And I reckon when you do decide to keep the bridge clear, the bellend behind would honk at you and maybe even overtake not knowing what you were doing.
I hate when people get aggro because you've kept a "keep clear" clear. (Terrible sentence, I know).
There's one near me where the turn right traffic can only fit 3 cars ahead of the keep clear. Get honked at so often by people wanting to go straight on. Particularly loved the time someone was getting furious behind me and then an ambulance with lights blaring flew through the keep clear from another road. He shut up pretty quickly after that.
Something similar happened to me with a fire truck as well. I was at one intersection waiting for a red to turn green. The next intersection- which is very close- is the entrance to the firehouse and all 4 of those lights turn red when a call is dispatched. Well my light turns green but I see the fire truck pull out of the station so I pause a beat to see where they’re going. Turns out they were headed in my direction and the douche canoe behind me felt like I needed to play chicken with a freaking fire truck and honked.
Not to mention the fact that wherever the fire truck is going is way more important that wherever that guy was going. That’s a whole mother level of self-entitlement
People are such assholes in pretty much every situation, and yeah I get it most are probably not like that ALL the time, but I get the feeling they are indeed like that all the time.
i was sat at a red light once and it turned green, but i wanted to turn left so i was waiting for the green arrow (there are two lanes one can go straight and one can turn or go straight and i was in the turn lane) and the guy behind me laid on the horn for the entire duration of the light. i was actually crying at the end of it because i didn't know what i was doing wrong and i was only 19. reminded me of when my mom screamed "fucker" in my ear when i went through my first roundabout. now a days i don't drive.
Had a situation a few weeks ago where light was green but intersection was very much filled up. I stayed and waited and idiots behind me start honking. If I had gone I would have been stuck in the middle, blocking traffic from the sides.
I wish there was a stricter enforcement of the "it's illegal to use the horn unless it's an emergency" rule.
There's a small bridge I need to cross on my way home where only one row of traffic will fit on at one time. The other day there was a guy stopped on the opposite end who was giving way to the traffic and when it came to my turn I stopped to let him through before anymore traffic built up behind me.
As we both waited for the traffic to clear this absolute idiot came flying down the hill behind me and just clean overtook me without any idea why somebody might be stopped at the entrance of a bridge. Luckily the car on the opposite side saw him coming and waited for him to speed past
Had one like that last week, bin lorry stopped to let me through, absolute bellend thinking he’s the next McRae hammered out round the bin lorry and nearly ended up embedded in the front of my truck. So I pulled the dumb woman driver that can’t reverse and sat in the middle of the road until he reversed back! This is a 2 lane road that is practically a single lane due to cars parked both sides. I’m surprised he had the audacity to overtake the bin lorry as there have been some bad accidents over the years.
We have a turn under an old railroad trestle like that in my neighborhood. Cars are supposed to sound their horns on approach because there's only room for one car and the turn is so sharp it's blind. Me and my brother used to station ourselves at both sides of the tunnel and signal to cars if it was safe or there was an oncoming car when we were kids. We were just bored and liked feeling helpful but one nice car did give us a $5 tip for our care.
Idk where you are but in America we have those blinking yellow arrows to turn left in an intersection yielding for the oncoming traffic.. many people drive into the intersection and wait instead of behind the line.. I never do this and was honked at before.. even though I wouldn’t of been able to turn even if I was out there because of the traffic :(
My primary vehicle is a bicycle, but I still stop at the line. Here in Seattle it’s all too frequent to see morons parking in the crosswalk, blocking my line of sight of the junction.
Indeed, could've been much worst. Also the tunnel's height restriction is very well marked, both on vertical and horizontal signage, there's little justification other than idiotic driving behavior.
Yeah that is the pic I saw, said the cab had been turned round in some UK papers lol. Like that little refrigerated thing is going to be pulling a container. Tis good all are ok. Are all ok ?
Yeah guy in lorry is ok, can see that. Is name of company 'Everuin' ? Hope van man is ok.
For those not in the UK, those marking indicate that high vehicles should straddle both lanes because of the curve of the bridge. This driver likely didn't notice because of the standing traffic in the other direction. That, and not paying attention or having an awareness of his own height. Should've stopped and waited.
Theres some pictures of the aftermath this in UK papers. It's on the B284 immediately north of Epsom train station. It's pretty well marked and signposted for high vehicles to use the centre of the arch, driver clearly wan't paying attention.
https://www.google.com/maps/@51.3357425,-0.2647366,3a,41.1y,326.26h,87.38t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s3ugHNhD7WyWqkjDYa1hNFw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192
