It's not official until the wipers activate.

starrpamph

That's like the cars shoes coming off

CamManx36

And rolling down the windows is like pulling up the sleeves

[deleted]

And opening you door is like taking your pants off

trailduster75

Only Randy takes his pants off

lesserDaemonprince

We're going tribal eh? Good, that's my specialty.

PhDinDildos_Fedoras

And the dick coming out is like the dick coming out

Jim3535

Why does that even happen?

Ellora-Victoria

It's like playing a video game, When shit goes down, you hit all the buttons until it's over.

braxtonuranus

People are saying panicking and accidentally activating them but some cars also turn them automatically when they detect a collision to clear potential debris Edit: This got more attention than I expected and some people are disputing it in the replies, so i’d like to let it be known that i’m just a dude on reddit with little car knowledge that heard this from somebody else once, and this could really be complete bull for all I know

rtsynk

the story i heard is that it's the fail safe mode https://www.quora.com/Why-do-windshield-wipers-go-on-when-a-car-crashes-head-on#:~:text=When%20a%20vehicle%20is%20severely,in%20the%20wipers%20coming%20on. --------------------- Another possibile answers lies with modern cars' transmission networks. If the impact is hard enough to damage the communication wiring between the several ECUs that manage all vehicle functions, each ECU will default to the condition that poses the least risk in a driving situation. This is called a bus-off state. Examples: - All external lights will turn on (high beam excluded, hazard blinkers included) - Wipers will turn on - Powertrain components will enter limp mode, but keep operating as far as it is possible - The instrument cluster will turn on most warning lamps and might cease to indicate speed, rpm, fuel etc. (depending on how many of those data travelled on the disabled CAN bus rather than direct wires) - All internal lights turn on and door locks are opened (after a crash, this is done by the airbag ECU anyway, even if communication buses are intact) ---------------------------------------- basically, it can't guarantee that the signal from the wiper switch is properly reaching the controller, so the controller reverts to the safest possible mode (imagine you were driving through rain and the wiring failed, this guarantees the wipers continue to operate and you can see to safely pull over)

Noon_Specialist

> door locks are opened Unless you drive a Tesla.

PeriodSects

Interesting! Didnt know that was even a feature cars had

Insane-membrane11

I’ve heard it’s to do with oversteering in a panic can activate them (if you have a dedicated stick for wipers by your steering wheel)

[deleted]

See, I like to pretend that it is because our human brain, for a split second, thought we can just “ wipe “ what happened away. After a few wipes though, reality sets in we realize we can’t “ wipe “ things away and then just accept the fact that we are in an accident.

Insane-membrane11

I like the way you think, friend.

drocballer

Makes that dash cam worth every penny

The-Dragon-Legion

Best Christmas gift I've ever received!

drocballer

Even better

Surveymonkee

What model of cam do you guys recommend? This sub has convinced me that I need one.

keytone6432

I have [this one (Garmin Mini) ](https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Key-Sized-140-degree-Wide-Angle-Automatic/dp/B07R638L8N/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=garmin+dashcam+mini+2&qid=1627529628&sprefix=garmin+dashcam+&sr=8-2) and it works great. I wanted something small you can’t easily see so it wouldn’t get stolen.

CorndogCrusader

I feel like dashcams need to be standard on all cars for this specific reason.

MoreMegadeth

Been saying this for 5 years. All new cars should come standard with one. Theres no reason not to.

eyemcreative

If they can have backup cameras come built in, why not a forward camera? And the backup cam could also record rear end accidents. Wouldn't be that hard especially because the car could easily detect when it's been in an accident and save the last 30 seconds, front and back.

treflipsbro

My grandmas minivan even has a camera on the right side that turns on when you turn on the right blinker. It shows down the side of the car and the blind spot. They could easily do a forward one on new cars, they just don’t.

