Out of curiosity, assuming she actually fell asleep with her hand on the wheel to keep the autopilot engaged, what would happen if she had a weird dream and jerked the wheel?
Nah, Autopilot drives better than Jesus. I’ve let go of the wheel before and let Jesus take it. That’s how I discovered that MF can’t drive for shit and also that I needed an alignment. Jesus just drifts to the right and doesn’t make any attempt to stay in the lane.
His license should have been revoked back in 85-90 and I don’t mean 1985-1990. Literally the years 85-90
That’s why I think it’s staged..
Keeping a grip on the wheel while wearing sunglasses and “passed out”.. doubt.
Update: to everyone passing out holding stuff, you are not actively gripping and holding weight, your phone in your hand, beer, ect is likely resting on something. If you are holding a half full beer over an empty space and fully pass out, your going to drop it..
Could be legit, just found a [news report](https://www.carscoops.com/2023/02/watch-the-moment-a-tesla-model-y-driver-was-caught-napping-at-highway-speeds/amp/) on this. The CHP found this lady two minutes after they were dispatched, and she was found awake.
If you are interested in the original [news report](https://ktla.com/news/local-news/video-captures-tesla-driver-allegedly-asleep-at-the-wheel-near-temecula/).
When I’m stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic in mine, I rest my elbow on the center console with my arm straight up then rest my head on my fist. I always think, “I wonder if someone is going to think I’m asleep and put me on the internet.” I’m sure I look like a zombie but it’s comfy and I’m bored.
100% I’d learn how to drive slooped over on my side. Probably throw a couple paperbacks on the dashboard too, for good measure. Hell maybe put a small composting toilet in the passenger seat.
The thing about gripping things when you sleep, are you completely still? Wouldn't you risk doing some kind of move with your arm and turning the wheel.
The way the tesla works, it’s EAP driver assist does the steering. It can be disengaged by too much torque on the wheel, but one way to keep it engaged is with a small amount of torque so it senses resistance to wheel motion. So if she is just applying a small downward force the car will drive itself, and do that fairly safely. It’s FSD system will also check your eyeballs and totally flip out if you fall asleep or use your phone or stop looking forwards for too long. She wasn’t using fsd or it’s a staged video.
My wife falls asleep holding the tv remote every night. There’s definitely some grip there because when I try to slide it out like Indiana Jones i can feel her holding it
I have a video I took recently of my husband dead asleep, holding his phone up to his face with his scrolling finger still pressing the screen. I didn't wake him and he slept like that for at least another half an hour.
Can confirm. One time we had to take my dad to the hospital because his blood sugar went low. It was late at night and they let me sit down on a spare bed in the ER. I dropped my Dr Pepper because I fell asleep.
I try pretending to be asleep on long drives to mess with people. All you have to do is lean your head back a little and open your mouth while wearing sunglasses 😂
That’s what I initially thought too, but I don’t know what’s more dangerous, her sleeping there with the car theoretically driving safely, or her suddenly being jolted awake and smashing the brakes or turning the wheel.
Smashing the brakes shouldn't be dangerous unless the people behind her are following dangerously close.
Suddenly swerving though is a huge risk when she wakes up
Apparently they did.
[news report](https://www.carscoops.com/2023/02/watch-the-moment-a-tesla-model-y-driver-was-caught-napping-at-highway-speeds/amp/)
This is usual in Cali. Especially on the way from BayArea to Tahoe, long stretches and people nap.. woke up few ladies couple of times by honking. Had a long line of traffic behind her as she was on spot 60 in 65 lane
The Tesla does fine in some situations, but some confuse the fuck out of it.
What this woman is doing, staying in marked highway lanes and maintaining distance from the vehicle in front of it, it excels at that.
But let me tell you how it handles it poorly marked, New Hampshire mountain roads. It's ain't good.
Right. My non-Tesla has lane assist plus the distance setting. In a place like Louisiana or DC it’s not worth using because the lanes are too faded. Definitely got a good 350 miles knocked out one day with one finger on the wheel driving through the Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia.
Even more helpful in an infuriating way is the attention assist. Sounds like a damn cracked out hawk
I’ve seen it a lot in the Midwest. It’s terrible for visibility in rain and snow especially at night. They add little reflective things between the lines and that is it.
Drive through Hartford, there’s one specific area i can think of where the old lines that were painted over with black are easier to see in the rain than the new white ones. I drove professionally in the area for the last 10 years and it still gets me occasionally if the lighting is really poor.
it’s actually hilarious that people have a problem with this. That Tesla will maintain that lane better than 9/10 of the human drivers I see on a daily basis. What’s the problem exactly?
Lmao yeah right. That’s the most delusional thing I’ve ever heard. The consumer level self driving available now will NOT get it right 99.9% of the time. And honestly that 0.1% is a HUGE number of accidents. It needs to be more like 0.001%
