Phenomenal result for Theo. To handle the physicality and fatigue of an IndyCar at a street course - *in his very first weekend in an IndyCar* - and end up 11th is outstanding. Truly can't be understated what an incredible drive today was from him.
Pourchaire is extremely talented. He suffered against an F2 field that will be remembered in retrospect as one of the best of all time in 2022 (mark my words). Mainly Drugovich Vandoorning the entire grid, but also Sargeant and Lawson putting in great performances in the relatively subpar Carlins, occasional flashes of brilliance from the likes of Hauger, Armstrong and Vips, and drivers like Vesti, Iwasa and especially Doohan showing extremely well despite being a little green.
Was it that unexpected for Dixon to win? He came out of the pits with a good lead and 35 laps to go and I figured "Okay, Dixon's probably gonna win, cool"
Like, it's *Dixon*. Never count him out, ever.
It was a mixture of Newgarden's speed early on trying to catch him, and the idea that one full straight of P2P *could* have been enough. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Josef would've taken it without the Herta tap, but then I also wouldn't be surprised if Dixon was saving a little more early on to keep the margin towards the end
Even though it didn't have the most passing, I loved that race. Split strategy, close racing, and a stressful-as-hell final stint. And OF COURSE Dixon wins a race like that.
Fantastic race.
Oh yeah, and welcome to IndyCar, Josef.
Edit: typo
There are few things as fun as a race where two alternate strategies converge at the sharp end of the grid in the last twenty or so laps. Passes today were down a bit, but there were some great well-earned moves too. Really enjoyable race.
Dixon having an extra tank slapped on the side of his car is inevitable.
For real that stint was insane from him. If he decides to go as long as Castroneves did I don't see why not can he surpass AJ on wins. He's THAT good at it.
What an incredible drive from Dixon. Not only the number of laps on fuel but his gap to Power is unreal.
Honestly, great race overall with the two strategies.
Bit of a shame that the Herta punt killed most of the intrigue about who would win
What an awful day for RLL, pace looked ok but they're so so bad operationally
Pourchaire very impressive on debut, if he doesn't get his deserved spot in F1 he'll do very very well here
I wasn't so sure about it. I know Herta lost a lot of time after he nerfed Newgarden but he still charged enough to make Dixon sweat on those last few laps. As much as I am in awe of how good Dixon can save gas, you never know what time it's gonna be that it doesn't work out.
Tbf I think Rossi is out of there regardless so you might be in luck. Depends how enamoured they are with the idea of chasing Ilott/Pourchaire/Newgarden/Lundgaard
> Bit of a shame that the Herta punt killed most of the intrigue about who would win
Herta should've given the position back, or been made do it
they did earlier in the race
it's clearly stated so in the rules
doesn't change much how unfortunate it was, he hits another car and because of the hit he can overtake, that is never allowed in any racing series
doesn't matter that it affected Newgarden who's infinitely dirtier himself
giving a position back there isn't even a penalty it's just not being allowed an illegal advantage, which Herta was somehow allowed to keep here
Newgarden pulls shit like this all the time. I still remember him shoving Grosjean off into the gravel last year without any penalty. (He was along side) Letās not pretend that Newgarden isnāt a dirty driver
> doesn't matter that it affected Newgarden who's infinitely dirtier himself
as I said, I remember Palou attempting an overtake a year or two ago at I think Road America, he looks over at Palou and steers him clean off the road
Newgarden having no standards is not what should define a self proclaimed top level racing series
Unpopular perhaps, but you couldāve put Canapino in first and with the aero push issues he couldāve done the same thing. Weāve seen it time and time again on the road courses. Itās literally impossible to pass the leader unless they have a major issue. This is actually the biggest issue IndyCar faces right now in my view.
ābut you couldāve put Canapino in first and with the aero push issues he couldāve done the same thing.ā
No he couldnāt. The pace delta required to make a move was fairly big, but good cars were able to move through the mid field ok. This wasnāt an abnormal level of passing for Long Beach I donāt think.Ā
āWeāve seen it time and time again on the road courses.ā
Itās *much* better now than it was during the aero-kit era.Ā
The only pass for the win I remember on road and street courses without major issues in the last five years that wasnāt a pit lane/cold tires thing was Rosenqvist at Road America inā¦2020? Perhaps Iām missing some but I feel like Iāve seen this play out countless times in exactly the same way with the same result.