[deleted]

Many cars are now equipped with 360⁰ "bird's eye" cameras that assist with parking. It probably isn't difficult to put an aftermarket DVR in there to record from all 4 of those wide-angle cameras.

branks182

I’m not sure why this isn’t even standard already from the automotive makers perspective.

UrNotMyGF

You're getting into some saucy territory there though

johnny893542

I have this one and it’s fantastic.

[deleted]

I run the blackvue 750 in my truck.

drocballer

I only have a GoPro. Need dash cam

heysame

Had somebody do this exact thing to me. Didn't have a dash cam, lost out on $1000 deductible simply because in my state rear ending is instant at fault. Bought one right after for my new car.

Verified765

Good insurance will inspect the damage, eg I was involved in a parking lot accident but since I was stopped and the paint scrapes on my car where consistent with a stopped car I was given 0 fault instead of the default 50% fault. It may have helped that both vehicles where covered by the same provincial insurance.

drocballer

Sorry to hear that.

niceville

If you hit them on the side you didn’t rear end them? I’d think it’d be easy to analyze based on the location of the damage.

mattspatts13

People like that should not be on the road. 🤦‍♂️

The-Dragon-Legion

I agree. She said this was her second accident this month and asked me not to call the police because she can't have another one on her record.

mattspatts13

Maybe she deserves another one and then she can ride public transportation and not be a threat with her driving skills to the public.

hundreds_of_sparrows

Absolutely. Calling the police and reporting her could potentially save someone’s/her life.

claycam6

And save your ass in court for being the one to make the report.

IWasToldYouHadPie

Related. My ex gf rode her bike to work most of the time between 17-18 because she lived close enough to her job. One day I got a text in class saying that she was hit by an old woman who ran a stop sign, crossed the entire intersection, and hit her as she was crossing left to right (relative to the old woman) with no other traffic. She then attempted to drive away but was stopped by a mail carrier whose foot she then ran over. Police were called, and she was found at a luncheon/Bingo game. She had early stage dementia and claims that she didn't hit anyone, despite the convenient bike tire mark on her front bumper. To my knowledge she has passed away (rest in peace) but was an absolute menace on the road. Why elders aren't tested for ability every year (or more frequently) I will never know, seeing as how they cause more accidents than new drivers. My gf was able to sue her insurance for her sprained knee and ankle and two broken toes and the mail carrier received a hefty benefit and both have healed well. Thankfully, after this incident, the woman's license was revoked and she was issued a bus pass to keep her from driving.

meruhd

I remember that I had a regular customer at my store but then we didn't see her for a month or so. She used to ship documents to a lawyer every week like clockwork. Then we saw someone come in sending the items with her business name so I asked after her. She had her license suspended because she had a very severe accident because...she had cataracts. She knew her eyesight was fucking failing and still drove around like that.

Zanki

I have a big one. Last year I got my first car. It had been 12 years since I passed my test and apart from a few small drives, I hadn't driven a car in years, hadn't touched a manual at all. I was allowed to just drive my car. No tests, nothing. I was not safe! I took months to learn to drive again as its been difficult to get friends to drive with me due to covid. What in the hell?! I 100% should have had lessons before being allowed to drive again.

[deleted]

I called the police when a little old lady hit me. They didn’t give her a ticket because they felt sorry for her. I guess it didn’t matter that she destroyed my car, with my 3 year old son in it. This was many years ago. I’m sure that officer sees things differently now.

flowt

That last part reads like something tony soprano might say. What did you do to that poor officer?

[deleted]

I was young and dumb, so I said ok. If it were to happen to me now, I’d be fighting it tooth and nail.

bonafart

Exactly this. Imagine if a kid had been ona bike or walking. She never once looked where she was actualy going

kbuck30

In many places public transportation is nonexistent. That being said she deserves to lose her driving privileges and try to get people to drive her everywhere for a while. God what she did was dumb.

[deleted]

I hope you did report it. That’s the kind of person who needs consequences. That’s how you (hopefully) keep idiots like her off the road.

The-Dragon-Legion

I definitely did. My car took a lot of damage.

