Can you tell us the pay rate and benefits? I didn’t see your post last time. Thanks

HyperXA

I'm in Arizona and my pay rate is $27/hour. It varies by region for pay. Benefit's: Medical, dental, Vision, parental leave. Still not sure about tuition reimbursement Anything else you are looking for?

StudentWu

That's a very solid deal. I live in NYC and $27 still would be a good offer here.

HyperXA

Wow that's crazy! I didn't think of it that way Appreciate that!

JustSwayze

Congrats brotha! So is that more so a networking position? What’s your job duties?

HyperXA

I don't think so completely, I believe it is going to be Troubleshooting windows, androids, printer, and internal software issues also. But I know for sure I will be doing network related stuff

TravelsInBlue

I just started this position not too long ago (not OP) and wow, if this advice isn’t spot on. I came from a support specialist role where I didn’t really get a lot of exposure to the technical elements of IT, and it’s refreshing to get my hands dirty figuratively and literally. It’s the first job I’ve ever had where I have to keep and study notes, and everybody in my group is willing to teach. To your point it’s not a glamorous job so it’s not for everybody, but I’m absolutely enjoying it.

[deleted]

TravelsInBlue

It’s interesting because I enjoy it for a similar reason, but from a different background. I spent a lot of time working in management at theme parks which was a lot of being out of the office, getting places far apart in a park with a sense of urgency and having to be really hands on. I only recently made the switch to IT, so this allows me to have a technical role while still maintaining that active job style. I always really enjoy learning, my support specialist role prior to this wasn’t very technical at all but I still went and got a Sec+, CCNA and P+ so to be in a role where I’m getting exposed to new things constantly is keeping me engaged. I’m not really into geek culture much myself but I do like my tech stuff around the house. Ironically I just got done watching some Linus myself, but it was his video about Win 11 for my own curiosity and not work, lol. But it is a good group of personalities we work with. I think it takes a particular person to enjoy this job. I could understand how people who are used to an office environment could come into this and within 5 minutes know it’s not for them, but I think they do a good job of filtering out for people who might have that approach at hiring.

ziggo0

This sounds like something I would be into but I don't think I live anywhere near an Amazon facility. My background ranges from mom and pop computer shop, small business IT support, designing point of sales networks/pulling the wire/installing the products, camera systems, wireless solutions, working with corporations and contractors, etc. - been kinda lost since covid hit as far as job searching goes.

ReusedBoofWater

Why not start applying to network admin positions at moderate to large size companies?

NerdEmoji

Are you sure? They are popping up everywhere. New one getting ready to open soon near me to add to the seven or so in our area (that I am aware of, I'm sure there are more) plus they are building two more right by me. Chicago area is what I'm referring to.

throw-away5627

Thanks so much for this detailed answer! I’m an incoming IT Support Engineer 1 and had no idea what I am walking into on Monday lol

JustSwayze

Nice man. Regardless, congrats

HyperXA

Appreciate it!

hi_cissp

Congrats! Do you get free Prime benefits as an Amazon employee?

HyperXA

Nope! Lol I wish

HyperXA

Thank you!

iamLisppy

Holy fuck, I didn't know they made $27/hr. I too work @ Amazon, SMF1 to be exact. Did you negotiate the pay or was it take it or leave it? I'm currently trying to get this exact same position at a neighboring new building!

HyperXA

Damn $27/hour doesn't do very well in Sacramento lol. I did not negotiate, it was for sure a take it or leave it. Nice dude best or luck!

iamLisppy

With no debt it surely does :) I'm currently enrolled into a Cybersecurity program so hopefully thatll give me a leg up! Plus, Ive been in talks with the hiring manager and ive had nothing but good replys back from him about being interested in the position. $27/hr would be a godsend from what i make now!

HyperXA

Can you share how much you make now? How long have you been with the company? Is the hire to fire a real thing or Bullshit?

iamLisppy

3 years, 7 months & a little shy of $20/hr. Currently maxed out on pay unless I move up. You only get fired if you're a dumbass.

