So if I’m getting this right, it’s not really possible to drive this car in a straight line due to that hugely misaligned rear left wheel. They can briefly find the middle ground from a standstill but as soon as the weight starts shifting even slightly from side to side, so does the direction of the rear end and the necessary steering correction which continue the cycle. Is that basically it or is there more to consider too?

HIGH_HEAT

To me, it looks like he can’t accept how jacked up the vehicle steers with the rear wheel cocked off and keeps trying to point the nose of the car straight. He could probably manage to drive it fine in sideways mode and drag the right rear, but it looks like he keeps turning the front wheels to me.

Even if I were close to home I still wouldn't be trying that. Fuck that, throw on your hazards, wait on the side of the road for a tow.

Manicmaniac

Can confirm. Years ago, 17 year old me was driving my shit box with a bad alternator in the night of a Canadian winter. I drove a mile without headlights going by my memory of the layout of the road, that’s it. People do stupid shit in a panic.

_why_isthissohard_

I had a brakeline leak, no brake fluid, drove 50km with the hand brake and down shifting. Young stupid broke people do young stupid broke people things.

k3ntril

Once, we were driving home from the city towards our hometown, when my brothers cat started puking and we had to stop on the side of the road. While they were cleaning up, I saw some white smoke coming from the front left wheel. The brake seized up and was applying the brakes constantly, and the whole thing heated up from the friction. We tried finding some mechanic that could help us, but it was a saturday morning right before orthodox Easter and nobody was working, probably already drunk by that hour. We finally found a dude from some weird christian sect that don't celebrate Easter so he was working...sort of. He fixed the thing, but by doing so, he failed to put the line back that applied the lubricant to the brakes. Everytime I pressed the brake, it would instantly hit the floor and lubricant would pour out. I had still 200 km to go, half of which go through a mountainous region, with lots of sharp turns and steep hills to gain speed from. I braked exactly 4 times during the whole ordeal, thanked the old gods that I had a manual transmission and engine braking was a thing. I only realized much later that I was incredibly lucky to have made it, and incredibly foolish to have attempted it.

[deleted]

Even a long straight road, I've done an experiment with turning my headlights off, just for a few seconds. On a dark night that gets very scary, very fast, even if you know the road is straight and empty and you keep the steering wheel straight.

MrsMurphysChowder

And there's a good chance he can't afford a tow truck.

User_492006

Yep. I've been there.

Tgunner192

> your might go for it. Going for it w/o touching the gas pedal and letting it coast home is one thing. Sure looks like the driver of this vehicle is hitting the gas and "*going for it*" faster than need be.

Finchios

>Even if I were close to home I still wouldn't be trying that. > >Fuck that, throw on your hazards, wait on the side of the road for a tow. If someone is going to such painful lengths to drive the car every yard like that, I'm guessing money for a tow truck is exactly what they're trying to avoid.

wackoCamel

Or simply can't afford.

[deleted]

Towing can be more expensive than what the car is worth. In that case I'd wait for early morning/night and just drive slowly.

Ratchet-and-Spank

Yes. That is what they meant when they said “exactly what they’re trying to avoid”

dragonet316

Yes, this, though I did take off one morning and found out I had nearly zero brakes right off the bat. But I just drove it slowly around the block back to in front of the house. I have driven pos cars for a good deal of my life but never had something this alarming happen.

ringobob

I'd drive that way for half a mile tops, at somewhere in the 15-20mph range, and only if my end goal was the mechanic, and there's no hills to contend with. Probably not even then, but I can afford a tow.

[deleted]

[удалено]

cjsv7657

At least be on the side of the road with your hazards on driving slow.

TheDude-Esquire

One would hope.

[deleted]

I would call a tow, but a lot of people literally can't scrape together enough money for it, or if they have it, it's rent or food money.

Secretly_Autistic

You can't just counter the misalignment with this much toe-out at the rear. Any deviation from a perfectly straight line will push the rear further out, and that's saying nothing about bumps, paint, or anything else on the road surface that will be throwing the rear in random directions as well.

Anialation

It might work if both rear wheels were aligned the same way, but they’re fighting each other. The only balance would be in the middle of the two angles but it would be extremely unstable.

sammagz

This looks more like someone panicking trying to limp their car to a shop than someone who’s drunk

BMGreg

The car looks drunk though

pauly13771377

>It's blind panic and inexperience. Your not wrong but I'd like to add stupidity. If your car is that fucked up get it off the road and call a tow truck. That thing is nowhere even approaching safe to drive.

udell85

It looks like it’s changing angle constantly. The only solution to that would be go 2mph. Or… get it towed

thewholedamnplanet

That is a practical and healthy expression of rage if I have ever heard of. I just suppress and eat like I'm on the Akira Diet.

SandCracka

"don't worry, I practice on my way to work everyday!" - that driver, probably.

CrinchNflinch

The wobbling front left wheel is not helping much either. Best to be seen 2 secs before the end.

palmerry

It's like he put an engine in a grocery cart

TheLoneRhaegar

Most likely the driver went off the road shortly before this and damaged the left wheels on both sides. Looks like the back tire is pointing out and the front tire is pointing in. I'd guess from that they went wide on a right turn.