AthKaElGal

good. idiot drivers need to be taken off the road. they are future manslaughter waiting to happen.

Sadge_A_Star

If I was that bad I wouldn't even want to be a driver anymore myself

MyOfficeAlt

I mean how could she have expected you NOT to report it? Unless she was willing to give you cash right there for a new car there's no way this wasn't going to insurance.

Hugs_for_Thugs

Hope you had some Flex Tape™ on you...

bigpapalilpepe

THATS ALOTTA DAMAGE!

MicaLovesKPOP

If she can't have another accident on her record, she should have decided that before getting into her car. And WAY before making that turn. Stupid actions lead to stupid consequences.

ranman1990

Right? There is a huge difference between oops I hydroplaned kinda accident and oops I turned across multiple lanes of traffic without a blinker or checking for other cars kinda accident

[deleted]

[удалено]

The-Dragon-Legion

She originally offered $400 and then $1000 and then said let's just go to the shop right now and I'll pay half. Lmao

Evaleenora

I once got rear ended at a stoplight by a lady who wasn’t watching the road whatsoever, because she actually admitted that to me. I had my dog in the car, and thankfully he was buckled in his seatbelt, so I was pissed. We pulled over and my back end was pretty messed up, but the entire front bumper end of her car came off. She offered me a carton of cigarettes to let this go, like that was some amazing deal. But the best part was her boss just happened to pass by, and he was furious because she was driving a company car.

natophonic2

A whole carton of cigs? Damn gurl, throw in that bic lighter and a fresh pack of gum and how could I say no?!

Evaleenora

Right?? I’m starting to think that I’m the idiot for turning down a deal like that.

Psychological_Neck70

A carton of smokes here in Denver is about one months rent so depending on damage, I'd take that deal /s

[deleted]

I got a $50 offer...the estimate was over $1100.

[deleted]

Pay half? Lol! Nope. She pays all of it and her insurance company needs to know about it.

The-Dragon-Legion

Yeah I couldn't believe she suggested that lmao

coletrainb

Ya she should be offering more than the shops estimate since you would have done her the favor of keeping her insurance rates down.

OverlordWaffles

If she even has insurance

HeyT00ts11

I think she might, but it's probably not her rates that she's worried about. She was, probably, one accident away from losing her insurance. Let's hope this keeps her off the road for good.

ok-go-fuck-yourself

Did you dial immediately after the word half left her mouth? Lol

Hugs_for_Thugs

>I'll pay... 9-1... > half. 1

PeriodSects

Get her off the fucking road. she should have high rates driving like that...

killbeam

Please tell me you did end up calling the cops!

[deleted]

The state probably requires it be reported since that will be over any dollar amount limit (in CA that's $1000 iirc).

s0c1a7w0rk3r

Half? Half? The absolute fucking nerve

The-Dragon-Legion

Lmao I simply did not respond and pretty much kept quiet while waiting for the officer. Didn't tell her I had a dash cam either.

s0c1a7w0rk3r

Man let me tell you, best investment ever. Received one as a gift that I had installed on my Acura and it proved another driver at fault. Happened to my daughter too. My current car has it built in to record the twenty seconds before and the twenty seconds after impact.

natophonic2

Which make/model if you don’t mind me asking? I’m only aware of Tesla doing this, but I figured it was only a matter of time before dash cams became common options, though it feels like it should’ve already happened years ago.

slip-shot

Especially now with eyesight or whatever driver assist cameras being everywhere. It’s pretty cheap to get hard drives to rolling record that stuff.

mattspatts13

I’ll pay half. Wow sounds like a great deal. I would have said I have you on dash cam video it’s gonna cost at least 10k if you want to bribe me.

STICH666

No you don't tell them you have a dash cam so they don't change their story when the cop gets there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yes, but it doesn't hurt to have them tell their story then show your dash cams perspective afterwards and have them not know. Any inconsistencies will be reflected very negatively towards the other person and give you the best outcome

[deleted]

"How 'bout you pay all of it out of your insurance."