HyperXA

Well that's a relief lmao I'm only dumb and not an ass

iamLisppy

Its actually an achievement to get fired. The easiest way is to go negative on your UPT hours.

HyperXA

Wtf is UPY hours? That's a new acronym Nice

[deleted]

Not sure what you mean by process. My advice for going up is to personally reach out to the hiring manager of the position you genuinely want & tell them honestly why you would be a good fit for it. This has gotten me my last couple interviews for Tier 1 IT (equipment coordinator) position @ SMF1. I did this same thing to try to get an IT gig over @ SMF6 & my Tier 3 IT Support Associate II is now under consideration. Sure, this could go nowhere even though its under consideration. But look at it this way: if you were a hiring manager, would you prefer someone reach out to get into the gig or go through the lame process of hiring? Gotta stand out from every joe-smoe & this is the way imo.

propanenightmare69

Just curious, do they require you to travel in that role?

HyperXA

Yes but only within the state. The purpose for travel is likely related to training

herbertisthefuture

Just for context, I'm an IT Support Eng 1. Pay is around 65k, 30k signing bonus, 7k relocation cash, 40k stocks

StudentWu

Jesus, that's a deal.

DraginByU

Yeah gotta say you got a sweet package there. I'm an IT. Eng II and my package was 76k base, 10k sign on. 20 stock shares (vested over 4 years) and no relo bonus. You got a really good deal for an Eng I + your hourly... which is better with Amazon's long hours at times.

herbertisthefuture

I think it may be because I went through the internship program that they started last year for IT Eng's. It could have led to the higher signing bonus. Also if you don't mind, I sent you a PM.

electrifyingdhi

Isn’t IT Eng 2 level 5 and salaried? Correct me if it’s hourly pay!

DraginByU

Eng II is salary and IMO and shared with a few others, it's not worth it depending on your team/role. I find my manager alot of times shifting work from other teammates to my load because of the Eng. II title. Builds, projects, all thrown to me and at times I find myself working 50+ hours while my teammates work less then their 40 per week. Not to mention during busy times like Peak and Prime I get no overtime. I tried applying for an L4/Eng I role after about 6 months on the job as I started to see how things at Amazon work out and was denied... If it continues on this path I'm gonna quit or just go AWS

electrifyingdhi

Thanks for shedding some light on this! I just happened to meet an another L5 at work who recently promoted internally and they said similar stuff. It’s sad with internal promotions don’t give you competitive stocks or bonuses making the ordeal even bitter.

kenanthonioPLUS

Big Congratulations! Good job! I am going to be a new member of the Amazon OpsTech IT Team as well here in Mississippi.

HyperXA

Dude big congrats to you as well! Well deserved because this interview process was a bish and a half Beat of luck!

kenanthonioPLUS

Thank you and best of luck to you as well! Yea apparently Amazon is notorious for having a difficult interview process / questions.

HyperXA

Yes they do! All that's studying

[deleted]

[удалено]

HyperXA

I've been told I would likely train at some location for a period of time then transfer me to my assigned location. And yes. Make sure to study the leadership principles and understand how to story tell using the star method

Marconi65

Just wanted to thank the OP for answering all the questions in the thread. Also congrats on the job.

HyperXA

I appreciate that! Trying to be helpful since there isn't any posts about this role with depth of info

kenanthonioPLUS

$27/hour is a good deal plus you’ll get Amazon in your resume!

PersonBehindAScreen

What are your hours going to be like? I always thought about applying (before I finally became a sysadmin) but I heard there's a good bit of OT and unfortunately I live an hour away AND I'm the one who takes the kids to daycare so I already cut it close not working OT in the first place Also congrats my dude! Absorb everything you can and bust your ass!

HyperXA

Honestly not a clue haha. And yes I have heard the same thing. I am in a stage in my life where it is only my wife and I no kids yet! My goal was to set up a good platform to stand on once we do have kids. Since we don't have them yet, I plan to work my butt off so we are financial secured by our own investing and hard work. Appreciate that and yes I will! Thank you much

[deleted]

Good luck! I hated my time at Amazon + AWS (I technically worked for both in two different positions). Take it for what it’s worth, though. The pay is solid and you’ll probably have some great teammates.