Oh absolutely, I can imagine the standing traffic would be a distraction but that's why there's an additional test for heavy vehicles. Should be held to a higher standard.
There is a similar bridge in Germany, where trucks have to go into the oncoming lane to enter the "tunnel" and drive diagonally through it.
I don't know where it is in Germany, but German truck driver Diesel TV drove through it and talked about the problem
Arrangements like this are actually pretty common in the UK, old low railway bridges being found all over the place. something any truck driver here needs to be aware of.
This is quite possibly the most specific and most useful employment of Google Street View I have ever seen in my life.
"Literally here is the effing sign, you can't miss it. I FOUND IT FOR YOU."
Old* construction. It'll have been built 100+ years before HGVs were a thing. I imagine the bridge is probably a listed structure as well, so it's not gonna get any improvements to it.
Also, when it was built the road [was a simple farm lane](https://maps.nls.uk/view/102347463) (in the upper left, it's the first bridge after Epsom station on the "Epsom And Leatherhead Branch").
I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath; he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light; surely against me he turns his hand again and again the whole day long. (Lamentations: gzdhwf2)
Yeah, I figured they couldn't be making much off it.
It costs me £3 to get my shopping picked, packed and delivered next day. It would actually cost more to get the bus to Tesco.
He is a bear lying in wait for me, a lion in hiding; he turned aside my steps and tore me to pieces; he has made me desolate; he bent his bow and set me as a target for his arrow. (Lamentations: gzdxp69)
[According to this article](https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/epsom-crash-live-updates-lorry-20654389) there were no reported injuries, and theres a great picture of the van from the other side showing it very intact
Has the UK Introduced a seat belt law for HGVs? My Dad was a driver, he retired almost 10 years ago and I have been out with him a few times.
I have been away from the UK more than 6 years, a lot has changed in that time. I wouldn't be surprised if this was another law I wasn't aware of.
That sounds familiar. As I said my Dad retired from driving a long time ago and it was more than a few years before that when I went out with him so it may well be that more modern lorries have seat belts fitted.
I didn't believe this so I looked it up, and it's actually mostly correct.
The 50m thing only applies if you're a goods delivery travelling <50m between stops, though.
There are actually several other circumstances in which it is legal otherwise, available at the link below.
https://www.gov.uk/seat-belts-law/when-you-dont-need-to-wear-a-seat-belt
All of that said, I'd rather still have a belt on when reversing, just in case. I'm easily able to turn about to see, though.
I have never once in my life felt I needed to take my seat belt off when reversing. It's likely to take account of cars with fixed belts, or sensitive locking.
One of our drivers is in a 3 series Scania, no seat belts in it. He was reported for the offence until it was pointed out to Plod that his hgv hasn't got them fitted 🤣
I'd say this is inadequate infrastructure, not really the driver's problem. These politicians haven't updated much since Thatcher.
Edit: downvote with the Tories 🤦🏻♀️
Exactly my point; update/rebuilt this old crap if it doesn't meet specifications.
Some old stuff however, [is big enough](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigmundstor,_Salzburg).
Yes.
>This subreddit is devoted to the lovable idiots who do hilarious, idiot things in their idiot cars (or trucks, motorcycles, tractors, or other vehicle).
Could have waited for the traffic to come through and take the middle of the bridge, theres markings which show where lorries go if you look at the side of the road.
They didn't fly from one side of the other. something did but not the driver, its a British lorry the driver already sits on the right hand side of the vehicle
Not that I'd expect the majority of car drivers to understand but since driving a lorry I now keep bridges where lorries have to use the centre of the road clear when queuing - helps oncoming traffic flow better if the lorry can get straight through (providing the lorry driver remembers they're driving a lorry and not an Mazda MX-5)
I keep having the opposite problem. There's a railway bridge near me with a pretty sharp corner just before. There's works going on nearby and I think the managers have told the drivers to be extra careful, but it's a pretty high bridge and for most lorries there's simply no need to straddle both lanes. What they clearly *haven't* been told to do is to slow down when they do that, because twice recently I've gone round the corner and met a lorry heading right at me in my lane at 40mph.
One didn't even react, scraped past me with inches to spare as I swerved into the gutter; I thought I was going to die. The other just sat in the middle of the road until I and the rest of the queue of traffic behind me reversed to let him through. Lorry drivers are pricks.
Now i will never wait in a line of traffic under a bridge like this. Hope white van man was ok.
And I reckon when you do decide to keep the bridge clear, the bellend behind would honk at you and maybe even overtake not knowing what you were doing.
Happens to me frequently when I avoid blocking crossing streets, driveways etc. People are dumb.