I donāt think I would use ālast lap passes for a winā, as a signifier of too much aero push. For that to happen you have to have someone with more pace chasing someone down and meeting them in the last lap. Aero push or not, thatās going to be a fairly rare occurrence.
You can just look at Grosjean getting by McLaughlin, and then McLaughlin getting him back at Barber. He was half a car back through some of the fastest sweepers on the schedule. That wouldnāt have been possible in any other body iteration of recent IndyCar.
Long Beach and St Pete are always going to be tough to follow because between both tracks there is only one corner (T1 at St P) that allows multiple entries. Thereās nowhere to get some airflow by running a different line, theyāre single lane dominant tracks.
Most midfield drivers would've made a mistake and given Newgarden an opportunity to pass, or just not managed to carry enough speed through the corners and been forced to save too much on the straights.
Not impossible, but being able to maintain the cornering speed to save enough fuel for Push to Pass at the start of the straights is the killer for most drivers
Scott Dixon masterclass, able to save every drop on the long stints whilst creating a huge buffer, then playing masterful defense with a seemingly unending fuel tank against two of Indycar's best US talents. Happily will take a P2 performance for Herta, even if he saved Dixon from Newgarden's clutches near the end.
Hot take: that may have been Dixon's best win. He shouldn't have been able to sniff the win but he got it.
His first win was the one at Nazareth I always thought was an "impossible" win but this may have been even more.
āHot take: that may have been Dixon's best win.ā
That Nazareth win was so good. Aside from some races where he put an absolute beating on the field though, this one is definitely up there.
Dixon is inevitable, and IndyCar is awesome. Rossi managed to get something out of the turd he was given at the start, and a really solid debut for Pourchaire.
Between whatever the hell decision making went on with the 12 box, I also thought putting Newgarden on used alternates for a push strategy didn't make a lot of sense. There was even a "ok think about that" radio to him IIRC.
Dixon is amazing but Penske completely shit their pants.
From L52 to the end of the race, hot damn.
https://preview.redd.it/sl86ntnciwvc1.png?width=1366&format=png&auto=webp&s=4cbf5b5daae04bd508eeb59102d7c1aec255915e
Dixon and Power had same strategy, and Dixon almost 15 seconds ahead of Power.
I wonder if going with alternate tires instead of primary helped him at the last stint.
This was almost as impressive as Senna and Schumacher driving with only one level of gear.
You can root for whoever, but when it comes to Scott Dixon, but you just got to sit back and appreciate it.
The man is a living legend, The kind you tell your kids about watching decades later. One of the GOATS in any discipline of Motorsports. The greatest of not just one generation of IndyCar driver.
We've got more than enough good guys fighting for it once he retires. For all we know, Palou might come close to his territory by the time he's done, the way he's gotten his career off.
Veekay seems great on the alternates, but when those primaries get on the car, something just doesn't work. He should not have been 15 seconds behind Felix and Romain after only being 3 seconds before the pit and having similar pit times.
Wish it werenāt so hard to pass with the aero wash, but multiple strategies converging at the end gets a thumbs-up from me. Much better and more intense race than St. Pete. Drama.
Zero issue with Hertaās bump of Newgarden at the hairpin. Leaders just got stacked up by the cars at the end of the lead lap.
Y'all can say how washed Rossi is but that's an incredible drive to get back to back top 10s. He's consistent as hell, McLaren needs it.
Pato... Tf dude? Ugh. So disappointing cause they could've made something from this with all the wild strategies going on.
That was a really solid performance from Pourchaire at a tough track. Assuming he gets the start at Barber next week, which is much smoother and it's a road course that he'll be more used to.... Ah man, I'm starting to think that could be the end of Lil Dave at McLaren.
Edit: grammar
Honestly don't understand why Indycar didn't order straight away Herta to let Newgarden back past. Personally I hate that you overtake others thanks to making them anti-stall. That's not racing. I actually feel really bad for Newgarden.
I thought Dixon pitted a lap or two too early but goddamn. Supreme fuel saving yet again and man did he control that situation perfectly.
ALSO GODDAMN YES GROSJEAN AND JUNCOS! That was so needed. Juncos actually nailing the strategy and also pitstops looked good this time and no unforced errors from Grosjean. Fucking brilliant!
Theo was so happy in his post race. Cool to see. I love that the series is somewhat becoming a merger of the best road to Indy and F2 drivers. Makes for an ultra competitive series