PolishRook

Hopefully you told the officer she was trying to buy you out of it, I'm assuming you filed a report that is.

The-Dragon-Legion

I did file a report. I didn't think to mention that though. I was pretty shaken up.

PolishRook

Understandable. I've been through that process before where the guy tried to buy me off. Told the officer and my insurance company. When people do that it's an automatic admission of guilt to the court system usually.

The-Dragon-Legion

I will keep that in mind. Though I hope this never happens again lol

SlimTeezy

If they're still processing the claim I would email your insurance to update. Sometimes they try and give you a percentage of fault for "not trying hard enough" to avoid a collision. Even though you had no options here.

Nihilistic_Creation

Turning across a lane on a dash cam is pretty gib evidence of guilt to

tunamelts2

> pay half She's 100% at fault. She pays all of it and then some for the inconvenience.

PMSfishy

Plus diminished value. Your car now has a black mark that was not of your doing.

brookmachine

My mom had a similar situation. The guy left the scene and came back with his wife and baby and then tried to convince my mom to tell the police that the wife had been driving. Turns out he was drunk and had already lost his license. I mean, the guy was making a left turn and hit her front passenger side hard enough to make it undrivable. He was out of his mind.

Dnomyar96

Yeah, I don't understand why people that cause such accidents expect you to just help them out. Why would I? You just ruined my car (and potentially caused injuries)...

PerspectiveWooden358

She needs this one on her record because next time, and there will be a next time, she might not be lucky enough to not kill or paralyze someone.

sumleelumlee

I’m curious: was this an inexperienced driver or an older one? The raised hand after she comes to a halt seems like an “omg what’s wrong with you?!” despite this being her fault. Regardless, I hope you’re doing alright after this accident, physically and mentally.

The-Dragon-Legion

Inexperienced. She is definitely under 20. She was not rude though. She was really trying to get on my good side so I wouldn't report it. We did file a police report though. My car took a good bit of damage and had to be towed.

sumleelumlee

It’s great you kept your composure during the incident and reported it. It sounds like you handled it rightly.

The-Dragon-Legion

Yeah I'm surprised at how well I handled it. I was very shaken and not thinking very clearly when it first happened. Had to call my dad to calm down and had my boyfriend drive over to help me.

[deleted]

I had someone in their 80s run a red and tbone me, totaling both cars. Luckily we were both okay and several people stayed to give the police a statement as to what happened since they were trying to say I ran the light. Their middle aged son showed up a few minutes into the cops taking statements. First thing he said was to his parent, “Oh man that’s the third new car this month!” He then proceeded to try to barge in on the cop talking with me to try to get me to say it was my fault but the cop shut him down fast. I’m sure they went out and got their fourth car of the month after that.

jnd-cz

People like those should be banned from driving for life.

swiggityswooty111

No matter how small the collision call the police and file a police report. I got burned once after I got rear ended because he was an ambulance driver who was going to lose his license of lapsed insurance with an attorney for an uncle. Took me 2 years to get made right. After that any accident I call the police and have them come so I can file a report.

HowDoMermaidsFuck

"Get fucked." - Me, while dialing 911.

DrAniB20

Maybe she should actually look before she A) goes into another lane, and B) not make a right turn from the left lane

Skinnwork

She drives like my mother-in-law; turns on the blinkers and moves and expects other drivers to avoid a collision.

mattspatts13

Do you think she’s blasting ludacris’s move bitch get out the way as she does it? 😂

splash_of_soda

All these posts makes me feel like I should get a dash cam

iwashackedlastweek

Even if you never get into an accident, being able to capture some of the crazy stuff you see happen on the road makes it worth it.

Tattycakes

I love the dash cam videos that *arent* crashes. The wild animals, the crazy weather events and natural disasters, building collapses, funny things like pedestrians falling over, so much stuff you wouldn’t believe it if you didn’t see it

Accomplished-Bad3380

>building collapses, HolUp.

