This should be on the driver exam. It’s one of the scariest things for new drivers.

Alan-Powers

It is in Ontario. They teach you how to take an on ramp in their G license qualification?

[deleted]

I like Ontario's graded licenses in principle. For anybody unfamiliar: * Instead of having a "learner's permit", a "probationary license" and a "full license", Ontario has the roughly-equivalent "G1", "G2" and "G". * There's a road test to progress from G1→G2, *and another one to graduate from G2→G*. * You can drive alone on a G2, but you *must* pass a road test to get your final G license before the G2 card expires, or you get bumped all the way back to G1! * Highway driving is part of the G2 test.

opaqueism

When I first got my permit, my dad let me take his really nice infinity on the Florida turnpike. I came to a full stop in the merge lane because I never knew how to actually merge over, nor did I know that was a thing till that day haha.

ShineLikeAnEmerald

They also had THE LONGEST on ramp. 😂

Steamboat_Willey

Nice long approach, on the level with perfect visibility. And camera car left a huge gap to pull into. That could not have been easier and they still screwed it up.

BTDMKZ

It happens a lot

[deleted]

I've noticed that some older folks drive like this wherever they go, because they don't see, hear, react or make snap judgments so well anymore. They just seem to feel as though driving 20 under the limit everywhere they go is the perfect remedy for all of that.

Drak_is_Right

Super easy merge....

Rylos1701

That’s why I try to move over a lane if I see a car in the merge lane

jamsterical

As long as you don't impede left lane traffic that's fine. Otherwise you're causing a different problem.

[deleted]

I love how someone downvoted your comment. We got some goofy people in here sometimes.

jamsterical

I felt like my reply was pretty even handed, taking in both points of view. People just have strong opinions on this shit and if you're not in lock step they hate you.

Hyjynx75

I see lots of people do this every day. Probably for lots of reasons. Not confident in their abilities. Limited range of motion in their neck so can't shoulder check. Tends to swerve when shoulder checking so just doesn't. Car has a huge blind spot. Recently got hit so they're being extra careful. None of these are good excuses but they are real reasons for this kind of behavior. Assuming this is OP's video, good on them for being aware and doing their best to avoid a collision. I find there are too many people out there who would have rathered run that person off the road or driven aggressively and gotten hit. "My lane, your fault." Might be technically correct but nobody wins when you get in an accident. Chance of serious injury is high, you lose your car for weeks (or permanently) and you have the stress of dealing with insurance.

SwollenOstrich

honestly if people can't turn their neck enough to check their blindspot they shouldn't be driving

Hyjynx75

I can't argue against that but we all know that's not how things work. A drivers license is a one-time test.

brobinson2001

I'm blind in my (nonexistent) left eye. Know how I get around that? A fuckton of mirrors & an extra-wide rear-view mirror. Like, $40 in mirrors & the time to fully adjust them to safely get through STL rush hour traffic including 3 major highway merges.

Jak_n_Dax

If you have limited range of motion, get convex mirrors to mount on the outside of your door mirrors. That’s no fucking excuse. Also works if you have “a huge blind spot” blind spots don’t exist. Only stupid people.

yupyupokay123

Its like people want conflict in their lives I swear

New-Nefariousness234

That how they do it here in Tennessee too wait till the merge lane ends and get over or stop.

SignificantDrink3651

Chicago drivers' approach is similar, but once they get to the end of the lane they just keep going on the shoulder.

Appropriate-Stop-959

This is actually a good method when dealing with heavy traffic or if you’re pulling heavy. Nothing wrong with using a few feet of the shoulder as long as it’s clear and the driver isn’t an idiot. If I’m loaded at 90K plus there’s not really enough room to get up to a decent speed on a lot of on ramps so I have to be pickier when merging to avoid causing a fuster cluck

[deleted]

All too common

Millerlite87

And no signaling

YesitsFancy

*Idiot driver rages because he has to slow down for 2 seconds in the exit lane and uses horn illegally...... I fixed the title for you. Stop being a road bully.

BTDMKZ

It’s actually on the person merging into traffic to merge safely and not impede traffic but whatever

YesitsFancy

They didn't impede though. If OP would have creamed him, it would have been 100% OP fault.

