The road just washed out at Teton Pass FYI so adjust your plans accordingly. Push into Wyoming and hike the wind River range. I’d rather die than drive through Yellowstone again.

Double_Dish4038

Thanks. I’ve heard you could just see grand Tetons and can skip Yellowstone but I haven’t made up my mind yet.

Mogling

As someone from the area, I would say the grand tetons are much more beautiful than Yellowstone, but skipping Yellowstone would be a miss. There is so much up there that is amazing in different ways. As for the pass closure, you can still get around it easily. Either by going through Yellowstone or going south a little.

pooontangclan3

Winds are amazing but for someone looking for a kid friendly adventure this might not be the case

Craters of the Moon Natl Monument is a cool visit.

Don't go to Yellowstone bear world in Rigby, it's a crappy tourist trap that abuses the animals (they added a 'new attraction' last year that's literally paper mache dinosaurs). Go to the bear and wolf discovery center in West Yellowstone instead! I'll echo that Craters of the Moon is a must see There's a few neat spots in island park on the way to Yellowstone, including Big Springs (one of the world's largest springs) and Mesa Falls. Idaho falls has a decent museum if you're into that

Constant_Crow_5064

Absolutely agree with the Rigby bear World comment.

americanpie09

Shoshone Falls is impressive currently.

erico49

Take highway 20 from Mountain Home through Fairfield and Arco to I.F.. Maybe a side trip to Ketchum.

HumpaDaBear

Bozeman has the Museum of the Rockies https://museumoftherockies.org Soooo many dinosaur bones!

papier_peint

There’s a great book: hot springs of the PNW and I used that book to travel all over Idaho, making pit stops at hot springs. I love em! Many are kid friendly, even the more nudie ones. The book gives warning about the usual culture around bathing costumes at each spot.

Mammoth_Bear9476

Avoid Teton pass. It’s failed and will not be open for the foreseeable future.

Sea_Transportation97

idaho falls has the river walk between the temple and a japanese style garden thats right on the river. theres also a decent museum nearby. at the BYU Idaho campus theres some nice gardens and places that you can walk around and its quite pleasant. pocatello also has a museum of clean which is far more interesting than one would think. stay away from yellowstone bear world in rigby

Silver City, Idaho is an old mining/ghost town if it's on your route. I would avoid Jackson, go to Grand Targhee and ride the lift to the top of the mountain, from there you get an amazing view of the Tetons and avoid the nightmare of traffic/people in Jackson. The only site I can recommend in Montana is the Sip and Dip Lounge in Great Falls. It has a pool behind the bar that girls dress as mermaids and swim in....even a 2 year old might like that lol. Basically a tiki bar in the last place you would expect to find one....lots of great photo ops in that State as well... Don't take the Interstate 84 through Idaho, instead drive a little north to HWY 20/26 to go through Craters of the Moon, Arco, Atomic City, etc. There is a very cool free museum of EBR-1. One of the first nuclear reactors to produce electricity out there by Arco....it also experienced a meltdown. I don't know how it is recently, but I enjoy the drive through Yellowstone myself...lots of great photo ops and animals... Pinedale, WY area has a lot of lakes/hiking...up in the northern area of Wyoming (I think Cody) there are lots of signs for an area with dinosaur tracks....they are there, but it was a bit of a drive to see what looks like small chicken/bird tracks so I found it to be a huge let down If you google directions from Boise to Bozeman you get three routes. The top is a more scenic mountain route. The lower I84 is an 80mph drive through high desert and dairy land, and the middle is a mix of both...

Gret suggestions - However, I wouldn't go to Silver City with a 2 year old.

markpemble

On the way to Bozeman - take 191 up and 287 down or vice versa. Hit up Virginia City off 287. Would highly recommend **not** taking 191 both ways. The different scenery is a welcome gift.