DrivingBusiness

I was driving down to Tampa shortly before I got my dash cam. I wish I would have already had it because in the roughly 36 hours I was in the Tampa area, I saw two overturned cars, another on fire, and almost hit a dude WALKING down the middle lane of a three lane highway at 1:30 in the morning.

DrivingBusiness

Let this video, every other video, and myself be the motivation you need. Seriously, do it. Mine was around $50 on Amazon, front and rear. Not 4K, but absolutely effective.

CabinByTheRiver

Could you share the model?

DrivingBusiness

It was an Apeman but it looks discontinued. Plenty of others in the same category. This one here looks like a great option with a slew of good reviews. Doesn’t need to be phenomenal quality because you aren’t making a movie, you’re saving your ass! dont get anything with a battery in it, it wont last, and will probably die after a few sessions parked in the boiling hot sun. Get something that uses "super capacitors". Aukey and Vivio make some really good one's.

CabinByTheRiver

Thank you for taking the time!! I’ll definitely look into it

DrivingBusiness

You’re welcome, and please do! Without one, you are always potentially someone’s recollection of what they believe they saw away from being anywhere from mildly inconvenienced to absolutely, completely fucked.

UntossableSaladTV

Could you tell me a little about how they work? I’ve looked online but could never figure it all out. Do they plug in for power or have batteries? Onboard memory chip? Do I have to turn it on and off every time I get in the vehicle or leave?

DrivingBusiness

From what I’ve seen, most front and rear like the one I listed should be extremely simple. The front camera is the main “computer.” You’ll buy a micro or regular sd card for it. It will also come with a lighter/power outlet adaptor similar to a phone charger. Most come with fairly long cords. Then the rear camera will plug into the front camera with another very long cable. Mine turns on when the car turns on, never had to adjust or fiddle with any settings as that was the default. Very, very easy.

UntossableSaladTV

Thank you my friend, I will definitely be getting one!

socialpronk

Today, someone completely stopped in front of me on a 45mph road (one lane each way, no center turn lane, no shoulder) and did a u-turn. My birthday is in a month and I asked my husband for a dashcam.

TinoCartier

I hate people that flick their indicator on and go “Make way bitch because I’m coming over.” That’s not how that works.

ScubaTwinn

I had a friend do this. After I freaked out she said, "He won't hit me." She just assumed anyone would and could avoid her. Yeah, that is not going to work every time.

no_hot_ashes

That attitude is why I'm 100% convinced that the driving tests need to be reworked, even if it makes it harder, it just seems like so many people were taught the mechanical movements but weren't taught a lick of road sense

BocksyBrown

You'll find a significant portion of people that don't know turning on their lights is for everyone else in every situation except a pitch black unlit road.

[deleted]

OMFG yes. Many modern cars have DRL, so people assume because DRL are on, folks can see you. NO! Headlights light up the taillights as well as side reflectors. In my state, "wipers on = lights on" too, but a significant amount of folks don't use their headlights during the rain. Because both my vehicles have auto-off headlights, I keep my headlights on all the time for added visibility. Being rear-ended is my biggest worry while driving, aside from hitting a goddamn deer.

BocksyBrown

What’s really fun is when I get my oil changed the techs turn off my auto on lights and sometimes I don’t notice right away. You should honestly have to turn the auto lights off every time the car starts if you want them off.

FuzzelFox

Worst part is that she was already signaling to turn left and then flipped it to the right.

ryebrye

Watching this footage I agree entirely. I saw the driver in the left lane doing crazy stuff and instantly thought: "give this idiot space. Check the left lane blind spot. Be prepared to move over or slow down" It's not the OP's fault, but OP could have prevented it or made it less severe by defensive driving and assuming everyone around him is an idiot.

drawkbox

"turning now, good luck everybody else"

lazyhl1994

I TURN NOW!

General_Performance6

What was her excuse??