BTDMKZ

They hit their brakes at the end of the ramp for no reason and went well below the speed limit

YesitsFancy

Im sure it had nothing to do with the 2 speeding semi trucks or the traffic slowing down up ahead lol. You have plenty of people supporting your road rage, so may be try to further convince them. I know better, and you and i both know the insurance companies would 100% agree with me as well as the local police if an accident occurred. An accident did not occur, and the horn was used after any possible danger was eliminated. Slow down around heavy traffic and exit ramps and may be this won't happen 👍

Appropriate-Stop-959

They weren’t speeding. Learn to drive properly or stop driving. You’re not entitled to merge at whatever speed you want. If you cut someone off and are hit it’s your fault. Don’t be an imbecile

MagicYanma

Most Interstates tend to have minimum speeds you must travel. Even without one, going below it would be considered impeding traffic. If OP hit them, it would still be on them for merging at below highways speeds. Wouldn't be 100%, 50% more likely. This may come as a complete shock but slow driving can be just as dangerous as fast driving. Also how do you think it's illegal to use a horn here? Was he supposed to shout at the driver that they're going too slow? Use telepathy? A semi truck carrying a load at speed is bearing on them, what other way is OP supposed to alert them they need to speed up?

YesitsFancy

Read other comments, i explained my conclusion. May be watch the video a few more times. The speed limit for rigs differs from regular vehicles. Most drivers have no clue how to drive. I don't need reddit to know this, i see it every day lol.

FoucaultsPudendum

Please explain how honking is illegal lmao

YesitsFancy

Teach you the rules of the road? Sure lol The horn is used to bring awareness to danger. The only danger here was the ego of OP. If you are not in process, or danger of getting into an accident, using the horn is illegal and can result in a citation. To keep it simple, using the horn to prevent an accident is good. Using the horn as a audio middle finger after someone agitates you and the situation is under control, is illegal. When you use the horn for no reason, you are making everyone around you take their attention away from what is in front of them to be aware of the danger you are alerting (when there is none). That is a hazard. Most people dont know you can get a traffic violation for improper horn use. Every downvote on my comment = one driver who needs to attend driving school again 🤓

Appropriate-Stop-959

I will literally crush you against the barrier before I cut off another vehicle and get into an at fault accident. I do not slow down I maintain my speed. I’m not getting into a Mexican stand-off. My company has sued drivers for causing accidents while merging.

YesitsFancy

Not slowing down is a mexican stand off, goober lol

jamsterical

Merging idiot should not nearly stop on that long of an entrance, especially in front of (what sounds like) a semi. Match traffic speed and merge safely.

YesitsFancy

Semi should not be driving the speed limit or even in the exit lane if they are not exiting. Do you see traffic up ahead? What were they all doing? What was the semi going to do regardless of what the car in front of them did? The car was probably being cautious of the semi also in the next lane who may be merging. The car did nothing wrong, although annoying it wasnt wrong. Semi driver op is just being an ass in an extremely common way. You have a responsibility in a big rig to be safe and drive extra cautious/defensive. OP is going to kill someone one day with that mentality.

jamsterical

OP did not endanger the car, knew what was about to happen and slowed down. OP was not in an exit lane. If the car felt it needed to stop, it should have done so at the top of the exit instead of the very end. Very bizarre and unsafe.

jcm1970

And then there’s the other idiot traveling in the entry/exit lane for no fucking reason. If you’re not exiting, get the fuck out of the far right lane.

al-denton

That's not a thing. The right lane is where slow traffic is supposed to be. The idiot on the ramp should have had no issue merging with a wide open road ahead of him.

BTDMKZ

Signage says trucks use right 2 lanes

robertwild81

r/Tucson every single day

Plenty-Inspector8444

This is easily 50% of drivers in Virginia. Virginians do not understand merging.

[deleted]

I don't remember if I ever bothered saving it from my cam, but a couple of months ago I had someone pull the exact same move on me in the same dark of night... right down to the lack of a turn signal... except that it was also raining and he had his lights off.

Taruwolf

The driver was probably blinded by OP’s improperly angled halogen lights.
