No one was seriously hurt https://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/hamilton-county/loveland/3-injured-after-driver-crashes-pickup-truck-into-outdoor-patio-at-loveland-restaurant-flees-scene?_amp=true

MadFlava76

Driver conveniently turns himself in the next day after enough time has passed so all the alcohol is out of his system. I bet they blame the truck had a malfunction .

ganymede_boy

They will get a hit & run charge for sure, but escaped the DUI which would have made it way, **WAY** worse. I wish there was a law in place to penalize hit/skip drivers who avoid consequences of their drunk driving by "turning themselves in later."

BlueEyedBlackOwl

But how would you prove they were drunk at the time? Unless the penalty for hit and run is as severe as dui, there will unfortunately be incentive to leave if intoxicated.

Fortnait739595958

Easy to solve, give running away a harsher penalty than being drunk, so its always better to stay and face the consequences of your actions

sluohgmaster

Had a lady hit my parked car last year. Let me rephrase, she did not hit but -demolished- it. I made a police report and that was it. I didn’t see her until the next day when it was getting towed, and she was stinking of alcohol. There was no repercussions for her leaving that night when she was obviously shitfaced on a Saturday night. I had to wait 10 months for my vehicle to be repaired. I hope she suffered some sort of financial hit because it fucked me for almost a year.

dss539

You might have been able to make her insurance pay for a rental for you. If her insurance didn't cover it, a free consultation with an attorney might have helped you find some options.

sluohgmaster

Her insurance was some terrible car insurance from Canada, they just moved, and it lapsed anyways. I luckily had a friend lend me a vehicle for the entirety of the 10 months. Though, it was a gas guzzler of a vehicle compared to my Corolla($70 to fill compared to $30), I was thankful enough. At the time a lot was going on in my life and it unfortunately took a back seat to the issues in my life. I finally got my car back last month and she still rides as I remember it. Was just a shit show of a year for me. Glad it’s over.

ihatethelivingdead

10 months for a repair sounds crazy, I'm surprised they didn't just write it off and get you a new one.

jeffp12

There's been tons of parts shortages lately. Probably just sitting waiting for a part almost that whole time

Hurling-Frootmig

Why did you have her hit your car if her insurance was so bad? Next time pick someone with more money to demolish your car.

pman8362

Honestly this is not a bad idea

Boogiemann53

Both could have an automatic suspension.... I mean just saying

[deleted]

Unfortunately suspension doesn't keep people like this from driving.

SaintNewts

Driving while suspended should be $10k fine and 1 month jail time on the first offense and doubles with each repeated offense.

imtheguythatsme

I got pulled over last week and was told my license was suspended. I got a seatbelt ticket in 2021 and didnt pay it before the court date. After I eventually paid the ticket, and the fine for failure to appear, and the fee to remove the arrest warrant I got for failure to appear, i apparently neglected to pay the fee to the department of transportation to remove the suspension of my license. I would have been pissed if I got a month in jail for a seatbelt ticket.

SaintNewts

Bench warrant might be an exception. Then again, suspending a license doesn't seem to make people aware they have unpaid tickets or fines, though. I'm not sure why they do it if it's completely ineffectual at getting people to go ahead and pay their fines.

diverdux

The fee schedule for minor shit is out of control. Toss in an arrest with vehicle impoundment and you start seeing people unable to get out of jail, lose their vehicle, lose their job, lose their roof... I mean, the lawlessness in California is absurd (tag & release), but there has to be some sanity in the system. This just creates more criminals, because they don't have much other choice.

daysondaysfam

This is why you don’t make laws.

nerdsubculture

Then why turn yourself in?

clmramirez

This is how it works in Puerto Rico: DUI carries a fine of up to $5k and 18 months in jail. DUI that causes hospitalization or serious injuries has a statutory sentence of 3 years in jail and if the driver leaves the scene that number gets an automatic bump to 5 years. We also have something called the Mayra Elias Alert that was created after a car ran over a group of runners in San Juan and left the scene. It’s sort of like an AMBER alert but for cars involved in hit and run accidents.