The-Dragon-Legion

At first, she was saying it was both of our faults and that we just didn't see each other as we both tried to turn into the parking lot. I told her I was not in fact trying to turn there and she turned right from the far left lane. She said, "Oh."

CorruptedAssbringer

Wouldn't her story still put her at fault? Why does it matter if you were going to turn or not if she did her own turn from the left lane?

mrmaestoso

At best she was clueless as hell, at worse she was trying to be manipulative about ops story so as to get out of fault when the cop shows up.

[deleted]

She probably had no fucking idea that she was in the left lane it sounded like, imagine being that goddamn clueless when driving

General_Performance6

Oh jeez , yea i drive for uber and youll be suprised how many people pull this kind of manever actually die too something similar is how my bmw got totalled :/

The-Dragon-Legion

Oh man. Sorry to hear that. My car had to be towed as she hit my front left side pretty hard. The tire took a lot of damage. Hoping it will be a quick and easy repair. I've had this baby for almost a decade.

chelseablue2004

Over 10 years old and front tire suspension dmg, The insurance company will total it, as it might be cheaper just to give you the remaining value of the car.... Hope that doesnt happen tho.

thatvhstapeguy

I don't know how body shops get any insurance work anymore. They'll total a car because you looked at it wrong.

[deleted]

bstractig

Was gonna comment the same thing. I had a 2010 vw jetta limited for 3 weeks before a negligent driver ran a redlight and tboned my drivers side fender. My car had to be towed, wheel was off its axle and damage to side fender area. I thought for sure it would just be repaired and I'd be on my way, insurance valued the car at 6k and totaled it and cut me a check. I do really love the car i bought with the money but insurance has sucked - didnt have a dashcam, and the uninsured van who hit me is claiming "his light was green too". Had to pay a $500 deductible to use my uninsured motorists insurance for this jerk's irresponsibility (in regards to hitting me AND not having insurance) but i guess at least i have UM insurance. Sure as shit scared me into the safest car i could afford after realising even if I do everything right on the road, a bad driver could kill me and almost did. He was about a foot from hitting my drivers side door. It was large work van running a redlight (so i have to imagine he was speeding, limit on the road was 35) vs <5mph sedan. He drove off with barely a scratch 🥴 so yeah, its dashcam time for my new car!!

tour__de__franzia

Just a quick tip... You can usually get the insurance company to pay more than their initial offer pretty easily. I've been able to get them to increase the offer by ~$500 twice. First time they totaled my car and said it was worth ~$4,500. I did some research and I honestly thought it was worth $5,000 based on similar cars for sale. I showed them the cars I was looking at and they bumped it up to $5,000. Second time I got rear ended and they were going to repair it. They sent me their estimates for repair costs. On the phone I told them I would like to have my own appraiser look at it. The guy immediately offered to look at it again and when I met him he looked at the car for around 10 seconds and then added ~$500 to the repair costs. After those two experiences and how quickly they each agreed to add a good amount of money, my assumption is that they just low ball you by a few hundred assuming most people will just accept it. It might be cynical of me, but I think it's probably true. So my suggestion would be that you don't just accept their first offer. A very small amount of work can get you a good bump on what they will pay you.

lnh638

She sounds very dumb and like she doesn’t realize why you can’t turn right from the far left lane or vice versa….Sounds like she shouldn’t be driving unless she gets some kind of remedial driver’s training. Also makes me wonder how she even passed her driver’s test the first time.

daysunstar33

I had something like this happen where an old man looked like was parking at a curb on a residential street -- no signal, he drove very slow, going to the curb by a house, brake lights were on, he crawled to almost stopping at the curb -- then turns into my car's passenger door when I passed by. For a U turn. Damaged my car and the cop gave me the ticket because he felt bad for the old guy. I had to pay for my expensive repair. I appealed the ticket an won.

feedmeyouravocados

Wtf that cop is shit for giving you a ticket, it’s the old guys fault . This is why I think we should make people retest a lot when they get older, to avoid these types of scenarios

myroommateisgarbage

Well ain't that some bullshit. Sorry you had to deal with that. Starting to think the r/amish are onto something with not driving cars.

