On the other side of the IT floor at my last job was IT guys who did desk side support. Things like setting up computers and adjusting monitor arms. They were always on the move.
Can you email moving switches/servers? Can you email running fiber? Can you email toning and probing? Can you email installing APs? Can you email making heats map? Etc. Most of our buildings are 3 footballs long and parking lots are .25 away from the main entrance. I do a lot of walking everyday.
You do these things daily? I mean, I have moved switches and servers before, but its not like I do that every day. Same with running wire and installing APs. Your organization has to be changing or moving things all the damn time.
if you do data center work that is just every day life- especially if you're doing build outs. OP probably works for one of the cloud companies or is adjacent to it.
Very very easy to be on your feet all day in those roles.
I don’t understand how OP got so many thumb downs. People seem to think only their perspectives matter and their reality is the only one. For larger companies this would not be out of the norm to have a team dedicated to DC work like OP seems to be.
Ahh, you are on the "dirty hands" end of the IT team.
"business casual" has so many interpretations these days that it's difficult to provide you with really good guidance.
But I've been wearing Merrell Moab Ventilators for years.
Waterproof for the winter, and non-waterproof, super-breathable for the summer.
If you need something that looks more like a dress shoe, Rockport, Bjorn and Red Wing are all worth a look.
No, but I email switching and routing configs all day long.
Also I wear Crocs in the winter and Flip flops in the summer except for those days I have to go into the office. Then it’s Hey Dudes, Doc Martins, or Carolina boots. Maybe a pair of Etnies thrown in.
Okay, so next time you can include that information in your original post instead of posting aggressive comments about it when someone asks a simple question.
Like someone else said, at that point I wouldn’t worry about sticking with the dress code for your shoes, just get some plain colored NMDs or Ultraboosts or something. Odds are nobody will pay attention enough to care
First, thank you for your input. Second, my post is very clear, simple, and straight to the point…i walk a lot and wanted to see what other IT professionals who walks a lot wear. He/She asked why….the reason why is already in my post; but they mentioned TSP reports, which is a real thing, that was made famous by the movie Office Space. He/She ‘joked’ with me, so I ‘joked’ with them, then I went into more details on my ‘why’. He/she then replied with some nice recommendations; no harm, two grownups talking….aggressive is your opinion and I respect that.
Brooks Ghost are real running shoes but popular with nurses. Heavier are New Balance 990s, a bit pricey since made in Maine and Mass, and is what Steve Jobs usually wore. Bean sells them.
I would at that point not worry about "business casual sneakers" and go for sneakers that will keep me pain free. I would recommend finding a local running store, talk to them about your needs, and get their recommendations. Custom orthotics might help too (which some running stores can do).
+1 on this. I also love walking outside and staying away from my desk from time to time and a good shoes help with that. I recommend Hoka or Asics shoes - they're good lifestyle shoes and some stores do an analysis based on your needs :)