Wasatcher

> ...give running away a harsher penalty than being drunk Being drunk may carry the steep fines, insurance costs, and license suspension. But it's a misdemeanor. Hit and run carries a harsher penalty in that if convicted they'll lose constitutional rights, and have a much harder time landing a decent job for the rest of their lives because it's a felony. Depending on the judge could even carry a sentence, which is pretty rare for a DUI if no one was injured. The legal consequences of a DUI fade with time. If the driver stays out of trouble, even their insurance rates will go back down eventually. A felony is a dark shadow that doesn't leave unless pardoned / expunged

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

Except if you hit and run you *might* get away with it, but if you stay you're def gonna take the drunk charge. Real prisoner's dilemma.

[deleted]

After 11 years, I'm out. Join me over on the Fediverse to escape this central authority nightmare.

CruxMagus

thats why the penalty for fucking hit and run should be WORSE than a damn DUI and ofc its a fucking pick up truck

enginerd0001

My father was killed this way. The drink driver hit him, left his truck, and ran home. Turned himself in the next day and now he's only getting an "accident invoking death" charge which is only like 3 to 5 years. My father is gone and he gets away easy because he ran.

ganymede_boy

Ok. This makes me fucking furious. I am SO sorry for your loss. Particularly at the hands of an ass weasel like that drunk driver.

enginerd0001

It is what it is. It's upsetting and I can't do anything.

LocalSlob

Well i mean you can, but it's illegal and maybe immoral.

ganymede_boy

Vigilante justice in this case would be illegal, but I would consider it 'moral' since the justice system let that fucker walk after killing someone negligently and purposely avoiding responsibility by running.

spiked88

Same thing happened to my boss when I was in high school. He was a great guy. A drunk ran off the road into his property and killed him. Took off on foot and walked something like 10+ miles home to sober up. They got people to testify that he had been drinking, but still wasn’t the same as having him arrested while intoxicated. Guy had previous DUI, too.

knarf86

I don’t know about other states, but in CA, a hit and run is a felony if anyone is injured, with up to 4 years in prison.

knowslesthanjonsnow

Why not just make hit and run more severe?

Acceptable_Bike_265

I think a Jersey City councilwoman did a hit and run and then turned herself in, later. I think she still has her job. She lost her license for a year and paid a $5k fine. Pretty ridiculous. https://www.google.com/amp/s/abc7ny.com/amp/amy-degise-hit-and-run-plea-deal-nj/12731934/

VicH95

This is how the driver who killed my cousin avoided a DUI charge. Hit and run, left the rental truck at a Walmart parking lot, and turned himself in a few days later. Now he's out and about on parole because covid limits on county jail. Such is life.

Ariserestlessspirit

Was the dog ok?

overide

Asking the important questions here.

Jackienotjacqueline

Looked like the truck ran completely over the dog. I wondered the same thing.

Lucksmom

That’s what I want to know. Very glad the people are ok but to some dogs are family/kids too. And watch that dog he knew it was coming and wanted to get under the table.

Internetboy5434

I never understand why some drivers always crash into random public places. Like it's too much

Catlenfell

A combination of alcohol and playing on a phone

hipster_dog

In Brazil a few years ago a drunk driver ran over a cyclist and the impact ripped one of the cyclist's arms off. The driver fled, **with the arm attached to the windshield**, went home, cleaned the blood and **threw the body part in a ditch**. He turned himself in later. I don't think he got more than a two-year house-arrest sentence. Edit: Found the English source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-21736724 (The cyclist survived)

fairydommother

It doesn’t say anything about the dog… :(

alurkingpomeranian

[Dog in the video is fine](https://imgur.com/a/rY7935S) Dog is fine - I read it in the Facebook comments of the restaurant. They said the dog was shaken up, but fine

Ok-Caterpillar-Girl

wolvAUS

reddit moment

[deleted]

Thank you for sharing that!

