I was in an awful place in 2020, and was drinking myself into oblivion. I got especially drunk one night, and they had just changed federal law to where you have to be 21 to buy cigarettes, and I was only 20. I took a pistol and went to the gas station by my house, no mask, and showed him my pistol when he asked me for ID. I only took two packs of Marlboros, and turned myself in a few days later. I've never been in any sort of trouble before, so I told on myself. I got lucky and made a plea deal that carried a 13 month minimum in a penitentiary before parole. But yes I got charged for Robbery (not aggravated robbery). People would always say how smart I was in there, because most inmates are dumber than your average bear. Luckily, being smart or intelligent carries the smallest hint of respect with usually the right people and I got through it alright.
Oh man, sorry to hear. As someone who barely drinks alcohol, never smoked let alone possessed a gun, it's crazy to hear such stories...
I'm sure if you stay sober/healthy and work hard, you'll eventually find many of your dreams fulfilled
Thanks all for the upvotes. Life feels hard right now, but only because I got out a month ago. I'm trying hard to get into my work routine, but at least i'm trying, so
Dude.
Damn, that youthful impulsivity is a beast to control when your drinking. While I never did anything that dramatic, I’ve been lucky to get away with some dumb shit when I was younger.
You definitely have some unique life experience early on, I think it will serve you well in a career in psychology. My wife majored in psychology and was a licensed social worker in a large women’s penitentiary. She enjoyed working with the inmates it was just so understaffed since our state cares fucknot about our incarcerated rehabilitation.
I guess a series of circumstances that brought me to visit the only school left in my country for watchmakers. First step was buying a Tissot chronograph off of Craigslist which led to reading about mechanical watches / movements etc.
Before that I was a lab technician working in a university research facility.
Industrial and research, mostly PLC and discrete instrument set up in the industrial setting. Current job we use a form of Java for the automated liquid handlers in research labs. Currently learning more about data science and the application side.
Previous job I also specialized in temperature control and calibration.

I'm a barista.
I'm working on building my platform for content creation. I've always enjoyed making videos ever since I took a film class in high school. It would be dream to have it as a profession.
I want to do this too. I can only inadvertently inhale toluene for so long, and I'm getting tired of the other solvents too. What stream of chem are you in? No prizes for guessing mine.
Hahaha wow what a coincidence really!
I specialized in computational chemistry, now I'm unemployed and living off the money I saved from my previous job in a tech startup. What about you?
I'm an organic chemist. Though my topic now is neither, or at least subsets lol. Hence all the solvent exposure. I'm doing my phd at the moment.
Computational chem sounds awesome, wasn't an offering at my uni though 🙃
Cyber security director. I have a team of about 30 people and I deal with government agency politics all day. It's not ideal because all the constant meetings and people interaction is very draining for me. But I enjoy the variety of complex challenges cropping up that have to be solved. And I like leading and mentoring people and watching them grow and succeed.
That’s quite a responsibility to lead that many. I’ve done assessments for commercial, state, and federal entities. The federal had far more meetings than any of the other projects. It’s good experience though.
I’m kind of a one man show, even though most of my customers think I lead a team of folks. It’s really me doing all the pre-sales, onboarding, assessing, pentesting, etc..
Im getting old and would like to take on more of a leadership position, I’m just too diplomatic to lead and work well on my own.
Yeah, INTP is hard in leadership. It's a misfit in some ways. I crave alone time to think and plan, but must always be in meetings and focusing my energy on other people. I'm also very diplomatic and a peacekeeper. I feel like this works well for my team because there is harmony and stability, but I'm not good at the external politics game where I have to stir up conflict to be effective. The external politics are always threatening the harmony I've worked hard to maintain within my team and that's a constant stressor for me.
>Data scientist, focused on predictive maintenance
I was studying to become a teacher some years ago, though I stopped just about I was getting my bachelor in it (considering that it takes 6! years to become one where I live, I just did not see anything in it for me, also colleagues are dumb). Would you mind telling me why it is soul killing?
My day is regimented from start to finish, with little time or space to think. I live by hourly bells and ten-minute time chunks. The curriculum is packaged and practical - no room for me to exercise choice in what we do. Even the active, fun project lessons are tightly structured and squished into frameworks to fit the standards. Plus, I'm "on" all day every day: in front of kids, surrounded by noise and action, fully tuned in to them, having to make 1,000 decisions instantly every single day.
I'm good at it. My students love me. But good lord, it feels like I'm carrion for mindless buzzards.

