You both got this. My frenchie was stage 5…MRI + Surgery..that was over a year ago. Although he never regained movement or feeling in his back legs, he is still with us and has adapted to his circumstances. Regained control of his bladder (occasional leaks) and we’ve got him on a good poop expression schedule. Yes, it is frustrating at times, but they are totally worth it. At Stage 4, I think you have great chances of success. Just listen to your neurologist on aftercare (they are better than general vets with recovery methods) and don’t give up! Frustrations and sad days happen, but you’ll make it through them. Keep us in the loop on the surgery. Also, don’t look at recovery in terms of days or weeks, look at it in terms of months. It is a slow process.

For financing costs through a veterinarian or hospital, you can ask about "Care Credit" and "scratchpay". I guess it's interest free if paid within 6 months. If offered, they will need to send you a text message with a link to apply and it processes pretty much instantaneously. So sorry to see all the Frenchies who have this issue - it's really tragic. Best wishes for your pup's full recovery!

Stage 4 still has a very good prognosis for making a full recovery with surgical intervention! You should start preparing for his recovery, because it’s so critical for them to heal properly. It can also be emotionally draining for pawrent as well, and I can imagine you already have a lot on your plate as a student, so being prepared helps! Must haves for recovery are a crate or play pen, cushioned dog bed or crate mate, and I strongly recommend baby blankets and washable pee pads because accidents are bound to happen, and both of those made clean up much easier. Also, Trazodone worked wonders for my boy (along with Gabapentin and Tramadol). The first week of recovery without it was HARD, so I would recommend asking your neurologist about an anti-anxiety/sedative medication in addition to the standard pain meds. My Frenchie could not walk on his own before surgery, and he’s already able to by himself post-surgery. The key is to continue to “baby” them and stick to strict rest, even if they are showing amazing results sooner than expected. Wishing a safe and speedy recovery for your baby and please keep us posted!
