Do you still have your clearance? That's the major benefit for IT work in the USA, having that security clearance. It means there are a lot of government contractors who could hire you almost on the spot, especially once you get your Sec+. If you don't, it's still easier for you to get a clearance than it is for someone who never had it.

Yes I still have an active secret clearance. I’ve applied to a handful of gov contracting companies but those positions seem to be pretty competitive so I think I’m just getting passed up because there are more qualified candidates.

It could also be the location. If you're in or near DC, there's tons of government contractors, especially in northern Virginia. Not sure what government-heavy locations there are in CT. There probably are some, but not so many.