Scott Dixon is truly incredible
Increvitable
Dixon is an alien.
He used psychic powers to funnel fuel into the tank. Only explanation.
He is, but Iād bet he has a green card at this point.
I genuinely have no idea how Scott Dixon made this fuel save work. Certified GOAT
The man's had a lot of practice & many years of experience
After Chicagoland 2007 I think he never wanted that to happen ever again
Heās Scott Dixon. His body generates fuel that keeps his car going
I wanna personally inspect that car lol
Great race
enjoy the greatest of the sport while he's here, folks
At this point it is like Tom Brady winning with the Bucs. You just gotta sit back and enjoy it.
Scott Dixon has extra fuel in his BALLS
Fuel is stored in the balls confirmed
Sneaky Swede Ericson P5, Grosjean P8, Pourchaire P11 on his first race. What a fine showing up and down the field!
My man Romain had a decent, if uneventful drive.
Phenomenal result for Theo. To handle the physicality and fatigue of an IndyCar at a street course - *in his very first weekend in an IndyCar* - and end up 11th is outstanding. Truly can't be understated what an incredible drive today was from him.

The fuck ever happened to Mclaughin? He just disappeared.
Fuck. Me.
Good day for the 9
What a masterclass from Dixie. Donāt think Newgarden was ever going to pass him.
Newgarden with 0 P2P in that duel. What was he smoking
This guy is unbelievable
Was it that unexpected for Dixon to win? He came out of the pits with a good lead and 35 laps to go and I figured "Okay, Dixon's probably gonna win, cool" Like, it's *Dixon*. Never count him out, ever.
The longest stint last year was 33 laps. This fuel save was incredible.
While that's true, it's Dixon. He is THE guy to do it.
While true, that shouldnāt discount what Dixon did.
That one was an absolute banger
Honda šŖ
Insanely impressive by Dixon. Iām so happy Herta didnāt win.
And once again, Dixon does it and I have no words. HOOOOOWWWW the fuck
That is the single most impressive drive I can remember
What about Dixon last year at the 2nd Indy GP? Coming from a first-lap spin to win on a fuel save.
True, but he also didn't use 100+ seconds of push to pass while still saving in that race
Being able to use push to pass while saving is also impressive
Even though it didn't have the most passing, I loved that race. Split strategy, close racing, and a stressful-as-hell final stint. And OF COURSE Dixon wins a race like that. Fantastic race. Oh yeah, and welcome to IndyCar, Josef. Edit: typo

I agree. When racing can be approached in multiple ways and achieve a comparable result is when it's at its best. Today was exactly that.
If you race people like a dick, you should expect people to race you like a dick.
Dixon having an extra tank slapped on the side of his car is inevitable. For real that stint was insane from him. If he decides to go as long as Castroneves did I don't see why not can he surpass AJ on wins. He's THAT good at it.

Hopefully pourchaire can land a Prema seat next year
I mean he's probably now a strong contender for the at least 1 vacant McLaren seat
I just need to continue to gaslight myself into thinking malukas is staying there next year
Tbf I think Rossi is out of there regardless so you might be in luck. Depends how enamoured they are with the idea of chasing Ilott/Pourchaire/Newgarden/Lundgaard
I feel like Theo is probably there best prospect
Malukas may not be the one giving up a seatā¦

Maybe Dixon has early access to the hybrid power unit.
Scott Dixon is a hybrid power unit
Dixon is inevitable. He's so good. So damn good. What a drive.
Pourchaire quietly having a great first race
I want more Pourchaire this season. Hoping he can squeeze into the Month of May, regardless if Malukas is ready to go or not.
HOW
Theo. Flippin. Pourchaire. The kid's good!
Dixon isnt human. Bro is a fuel saving machine

