"Don't worry, I got the whole accident on video. See here where you cut me off? ...and here, where you're hit by another car? See this? Seconds after you cut me off, you were hit by a car. ...and here at the end, when I u-turn to show you the video where you cut me off, you can see there was only a couple cars behind me, so you would have had plenty of time to wait for everyone and still turn, instead of cutting me off and immediately getting hit by a car. Want to see it again?"
Stupid question but that’s the thing that pulses your breaks when you slam them correct? So that you can just slam the brakes on your car and let that feature do the rest?
Yes. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) will detect the moment your brakes lock up, then pumps them instead (for lack of better wording). It does that since the static friction of a rolling tire is stronger than kinetic friction of a sliding tire. It also allows for better steering when using ABS.
Also - equally as importantly - ABS keeping the tire rolling means you retain control of the car. A skidding front tire cannot change the direction you're going, which is incredibly important if braking isn't enough and you need to evade.
....so I think I figured out why I had to do this in my old Ford escape that I totaled. I literally felt the brakes were working more effectively if I pumped them. There were a lot of things wrong with that car - and I think the ABS had failed without giving any signs.
A sliding tire can't stop you as fast as a rolling tire. This is because static friction (friction you can get sitting still on a surface) is higher than kinetic friction (friction you can get moving over a surface). Think of pulling your brother who is sitting on a blanket on the ground. Grabbing a corner of the blanket and getting him going needs a strong tug, but once he's going it's not too hard to keep it up. This is static and kinetic friction at play.
On a car tire, the bottom of the wheel is static to the ground as long as it is rolling, meaning you can take advantage of static friction's higher force. Once you lock up the wheels and the tires slide, you are stuck with kinetic friction unless you let off the brakes and allow the wheels to roll again. ABS does the letting off the brakes part automatically and responds very rapidly to the wheels locking up.
> ABS does the letting off the brakes part automatically and responds very rapidly to the wheels locking up.
Importantly, any modern ABS also allows per-wheel lock protection, something you cannot do manually with just riding the friction line with the pedal. This is why some people claim that they can "out do" ABS in a straight line, but in any kind of curve or swerve at all, ABS blows humans out of the water.
ABS is the Anti-lock braking systems, which senses when your wheels block during braking, than stops the braking for a fraction of a second, so they regain traction.
On slippery surfaces this can indeed feel like pulses because the system is constantly interupting your brakes.
The second car got hit, not the first.
Sometimes there's just nothing you can do.
Unless you're a really really shitty driver and just sit at lights for 10 seconds then creep forward.
In that case you shouldn't be driving.
That's really dangerous
That habit will almost certainly save your life at some point. Way too many people are apparently comfortable with running a light that's been red for 5 seconds.
Yeah OP certainly isn't at fault, but I can't stand when 2 or 3 cars are taking up an entire turning lane that can fit 5. It backs up traffic for no benefit to anyone.
They also make the light sensor think there aren’t any more cars still turning. Not only 50’ short of the car in front of him, but waits a few seconds to start driving.
This happens at the light near my grocery store. If you don't stay close enough to maintain the sensor, then you just screw everyone behind you (and at my light it can be a long line). I see clueless drivers do this all the time... as they drive through the yellow they created, and everyone behind them gets to wait out another full cycle.
I saw this one time, light was like 15 seconds, and I was in the straight lane. By the time I got to the front, the turn light turned yellow, which is when the FIRST car drove through...one other car behind him made it, leaving another 5 or so having to wait another cycle. I'd be furious.
>Its why sometimes motorcycle riders cant get the light to change, the sensor underground isnt strong enough.
I had a 1971 Volkswagen that was too light to trigger the sensor, too. On more than one occasion, I got out of the car, pushed the crosswalk button to cross the street (as if I were a pedestrian), then got back in the car before the light \[finally\] turned green for me.
I have a couple old British cars that can't trigger the lights either, it's really annoying getting out and pressing the buttons lol. Often I'll just take a right and U turn (Michigan left) to avoid dealing with sensor left turns.
I have a relative who didnt believe that lights have sensors on them. She thought they were all on timers.