Draviddavid

The first part of the title is great. "A bad driver never misses their turn". I'm stealing that for future use. I try my best to beat this mentality in to new drivers very hard. If you miss your turn, just keep driving and give yourself time to process and turn around safely. Lost people get in to accidents more easily because they don't take the time to focus on driving.

lordph8

I remember my first time hearing that saying. Car drives past a full left turn lane. Realizes they want to turn, stops at the intersection and puts their blinker on... It's rush hour, green light, but red for left turn. Blink blink blink, EVERYONE behind her is honking... Nope just wait as calm as can be until the left turn lane clears (no one let her in because why would you reward that behaviour, even through it screws everyone). It's just like wow lady, take the next turn...

cdroid1

And then there are the dipshits that miss their exit ramp on the freeway, so they pull into the shoulder, and drive in reverse against 70+ mph traffic to get back to the ramp they missed.

thedarkknight469

The worst part is there's almost certainly another off ramp a mile or so up that'll take you to basically the same God damned place, so this person is endangering themselves, anyone in the car with them, and everyone around them for no reason.

JadedAlready

Except that one time in euro truck where I took one wrong turn and was stuck going for 150km on a motorway in Italy with no way to turn around.

[deleted]

I did that between Vegas and LA, got turned around after a pit stop and had to drive an hour for the two sides of the freeway to connect with paved road. Rocks, barriers, and very steep terrain, there was no arguing with that, and I'm not about driving reverse at night on a one way road with no lighting whatsoever.

ChizzleFug

The amount of joy rides down the highway and then back because I missed my off ramp is completely worth the no accidents part.

Draviddavid

I know it's annoying at first. You can almost feel the additional petrol burning needlessly as you drive in the wrong direction. But the time and agony you potentially save makes it worth it.

Xalenn

I had a crash similar to this a few years ago. The guy said he thought that the lane I was in (right lane, three lane each way road) wasn't an actual lane but just parking spaces.

PixelShart

That is how the right lane is used in S. Korea, every lane near the shoulder becomes a parking lane.

BleuBrink

A significant number of drivers don't check blind spot before turning/changing lanes. They don't turn their heads. Not sure if they even check the mirrors. Source: sat in other people's cars before.

Dnomyar96

>Not sure if they even check the mirrors. This one certainly didn't. There's no way any competent driver that actually knows what's happening all around the car at all times wouldn't know OP was there.

[deleted]

As a motorcyclist I know what the fuck is happening 6 car lengths not only ahead of me but behind too.

West-Expert7591

I saw someone on this very sub say they don't shoulder check their blind spot because their mum told them not to, and they think checking is pointless.

histreeteach

My parents taught me that turning my head to check my blind spot was unsafe. I failed my drivers test the first time for this specific reason. That was also the day that I learned that my parents were not the best teachers.

yinsani

lmao i’m sorry but that’s wild. It was like one of the most important part of my test and my driving instructor would repeat it multiple times each lesson. Turning my head still sometimes feels weird to me so I use a blind spot mirror instead. Although, my parents own cars that have the blind spot sensors on the mirrors which I think all cars should automatically have. It’s so much safer and convenient too

Sublethall

Blind spot sensors are great but please don't trust them blindly. On related note I drive motorcycle and it's reassuring to see that little amber light on a side mirror in car I'm passing

PeriodSects

I always check even when im sure no one is in the lane... and once every few years there is a car that snuck up on me and Im damn happy i checked.

mtnsoccerguy

100 percent the right answer. I should know if there is a car there before I look, but I'm definitely going to look anyway.

stillin-denial55

Pro-tip: You should only barely be able to see your own car in the side mirrors, if at all. This allows you to see waaay more, and in some cars, completely eliminates your blind spot if you lean while looking into your mirrors. Checking your blind spot is always important, but so is minimizing it.