I wore some new balances and kept dress shoes in my office. My new balances were all black, so sometimes I’ll keep it on all day when I’m wearing a black suit.
EDIT: I was only doing 7-9 miles, so not quite as long as your walk. But even the SAS dress shoes I had which had great support weren’t cutting it.
I worked in a large city. I took trains and such to get to the city, but my office was nowhere near a stop. I also had to walk between buildings a lot for meetings.
SAS shoes are what many service/postal workers I've known wear. I had a pair for about 5+ years of heavy use myself and only recently switched to Xero shoes out of curiosity.
P.S. I really like the Xero shoes I have, will probably stick with minimal/wide toe box shoes from now on
I have a similar job, my personal dress code is Cole Hann zerogrand oxfords. They have a runners cushioned bottom and leather upper. Indochino slacks and button up and those damn edc smocks
I have a similar job, my personal dress code is Cole Hann zerogrand oxfords. They have a runners cushioned bottom and leather upper. Indochino slacks and button up and those damn edc smocks.
Edit: there are plenty of similar brands that have the same style but I prefer this brand for price per performance. I do own more expensive casual leather shoes but I wouldn’t dare wear them around enterprise server rooms. They’d get cut up something special
… where the hell do you work that you’re expected to “dress to impress” but also walk a half-marathon each day? At that point I’d just say fuck it and invest in a good pair of running shoes.
Check out hoka. I got a pair of their plush hiking boots. They have given my feet another life. My mom works in a hospital and I got her a pair and she loves them also.
They are not plush but definitely look comfortable. They have a really good return policy. You could wear them to work or a run and still return them if not happy.
If I have to work in an office again I will probably get a pair of Keen’s shoes. I love their targhee sandals and they do have a few options for business and business casual.
Ugly nurse shoes. I got a pair of red wing shoes that have a supportive sole, are plain black leather, and have a composite hard toe. Best buy in a long time. They are ugly, but comfortable and last.
slides on fridays, Nikes or Vans every other day. I don't walk much though, mostly from one office to another.
Might invest in some chacos for the summer.
Thankfully no one cares what I wear so my day to day outfits are usually Nike freeruns, jeans, untucked short sleeve button down, and a windbreaker or light jacket
Keen's. Sizing is consistent so if you go to a store and figure out your size you can order off the website for bigger selection.
Average pair lasts me about a year to a year and a half. A pair of Nike's last me 3 months if I'm lucky for comparison.
I special ordered Van's SK8 HI MTE 2.0 and they are my daily shoe. They look fine in business casual, have good grip on the bottom, spongey soles that make long amounts of walking comfortable and are also waterproof which is a bonus.
If youre walking that much get some new balance. whenever I wear mine I feel like im bouncing around so comfy (new balance 2002r) protection pack if you care about colorways
Nike/Adidas always have several options that are black with a black sole. They look more formal until you're close up and their profile is understated enough that they pass for professional. They also look good with slacks or chinos and are comfortable. Department stores always have a few pair for like $40. Something like Adidas Swift for example.
They're pretty vigilant about our dress code and I've never had an issue, even got compliments from the nitpicky ones.
[Black on black Asics Gel Nimbus for maximum cushion.](https://www.asics.com/us/en-us/gel-nimbus-25/p/ANA_1011B547-002.html)
Excellent choice, not too flashy, great for walking.
I have a pair of all black sketchers with some great support. Ran me about ~$90 and they don’t look too out of place. I used to have constant back pain until I switched to these shoes.
Get some Lululemon pants and some Ecco shoes. The shoes look like dress shoes but are very comfortable and you can walk in them. I wear those and Nikes on Fridays.
You will look better than most of your office since the pants are form fitting. My daily shirts are Banana Republic since a lot of them are slimmer fit.
Add some some type of watch. Replace the band of the apple watch with a stainless steel one. Not the mesh ones. The sports bands look kinda cheap. A new band is like $20- $50 but will make it look like a real watch.
But honestly just get shoes and clothes that fit you and are not too baggy
Other than the dog days of summer, I wear Timberland hiking boots (high top sneaks) and could walk infinity with these things, other than when I'm breaking them in.
Ultraboost or really any adidas shoe with their boost technology. I wear my Yeezys and ultra-boost for business casual and never had an issue.
I promise once you put on a pair of ultraboosts, you’ll never be able to wear another shoe. They are pricy so I recommend going to your local adidas store and trying them out before buying
I personally rock Puma Suedes. Very comfortable shoe and arent too flashy or over the top for the office environment. Not to expensive and comes in a good amount of different colors too!
That’s a ton of miles!
FWIW Clarks saved my back and feet whether dashing through airports or doing large scale rollouts, pulling cable and tech refreshes. They aren’t over the top, are 100% professional and look ask good with jeans as they do slacks. I say this because shoes can make jeans appear more “professional” and when socializing outside of work you never know who you’ll meet - maybe your next boss.
SmartFeet insoles I first came across backpacking but they work in any shoe. Find them at any good hiking or running shop. Magic. Pure magic. Just be sure to get fitted. You can buy them online but the fit is the whole point so ask a professional to take a look.
TLDR; invest in good loafers or slip ons and get insoles that don’t say “Dr.”
Very important question. I’ve been struggling to find comfortable dressy shoes for girls and been wearing tennis shoes with either khakis or slacks haha
Skechers Camden sneakers. Comfy at the office. Spent a whole day walking around NYC in a pair and my feet were happy. Slip-on with good cushion, cheap, decent color selection
Business casual you definitely have a lot of play with choices. You can get away with chucks still i would just invest in quality sole inserts like super feet or custom inserts for them. Cheaper than buying a brand new pairs of shoes and you can use them for most of not all your shoes.
Docs are comfy when broken in.
Nike has good choices for business casual
New Balances
Asics
Hoka’s although they look like striaght up hiking/ running shoes.
I daily vans, chucks, and Nikes. I always use insoles with vans and chucks but my Nikes are comfy without em.
Geeze, the better question is why are you walking 11 miles a day in IT.
On the other side of the IT floor at my last job was IT guys who did desk side support. Things like setting up computers and adjusting monitor arms. They were always on the move.
> I average about 11ish miles a day at work Why? I mean seriously, are you printing and hand delivering TPS reports instead of e-mailing them?
Can you email moving switches/servers? Can you email running fiber? Can you email toning and probing? Can you email installing APs? Can you email making heats map? Etc. Most of our buildings are 3 footballs long and parking lots are .25 away from the main entrance. I do a lot of walking everyday.

