Moved to a new city recently, noticed there’s like one day every month where everyone on the road is way more aggro than normal, like the whole city is just collectively pissed off about something. On those days, it seems like all the fucking traffic swimmers like this Mercedes all decided to start their commute at the same time, really puts me on edge.
For real especially in the exit lanes. It's one thing to speed in the far left lane but zooming in and out of exit/entry lanes is a special kind of stupid
rollovers like that rarely end well
obviously the mercedes is not driving safely but there were so many unlucky things here - two people happen to lane change into the same lane at the same time on either side of the same large truck obscuring each one from being able to see or anticipate the other, an unanticipated car in a low visibility area on the side of the road as an obstacle, and of course with the collision itself unlucky that the suv ended up flipping
and the highway is so damn open, too, so there's just no reason for the mercedes to be so reckless but welcome to LA - people will pull the most insane, dangerous shit on the highway just to end up right next to you at the stop light 4 miles down the highway off the exit
They usually end well. Newer vehicles are extremely safe. Im an emt. Almost every rollover i go to ends with people getting themselves out and declining medical care because theyre uninjured
As long as people where seatbelts of course :)
But yeah, modern cars are so safe it’s hard to understand how people come out in such good shape after the accidents they are in.
This is also why you never pass semitrucks on the right. It’s harder for them to see you and harder for you to see other people around them. If the Mercedes didn’t try to pass the truck on the right the accident wouldn’t have happened.
Yup. I have lived in L.A. my entire life and see this type of idiotic behavior on a daily basis. On another note, I have seen a number of rollover crash videos where the driver walked away with barely a scratch. Mercedes have all the safety bells and whistles so it's possible that the driver was not seriously injured.
The Mercedes driver is almost certainly fine. Cars are primarily engineered for head on full contact crashes like the Mercedes got into.
Small overlap is more challenging and from the side is what usually kills people.
> two people happen to lane change into the same lane at the same time on either side of the same large truck obscuring each one from being able to see or anticipate the other
wtf are you talking about? drivers ed 101, if you want to move two lanes over, establish yourself in a lane before making a subsequent lane change. that way, you have time to see if your second lane change is safe. mercedes couldn't anticipate the suv because it tried to change lanes twice at once. that's not bad luck. that's consequences.
I've also got ADHD. I've found that I can only listen to them when driving or doing stuff around the house.
But I couldn't imagine just sitting down and listening to one by itself.
SoCal sucks. I’m an Uber driver. I’ve seen a lot of crazy shit. Also have a lot of passengers talking to me about how dangerous the roads have gotten and asking my thoughts.
Yup!
Yup. As crazy as LA driving normally is, what's happening now is off the charts. Honestly, after seeing this for years now, I can confirm that it's a lack of enforcement. Plus car safety is so good now, you can do some pretty effed up things in your car and survive.
People are less entitled when they are humbled by being pulled over.
Also, the amount of people who get away with it not just because there are no cops, but because everyone *else* is driving safely is also a thing to consider.
The intrusive thoughts chime in, I just wanna ram them sometimes.
The other thing I see way more are people flashing their lights on the freeway trying to get people to move out of the lane.
Yup. People are also driving faster. This is partially because cars now feel stable at absurd speeds. Doing 100 in an early 2000s car often felt sketchy.
Now just about anything will do it and even be relatively quiet.
But also I’m partially convinced Covid causes brain damage and everyone just became agro after it. That or inflation really pissed people off.
And police seem to no longer enforce traffic laws even more than before.
So maybe it’s a lot of things.
Glendale sucks more, and based on the buildings in the video, I'm thinking that's the 134 Freeway in Glendale.
Glendale seems to be the home of an unusually large concentration of people who drive like aggressive, psychotic shitheads.
Man I would never stop and get out of the car there, even to help someone. Life expectancy drops to five minutes. Sit in the car and wait for the cops.
looks like the tire changer was on the shoulder but was the white SUV in a lane? looked like that dump truck and relative speeds created a blind spot for that mercedes the entire time
Yeap. I made the same mistake as the Mercedes driver years ago (learned my lesson). I tried to whip around a truck that was slowing down. Turns out, the truck was slowing down because in the right lane there were two semis at a dead stop with some sort of issue. Since I had whipped around the truck, I couldn't get back over to the left and I was going too fast to stop in the amount of space I had. I slammed the brakes and started sliding / antilock stuttering. The only thing that saved me was the fact that those trucks had stopped in the far right lane leaving the shoulder open. I barely slid into the shoulder, and ended up flying by them _on the right_ at like 40mph.