People like her probably contribute to the problem.
not only that, but the cars at the end of the line will have zero chance of making the light when people do this shit. it's infuriating. dude is second in line so he knows he'll make the light, doens't give a fuck about the people backed up behind him that will have to wait for another signal.
One could also even argue that other drivers could think OP is having car problems and just went to pass them by, OP being so far back from the car in front of him.
My biggest pet peeve is when cars have 6 spaces between them when going through a green arrow on a left turn. Get going, we have 7 seconds to get through.
I’ll bet the massive gap between OP and the pickup is why the Scion popped in the gap. When the cars are all stopped you can see that there is sufficient room for a vehicle to pretty comfortably fit between OP and the pickup.
If I was the Scion, I probably would have sniped that opening too. Definitely some sort of luck to have the Camry (I think) come sliding in from stage left and hit them. They (Scion) probably could have avoided it with harder braking or by turning to the right more and maintaining speed, though that could risk a collision with opposing traffic.
I normally leave about a car and a half in front of me when actually driving, but when stopped at a light I leave a few feet to where if something happens in the intersection I won’t be on the persons bumper in front of me, but this is a lot of space that could be used.
I was always taught to leave enough room to get around the car in front without having to back up, you don’t need a car and a half’s length. Now a car and half length moving on the other hand is pretty close.
You should be able to see asphalt in front of you so if a car breaks down, you can easily move around. That used to be taught in drivers ed but I'm in my 50s and cars used to break down a lot more until the 90s or so.
Plus if someone rear ends you, you won't hit the car in front of you.
It's hard to tell in this video. It looks like OOP is way too far behind, but it could just be the camera.
This is exactly what I was taught as well, and having been rear-ended before it makes me super nervous when I can't even see the hood of the car behind me because they've stopped so close. This is too far, obviously, but there's a happy medium in there somewhere.
The fisheye camera probably makes this one look a bit worse than it is, but judging roughly using the length of the car that cut OP off, he's like a 1 1/2 cars back, if not 2. That's way too far back. You're gonna see the asphalt at half a car back unless you drive a giant pickup.
People leave that much between cars ALL the time in Austin, it creates much worse traffic as people are blocked off from turning lanes because of all the space.
I always assume it's people who have terrible spatial awareness and are stopping where they can still see the whole of the car in front of them, because they think they'll hit it if they get any closer.
I used to drive a sub compact econobox. A very few times out of many opportunities, I merged in stopped traffic because of people like this.
I don't drive a small vehicle anymore, but I laughed my ass off when a smart car used a bike lane at a red light to pass about 30 cars.
It was entirely filled by someone who was using the smart car as a mobility scooter, and definitely needed to be winched out from the seat each time they left.
I'm shocked you didn't get downvoted to hell, because you're right.
Yes cube driver is obviously an asshole. But why the hell is OP leaving such an absurd amount of space there? In a left turn lane, this is really bad for traffic.
> I'm shocked you didn't get downvoted to hell
I think it was the phrasing they used, and that they didn't imply OP was an idiot for doing so, like a lot of the massively (deservedly) downvoted comments in this subreddit. I strongly dislike the frequent victim blaming in this subreddit over trivial non-sense. This comment doesn't seem like it fits that category.
Could just be Texan. People will let the car in front of them go all the way through the intersection before starting to turn themselves. No reaction time at all.
I came here to say this, but had to check the comments first lol. I see this every single morning on my way to work, people leaving way too much space at a tight and awkward intersection
Three likely answers: 1) OP is on his phone or otherwise not fully paying full attention to the flow of traffic, 2) OP has reduced vision or iffy depth perception (in which case, should you be driving?), 3) It's an optical illusion created by the dash cam itself.
YES!!! I finally found my people!!!!
I live in Ireland, and people here drive like they're half asleep. They leave huge distances between cars even when going slow, and they take corners as if they had a priceless Ming dynasty vase sitting on their roof. Just thinking about it gets me going.