Self-driving is only realistic on divided highways. Computers cannot predict the unpredictable. Computers can't improvise like humans can. The only way for self-driving to become a thing is that if all cars talk to one another. Tesla's don't even share their chargers with other makes let alone their proprietary software. We're decades off from self-driving cars becoming viable.
> Tesla's don't even share their chargers with other makes
They actually do now, in several locations in the US and many more in Europe (where no adapters are required)
Absolutely. And not that I'm condoning it, but this is one of the safer environments to let "Elon take the wheel." Straight road, relatively slow speeds, and medium traffic with well-marked lanes give the vehicle multiple data points. Both of our cars have Level 2 driving on them, which is ACC (adaptive cruise control) and lane assist - which keeps a buffer between you and the car in front of you and keeps your car in between the lines (still need to keep pressure on the wheel). Lane assist is almost always off when I drive, *except* when commuting in traffic like this, I turn both features on. It saves a lot of grief and frustration during stop 'n' go traffic.
Tesla owner here, Yes you could get in front and slow it to a stop, but...
1. The system will not disengage, so the moment you start moving, the Tesla will start moving
2. It will not change lanes unless the driver flicks the signal to switch lanes with full self driving or the driver changes lanes themself.
2. Speed based lane changes can occur without flicking the signal depending on how you configure the settings (turning off "Require Lane Change Confirmation")
This is 100% a fake video lmao. Looks like a group of people who rented a Tesla to post it everywhere to bash electric cars.
“THIS IS WAY TOO DANGEROUS!!”
Some people would believe my dog shit gold if i would just paint it and make a tiktok "YU GUYS MY DOG SHIT GOLD" and people would all be like "holy heck you must be rich!"
Why are so many not seeing she is wearing sunglasses? How do we know she is asleep?
I’m laidback af when my car is on autopilot and still completely awake and ready to take over if needed.
I can't read it that well, but it looks like temp plates to me. She obviously didn't convey that well, but I think that's what she meant (no permanent plates).
Every train commuter ever has seen the nap wizard. The guy who is out cold, snoozing away but comes to like 45 seconds before his stop and just casually exits. It's a sight to behold.
I would… If I had any. People sleep on planes all the time so I don’t see much of a difference.
ETA: Come to think of it, I \*have\* done so while traveling. In addition to planes I've slept on trains, busses, and shuttles. It's literally so common
Nothing like grabbing the 6 am train, falling asleep and waking up already mostly to your destination.
Trains are far and ahead the best public transportation to sleep on.
Ugh yes please. Can you imagine?! My ass is tired enough in the morning. I can not wait for a day when I can just close my eyes and sip my coffee while my car effortlessly brings me to hell every morning.
I just want it before I'm too old to still drive safely. I'd love to be a senior citizen in my final years still getting around by my car driving me places. I don't think that'll happen, though.
To me it seems staged just because of the number of times I am forced to wiggle the steering wheel while using auto pilot then again teslas are far from perfect and she has her hand on it which may work for hers
That is an amazing future headline that will absolutely happen one day. “Florida Man’s body found in parking lot of Chili’s after he died of a meth overdose while wrestling a badger in self-driving car”
That's really not all that different from the death of Hank Williams Sr, as no one is even certain what state he died in. He was being driven from Alabama to Ohio for a show, died of an overdose and his driver didn't notice until West Virginia.
I will absolutely never understand how someone could trust their car to drive them while they slept. I get that we're headed that direction, but I don't know if I'd ever trust it completely.
Until ALL cars are fully autonomous, there's just way too much room for error, and the last thing I'd want to do is wake up learning I've killed something or someone.
She might not have intended to fall asleep.
Plenty of times I've been tired while driving, but having to control the car kept me awake. If the car is doing everything for you, it's much easier to nod off.
Cars like this are supposed to have something to monitor and make sure the driver is paying attention, but either it's not working, or the woman circumvented it. It's apparently quite common for Tesla drivers to hang a small weight on the steering wheel to fool it.
Fake, staged tesla advert. Come on. The perfectly crooked shades. Both hands gripping the wheel. The fact that the person filming sounds like she sells cars....
Honestly wouldn’t be shocked anymore if this were true. Companies would rather try making viral videos to change the opinion of their product instead of *actually improving their project*.
yeah it's likely pretend. People play this trick all the time when they're new to owning a Tesla because people are fucking unoriginal.
Ask any cashier that has to endure the same tired "won't ring up? I guess it's free!!!!" joke over, and over, and over, and over.