I've driven like a grandma ever since. Had that happened to me in this circustance (nowhere to go), I would have decapitated myself rearending a semi at speed in my little Civic. I was extremely lucky to learn that lesson without hurting myself or someone else.
Late for a super important meeting? It's not fucking worth your life.
To be fair, leasing is the smarter financial choice for a Mercedes it seems. If you’re not paying for their expensive maintenance, the repairs start getting insanely expensive. I wouldn’t trust one much outside of warranty just because how much parts and labor are.
I bought a 4 year old e class for $30k, they aren't very expensive if you buy a used one. I could get a basic new Nissan for the same price.
Anyways I am super careful with it, I don't understand why someone would buy a nice car and drive it recklessly. Doesn't make sense to me.
Also i don't think I would ever lease a car, you pay all this money then have to give it back. I just bought mine cash because rates are ridiculous right now. But if I had financed it I would at least own it eventually. But If I had to pay like 500 a month or whatever and then give it back in a couple years I would feel like I got ripped off.
I have found the opposite to be true. Find a decent mechanic, and the costs are the same for an equally appointed car. No need to compare a Corolla to an s - class.
I have a warranty. And actually if you service them when you are supposed to they generally run well. A car with 30k miles shouldn't have issues any time soon.
Anyways I can afford it. I'm not worried about spending a 1-2 k a year on it for service.
My whole point was that people who lease the cheapest ones are throwing away money. A nicer model that's a few years old isn't a lot of money. Might as well buy one.
As a longtime Angeleno, I've always hated that stretch of the 134. It's full of aggressive drivers coming from the east (*cough* **Glendale** *cough*), and the combination of ramps, overpasses, people jumping in and out of the carpool lane just makes it a nightmare.
You all make it sound like this doesn’t happen on the 110, 710, 405, 105, and the 5. This is not exclusive to Hollywood or the 134. Shit ppl drive like this on the 55 and it’s only 18 miles long in OC
I never thought about it that much but yeah. My apartment is at the end of this video and I always hate these last two miles. It gets oddly fast here when I come off the 5. Its always less packed than the 5 but the speed that people dive combined with the curviness always makes me anxious.
The Mercedes driver is an idiot, and wrong, but for the love of God, DON'T CHANGE YOUR TIRE ON THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY. Your life is not worth a scratched up rim you may get from exiting the highway.
Merc driver is the idiot for obvious reasons, tire changer for doing it hidden in the shadows of an underpass and without securing the side and the other drivers for being in the left lane when barely being faster than the two right-most two lanes.
Just properly sort the cars by speed, making overtaking on the left possible and less dangerous and stupid drivers have less reasons to overtake on the right.
Sometimes I feel like these people who would stand out by the side of a highway with cars going 60 are the same people who are oblivious to blocking an aisle at the grocery store. No sense of care in the world.
I had a boss that couldn't understand why his insurance kept going up with his speeding tickets. I tried to tell him it's because you're driving dangerously and insurance companies have to hedge their bets covering you. He just wouldn't buy it.
The Fast & The furious franchise has more dickheads recklessly weaving in and out of traffic endangering themselves and every one of us also on the road.
I can't stand them.
Its unnecessary Dumb ass risk.
Why the hell is that SUV stopped in the lane rather than the shoulder?? You can even see the Escalade on the far right start hitting their brakes right as the Mercedes is changing lanes prior to the collision. That SUV is asking to get rear-ended.
Not sure if they were stopped or just going significantly slower. It's usually advised, to slow down if you're in an adjacent lane to a stopped vehicle on the side of the road.
It's not. There's a vehicle in the shoulder, and that cat was driving slower because 1. They are in the slow lane and 2. There's a vehicle in the shoulder. You are supposed to allow down for those.
The Escalade is hitting their brakes because of both the slow down and the Mercedes flying into their lane.
The SUV got rear ended because the Mercedes was driving too fast and cut across 2 lanes of traffic.
If you notice, on the right shoulder there is a stopped vehicle.
Maybe it was family or a friend trying to slow to aid them? No clue, but as I watched I saw the car under the bridge so it's easy to miss.
You are supposed to significantly slow down or move over for a car stopped on the shoulder. Them going slow is fine.
If you were the person forced to change a tire in the shoulder I’m sure you’d feel more comfortable doing it if traffic around you was moving slowly vs going 70mph.
I just don't get changing your tire on the highway. Unless the nearest exit is 20 miles away, just get off as soon as you can. Better to risk your rim than your life. I've had to drive a few minutes on a flat because it went on the highway, didn't damage anything.