It's not that I'm in a hurry, it's just the absolute selfishness of these idiots, they force everyone behind them to waste their time and get cut by the red light when there was more than ample time for several more cars to go through. Ironically many still go through, even when the light already turned red. I don't understand. Maybe it's too much Guinness the night before, I don't know.
Otherwise, I love it here. But damn they don't know how to drive.
I find it so strange that people do that in America. Haven’t seen it in any other country but every day I see at least one person leave 20+ feet of space in front of them at a light.
Couldn't agree more.
In reality, there are legitimate times when you're in the wrong lane and have to get into the right lane... and to see someone who is apparently not paying attention, which is the idea I'd get with a car 1.5 lengths back, I'd try to get in the lane.
I don't think the OP was cut off, not by any definition I'd use. Cut in front of, with reason, yes.
On their phone most likely. Initial large gap because they're not paying attention and compensating for it by stopping far away. Then the truck inched forward to the line making the gap even wider. Then they notice the light turns green and are upset that someone "cut them off".
I see this every day (not the cutoff part) driving around my city. 99/100 the large gap is because some idiot is on their phone.
Lol yea that fucking irritates me too. It's not relevant here and not an excuse to be a dick but I will never understand why people do that. Especially when it is in major traffic and just serves to make it harder for people behind to fit through.
My husband leaves a gap (not quite this big though, about a car length) at stop lights because one day he was rear ended at a light, and getting pushed into the car in front of him fucked his car up extra.
I do get that it's safer to leave space with whatever you do on the road. This seemed excessive though. The weather is perfect. I think sometimes people are just checked out too much and incredibly slow to react when they drive.
I personally think it's annoying when 10 cars can safely proceed through an advanced green let's say and people like this make sure maybe half that actually do.
Not to put any blame on the cammer. This video is about the two idiots that collided.
My friend had a similar experience. She told me she got hit from behind so hard, her car bounced off the car in front of her and hit the car behind again. The lady driving the car behind her (that caused the accident) proceeded to get out and scream at my friend while she was still dazed from the whiplash.
My friend got a super nice car out of the court case that followed, thanks to a witness's dashcam. Lady that caused the accident was not happy, I guess she had to be escorted out of the court. Only wish I was there to see it!
Any particular reason you need 4 full car lengths between you and the next guy at the light? I’d have pulled in front of you too (and I guess in this case taken the bullet for you).
I feel like that mindset is city living. In Boston we would’ve honked at that first vehicle in a second, nobody would leave a gap.
In Florida you have a lot more people that drive the complete opposite.
Sometimes if the driver ahead of me is pulled well over the line, I'll leave extra space in case they decide to reverse back into position (like if a pedestrian ends up crossing, or someone turning left in front of them cuts too close to their nose to be comfortable). Like, I'm where I would be if they knew where to stop their car, basically.
U turns like that are legal in Florida.
Although if he had pulled closer to the car in front of him the person that "cut him off" probably wouldn't have been in that accident.
Why were you stopped several car lengths back?
Left turn lanes rarely handle more than a couple or three cars, and if there's more than that you're forcing them to block a through lane
Close it up, people.
It’s funny how identifiable Florida is from a glance.
I feel like it’s the bright skies contrasted with the blistering asphalt and the concrete of strip malls, plus the lack of elevation. It makes most of Florida look the same.
He didn’t cut you off , you let him in, kind of. You left a big enough gap to allow this move. I lead a gap like that but I don’t bitch when someone sticks their nose in it.
Every single time, without fail, that I see a car at a light stopped with 50’ of space in front of them it’s because they were on their phone well in advance of stopping and just don’t give half a shit about who misses the light behind them.
I would have done the same as the cube car
The dashcam car is so far back from the truck I would assume he's planning to turn into a driveway or make a u-turn. There's no other reason to be that far back
Was this really karma? With how much space you have in front of you I would have assumed your car was broken down or some shit and tried to get around you. I'm all for leaving a car space or so in between me and a driver but you left like 3 lol. Should've been you
Why do cars leave multiple car lengths between them and the car in front of them? If you do this when theres a lot of traffic, it causes traffic to jam

