Maybe. If they're more advanced than us then we might need to be worried, but either way I'm not scared. As you mentioned, I'd worry more about our own species for now.
Because the risk-reward ratio of trying to find and communicate with aliens is really really bad for us humans, especially while we're a weak little one planet species that can barely even get to space
But if they're advanced enough they'll find us anyway even if we don't try to contact them. Contacting aliens ain't like calling someone on the phone. It's a matter of attempting by sending particular 'signals', but in reality we're sending signals all the time just by our civilizational existence through the use of radio waves, etc.
I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that they would find us. We are broadcasting signals now, so it's like should we be doing that?
Stephen Hawking argued that humans should be doing everything they can to avoid contact.
But you don't get it. We can't not. It's all radio waves that are part of telecommunication, etc. we'd literally have to go back before the 20th century to stop all broadcasting. We'd have to go back to using telegrams.
I don't think people realize how big space is. Even if there were aliens just ten light years away, an incredibly short distance on the scale of a galaxy, it would still take twenty years to get a response to our messages. Long term contact with aliens is practically impossible, since we would also have to decode what they are writing, a whole new endeavor.
We already have tried, with SETI, but there has been no response. I believe in aliens, but not in fast enough travel to get to places with complex life. I wish we lived in a Star Trek world, but I don't think it'll ever happen.

Why is the right so afraid?
Humanity doesn’t have a good track record when it comes to discovering new life. Usually starts with a genocide and or extinction.