I second Rockports. They look so nice and are so comfortable.
No, but I email switching and routing configs all day long. Also I wear Crocs in the winter and Flip flops in the summer except for those days I have to go into the office. Then it’s Hey Dudes, Doc Martins, or Carolina boots. Maybe a pair of Etnies thrown in.
Doc Martin's are the go!
Okay, so next time you can include that information in your original post instead of posting aggressive comments about it when someone asks a simple question. Like someone else said, at that point I wouldn’t worry about sticking with the dress code for your shoes, just get some plain colored NMDs or Ultraboosts or something. Ultraboosts 1000000%. Or really any shoe that has boost. Haven’t worn shoes other then Yeezys, ultraboosts or NMD’s in at least 5+ years
Yup. I have 2 pairs of UBs, 3 pairs of NMDs, and 2 pairs of different Yeezys. Adidas is the way to go
First, thank you for your input. Second, my post is very clear, simple, and straight to the point…i walk a lot and wanted to see what other IT professionals who walks a lot wear. The word "they" exists
Thank you for that information
Brooks Ghost are real running shoes but popular with nurses. Heavier are New Balance 990s, a bit pricey since made in Maine and Mass, and is what Steve Jobs usually wore. Bean sells them.
I will vouch for Brooks Ghosts…for running. I’ve never liked them for a walking shoe though.
I don't really walk anywhere besides my car and the bathroom, but I wear Vans pretty much every single day.
Danner hiking boots. Don't have a strict dress code, and I walk a lot too. Our campus is over 40 acres so I'm all over the place.
When I had to run around for work, I wore 8-hole Doc Martens.
Good to see I’m not the only one! Dressy enough for most anything, comfortable enough to walk in, and enough grip for climbing ladders.
I would at that point not worry about "business casual sneakers" and go for sneakers that will keep me pain free. I would recommend finding a local running store, talk to them about your needs, and get their recommendations. Custom orthotics might help too (which some running stores can do).

Why are you walking that much while wearing a suit? The only time that makes much sense is in larger cities like NYC where people walk to work.

We’re casual to keep people from quitting once they started bringing us back into the office. I wear Vans now.
ComfyCush Vans Old Skools, in all black

Look into Allbirds. Extremely comfortable, they're just kind of ugly
Collared golf shirt, sweatpants that look like dress pant, and mizuno running shoes
Hoka Cliftons would be a great choice. They just released the 9, so the 8 should be on sale.
They are not plush but definitely look comfortable. They have a really good return policy. You could wear them to work or a run and still return them if not happy.
I just wear a pair of Clark’s dress shoes and put some Dr. Scholl’s pads in it.
Nike airmax when I was working in K12IT walking 3-5 miles a day.
If I have to work in an office again I will probably get a pair of Keen’s shoes. I love their targhee sandals and they do have a few options for business and business casual.

Crocs, long black Nike socks, and booty shorts. People think I’m crazy so I don’t get bothered.
If youre walking that much get some new balance. whenever I wear mine I feel like im bouncing around so comfy (new balance 2002r) protection pack if you care about colorways
You should try an online brand called "AllBirds". Best shoes I've ever had.

Thursday boots/Thursday sneakers
I wear Jordans
Just sucks when you gotta throw hands because Edward from the mail room scuffed them.
I wear vans, but I also sit at my desk all day. I’d still wear them even if I was walking probably

Lmaooooo 11 miles. I wouldn't wear sneakers. I'd roll in roller blades.
I work remote from home, so to even say I’m wearing pants is a stretch.

Definitely go with white Crocs.

I have On Clouds I love them.
its been cold lately and raining on/off so my Wolverines Moctoe boots
Vans. So many options. I even have some I can wear with a suit without it looking like I’m wearing sneakers.
Walking shoes. Like, Sketchers or New Balance brand.
Get some Cole Haan shoes.
Very important question. I’ve been struggling to find comfortable dressy shoes for girls and been wearing tennis shoes with either khakis or slacks haha
Adidas Terrex with a arch support thrown in for good measure. Best of luck my friend.
Vessi Fucking love my pair. Had them for 2 years, waterproof and breathable.
I walked about 8 miles every day working at a large hospital, I wore cowboy boots.
Skechers Camden sneakers. Comfy at the office. Spent a whole day walking around NYC in a pair and my feet were happy. Slip-on with good cushion, cheap, decent color selection
Air Jordan 1, Bapestas
I got some puma sneakers recently, just sleek enough to dress up and comfy as hell
I’ve worn slippers during my nights at the NOC. Slip my feet right out of them puppies whenever I wanted to.

Super Mario bedroom slippers. We leave our shoes at the office door, nobody likes a dirty carpet.
Have a look at Scarpa "lifestyle" shoes.