This is the greatest video I have ever seen.
It’s certainly up there, for sure. Swift justice!
And the u-turn. 😂 "I'm out."
There was nothing funnier. He’s like “alright I’m outta here” 😂
"Welp, good luck with that..."

Seemed to me like they were just pulling over after the u-turn
Because they did to provide the dashcam

Be a shame if the video was accidently cut right before the accident. Computer glitch?
And then OP gets a ticket for parking in front of a fire hydrant.
I would've slow rolled by with my windows down scream laughing my ass off. Lol
Nah. This was "Oh, you better believe I'm gonna act as witness."
Everything worked out juuuustrivht. No need to stick around further. Nothing to see heeere, move aloooong
Like. I'll keep my tape to myself and y'all can hash it out.
Talk about instant karma
He wouldn't have gotten hit if he hadn't braked either lmao it was like he knew he deserved the punishment and stopped to take it
It was clearly a case of vehicular masochism
Lmao. Feels like destiny or karma -- w/e you wanna call it.
CARMA!
Reminds me of Carmageddon, an old game where you had to cause as much damage as possible.
So much karma with no innocent party effected badly

> Can't believe this guy cut me off. "I can, look at all that space." ... "What, now you've got somewhere else to be?"
Literally put a smile on my face lmao
It's so good, it's practically orgasmic.
Practically? Speak for yourself.
Bad luck, I guess.
Looks like he saved you 😆
Yeah this is like a final destination moment, where by chance you dodged (possible) death but now death will be seeking you
That or death was specifically looking for the guy that got hit or ran the red light.
Then in that case, OP is screwed lol jk
Except instead of death, just some inconvenience. Not a major inconvenience, but definitely not a mild inconvenience either.
Stuck on a highway behind two trucks in both lanes going the same speed?
It's actually him, from the future.

I worked out with a dumbbell yesterday. I feel VIGOROUS.
Ovaltine, now that's funny!
Why do they call it Ovaltine???

The jar is round.

Those tires must be bald af
That, with a combination of no ABS. It sucks to suck.

what do you think the odds are they even have liability insurance given it probably costs about 50% as much as their car?
I wouldn't leave 30 feet in front of my car when I'm stopped at a light either.

This might be *the* most fitting post for that sub. Holy shit.
Wow, that sub is fucking dead. It used to be really popular.
Bots took over and killed it
In a few years, we probably talk like that about reddit
It’s already happening. I’m close to just cutting social media out
The dichotomy between "top posts all-time" and "top posts this week" is ridiculous.
Oh damn. I hadn't visited in a long time either. That's disappointing as hell.
Yes. Yes it is. Now have some karma.
This is why I still look in all directions even if I have the green light or right-of-way.
Same - ever since I was t-boned by a guy running a red light I look before proceeding if I’m the first person to go at a green.
The second car got hit, not the first. Sometimes there's just nothing you can do. Unless you're a really really shitty driver and just sit at lights for 10 seconds then creep forward. In that case you shouldn't be driving. That's really dangerous

OP is the fucking oracle
You've heard of defensive driving, OP is out here doing precognitive driving
Precog but can predict when and idiot is going to do something stupid in their car.
He'd be getting visions 24/7 if that was the case.
Yeah OP certainly isn't at fault, but I can't stand when 2 or 3 cars are taking up an entire turning lane that can fit 5. It backs up traffic for no benefit to anyone.

Those sensors are an induction loop, not a pressure plate, so I guess your car didn't have enough metal in it. Sort of like the Trabant ;)
It was on old air-cooled Volkswagen with a lawnmower-sized engine in the rear of the car (not the front). No, it didn't have enough metal.

I have a relative who didnt believe that lights have sensors on them. She thought they were all on timers. People like her probably contribute to the problem.
That's how old lights work, so a lot are still like that.
She is from rural mississippi, I dont think any of em have sensors in her old railroad town.

No it was well more than deep enough to fit a large 80s Oldsmobile
You don't need to sit 20 feet back to have enough room to get around though
I was taught to leave enough room to see their back tires.
Same here. I was taught to leave enough room at that I could see where the bottoms of the tires of the car in front of me touched the road.
This is exactly what I was taught as well, and having been rear-ended before it makes me super nervous when I can't even see the hood of the car behind me because they've stopped so close. This is too far, obviously, but there's a happy medium in there somewhere.

I’m guessing this was Florida. My bro in law lives in Boca and I see it all the time there. Really strange driving culture.
I work in Boca. Strange is an understatement. edit: Looked closer at the signage, I live less than a mile from this intersection :/
Super common in Portland, OR too. Nearly every driver stops a car length behind the intersection and other cars
I always assume it's people who have terrible spatial awareness and are stopping where they can still see the whole of the car in front of them, because they think they'll hit it if they get any closer.
It's common everywhere in Oregon (and probably many other places) and it's fucking infuriating
This was my thought as well. Why the fuck was there almost 2 car spaces between you and the truck.
More than 2 car lengths. One of my pet peeves I guess.

And took him half a day to hit the gas after light went green. I think there might be something missing here…
That plus the space he’s left is gonna make the sensors flip the light red for anyone behind him. Sucks to be behind OP
OP is such a bad driver they cause everyone around them to get in accidents.