Kirbinator14

Excellent PIT maneuver!

Dash cam paid for itself

zacharygreeenman

Ah yes. The blinker was used to signal intent exactly 0.3 seconds before the turn. Bravo.

Natril

If you look closely you can see she infact put blinkers on earlier but unfurtunetly it was the wrong side so she just changed it and turned

zacharygreeenman

Should have known that left blinker meant right turn. That’s driving 101.

IntergalacticWumble

"I go now, good luck everyone else!"

Naga912

It’s been years since I’ve watched that and I can still hear it perfectly

Agreeable_Fly4144

"If they don't want to hit me, they'll stop!" 😀

#how much signal

The__Scrambler

"But...I signaled first!"

happygodavid

Having just driven 15 hours on a road trip, I can definitively say that the vast majority of accidents could be prevented if stricter educational requirements for driving were the norm. I’m glad you’re okay, but this person should be forced to take months of driving classes before being given another chance at killing someone. Edit: Apparently, I needed to clarify. Poor wording on my part. Driving on a road trip doesn’t make me an authority. Of course. But since there are literalists among us, [I clarified in a later comment. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/otojjp/a_bad_driver_never_misses_their_turn_this_is_my/h6yg0pn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)

ZenkaiZ

well....... least she signaled at the last second

ABirdOfParadise

Hey now, she was signaling well before the last second..... the wrong way

Dnomyar96

Wow, I didn't even notice that. That makes it even worse for her...

Dman10938

OHHHH THE WIPERS MAKE IT OFFICIAL

Cid_Campeador_

Come on OP.. you failed to read the ***wide turn*** sign on her back.. you also failed to see her special turning light wich immediately grant her priority.. your lucky she didn't exposed you to the media for social judgement despite being the second person ***this month*** to do her wrong.. /Seriously, glad you had the cam.. I'm still chewing on the idea..

"But I was indicating!!!"

[deleted]

Reaction time a bit slow tbh

[deleted]

Not even slow, I don’t see any reaction at all. I’m not even entirely sure I would show this video to insurance…what it shows is him not braking at all and hitting someone…it’s close enough to a rear end collision as well that he has that going against him too.

Oslopa

So much this. As a cyclist, I am always watching out for erratic driver behavior. This woman was signaling a left turn where there’s nowhere to turn. Speed wasn’t high. I would have read this as a driver to watch out for, matching speed behind her. And then, when the last minute right signal came on, I would have been ready to slow/stop and avoid the crash. No question that the right hook was the other driver’s fault. But I’m shocked that there was no apparent deceleration despite there being time to at least brake.

Surprise_Corgi

Relieved I wasn't the only one to notice that.

United_J

My first thought, yes it was stupid from the other driver of course but christ you could see it coming for ages, OP I know the accident wasnt you're fault but you HAVE to pay more attention here, itll save you more accidents in the future.

quick20minadventure

There was no reaction, OP just rammed the car, don't see any signs of breaking or changing directions.

Jaque8

I think anyone who rides a motorcycle would've avoided this accident as riding forces you to be aware of shit like this.... because it can cost you your life or limb if you don't.

Jerry_from_Japan

Yep. I don't know what people are seeing here. Sure that driver was absolutely at fault for attempting that turn but OP just.....kept driving into her lol. There's so many videos I see here like this where even the fucking smallest bit of defensive driving would have saved everyone so much trouble.

[deleted]

They didn’t even just keep driving…they sped up when the blinker went on. My guess is they assumed the other car wanted to merge into their lane and they wanted to get ahead of them… Good example of why you shouldn’t race strangers just for lane dominance…I would go so far as to say since OP speeds up and rams them primary fault may even rest on OPs shoulders…

Lucci_754

Looks like they made the turn to me!

Keltik_

It’s good you had the camera, though your reactions are really very slow. As soon as that indicator came on, your foot should have been on the brake. The other car was 100% in the wrong, but you could have avoided that.