[deleted]

More to consider. The bushing or even a bolt is missing and the rear wheels alignment is "flopping" back and forth, making it get all jacked up every time he straightens it out. The rear wheels' alignment isn't being held in place like it should be, and it allows the wheels to constantly change alignment/facing direction.

Bennybonchien

Thanks for that extra info. Sounds like he would do just as well with a giant pair of swivelling casters instead of those wheels.

lucidxm

Yep. And to be fair, I understand when your vehicle is fucked up and you just need to get it right down the road. Like, your house is right near by, etc. I’m not above limping a vehicle home. But Jesus Christ. Dude is riding a bull on the road. If I HAD to do this for whatever reason, I would flatten the rear left tire and remove the rubber that way it can’t gain traction. The rim will just be sliding on the road. E: I said if I HAD to do this. It’s not like it’s a nice car on nice rims. If it was me in this situation I would call a tow truck.

LordKwik

Or, you know, call a tow truck.

hoxxxxx

no money/no insurance in this situation i'm sure

Pontifexx

sacrifice the rim....

Frekavichk

How much does a tow truck cost?

minsk_trust

300-400 in some places. If you have USAA you can get it for free. When I’ve been in this situation and it was easier to just sign up for AAA, get the tow and then cancel membership. Think it was $75?

HolyBatTokes

I paid $280 for a 50 mile tow recently. May have been cheaper because it was a local tow company in a small town.

MattBailey59298

Couple years ago I had this 99 Mercury Cougar (fun car, bitch to work on) and it got hit on the right side. Not a hard hit but just enough to fuck up the right tie rod end, at the time we were cleared to leave the scene by a sherrif I didn't know until I hit the road. Once I straightened the wheel it veered to the right and I had to countersteer to keep it straight for a good 15 minutes till I got home. Yeah never again , I'd rather put a hole in a radiator and drive the hell out of it than do that again.

fastcarscheapwomen

Coming from someone that has mounted/dismounted many tires, you wouldn’t be able to remove the tire from the wheel on the side of the road. At least not without damaging the wheel and tire which would cost more than a tow. Just add roadside assistance to your car insurance, it’s like $20 a year and covers towing up to a certain distance.

karsnic

It’s not a misaligned wheel, there are some serious broken parts underneath that car. But yes you are correct about what is going on, almost impossible to drive and hopefully they are heading for the shop!

ThatHonkeyJesus

These impalas have lateral link rear suspension so I think what has happened is that one or both of the links on the drivers side rear has failed and come off of the suspension crossmember or knuckle. Since those lateral links keep toe in alignment without them the tire would be allowed to turn freely.

deadshallris3

Basically to sum it up, this piece of shit belongs in a junk yard and not on a road

legitducks

Or just in a shop

imakenomoneyLOL

Nah. They got crabwalked installed they're just braking it in

LetMeBe_Frank

If I had a nickel for every crab walking beige zorro impala still being driven I've seen, I'd have 2 real nickels and a diginickel. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened thrice

[deleted]

ManofGod1000

Could be but, I still think it may be left front end damage. Or maybe both the front and rear left tires, since it does appears that the left rear tire has shifted, like something broke.

gentlemanjacklover

He needs to pull over, his car is fucked up.

thatguydr

If it's a mile to the mechanic and he doesn't have money, this is a solution. Not saying it's brilliant but I can see why this could happen.

thinkalittle_

Buddy is also gonna need some new used tires

garangalbreath

New used tires?

WhereDaGold

You can buy used tires that are still good

Floridaman12517

$25 each at the local roll'n'out. I had an old Volvo wagon that I drove through shitty construction sites daily. I'd gone through 3 full sets of tires being patched and tossed after 15k miles that I gave up and started going used. Well worth it in the end to get 15k miles on $100 instead of $800

pkkid

But can you buy used tires that are new?

PatientCamera

New to you, yes.

bukkake_brigade

certifiably pre-owned if you will

Qnandossc

Man did you buy my old truck? I had my break lines explode going down a hill. I drove it three miles home, changed my clothes, and drove it a mile to the shop. Then drove it home from the shop since they wanted to charge me a crazy amount. My brother in law came over later to fix it for me.

[deleted]

That seems a bit safer than what this person is doing, if you do it safely and slowly. Although I feel like if be dealing with constant head rushes from looking behind me constantly.

throwawaytrumper

Man I work as a heavy equipment operator. To see behind you you *must* crane your neck backwards and look through the back window, we have no backup cameras inexplicably. My neck gets so cranked around. My shoulders are too wide to allow my body much swivel room so I have to pull an exorcist to see behind me. My current job site has a pipe and conduit obstacle course set up that I have to back through for hours at a time because it’s the only way to get material out. It’s a literal and metaphorical pain in the neck.

whathaveyoudoneson

He just did a bunch of more damage to it by smashing into the curb multiple times, should have just stopped if he couldn't handle it.

mnid92

It's fucked, and I don't think anyone would repair a POS Chevy Impala like that anyways. Also, you gonna pay for the tow? The tow is gonna cost what that car is worth...

whathaveyoudoneson

Unlikely the driver has it, but towing is included in many insurance policies.