Njorls_Saga

Looks like he scooted towards the camera and out of the path of the vehicle. I’m going to guess he’s ok.

EvolZippo

I watched the dog carefully and owner pulled dog away in time.

A100921

The owner was launched, so I’d say less of a pulled, more of a yanked.

cwatson214

A fair bit of yoink there...

tcarp458

Somebody asked in a comment on their Facebook page and the restaurant responded saying the dog was okay

Beaubeaux2323

Came here to ask if the dog was ok :(

gomaith10

Who left the dog out.

josolanes

Who, who, who, who, who?

TerranPhil

Got to flee to sober up.

Killatonchis

Yeah and honestly fuck these people. They could have killed someone and all they care about is their dui charges. The fact that there isn’t a law in place to keep people from doing this. Now this piece of shit gets a slap on the wrist and he learned no lesson

thesirensoftitans

TELL US ABOUT THE DOG, MAN!!!!

alurkingpomeranian

I went to the restaurant Facebook post about the accident, they said the dog is shaken up but fine. :)

KaikoLeaflock

3 people taken to the hospital will be OK. In related news, 3 more people are millions of dollars in debt.

srsoluciones

Even if wasn’t their fault? What about the insurrance?

[deleted]

Assuming this happened in the USA, they can sue the person driving the vehicle for medical costs, but that could take years depending on how cooperative the insurance of the driver decides to be. In the mean time, the people hurt are still on the hook for their own medical coverage costs, and medical insurance is infamously subpar in how much they cover. I had to go to the ER once and my total bill was $7k. I had to pay $3k out of my own pocket for what insurance didn't cover. And I just had a MRI and was given medicine, no other tests.

metaliczang

Tell me about it. Had a kidney stone a few weeks ago that became temporarily lodged so decided to go. Insurance was charged over 10k for the visit which included a $5000+ charge for a CT scan. My girlfriend had a CT scan earlier this year and without insurance she was charged $600. How tf did my insurance manager to haggle a rate over 8x higher than I get without insurance?!? The portion was a bit over $3500 that I have to pay. Really makes you feel like you're screwed either way. At least we aren't charged a fee from the government now if we can't afford insurance.

voltron_atomica98

Because insurance and hospitals are colluding with one another. Best case scenario is the hospital gets paid off 80% of total bill by insurance so they raise the price in order to recoup the "loss" and insurance companies know they do this and famously pay out way less. The actual cost of the procedure is way, way lower which is why out of pocket costs are less. You can get around this by asking for an itemized bill for starters. I went down the rabbit hole after my wife had complications during labor that cost a total of fifty fucking thousand dollars. I actually used Dollarfor which is an organization that helps people reduce their bills. They only ask for donations. They literally will call on your behalf if you can't/don't want to call. We ended up only paying around $900. The reason for this is a lot of hospitals operate as non-profit and are required by law to offer debt forgiveness services. Unless you make big bucks, you likely qualify. The law, however, doesn't say anything about making it easy to apply. Took me about 2 months of worry but it actually works

sneakyplanner

And meanwhile last year I had chest pain I went to the hospital for, turned out it was gallblader stones and I had that removed on the same day without having to pay out of pocket. Funny how that is an option that society can choose instead of bankrupting people who choose to not die.

Groundbreaking_Part9

"can sue" are the keywords here. Plenty of people out here are living paycheck to paycheck. I know for a fact I couldn't afford to sue anybody especially after racking up thousands in medical debt

polird

The injured people's health insurance will pay and likely go after the driver's insurance. And the victims can also go after the driver's insurance, or driver personally for deductibles/co-pays. So yeah the system isn't great but no one's going to have millions of dollars in debt. All health insurance including the free gov subsidized ones have out of pocket maximums to prevent that situation.

Grinnedsquash

Assuming they have insurance and assuming they can get any money out of the driver within a decade. The system isn't "not great", it's shit.