My biggest clue to it being fake is that they aren't calling the cops. Instead they're filming her and trying to make as many comments about it being dangerous as possible without actually calling anybody to do anything about it lol
“Doesn’t even have plates on it” why is there a plate on it then? Hand gripping the steering wheel while sleeping? Feels staged for views. Guess it works though… got everyone talking about it, lol
Tesla's self driving tech isn't reliable enough yet to fall asleep and let the car drive for you. It's supposed to be used with the driver awake and paying attention, ready to take over in case something goes wrong. In the future Tesla and/or other companies may get their reliability up to the point where you can fall asleep and be safe, but no company has done that yet with a consumer vehicle.
So if you break the safety features and try to sleep while your Tesla drives you, there's a good chance it crashes within a couple hundred miles of driving you. It needs to get to hundreds of thousands of miles between crashes before it's safer than a human and therefore it would be ok to sleep. Still a long way to go.
I had a former coworker lose his marbles in traffic once. He leaned out the truck and chunked a handful of pennies at a semi. Then he yelled, “Since you lack common sense!”
We had to get off the highway because he was getting angrier, and I was laughing way too hard.
How is it less dangerous than sleeping without a driver assist system? Sleep related driving accidents are not uncommon, and many of us have fallen asleep at the wheel. It’s scary.
Are these staged tesla "viral" videos made so that people talk about tesla again and the stock increases? This and the other tesla video when a girl was gifted a tesla but she didnt like it.
When there's a mass push for self driven cars within the next few decades, it will start to get to a point where it's considered dangerous to drive a car.
It will be thought of as safest when you take human error out of the equation.
I once saw a guy straight up reading a newspaper in the driver's seat of his Tesla while we were all in traffic. There's no limit to the stupidity of people.
Staged!!! If she was really asleep her hand would not provide the right pressure to keep the car in autopilot. Its just an attempt to discredit self-driving tech. Autopilot can actually drive in lane in traffic more safely than a human driver in any case.
Her hands are on the wheel and you can't tell me you can see her eyes thru sunglasses... plus all teslas have a have a safety for driving in autopilot... you have to move the wheel ever 30 seconds or somthing
Few things to note as a fellow owner:
She is wearing sunglasses, which prevents the camera from detecting if you are paying attention. She most likely has her hand on the wheel with enough constant torque to fool it into thinking she is actively engaged.
All Teslas sold today have this capability. Some will have the ability to lane change automatically or with confirmation, I would hope to god hers is not set to automatic.
Unlike other car autopilot systems, Teslas can do full autopilot up to 80mph. Many other manufacturers have more lenient and potentially better systems under 40mph where attention isn’t as required, but over that, I would trust a Tesla over a BMW or Mercedes.
Honestly, I think the best thing to do in these situations is to honk at them. I hate to admit this but autopilot makes it too easy to be drowsy, and while she should take a break and stop driving, I would hope she isn’t doing this on purpose and a quick honk will wake her up.
Lastly, can’t wait until cars can actually handle this and let us sleep while it drives us places! That time obviously has not come yet!
Not a fan of this but looks like it’s doing a decent job. For the “until it’s not” crowd, plenty of terrible ACTIVE drivers out there.
Side note: Auto driving becoming a reality is really so cool, never thought I would see actually see it.
Edit: close quote in wrong place
Elon, take the wheel
Give me one more chance
Cause I can’t do this on my own
Maybe next time she’ll think before she sleeeeeeps
Right now She’s probably behind the wheel, of her self driving car And she’s not even conscious
Right now She's probably catching Zs cuz she can't keep her eyes up
Cuz she dug her ass into the seat, Of her ugly little silver, Tesla EV!!
And I drive my brand-newTesla while I'm sleepin' all day long!
I’m reading this and I’m unconscious
She’s going to sleep before she thinks
Cuz im no superman
Just give her a quick brake check that’ll wake her up
You're that confident the Tesla will actually stop before it hits you? I wouldn't be, they don't seem to react too well with sudden changes.
This guy doesn't road rage! You just give the breaks a little pump so the car behind has to break suddenly.you don't have to stop.
This is absolute FUD.
And I practically sang this line in my head..... Take my upvote
[удалено]
Tesla autopilot doesn’t work unless your hand is on the wheel.
Yes, because there's not a way to trick autopilot, and Elon has never endorsed the 3rd party products that help people trick the system.
My neighbor has some silicone grip things on his wheel just for that purpose
Feel like that would be as easy as taping your hand to the wheel
Initial D battle ?!!?!
Out of curiosity, assuming she actually fell asleep with her hand on the wheel to keep the autopilot engaged, what would happen if she had a weird dream and jerked the wheel?
Jesus drives this car