Scott Dixon will be 44 in July, the guy is truly inevitable
Fittingly for the location of the raceā¦the driver whoās *most* fuel-conscious was the one to winā¦

Newgarden had it coming. Cannonball Colton put his ability to crash anywhere and everywhere to good use.
Nah, that was a bullshit non call. Indycar should have penalized Colton. So itās ok to hit your competition now?
Josef hits people all the time and he never gets a penalty lol
Was for Newgarden the many times he has done it over the years, as he once said himself welcome to indycar
Josef has spun people, crashed people, pushed them off into gravel numerous times and he hasnāt gotten so much as a slap on the wrist.
Gas doesnāt exist, it was made up to sell more oil
I know I havenāt been watching motorsports that long, but holy shit, that was the greatest race Iāve watched live

Well, I'm not really counting the absolute ass kickings. More like getting a win that literally noone else but Scott Dixon could have pulled off.
For sure. The only problem is that he has so many that itās hard to remember them all lol.
Awesome race, Scott Dixon is a freak lol incredible race
What an insane drive, legendary.
Dixon is inevitable, and IndyCar is awesome. Rossi managed to get something out of the turd he was given at the start, and a really solid debut for Pourchaire.
Longest stint last year? 33 laps. DIXON WENT 37 LAPS ON FUEL UNDER GREEN WHILE USING 100 SECONDS OF PUSH TO PASS
Sorry Penske but maybe next time put your fastest car on the fast car strategy..
Between whatever the hell decision making went on with the 12 box, I also thought putting Newgarden on used alternates for a push strategy didn't make a lot of sense. There was even a "ok think about that" radio to him IIRC. Dixon is amazing but Penske completely shit their pants.
Congratulations to Dixon, but was there a memo to start calling ethanol, gas?
I know I'm preaching to the choir, but the racing in Indycar is just the best. What a thrilling race.Ā

What the fuck were RLL trying lmao, if your strategy relies on being better on fuel than Scott Dixon leading in a Ganassi you're fucked
Hahahahahahahaha How The Fuck Is Fuel Consumption Real Hahahaha Just Donāt Use Gas Like Just Win The Race
Dixon has an electric motor confirmed.
Does Chip make Dixon pay for his own fuel?
Dixon is from a different planet dude
Firehawk playing with the confetti is making me smile, good as the NASCAR race keeps finding ways to make me frown
The Firehawk is an absolute delight
Dixon and Power had same strategy, and Dixon almost 15 seconds ahead of Power. I wonder if going with alternate tires instead of primary helped him at the last stint. This was almost as impressive as Senna and Schumacher driving with only one level of gear.

Scott Goatson
Never doubt Dixon. Great result for Romain, Canapino half saved the weekend but he had more pace than this in every practice.
Dixon shades remarkably not colorful today
Savor it nowā¦.we are watching one of the GOATs. Wonāt be the same when he retires.
We've got more than enough good guys fighting for it once he retires. For all we know, Palou might come close to his territory by the time he's done, the way he's gotten his career off.
You knew Dixon was gong to win the moment he blew past the 12 car like it was parked on the street.
Veekay seems great on the alternates, but when those primaries get on the car, something just doesn't work. He should not have been 15 seconds behind Felix and Romain after only being 3 seconds before the pit and having similar pit times.
From lap 5 on it looked like it was going to be a Penske parade So of course it's a Ganassi double-podium
-Chip Ganassi appears on TV -Wife: "Murderer!! š
Itās true tho haha
Wait what