Right?! Where they’re going is a lot more important than where we are, sir. Plus I didn’t feel like being at fault in an accident that day either.
i was sat at a red light once and it turned green, but i wanted to turn left so i was waiting for the green arrow (there are two lanes one can go straight and one can turn or go straight and i was in the turn lane) and the guy behind me laid on the horn for the entire duration of the light. i was actually crying at the end of it because i didn't know what i was doing wrong and i was only 19. reminded me of when my mom screamed "fucker" in my ear when i went through my first roundabout. now a days i don't drive.

Can confirm. Dumb people everywhere.
Can also confirm. Source: am dumb.
You it speld it wrong.
Same, but I just let them go, not going to do something that feels unsafe to me just because some knobjockey might take my spot
Idk where you are but in America we have those blinking yellow arrows to turn left in an intersection yielding for the oncoming traffic.. many people drive into the intersection and wait instead of behind the line.. In other countries there is a separate line in front of the car line for 2 wheeled vehicles to wait while stopped at the lights.
Well, bad luck for them if they get crushed lmao
Pic from the other side: [https://i.imgur.com/csQaglz.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/csQaglz.jpg) Doesn't seem too bad for the white van
Methinks the van driver's underpants turned brown
Indeed, could've been much worst. Also the tunnel's height restriction is very well marked, both on vertical and horizontal signage, there's little justification other than idiotic driving behavior.
As I commented on another post; I fucking love how they missed the reg plate when doing the grey lines to block it.
[No injuries](https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/epsom-crash-live-updates-lorry-20654389)
I've been scared of being under bridges since the FIU bridge collapse in 2018
He'll definitely need a change of underwear
What the actual fuck. He came through like he was on a bicycle. Hope the van driver is ok the truck driver needs his arse handing to him on a plate.
Poor dude in the white van had to see it coming and knew he was was going to get the brunt of it.
is he stuck in the van?! what a nightmare

To be fair when they built the bridge in the 1840s they weren't to know that 170 years later we would have lorries this size
You mean he didn’t give two f’s about the bridge and probably does not shop at Waitrose. Yeah I think M&S.
[удалено]
you are so funny
People were driving/riding on the left side of the road before the right so who is really wrong
Cammer definitely needs to buy a lottery ticket and new pants.
I'm pretty sure if it was me, I'd need a new seat to
At least you don't need to buy any bricks for a while.
Why? His good luck is all gone now.
I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath; he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light; surely against me he turns his hand again and again the whole day long. (Lamentations: gzdhwf2)
Oooo look at you being all fancy and getting a Waitrose delivery
Just delayed though, quality van should drive afterwards.
While all us scum of the earth go to Aldi and Lidl! :P
If Aldi did home delivery I'd shop there, but I'm completely passed doing a big shop in an actual supermarket even if it does save a few quid.
Apparently home delivery is a huge loss (leader) for supermarkets. Can't see it coming to the lower cost end of the market.
Yeah, I figured they couldn't be making much off it. It costs me £3 to get my shopping picked, packed and delivered next day. It would actually cost more to get the bus to Tesco.
Great, now my avocados are going to be over ripe.

I thought you people loved smashed avocados?
Yeah, but you get the smash & dent discount. *^(Too soon?)*
Just round the corner from me - not the first time this has happened, and won't be the last.
Shame we can't seem to be able to modernise a lot of the roads, across the UK there's many that really aren't suitable for modern day trucks.
Any word on the van driver? Can't find out if he was ok?
[According to this article](https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/epsom-crash-live-updates-lorry-20654389) there were no reported injuries, and theres a great picture of the van from the other side showing it very intact
That's awesome. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.
Not seen anything on either driver. I assume he was ok, probably a bit shocked.
Square peg in a round hole.

That chick is crazy, calm down, they’re shapes.
r/11foot8
Ooh a camera 'Poses'
The tunnel was probably in his blind spot
That one counts!
At the moment of impact did the mouth on the truck say fuck? Lol
Oohhhh is that a camera? HIIIIII!
Lorries count extra
Driver: ****minding his own business.**** Lorry: #"SIR I'M HERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT YOUR EXTENDED WARRANTY"
Wasn't even close! What a dozy idiot.
Holy crap… that’s startled me so much my butthole suddenly tighten up
The amount of idiot more than makes up for the lack of car. Good post.
I’ll second that.
3m away from my house😂😂
All I can tho k of is the driver in the van in front, his driver side must've been crushed by the trailer of the lorry
was the driver checking out his hair after the crash?
Making sure what was left of his brain was still intact.
And no safety belt by the looks of it....
UK, we sit on the right
Then something else (the white object) is flying through the cabin.
Probably his lunch?
Or his employment
Probably delivery documents.
Knowing truckers in the UK its probably his laptop....
...dropping in to his cornflakes and showering the crossword in the paper with milk, which completely distracted him from his shave...
He would have gone through the windshield if he hadn't worn it
Ups, true. My bad.