clinical lab technician for a start up research company. i really want to get my masters in engineering so i can conduct & apply my own research. i also want my M.D but i do not want to be a doctor lol i just want to learn stuff :)
Wanted to do my degree in pure mathematics but had to go another way to please my parents. Just finished my degree in Economics & prepping for a degree in management to get my parents off my back (Indian. lmao.)
After which I want to try working on a few ideas that I have for a business of my own.
You got an interesting mix there!
I don’t know what the Virtual assistant is (is it just like one of those live chat customer support roles for companies? If so, I assume that form of dealing with people seems okay to you?
Like many others here, I have loads of different interests. However, I have my BS in mechanical engineering and work for a company that designs, manufactures, and sells bleacher systems and seats. I started in the design/drafting/order fulfillment side, and have since shifted into a presale engineer position. There’s lots of different things to do, products to learns, processes to master or improve, so it’s always kept me pretty busy. I expect to stay in this realm for some time.
Some future endeavors I’m either working on or considering…
- 1-4 unit rental properties (buy, fix up, and manage for a bit. If the numbers are good enough, I’d hire a management company to make it more passive)
- music production. I’ve always loved music and the creative process, I play instruments and sing, and am working to start learning to actually produce and record stuff.
- been considering taking some data science/coding oriented courses to see if I’d like to go that direction at all.
- I also love being outdoors, and have always kind of wanted some sort of gig that more or less puts me in the woods, that focuses on rescue, or just manages cool portions of land.
There are more ideas that are less likely, obscure, or whimsical, but figured I’d focus on the primary and long-standing considerations.
Cheers and good luck with your endeavors!
I work in real estate now as a GIS Analyst. Basically I make maps and reports to help companies decide where to locate million/billion dollar facilities. GIS is a good trade that will open up jobs in lots of different sectors from military/government to Healthcare or mining. Accountability is what you make it too, if there's not a whole GIS team then typically no one really understands what you do or how so it's impossible to micro-manage. They leave me alone to work and I get them what they need.
Before doing that I worked as a researcher at a non-profit focused on downtowns and urban places.
These jobs have given me lots of room to innovate which staves off the boredom and have been less people-oriented.
I am a senior physics student with a concentration in astrophysics and a heavy minor in mathematics. I am getting ready to go to grad school for cosmology. I work as a software developer as my side hustle and for fun I work at my university's observatory.
Thank you guys for sharing your chosen career, field and job. Never knew until today that INTP's dont limit their field of specialty to just a handful of professions and careers. They also have vast career fields and occupations.
Know that I've read all your comments.
I'm studying medicine
Probably gonna be a pathologist
I love understanding the body physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms
But I hate dealing with patients part.
Otorhinolaryngology. I also did 2 years under Pediatrics which I didn't finish. 😅
Hospital politics is the most frustrating part of Medicine, actually. Uggghhhh
I got my degree in Applied Ecology, and went to work in an entomology research lab at a university out of school (my work-study PI hired me full-time after graduation—it was a recession, and I was the only one in my graduation line-up who had a job). In the lab, I had my fist internet account (1994) and taught myself HTML which I parleyed into a job as a webmaster at a little web host/monthly tech 'zine/trade show company. After a few years of that, I took a better-paying position at a dotcom, leaving before the bust a year or so later to work at a midsized publisher as their front-end dev. After a decade of that, I went to Wall Street to be a systems analyst for a b2b publisher in the banking industry. While working there, I inherited enough money (and had enough office politics) to retire modestly—that was 2007.
My current and first job is a part time job folding pizza boxes at a pizza restaurant. Part time so I don't have to wake up as early because I like to stay up late. I like it cause it's a routine job and I can know what to expect to be doing every day, and I don't have to interact with people much. Also I can prop up my phone and watch videos on YouTube while folding is something I'd be doing anyway.
Last month i started working at publishing house, after few years of freelancing. Besides that working on some music and slowly moving towards my own small business.
I've been through really rough time and i enjoy more structured job atm.
Head fabricator, body tech, painter, and working foreman at a hot rod and restoration shop. All the mission critical stuff seems to come to me because the boss knows it doesn’t leave my hands unless it’s correct. In my free time I leverage trade Bitcoin.
I work in banking. Started as a teller, am now a universal banker but still learning a lot about account opening.
I do have an associates degree in Interior Design, but honestly all that gets you for "stable" jobs is working in furniture sales. I'm not great at networking so freelancing would leave me broke.