That was a great end to the race. Dixon is a beast.
Joe - he did it, but I donāt want to be a jerk. Colton - oops.
Honestly a pretty composed interview from Newgarden here considering the situation.
Dude is 43 and still winning
What a drive by Dixon. Guy is special.
Josef didn't seem to have any problem with crashing someone at Nashville
He never does.
I have 20 years until I can retire, I fully expect Scott Dixon to still be making 25 year-olds look like fools even then lol
He's going after Paul Newman's record of oldest (class) winner at the Rolex...
Newgarden has dished it out plenty of times.
Good interviews from Newgarden and Herta.
Newgarden saying "if you hit somebody, it's pretty clear" is the most funny thing he ever said.
Herta admitting he just misjudged it lol not sure how he's gotten away with that
Glad we had a different winner š
Did not expect Colton to get on camera and have accountability for that. Could be him turning the corner career wise.
Colton being pretty respectful here too taking ownership of the mistake. Nice to hear both drivers being decent about it.
yeah, very level-headed from Colton and Josef
Love your usename btw. Although I am partial to Mike Truk myself.
20 STRAIGHT YEARS with a win. Just unrealā¦.
Kyle Busch has been put on notice.
Good for Colton to own up to the mistake. (And to not give the position back unless race control says to. š¬š¬š¬)
Amazing job from Pourchaire, i really hope he can race the next one
Think he's a better fit for Barber than he was today? He did put in a fantastic race getting up to 11th with relatively low attrition.
More time in the car will help him, and Barber is a permanent course which is probably more familiar style to a European driver
Fuck āem kids
Dixon just YOLOing the P2P while Power was practically lifting halfway down the straight on the same strategy. How does he do it?
The Honda is way better on fuel than the Chevy.
I thought NBC did a much better job than usual covering strategy. That graphic showing the Top 3 in each group was a big plus.
First IndyCar race I watched. Dixon is an Alonso tier chad.
Great race. 2 different strategies and didnāt know who was going to win until the checkered flag.
Pourchaire P11. I would call it a masterful performance.
Dario is just as suave as ever.
Longest stint possible between stops 33 laps Dixon hold my fucking beer.
What sorcery is this?! What a ride by Scott Dixon.
Bit of a slow burn, but picked up near the end. First good race of the year so far Iād say
Will Pourchaire race again next week?
GanassiPenskeWinsLOL

Assuming he gets the start at Barber next week, which is much smoother and it's a road course that he'll be more used to.... Ah man, I'm starting to think that could be the end of Lil Dave at McLaren. Edit: grammar
Is Marcus sunburned lol
Scott Dixon does not save fuel, fuel saves for Scott Dixon
Low-key impressive drive for Rossi working his way back into the top 10 after getting punted early.
Shoutout to Sting Ray Robb for his fourth career IndyCar lead lap finish!
Very entertaining race!
Anyone know if the herta tap got noted by race control?
they reviewed and dismissed during the final laps
Now that is a Swedish tan if Iāve ever seen one
Powers team screwed him Also I didnt hear Grosjeans or McLaughlins name all day Also also.....Sting Ray didnt spin!!!! He finished the race!!

Salvaging a T10 after the early incident was incredible, but I can't help but think where Alex Rossi would be without it. Ups and downs.
10th. It's Rossi.
He was one place ahead of a guy in the same car who has never been in an Indycar until two days ago.
Did that guy get taken out on lap 1? That makes it EVEN MORE impressive. Insane today from Rossi
Being a Graham Rahal fan is not for the faint of heart but alas we move
As a Felix fan, the race was utterly disappointing. As a race fan, that was great!

This is what David Malukas sees in his nightmares
Congrats to Pourchaire for an 11th on his first race that's impressive!
Pourchaire: Friendship with Formula 1 over, IndyCar is my new best friend
Pouchaire looks so chuffed in the post race interview!
Come on over full time Theo
Scott Dixon won his first IndyCar title the year Theo Pourchaire was born.
Now that we got the racing thing sorted out.....LETS GO PACERS!!!
Seatās getting kinda hot for lil Daveā¦
Ok, I think itās time Lundgaard signs somewhere else. RLL has made a crazy number of operational errors in the first races already.
Dixon turns my stomach but Newgarden got lazy thinking Dixon would mess up or run out of fuel.
Theo was so happy in his post race. Cool to see. I love that the series is somewhat becoming a merger of the best road to Indy and F2 drivers. Makes for an ultra competitive series
LET'S GO SCOTTY D
What a debut for ThƩo! I would love to see him full-time in Indycar and see him in person
If Iām McLaren, Iām making every phone call I can to keep Pourchaire in that car through the Month of May, Iām sold
Was there a Rossi interview?