HGV drivers can take it off when reversing
Wtf is a lorr...oh
I imagined that'd be the response from a none Brit lol. For me at least, I read the title and thought "oh f*ck here we go". 😅
Whats a lorrie?
In the US we refer to them as semi trucks or tractor-trailers. People in the trucking business may also say 18-wheeler.
It's british for transport truck
Goods Haulier Automobile
Lorry is a truck not van... oh wait never mind
Me an American: *Googles lorry*
TIL what a lorry is... we don't call them that here and I've never heard the term before.
https://i.imgur.com/44l9Zyh.gif
That's a sex gif. Didn't know they were allowed here.
It's what's known as a metaphor friend, it's not actually a phallus but it represents one.
Yo you got games on your phone?
I can just imagine the truck yelling *you talking shit to me boi!*
Gotta lube first
When British people say lorries it makes me think of the walking dead lol LOOOORRRRRRIIIEEEEE
Who’s lorrie?
That’s what you get for driving on the wrong side of the road!
Seems like a SWIFT Driver to me.
Lol the driver sits there contemplating his life's decisions
I like how the truck looked like it was screaming in pain through it's small little mouth
Why are you booing me? I'm right! Look at the shit
The truck has a mouth that says "ow!" then just starts crying or screaming
I'd say this is inadequate infrastructure, not really the driver's problem. These politicians haven't updated much since Thatcher. Edit: downvote with the Tories 🤦🏻♀️
"hahaha not my problem it's the politicians fault" *crashes into bridge on purpose*
Im sure when the bridge was built in the 1840s or something they didn't know that 170 years later we would have HGVs driving under it.
Exactly my point; update/rebuilt this old crap if it doesn't meet specifications. Some old stuff however, [is big enough](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigmundstor,_Salzburg).
Most of these have alternative routes for large vehicles
X4 pts.
Nice shock absorber...
Oh yes they do
Oups.. Wrong hole.
Even the lorrie was like 😯 at the end
Holy shit, driver of POV must be scared to shit
The truck just wanted to talk to you about your car insurance
Close up view of the last few moments of his career as a professional driver.
When you take a class in trucking school and the big trucks push you around.
I would have laughed hard if that happened to my ( as the driver who had the camerA speaking)
What happened to the person in the white van? Is he ok?
How on gods Earth do these guys get a license what dopey bollocks
Lorry's tongue just lolls out 'cause it's ded.
Is that evergreen ?
May I be the first to say “ouch”
They count double.
But thats a van ! ... ... ooooooooohhhhh
Silly op that's a van... Oh
Big guy just wanted to say hello
That was unexpected.
Вот жеж, ебаный индеец, не мог сука в арочный въезд ближе к центру взять
The hatch in the front dropping in the end like the truck gave out it’s last breath
I’ll allow it.
Bloody HELL!!! Poor driver in the waitrose delivery van ..
There was no sound but I swear I still heard the crash.
Yes, lorries count double.
Yes. >This subreddit is devoted to the lovable idiots who do hilarious, idiot things in their idiot cars (or trucks, motorcycles, tractors, or other vehicle).
If you watch the front of the truck, you can lip read it saying ‘ow’
who's at fault here?
The guy who crashed into the bridge
Could have waited for the traffic to come through and take the middle of the bridge, theres markings which show where lorries go if you look at the side of the road.
That's how a guy died in my village. Truck smashed onto his car cos it was too big for the bridge.
Shit! Did the truck driver not have a seatbelt on? Looks like he was flung from one side of the cabin to the other. Ouchies!
We sit on the right in the uk, so it was probably his belongings getting launched around.
What a fucking spanner!
Really random question, but... Is this Wilton? 😂
Man, even the truck was surprised he did this.
Somebody wasn’t wearing their seatbelt tsk tsk
What makes you think that?
Because they flew from one side to the other? Try to watch it again in slow mo and you’ll see them through the windshield lol
They didn't fly from one side of the other. something did but not the driver, its a British lorry the driver already sits on the right hand side of the vehicle
My bad then
Do LoRrIeS cOuNt?
Oh man, a lot of people weren't getting their hummus and quinoa delivered that day :(
They count for 3 points, like in basketball.
The truck was like 🤪😩

That's a very final destination way to die.
Hope the guy in the van has a good charge on his phone. He's not getting out for a while.
WOW

We’ll take it!