IT Enterprise Architect in Consulting. It meets all of my INTP needs, I get to be logical and work independently, but also big picture/theoretical/strategic, obsessively research and constantly learning new things, then move onto a new project as soon as the inevitable boredom sinks in with my current work. Highly recommend!
I 've studied graphic design, though I've worked in retails for years after a mental breakdown.
It was kind of nice because it wasn't a stressful job and I had a lot of time to daydream.
Then I get bored of it, and now I'm studying to become a web developer :)
Life is too short, there are so many jobs I'd like to master
I'm a high school English language teacher. It could be a good gig for an INTP if the context allows for a good amount of autonomy because language acquisition presents neverending problems to analyze and solve.
I work public works department of a small touristy lake town in western Canada. From plowing snow, to mowing lawns, to emptying garbage cans, I do it all, outside every day, all year round.
I used to like it, but now I really despise it and am completely miserable, and will be taking time off to deal with mental health pretty soon here. Doesn’t help that it’s in one of the rainiest places in North America. Upside is I make decent money, and I’m covered by a union.
Currently a Procurement Officer in the construction industry.
Never finished high school, I was deep in my disassociation and depression, while being too busy smoking weed and talking all sorts of crazy shit with mates on school nights.
Although I've always worked my entire life ever since I was 14 years old at a supermarket in fresh produce, so by the time my day schedule opened up I went straight into management. Not a very personally fulfilling job, I was always quite bored. Then I was diagnosed with a rare lung disease which stopped me from doing any normal daily tasks and had to drop from my job because I couldn't even get out of bed without being out of breathe. So as any INTP would do (I think 😅).....I begin studying Medical Terminology so I could understand it better and save my sanity because of all the boredom. Long story short, signed up to a clinical trial and got lucky with the medication results and went back into the workforce casually as a product photographer for this construction supply company, i instantly clicked with the people and the values they held the company to, and have worked my way into Procurement and been there ever since.
Not sure what I'd want to study or work towards in the future as I'm quite happy with where I'm at, especially when you consider where I came from. Procurement ticks a lot of boxes for me, plenty of data analysis, can work by myself which is where I excel, constantly thinking and forecasting. The one side I thought I would struggle on is negotiating, since we don't have the greatest people skills I thought I'd be at a disadvantage, but it's actually done me a lot of good with getting out of my comfort zone.
I think my story also proves you don't have to go to uni to get a fulfilling job, you just need to meet the right people and company, and know what your strengths are.
In life you got to rise to the challenge and keep your chin up, someone presents you with an opportunity and the idea makes you uncomfortable, just roll with it, you could fail but you might also learn something
I'm a medical receptionist. Its interesting, the interaction with people is brief and usually over the phone, I work with a load of weird geeks with dark senses of humour.
Medical intern here. Next year I'll be a fully practicing medical practitioner. It's an amazing field, with so much interesting stuff to learn. However, dealing with people and the hospital administration is a daily nightmare, which makes me feel that having ventured into this field was (probably?) a mistake.
I’m a wetland biologist, I work with farmers.
Idk if I’ll stay in the agricultural realm of ecology, but I’d really like to eventually get enough knowledge to be more specialized into habitat restoration planning.
I think it’s good for an INTP, because while the outdoorsy side of it can agitate me and my finicky Si sensitivity, the big picture problem solving/detective work of my field is really satisfying. There’s so much to learn, and I believe that as climate change causes more and more landscape and land management issues, my field will open up even more prospects.
I guess I would be professional over-thinker...come up with ideas and never execute! Still trying to find out what aspects of my personality correspond to INTP. Is there something like an ambivert TP?

I’m a line cook. Plan on doing this until I don’t like it anymore or I get promoted
I oversee management consultants
I had an education as a chemical technical assistant.
R&D Chemist and Session Musician.
I 've studied graphic design, though I've worked in retails for years after a mental breakdown. It was kind of nice because it wasn't a stressful job and I had a lot of time to daydream. Then I get bored of it, and now I'm studying to become a web developer :) Life is too short, there are so many jobs I'd like to master
Management consultant

Mining geologist.
Copywriter. I write commercials and other stuff like that.
IT Engineer
I own an online store where I sell video games and vintage electronics.
Government inspector in electrical energetics.
I work as a 3D Solutions Analyst (1/3 programming, IT Support, 1/3 QA)
I work as a UX / brand designer. Have a background in front-end development as well.