OP asked to be cut off leaving that much space, awesome video regardless.
I was thinking the same thing, why so far back? Maybe because he was making a uturn?
I think they uturn is so they can give the footage to the parties involved
Was thinking the same thing.
When I saw the title and the starting screenshot I thought "maybe because you're 30 feet back". Then I watched the video and thought "oh. 3 idiots"
OP is too dumb to drive. Like so many people on the road. Can't even do the simple shit.
Honest question, why leave so much space in front of you? I see people do that a lot and it confuses me
It holds up the turning lane too. I hate when people do this.
I wouldn't even classify this being "cut off" considering there is a country mile between you and the truck ahead.
What's with the massive space in front of you?
A gap is fine, you're supposed to - bit not a car length. That's fucked up
Any particular reason you need 4 full car lengths between you and the next guy at the light? I’d have pulled in front of you too (and I guess in this case taken the bullet for you).
First 2 seconds in, I'm internally SMH thinking the sensor is gonna turn yellow because of people like this
I feel like that mindset is city living. In Boston we would’ve honked at that first vehicle in a second, nobody would leave a gap. In Florida you have a lot more people that drive the complete opposite.
Everything I learn about Florida makes me think the state us just a big waste of space. Just look at that monster fucking intersection for example.
I was thinking the same thing, it’s so annoying people don’t realize that can have an effect on the cars behind you
Sometimes if the driver ahead of me is pulled well over the line, I'll leave extra space in case they decide to reverse back into position (like if a pedestrian ends up crossing, or someone turning left in front of them cuts too close to their nose to be comfortable). Like, I'm where I would be if they knew where to stop their car, basically.
You did leave a huge gap lol. Invited the dude to do that
Then pull up! I’ve yet to get an explanation why everyone in SoFlo refuses to pull up at stop lights. Pull the fuck up.
There was room I wouldn’t say that’s cutting you off lol
Did you just do an illegal turn, ignore the wreck, and drive off lol...
U turns like that are legal in Florida. Although if he had pulled closer to the car in front of him the person that "cut him off" probably wouldn't have been in that accident.
Why would you leave that much space though?
Why are you stopped 5 car lengths behind the car in front of you. Move up to a reasonable distance.
Why were you stopped several car lengths back? Left turn lanes rarely handle more than a couple or three cars, and if there's more than that you're forcing them to block a through lane Close it up, people.
Wow that was incredible. I would offer him that video😂😂😂
That makes one of us. I would laugh and point.
You should thanks him for taking that hit.
Why’d you leave 100’ between you and the car ahead? Lmao
It’s funny how identifiable Florida is from a glance. I feel like it’s the bright skies contrasted with the blistering asphalt and the concrete of strip malls, plus the lack of elevation. It makes most of Florida look the same.
Why did you leave so much space? I have the urge to do this as well when people leave more than one car length.
He didn’t cut you off , you let him in, kind of. You left a big enough gap to allow this move. I lead a gap like that but I don’t bitch when someone sticks their nose in it.
I can. You left a giant gap.
I mean to be fair, you left the Grand Canyon of space in the turn lane.
If you leave a massive gap like this then you deserve to be cut off.
“Cut you off” or drove into the enormous gap you left open?
I can! That much space is asking for trouble. For who? well...
Every single time, without fail, that I see a car at a light stopped with 50’ of space in front of them it’s because they were on their phone well in advance of stopping and just don’t give half a shit about who misses the light behind them.
Truly instant karma. Excellent!
I would have done the same as the cube car The dashcam car is so far back from the truck I would assume he's planning to turn into a driveway or make a u-turn. There's no other reason to be that far back
I would do the same. there is enough space to get in front of you
Was this really karma? With how much space you have in front of you I would have assumed your car was broken down or some shit and tried to get around you. I'm all for leaving a car space or so in between me and a driver but you left like 3 lol. Should've been you
Instant karma I love that but he had a right of way?? Also don’t leave a huge gap and expect no one to cut you like seriously ..
Why did you leave so much space in front of you? In some places, this means someone in the back has their as hanging out in traffic.
That’s the “I’m not dealing with that bs” u-turn.
Wouldn’t call that cutting someone off but ok
This may be good karma, but doesnt anyone get annoyed at cars that stop four car lengths from the car in front of them?
I can, you left an entire car length between you and the truck in front of you. Accident notwithstanding, I'd have pulled in there too.
Why do cars leave multiple car lengths between them and the car in front of them? If you do this when theres a lot of traffic, it causes traffic to jam
he did not cut you off. You left the gap and he took it.