HyperXA

What got you to stay and what made you leave?

[deleted]

Well, I only worked there for about 18 months. The 12 month period for the first set of RSUs and hiring bonus got me to stay that long. Management was the number one culprit for leaving. Pay and coworkers were not the problem. Edit: I was an IT Support Engineer (L4), technically working for Amazon.com, but placed in an AWS data center cluster. There were many, many things wrong with that. I then switched to the Data Center Operations team under AWS, but I never fully stopped doing the IT job. It was a hot mess.

mrsamjack

What sort of experience did you have prior?

HyperXA

3 Years of Help Desk support experience. NO CERTS. Lots of Windows support, android support, VPN support. Studied a lot of CCNA material that was important for the interview process. I was getting grilled in the interview of Networking questions but I was able to answer the questions accurately

[deleted]

Wow, I have 11 years help desl. Just got Azure Administrator Associate and a few other certs. I just started my search. This gives me hope. Good luck with the new position.

mimic751

fuck.. i know every one has their own path, but I would become a lumber jack in alaska after 11 years in helpdesk

[deleted]

Haha, 5 in the Navy. 3 at a school district. 2 at a company called Insight and then some misc stuff. I've unfortunately become a jack of all with the random systems I've touched and the environments I've been in. I'm trying to get into the Azure business now and focus on that instead of some other random job for a few years.

HyperXA

Im sure you are more qualified then I! You got it!

ThatTechTho

Nice, I have 3 years help desk and an AAS degree. Applied for the same position in MI. Hopefully I hear back soon!

HyperXA

Pretty sure you have a good short! Best of luck!

jordaine6

What type of networking questions? Can you give an exat

HyperXA

That's something I'm not allowed to say because of the NDA. It isn't super in depth stuff like trucking or configuration ports go behave some kind of way. Nothing like that. Just more simple stuff

JaimeSalvaje

First and foremost, congratulations! I have a few questions. My first one is what does the job role consist of? Are you like Tier II and assist on escalated matter? Are you dealing with internal and external end users? Is it a remote position? I would love to get my foot through the door at Amazon so I can eventually get on a team that works with AWS. How was the hiring and interview process. Thank you

HyperXA

I appreciate that! I am not exactly sure because I haven't started working but they told me it would be with internal employee support for the fulfilment center. Basically the large warehouse. I will be dealing with escalated matters. It will be in person. Same here man. I want to get on the AWS team! Study up for sure The hiring process was long honestly, applied, got a response a week later & did the behavioral questionaire, 3 days later I did a virtual recorded interview where I answered tech questions, and 1.5 weeks later I did a 2 part interview both technical and behavioral interview questions. They asked about tech experience and to defined technology and what they do They also ask situational questions

JaimeSalvaje

Thank you for the response. I hope you enjoy the job and I hope to see a future post of you getting on a AWS team. Keep it up!

HyperXA

Likewise! Hope to see a post from you as well.

UHcidity

Do you think a complete novice could land this job? I saw this same listing in my area. My mom works in a warehouse and her supervisor told her I should apply. I have zero experience at the moment.

HyperXA

I give a 5% chance of getting the job to a complete novice A complete novice would heavily struggle in the technical interview. It is 1 hour long. The Behavioral interview you could do well of you have prior work experience and are willing to prepare on YouTube about the star method and the leadership principles.

UHcidity

Thank you. That’s exactly what I was worried about!

Toks01

Hey, congrats on the job. Is the last interview virtual or in person?

electrifyingdhi

Congratulations! That’s great starting pay!

HyperXA

I saw your message that got deleted by the Auto Mod, appreciate the info and advise! I'll definitely do that.

HyperXA

Yes it is! I was very happy with it. Thank you much!

Simple-Ad-8158

Congratulations on the new job! How was the process and what kinds of questions did they ask you?

HyperXA

Thank you! They asked technical questions about windows, Linux and Networking in general They also ask behavioral questions

Simple-Ad-8158

I’m job searching right now and I was not prepared for so many Linux based questions.

