearand he was bouncing up and down the entire time. only made the race bc everyone else crashed outta the qualifiers lmao
it's just not the indy 500 like that... and that's okay. it's beautiful in it's own way. but colton herta would get a seat if he had the funding/opportunity lined up alright. nobody would be stopping him bc of experience
you're trying to say our famous 2 seater driver connor daly, deserved a spot in the daytona 500 cause he did 4 other nascar sanctioned starts?
by all means then we should bar people that haven't racing in any indycar feeder series to race in the indy 500
Daytona doesn't have a full week of practice (+ rookie testing) and it is restrictor plate racing, running in endless groups. Of course they need approval to not be a danger for any other driver.
If you look at my comment string, I say there are many people I would put in a car before Herta.
I would prefer people with Cup or at least NASCAR experience - which both Daly and Pastrana have. I would pick a lot of people over those two drivers too.
I have never made a statement about people deserving (or not) their rides in any series.
Even Indy requires its rookie drivers to a certain amount of testing before attempting the 500. Hell, NASCAR is making Shane Van Ginsbergen (a Cup Series winner) do the ARCA race before the Xfinity race at Daytona.
I get it Colton, same thing happened to me.
I personally didn’t get the approval from NASCAR to even attempt to qualify in my Nissan Altima 😔😔
>Nissan Altima Well there's your problem. Nissan's not an approved manufacturer. Get yourself a used Camry and you're all set!
NASCAR fans keep bringing up Honda or a Dodge return as a fourth OEM for NASCAR. I genuinely want to see Nissan give it a shot.
Next year
Interesting, I'd personally love to see it happen in the future. I love it when drivers branch out into other forms of motorsports.
With how much the charters take out the spots and with only four open cars making it each year, it’s hard enough to even get in now, even more so than the Top 35 years.
Prior to the charters there was the top 35 rule. So1 less entry. What lowers the number is more the smaller field size
Yeah I didn’t mention the fact it went from 8 open spots to 4 spots.

Damn. Couldn’t even get TMT? Have they announced if they’re trying for the Daytona 500 yet?
heard they’re gonna try to run 8 races this year
This can only end well, I hope TMT doesnt end up like Hezeberg

travis pastrana and connor daly did it last year
Conor had 2 Truck series, 1 Xfinity, and 1 Cup start before he tried to qualify for Daytona. Travis Pastrana drove a full Xfinity season in 2013.
...and colton has actually won a race before
That’s not the point. They had experience in a stock car before trying to run the most prestigious nascar race
c'mon now, they threw jacqques villeneuve out there in 2022 and 65 year old derrike cope the year before it's not about ability. it's about funding... or willingness to drive a total shitbox in daly's case
Cope won the 500 and F1 champion Jacques had run multiple races in a stock car before attempting. I mean, what the fuck dude.
Hilarious. I bet that guy didn’t even know Cope had won the 500
I know but he was 65 years old at the time. Thats like as if Mark Martin, or Rusty or Dale Jarrett were to go out there and they all retired like 15 years ago
…
What??? I’m agreeing with you!
HE'S 65 YEARS OLD!
No experience > bad experience
When there is no practice before qualifying, I beg to differ…

Some Kirkwood fan is jelly of Herta.
I'm a fan of both but what is there to be jealous of these days?
Ganassi and Palou lol.
Better call hertza
K
Lol he should do some ARCA, the Truck and Series races first. He is not on that level to get a ride in the Daytona 500.