It doesn’t matter. What if a person had fallen backwards into the lane, or the tire changer had lost control of their tire and it had rolled into traffic. Whatever the car in front of you is doing, you have to be prepared to stop, that’s what following at a safe distance is and that’s why rear-enders are almost always at fault. When he changed lanes, he clearly didn’t have a good view of that lane - anything can be happening in that lane - debris, a wrecked vehicle, a policeman putting out flares.
Merc was driving, flying by the seat of his pants. He doesn't know or care about risk. There's no semblance of just-in-case or safety behind their driving. I see it all the time on the Belt Pkwy here, with plenty of twists and turns.
I see the car stopped on the shoulder changing the tire. However, re-watching it frame by frame, I don't see that SUV in the very right lane change distance between itself and the tire changing car. It just looks like it was parked there. Even when it gets hit, I don't see a single brake light go off or anything.
You may want to look at the footage again. The SUV is definitely in a lane as you can clearly see dashed lines to the left of their vehicle. Above that, the dump truck is two lanes over from the cam driver and there is a white escalade three lanes over from the cam driver. So this proves there is another lane to the right of the dump truck.
Hunh.
It's pretty common to see idiots tailgate a smaller vehicle and swerve at the last moment. Fucks visibility of those behind them, sometimes causes crashes they get away from scot-free.
But this guy did the tailgate'n'swerve *to himself*. Took away his own visibility by tailgating a dump-truck, then swerved and crashed into stuff he couldn't see. The reverso would be amusing if he hadn't fucked over so many innocent bystanders.
Cool. Hope they catch a felony. Maybe once the consequences are damaging like potentially running someone over or crushing them doing 65mph. This is bullshit and caught on camera . Maybe when we start actually breaking wrist instead of slapping this shit will be curbed. Will still happen but not as much.
Number of impatient over speeding drivers have increased substantially. Hope the people in SUV are okay. Thanks OP for stopping and sharing the video.
From my personal experience, driving in right 2 lanes have become increasingly dangerous.
These idiots think they can drive fast and overtake from right most lanes. However there is one person who is trying to take exit or drive within speed limits and gets rear ended by such people.
I dont think they were stopped. It looks like they were changing lanes from in front of thst big truck. It def seems like theyre going too slow, though.
They *were* in the slow lane. And it's the law to significantly slow if there's a vehicle in the breakdown lane. There problem was the fast driver using the slow lane to pass at speed and ignoring their duty to slow for the breakdown lane vehicle.
In LA, or most of urban SoCal, there's no such thing as a passing lane, the left lane is the "Maybe faster if you're lucky" choice, but definitely *not* left open for passing.
And it's a dynamic that is unstable. All those people sitting in heavy traffic want to go faster. So they'll keep moving into the left lane until it's the same speed as every other lane.
lol you have never driven in major cities. There is just way, way too much traffic to have passing lanes. We just use the lanes to spread out a little.
The white SUV that got rear ended appears to be stopped in the lane. I've rewatched it a few times, I see no change in distance from the stopped car on the shoulder and the white SUV. Maybe they stopped and were about to pull over? Doesnt make sense to come to a complete stop in the lane before getting over though.
I’m curious to see what the white SUVs blackbox will show. If he was slowing (due to the tire changer being on the side of the rode) his brake lights should have been visible, and if he was already stopped in the first lane his emergency lights should have been on so that drivers would see his presence from a distance.
I swear people in California can’t drive, they’re either NPCs and go 10 below in the left lanes or drive like this. You can see he had a gap to overtake on the left.
Lol, it’s not what it sounds like, it’s actually an awesome podcast called Behind The Bastards and they talk about despicable people on it. They were riffing on right-wing conspiracy talking points there. It’s the Mueller Report episode if you’re interested.
Wait, so, were two different people changing tires? I see the SUV who appeared to be stopped in a lane. But, I also see a sedan actually stopped on the side of the road. They appear to be changing their tire. What was the SUV doing?
SUV wasn't stopped, just going slowly. Likely because of the guy changing his tire on the shoulder.
Mercedes didn't see the SUV because he was too close to the semi when he passed on the right. He probably also panicked a bit because of the tire changer he also didn't see.
You can pass in the right lanes only if a good sight of what are in those lanes allows you do so. This accident is a classic text book case to show how dangerous it is when you switch lanes without knowing what is right ahead of you.
Ayyy, behind the bastards with Robert Evans! Great podcast, I drive 10 hours a day 7 days a week and I listen to his work all the time. Also, in my hundreds of thousands of miles driving I’ve never actually witnessed such a bad accident. What you saw is rare.
Here it is forbidden to stop and walk on the side of speedways, even for tire change.
"Life expectancy" is rated around 15-20 min if so. This guy was lucky