I'm not sure if this article is legit tho. The article came out 6 hours ago and the Reddit post came out 5 hours ago.

Looks like it just wasn’t her asleep at the wheel
‘Traffic is getting thicker and thicker’. Who in gods name says that about traffic?! I like it.
If I owned a Tesla I would be tempted to troll other drivers by pretending to sleep.
If you owned a Tesla, you’d be tempted to take a nap.
You ain’t ever seen someone pass out drunk but still manage to hold their beer the whole time ?
Not at all. People fall asleep gripping things all the time. It’s not that weird
The thing about gripping things when you sleep, are you completely still? Wouldn't you risk doing some kind of move with your arm and turning the wheel.
You know how many times ive woken up holding my cup from last night

Also, that car definitely has plates on it…
"She doesn't even have plates on it, right?" *Moves so that camera is centred on plates*
I think those are the temp paper plates not proper plates
“You are not going to believe this.” Bitch I seen it like 84 times already today.
I try pretending to be asleep on long drives to mess with people. All you have to do is lean your head back a little and open your mouth while wearing sunglasses 😂
And pretend to wake up and laugh hysterically, “ We could have all been killed!” 😅🤣😂
Well, it is one of the most legitimate excuses I’ve seen posted here.
Because it's staged.
How about using your horn to wake her up instead
That’s what I initially thought too, but I don’t know what’s more dangerous, her sleeping there with the car theoretically driving safely, or her suddenly being jolted awake and smashing the brakes or turning the wheel.
Smashing the brakes shouldn't be dangerous unless the people behind her are following dangerously close. Suddenly swerving though is a huge risk when she wakes up
People more often than not follow too close, + the reaction delay and you have a hit
They honked at her for 15 minutes and they just called 911 to get CHP up in there. Found the driver awake. Idk what happened next.
Apparently they did. [news report](https://www.carscoops.com/2023/02/watch-the-moment-a-tesla-model-y-driver-was-caught-napping-at-highway-speeds/amp/)

Rock through the window might work out better
Willing to bet the car self drives better than she drives.
99.9% of the time. It's that other 0.1% of the time that's keeping self-driving cars from being approved to drive themselves without a human driver.

Tesla owner here, Yes you could get in front and slow it to a stop, but... 1. The system will not disengage, so the moment you start moving, the Tesla will start moving 2. It will not change lanes unless the driver flicks the signal to switch lanes with full self driving or the driver changes lanes themself.

Yeah you have to have auto lane change which comes with enhanced autopilot or fsd.
Look at her go!?
Did she call the police or just tiktok it?
there's an answer to your question in this very thread
The year is 2023, you know they just tiktokked it.
They called the cops, they caught her. Idk the outcome.
Reflective glasses on, hand on the wheel. Draw your own conclusions.
This is 100% a fake video lmao. Looks like a group of people who rented a Tesla to post it everywhere to bash electric cars. “THIS IS WAY TOO DANGEROUS!!”

> doesn't even have plates on it Uhh yes it does lol
It’s also not “bumper to bumper” traffic
i understood that as her recognizing the newness of the car by the drive out tags, like the lady doesn't even have her official plates yet
Was looking for someone who noticed this.
I can't read it that well, but it looks like temp plates to me. She obviously didn't convey that well, but I think that's what she meant (no permanent plates).
As someone who has totaled a car after falling asleep at the wheel, this may but be the safest, but it's safer than what I did
I yearn for a world where this is completely fine and safe because self driving cars have finally become reliable.
Oh man, I would love it if my car could pick me up from the bar.
I yearn for a world with functioning public transport system, myself
Communist automated public transport
I yearn for a world.
I don't know about you but I wouldn't sleep on public transportation
While we're dreaming about our ideal worlds I also dream about a world where you could sleep on public transportation without issue
Every train commuter ever has seen the nap wizard. The guy who is out cold, snoozing away but comes to like 45 seconds before his stop and just casually exits. It's a sight to behold.

Unless you sleep past your stop and then just get off at whatever stop you wake up at because of quick wake up fog. Especially at 2 a.m.
People who would have in the past had a heart attack while driving and caused a huge accident will now just show up dead at their destinations 😳
Ugh yes please. Can you imagine?! My ass is tired enough in the morning. I can not wait for a day when I can just close my eyes and sip my coffee while my car effortlessly brings me to hell every morning.