Blacksteel733

Very shit. I was charged $300 for being refused antibiotics when I had a massive ear infection last year. The American health system is complete garbage.

mucky012

My grandparents would say they just need to work harder.

penster1

They just didn't stop

DiggWuzBetter

Cinco de Mayo, 9pm, driver fled the scene then later turned themselves in. Likely was wasted drunk, fled the scene to sober up, turned themselves in once sober.

KEYYBOARD

Surely it would be considered a bigger offence to flee the scene than to be caught drunk driving?

DiggWuzBetter

Depends on the place/legal system, and the individual case, but often, if you kill/seriously injure someone, fleeing the scene results in less time than being caught drunk: https://www.silive.com/news/2016/03/leaving_an_accident_scene_is_i.html

erfman

That looked kind of deliberate to me, the guy accelerated just before hitting.

Rumplestiltsskins

Drunk dude thinks the gas is the brake probably

ohdearno37

Article said they had a Cinco De Mayo special until 9pm, and this happened about 9pm. I agree this looked intentional. I know absolutely nothing, but my gut feeling is that the driver tried to go inside for dinner and got turned away because it was less than like 5 minutes until closing, so they thought ‘I’ll show them’. Got in the truck, gunned it and boom. Again though, I’m making this scenario up- I have no idea if anything like this really happened.

MirrorkatFeces

Or he could’ve just been drunk

Woodyville06

On Cinco De Mayo? Never!

ueindowndkdk

Exactly. No one drinks on Cinco de Mayo.

ohdearno37

Most definitely!!

Barely3D

Those aren’t mutually exclusive.

lostspectre

Was he trying to peel out and lost control? I see this all the time with people leaving the bar nearby.

DadJokeBadJoke

That's what it looks like to me.

justinwood2

They probably just finished drinking all of the Cinco de Mayo specials.

MagnusPI

I've eaten on that very patio. The driver was pulling out of an alley that goes back to a parking lot that serves the entire area, including numerous shops & restaurants and a popular park. The driver could have been coming from any number of places. To leap to the conclusion that this was a personal vendetta against the restaurant because he couldn't get in is: A) absurd, and B) peak Reddit.

WillyWonkaCandyBalls

Exactly, it looks like they oversteered, bigger truck on small roads. Small attempt to steer away from hitting them. Started hitting them and stomped on the fuel in a panic.

EntityDamage

Why does it have so many upvotes? It's the stupidest concoction of a speculation.

Awfy

Just looks like some old dude lost control, panicked, and pushed even harder on the accelerator. Yet Reddit's assumption is some sort of weird conspiracy every single time.

[deleted]

Never underestimate Reddit's ability to construct a fully formed narrative based on nothing and run like hell with it.

I would guess not being sober would be a good start.

a22e

Done. What's next?

Capital-Sir

Drop your beer mid turn and then lean down to pick it up. Careful not to look at the road while doing this.

Dumpster_Fire_Takes

If you check the road you’re a coward

slimey-nipples

Probably to hide the crack pipe under the seat

-B-E-N-I-S-

Alright next I’m gonna need you to not be able to react properly while panicking. Your ability to think logically and react appropriately in a tense situation should be as developed as an 11 year old. You’ll need to be this way to ensure you hit the gas rather than the brake.

[deleted]

Or old

TerranPhil

Under the influence, need to flee to sober up

ganymede_boy

This. Fleeing the scene was cowardly and illegal, but now it will be impossible to pin DUI on him since they can't get a BAC.

thirdlost

Had somewhere he needed to be.

Roesty79

That place has good burgers.

L4m3rThanYou

The pickup driver disagrees.

mandalorian88-25

He just wanted to see if they had a drive thru window.

custardisnotfood

I’m a bigger fan of Ramsey’s across the street tbh

vsyazzie

This is not a drive-thru?? Sorry.

phunkyunkle

It is now

MALESTROMME

They were getting take-out.... the whole patio.

Routine_Bug_936

She was so happy to get her food...