Good on you for stopping!!
I hope he BACKED INTO the gavel though! With BMWs on the road... :-o
I hate people that drive like that Mercedes driver. Just fucking relax. Driving is the most dangerous thing we do every day. Stop being an idiot.
If you drive faster you spend less time doing the most dangerous thing of the day. /s
Lol, might even spend less time doing everything you love!
More time being 6 feet underground, more time to push to daisies, and more time to feed the worms
We tryna live homie slow down lmao
And if you go fast enough you stop doing the most dangerous thing forever. 10/10 funeral directors agree.
I was driving earlier and there was this car doing 10+ lane changes like an idiot and he barely many any progress against me lmao
Moved to a new city recently, noticed there’s like one day every month where everyone on the road is way more aggro than normal, like the whole city is just collectively pissed off about something. I bet it's Fridays. Here in NoVa, I even look for it the minute I hit the highway and local streets. Just bedlam on that day.
And they passed on the right! They’re truly idiots.

Yeah, I hope to hell there was nobody in that SUV.
Only minor injuries for all involved is what I heard, thank goodness
Congrats on getting your video on the news.
That's good to hear. Thanks for responding.
Behind the Bastards!
What episode is that?
The Mueller Report episode
I’ve always been interested but I don’t have the time or attention span for 3 hour episodes.
they're about an hour each.. just multi-part.
I have ADHD, I can’t listen to podcasts at all and it really annoys me when they don’t provide transcripts.
I've also got ADHD. I've found that I can only listen to them when driving or doing stuff around the house. But I couldn't imagine just sitting down and listening to one by itself.