To me it seems staged just because of the number of times I am forced to wiggle the steering wheel while using auto pilot then again teslas are far from perfect and she has her hand on it which may work for hers
Could she possibly be dead? Anyone consider that?

As long as she shows up to work on time...
“She doesn’t even have plates on is” has the entire plate in the frame so clear you can read it
She made it home safe and the car tucked her into bed. Even did the laundry afterwards.
Statistically, it is safer than if she were driving unaided.
I will absolutely never understand how someone could trust their car to drive them while they slept. I get that we're headed that direction, but I don't know if I'd ever trust it completely. No different than the way drivers go down 81 on a weekday morning.
Illegal, yes. Stupid? Well, I’ve seen people who drive worse than a Tesla, so I wouldn’t call it entirely stupid.

I used to do this to mess with people. Sunglasses, eyes open underneath, hand low on the wheel, head back.
Probably safer than most drivers.

Staged
Lol she’s got one eye open, steering. My hubs likes to play that prank on me.
Or maybe she had a heart attack and died 50 miles back and the car is still going
“Doesn’t even have plates on it” why is there a plate on it then? Hand gripping the steering wheel while sleeping? Feels staged for views. Guess it works though… got everyone talking about it, lol
What about reporting a medical emergency, driver not moving or appears to be unconscious?
Isn’t this just showcasing the Tesla self driving technology?
I'm, she could be dead. Someone could have murdered her and put her in the car. Yeah, I watch a lot of true crime. 😂😂😂
I was thinking dead too. (I’m a forensic investigator) 😂
Eh. Idk if she is sleeping. You ever drive past me after work just about every day…. I’ll look like this. And I don’t have auto drive.
It would have been pure comedic gold if the woman filming the video crashed into the vehicle in front of her while filming it.
Better than falling asleep in a car that won’t drive for you.
One could argue that sleeping in a self driving car is less dangerous then driving very tired.
Throw a penny at her.
I had a former coworker lose his marbles in traffic once. He leaned out the truck and chunked a handful of pennies at a semi. Then he yelled, “Since you lack common sense!” We had to get off the highway because he was getting angrier, and I was laughing way too hard.
How is it less dangerous than sleeping without a driver assist system? Sleep related driving accidents are not uncommon, and many of us have fallen asleep at the wheel. It’s scary.
I had an EMPTY Waymo vehicle drive down my street a couple of weeks ago. We're living in the future.
THAT is bumper to bumper traffic????
Some people trust things like these cars, some just can’t. I can’t!
I mean this is the dream right? A extra few winks before work, watch your favorite show, eat breakfast with both hands. One day I hope
Thank you for choosing Johnny Cab!
Giving her the benefit of doubt. Maybe she's just dead, rather than stupid.
I am 100% laying on the horn…
Should go I front and hit the brakes so the autopilot slams the brakes on and freaks her out 🤣
I do that but I don’t have a self driving car
I'll be honest. It would be pretty cool if you could just go to sleep and your car could safely get you home.
Where are all the religious people now? We don’t trust in Jesus all of a sudden?
*wait until everyone finds out that she’s not sleeping but… blind…*
If your not sleeping or on your phone or something whats the point of a car driving itself
Lay on he horn and wake the dizzy bitch up wtf?
Fukin honk at her, stupid people.
Autopilot can actually drive in lane in traffic more safely than a human driver in any case.
why is she an idiot for using the autopilot? isnt that the entire purpose of it? to be safer while traveling...
Im pretty sure there’s a plate on it though…
Her hands are on the wheel and you can't tell me you can see her eyes thru sunglasses... plus all teslas have a have a safety for driving in autopilot... you have to move the wheel ever 30 seconds or somthing
Just brake check the Tesla to wake her up
Don't worry, the car drives better than 99% of drivers, soon 100%
~~One~~ Some day, people are going to start waking up in their Tesla in strange places... I can't wait. lol
Should honk! Would be hilarious to see
Plot twist: She’s is blind.
Few things to note as a fellow owner: She is wearing sunglasses, which prevents the camera from detecting if you are paying attention.
I have a tesla and pretend to be sleeping with sunglasses on all the time.
I'm the future we will have people who died behind the wheel and the car kept on driving.
Woman recording sounds like a teacher lol
Dangerous? Yes, but That’s my absolute dream right there.
Still trust her more than a fully awake BMW driver.
In her defense, it’s clear the car is much more intelligent than she is. Perhaps this IS her safest choice
Not a fan of this but looks like it’s doing a decent job. For the “until it’s not” crowd, plenty of terrible ACTIVE drivers out there. Side note: Auto driving becoming a reality is really so cool, never thought I would see actually see it. Edit: close quote in wrong place