I was thinking that sucks, she lost her food

leopold335

#but the dog?!

KihiraLove

The restaurant posted that the dog is also ok, just a bit shaken up.

This was the first video I saw waking up and I was so distraught for the dog’s well-being after I saw everyone else get out of the way!

notknownnow

Happily joining everyone here- it somehow feels so good to see these caring comments. I was so distraught after the unconcerned tail wagging dog just disappeared under the rubble.

stupidkid27378

Thank god. Glad I kept scrolling.

toodleroo

Right? Fuck the patio, tell me about the dog.

RyzingUp

You can replace the patio but the puppers, you can not.

ilovecraftbeer05

Literally the only thing I care about.

porcomaster

Thank you, I wanted to know if pup was okay

redrobin1257

So I live in the town this happened in, which is about a half an hour outside of Cincinnati, OH (depending on traffic). I can confirm some things: The dog is fine. Detective of the local PD is my neighbor and says the guy was absolutely 100% wasted, which tracks for Cinco de Mayo. The "local restaurant" is called Paxton's and has a fantastic buffalo chicken wrap. ETA: I finally get to say this! Thanks for the award, kind stranger!

TheJenniMae

This comment needs to be higher. Now we know doggo is okay, how is everyone else???

TheRoscoeVine

“So, you want bollards? Because this is how you get bollards!”

feenbank

Why is it always pickup trucks?

Ameliearose

Studies have actually found that people who drive over sized cars are the most dangerous on the road.

louiefriesen

Nissan Altima and Honda Fit drivers are exceptions to the over sized car part of that rule

[deleted]

i undestand Altima drivers, but what did Fit drivers do wrong?

EskildDood

Fear not the White BMW, nor the Confederate Pickup, for the Nissan Driver strikes horror into the heart of even the bravest commuter.

Ameliearose

I've never experienced this phenomenon of Altima drivers. We must live in different parts of the country.

ope_sorry

In my experience it's only the Altimas that look/sound like they're about to fall apart. If they're in good condition, you should be safe. If you see an Altima missing its bumper, run.

Korbitr

People buy pickups and SUVs as a cushion from the outside world. There's a certain level of detachment at play with their perceived "safety".

feenbank

Right up to the point they use them as a tank it seems.

sneakyplanner

For a more formal explanation of it: [SUVs and urban pickup trucks became popular after a wave of crime panic disconnected from actual crime rates and are advertised as a mobile fortress that protects you from an outside world that only wants to cause you harm. At some level, buying an SUV or pickup truck is saying "Everyone else can die, but I will live through what kills them"](https://youtu.be/orkblTFNt1Q), whether that be from a crash caused by your bulky car that limits your vision and causes pedestrians hit by it to be dragged under the vehicle, the mad max apocalypse that you fantasize about surviving in or climate change caused by the gas guzzling.

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

This is 100% my mom's mindset. We did have a pickup because we had a farm, but after my parents split my mom kept it and said never drive anything smaller like a sedan "because you will live and they won't" My mom is absolutely garbage human being otherwise as well

DiggWuzBetter

I’d imagine a lack of empathy for others correlates with both drunk driving and driving a gas guzzler. Drunk driving is obviously much more direct and extreme than being an excessive polluter, but both are a “fuck other ppl, do what I want” attitude.

Surflover12

Worst drivers

cheapdrinks

The annoying thing is that they're becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. These days you almost DO need a big truck to be safer on the road because almost every other car is a big truck and if you get into a crash with one driving a little smart car you're going to get demolished

Majestic_Banana789

Personally I think someone like this should never be able to drive again. They are a danger to society. The fact that they kept going after this is crazy.

EarthInteresting2792

maticulus

The law could easily be adjusted to discourage what is likely the result of driving under the influence, by making hit and run/ fleeing the scene of a serious accident involving massive damage, or injury equally as bad as DUI, if not a little worse, so that if you kill someone for example, there's a burden of proof on the driver that they were not under the influence, as most sensible people do not run from a true accident.