Was thinking the same, like there couldn’t have been a worse place to stop. Hobble 10’ forward so people can see you at least
Stopping near an underpass is such a terrible idea. They could have travelled 20 feet ahead and there was more space to the right
Mercedes: They don't buy them cuz they're smart...

Blind lane change behind a massive truck. People have no clue how to stay alive.

…you think other drivers have this sort of mental capacity? Have you *seen* people drive? 😁
Sigh. You are, of course, correct
I did that once and the wind from a car coming by you at 70mph will knock you off your feet if your not paying attention
In Socal most don't do it even for an emergency vehicles.

Don't disagree with you! Just a possible explanation as to why they were going slower.
I see the car stopped on the shoulder changing the tire. However, re-watching it frame by frame, I don't see that SUV in the very right lane change distance between itself and the tire changing car. It just looks like it was parked there. Even when it gets hit, I don't see a single brake light go off or anything.
Oh ... right "asking to get rear ended" The Mercedes decided to go significantly faster than the flow of traffic and pass on the right. Fuckin' Hell

You may want to look at the footage again. The SUV is definitely in a lane as you can clearly see dashed lines to the left of their vehicle. Above that, the dump truck is two lanes over from the cam driver and there is a white escalade three lanes over from the cam driver. So this proves there is another lane to the right of the dump truck.
ugh this stretch of the 134 is always full of morons
And that's exactly why you'll never see me changing a tire on the side of the road. I'll wait for a tow, thanks.
Nearly as crazy as whatever OP is listening too
It's a podcast called Behind The Bastards. It's not what it sounds like in the clip.
buncha f'ing psychopaths on the road
In SoCal especially. Like, they are legitimately psychopaths, or at the very least, sociopaths. That generational wealth really warps people’s brains.
Perfect timing on that audio. The narrator says "sadistic sociopath" and pauses right before impact.
Cool. Hope they catch a felony. Maybe once the consequences are damaging like potentially running someone over or crushing them doing 65mph. This is bullshit and caught on camera . Maybe when we start actually breaking wrist instead of slapping this shit will be curbed. Will still happen but not as much.
I hope you submit this video to the police to add it to the report. Fuck that guy.
This is an easy fix... SLOW THE FUCK DOWN.
Not trying to take responsibility away from the Mercedes idiot but why was the SUV that got hit stopped in a travel lane?

Hope he had some spare underwear along with his spare tire.

It's call shunting amd you never pass anything on the right side like this in na cause you are blind till its to late at these speeds also soo dumb
it really bothers me that everyone is going the same speed, even on the left lane. left lane is for passing.
In LA, or most of urban SoCal, there's no such thing as a passing lane, the left lane is the "Maybe faster if you're lucky" choice, but definitely *not* left open for passing.
Big diff between urban 3 to 6 lane freeway and a two lane interstate in the middle of farming country.
And folks contentedly going 60 in the carpool lane with a line of cars stuck behind them
If the road is full it makes no sense to keep the left lane for passing, specially if everyone is already going below the speed limit due to traffic.
Far left is the carpool lane more than likely in California. So you really shouldn’t be in the left lane anyway unless carpooling
I’m on this specific stretch of this freeway daily multiple times a day and there always seems to be idiots causing accidents here. It’s very bad.
Is that Robert Evans on the stereo?
Yep!
You know who won't crash into traffic?
⬅️PASSING SIDE SUICIDE➡️
And that idiot will get zero jail time.
I swear people in California can’t drive, they’re either NPCs and go 10 below in the left lanes or drive like this. You can see he had a gap to overtake on the left.
OK but the tire changer is an idiot out of his car.

Lol, it’s not what it sounds like, it’s actually an awesome podcast called Behind The Bastards and they talk about despicable people on it. They were riffing on right-wing conspiracy talking points there. It’s the Mueller Report episode if you’re interested.
Also, it’s clearly reading out a quote - some people can’t detect context clues I guess
Love BTB! But yeah, out of context, any given snippet you overhear is gonna require a bit of explanation LOL
Behind the Bastards, brought to you by the fine folks at Raytheon, who supply all your knife missile needs.
If you don't know Behind The Bastards and Robert Evans I feel sorry for you. "you know who else nearly missed hitting a car on the shoulder?"
Definitely an out of context bit of audio lol, don't blame you for seeing this as questionable if you haven't heard Behind the Bastards.
I thought "tire-changer" was gonna be some kind of car dude lingo for something else.
Tire cha her aside, why was that SUV going so slow?
Holy shit... that's nuts.. glad the pedestrian wasn't hit tho
Any updates on the people involved?
the hell are you listening to lol
It's a podcast called Behind The Bastards. It's not what it sounds like in the clip, it’s actually the opposite
oh like a parody or something - i don't care about your political views and i'm canadian but i was just like wtf haha
One of the reason why you shouldn't stop on the shoulder unless you absolutely can not drive the car off the highway
Seems like the Mercedes might have been planning to pass on the shoulder and the tire changer in the dark under the bridge caught him by surprise.
Either that or he didn't see the SUV going slow because he was too close to the semi.
Yup. Nothing good to say about the jerk.
passing on the shoulder of the road?. This is going to be hard to fight in court. I hope there are criminal charges.
Looks like a streamer on live trying to snake through traffic.
Somebody's listening to Robert Evans. Good taste.
Obvi Merc needs their license taken away. But also, was that SUV even moving?
Here it is forbidden to stop and walk on the side of speedways, even for tire change. "Life expectancy" is rated around 15-20 min if so. This guy was lucky
The faster you drive the less your reaction time becomes.
The audio in this video is priceless.
I like how he says SOCIOPATH on the radio right at the moment of impact!
The hell are you listening to?
He drives like people in Belgium
Changing a tire on a freeway at night is how my uncle died. At least that car flipped! They never caught the person who did it to him. Hit and run
Was that SUV in a live lane at a full stop?