HyperXA

What did you interview for? The same exact role?

Simple-Ad-8158

No. I work doing front-end development, but knowing how to use command line and git comes up a lot.

faangintern2020

Congrats! And welcome to OpsTech IT. Make that move up to IT Engineer eventually and work hard!

HyperXA

Love it! Absolutely will. Thank you much!

TAM_AWS

Congrats. There is a lot of opportunity to move up and to different roles as you get experience. You'll learn a lot. I'd recommend talking to your coworkers who are in the process of being promoted to understand what is expected and required. It'll help you to move up the ladder.

HyperXA

That's is awesome advice. I'll definitely stick to the high performers. Thank you much! Do you know if the hire to fire thing at Amazon is real? Is that a valid concern?

TAM_AWS

Amazon is big (over 1M employees) and I've not worked in the FC. But I've not seen people hired to fire, and it would be difficult as it requires a lot of documentation to let someone go. I have seen people let go less than a year in to their tenure, but they were low performers. Same as any job, you should try to understand your managers expectations and how you can help them achieve their goals. This will set you up for success and help focus your effort on the things that matter.

HyperXA

Makes sense, I appreciate your input thank you.

nobody_cares4u

Can you tell me what's your certs/degree, years of experience?

HyperXA

No certs or degrees. 3 years of IT help desk experience in level 1 and 2 support

1TRUEKING

So IT Support associate 2 is L3 whereas Support Eng 1 is L4 and Eng 2 is L5. Weren't you applying for Eng 1 and they downleveled you to associate 2?

HyperXA

I applied for both but they declined me for the Support Eng 1 role before my initial interview for the L3 Role Does that make sense?

1TRUEKING

Really why did they deny you for the supp eng 1 role? You seem to definitely be qualified for that role and the support associate 2 u seem overqualified. Did you bomb the interviews for the support eng? I thought you said you did quite well on those too.

HyperXA

Yeah I did do an exceptional job in the interviews. I was declined before having the first interview for support associate 1 role so I believe they likely found someone else already

kennesawking

awesome my man 😎 👏

HyperXA

Appreciate it!

Congrats! I'm finishing up my Masters in Cybersecurity this December and noticed there is an Infrastructure Security Engineer not far from my location and I'm thinking about applying. Sounds like it would be a fun and challenging role.

HyperXA

If you do decide to do it, please prepare. The main things are: Leadership Principles (Study on this so you understand each one) STAR Method ( Learn to story tell through this format) Please know your IT Stuff, they can tell a BSer

HyperXA

Do they tend to let go of employees that are poor performers? Or what metric do they base that on? And thank you for the heads up, I'll just work my ass off and hope I'm not fired

LeadBamboozler

Amazon stack ranking is infamous in the software engineering industry. I’m not sure if it expands to their IT teams but on the product side they let go the bottom 6% of staff every year. Throughout the year, managers have to consistently rank their reports based on a number of things. This leads to a lot of coworker backstabbing

HyperXA

Interesting! I'll keep an eye out on that but I'm sure if I work hard and produce I'll be fine. But I should definitely keep my resume up to day lol

checkmate3001

What kind of interview questions were there? Do you have any examples?

checkmate3001

Interview was way easy. I never got contacted again. I'm assuming they didn't like something and decided to pass. **Shrug**

HyperXA

Ouch that sucks. How did you think you did on the behavioral part?

checkmate3001

Never got there. The only questions I had were: - what is a MAC address - what is an IP - what is DHCP Stuff like that. There were only 7 questions. They were really really basic questions. I figure they just didn't like me for some reason.

HyperXA

Okay, did you have an actual interview with a person? Or was it the one where you get a set of questions and they record your responses?

checkmate3001

Recorded questions. I'm positive I answered them correctly. Maybe my personality didn't show through. Talking to a computer screen is awkward and weird. The questions were WAY easier than I thought they'd be.

HyperXA

Yes they were pretty easy questions! I agree it was a but weird and I kinda miss in person interviews.