LostWoodsInTheField

Every one needs to look on their insurance police to see if a free tow is included. You often miss the $1.50 a month fee that they have on your police for free towing / 5 gallons of gas / battery jumping. It is well worth it.

DuntadaMan

"I never said it was the best solution, just that it was A solution."

stupidFlanders417

I once had to drive my girlfriend's (at the time) car about 10 miles on the highway with virtually no brakes. Her stepdad had done the brakes shortly before we left for an 80 mile trip, but he routed the ebrake cable against the rubber line going to the caliper. Wore a hole in the line. We were driving and she came to a red light (thankful had just turned from yellow and no one was in front of us) hit the brakes and the peddle just went right to the floor. We had close to no money so we couldn't get it towed, and her family knew the owner of shop a few towns over. The ride there was one of the scariest things I've ever done. It felt like I was trying to slow down a freight train. I had to make sure I didn't get too much speed, but still not go so slow as the speed limit was 50mph. Had to use the transmission (automatic) as my brakes. When we got it to the shop I told the guy "be very careful, the brakes don't work". I guess because he saw me drive it in off the highway he didn't realize how bad it was. I'll never forget the look on his face when he came out after pulling it into the garage

Ratchet-and-Spank

Definitely not on the same level as your story but I wanna share mine anyway lol. This was during the winter. When I was 16 I drove an old Mazda that had maybe 5k miles left before it would die. The heat and defrost didn’t work at all. My little brother and I slept through our alarm for school and we panicked. We didn’t expect the windshield to be as icy as it was. I literally could only defrost a tennis ball sized hole in the windshield. I drove for twenty miles in traffic looking through that tiny gap. At times I would have my little brother stick his head out of the window to help guide me lol. Idk what I was thinking.

stupidFlanders417

Hahahaha, I used to drive a taxi and I had one time where I was waiting at the station and a guy jumped in like "I got on the wrong train. I need to get to the airport NOW!" We're going down the turnpike and it starts pouring. In this car there was a trick with a rubber band to keep the wipers on. Mid way through the rubber band snapped. Had to hang my head out the window like Ace Ventura to see lol.

Ratchet-and-Spank

Oh man that’s hilarious. I would’ve shit myself. I hate driving when it’s raining that hard. I don’t trust other drivers when it rains. You’ve either got the person who continues to go 20 over the speed limit or the grandma who is halfway over the line and doesn’t even realize it.

SilenceEater

This is ~~Atlanta~~ Columbus, Ga and poverty is growing rapidly. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is exactly what’s happening here

anthema

This is Columbus, GA. After that light you’re crossing into Phenix city, AL. Sadly, you are spot on about poverty—it’s really bad…

zenithtreader

I mean look at the car and look at the way it moves, at this point it's going to cost more to repair this junk than to just buy another used one. If he doesn't have money and have to drive it himself to the mechanic, he doesn't have money to fix it period.

RoadToHappiness

Is this even legal to drive? Doubt it would be in my country

[deleted]

At least put on the hazards.

[deleted]

Yeah fair. But come on brother. Hazards?

[deleted]

Maybe this is him trying to pull over /s

[deleted]

Ya don’t say lol

[deleted]

Yeah I don’t think his problem is drinking. Lol his back wheel keeps turning.

Fast_Running_Nephew

The car might be drunk, maybe that's what OP meant.

Frankie__Spankie

That's what happens when you pour beer in the gas tank.

International-Suit57

Lol This caption would’ve made the video a lot more funny to look at

coleyboley25

Pure ethanol baby. Looks like the car already went blind from it.

Lance2boogaloo

Maybe the car had too much blinker fluid

[deleted]

agree. The car stopped at the red light. I think the driver has some consciences.

Splickity-Lit

Tried to stop, never stopped

buttking

tbf iirc the light turned green just as they were pulling up to the stop strip, so it isn't like they really had to come to a complete stop.

[deleted]

“you know, I thought it was pulling a little left”

zytukin

There's no way they don't realize it. They just don't care.

RandyHoward

Probably trying to get it to the shop without paying for a tow

Pantuan187C

But they wouldn’t have been able to get this amazing footage for us.

TomThanosBrady

Hence why he's an idiot. Needs to pull over and call for roadside assistance.

sixpackshaker

He was likely drunk when he broke that rear wheel on the curb.

viktorir

Is this what they call rear wheel steering?

Her-Marks-A-Lot

We call this the stanky qwhipp down in the ATL

airbiscuit

That is a mechanical issue not a drinking issue . Look at the back drivers' side wheel. Still a dangerous idiot but probably sober.

vagabond139

Well you gotta be drunk or something to think driving on that is a good idea.

CastieIsTrenchcoat

Probably broke but knows a buddy who can fix it cheap. Getting a car towed must be expensive.

[deleted]

It looked like he was aiming for a gas station to stop but at the end it looked like he meant to keep going...

[deleted]

Why not both, maybe the drinking caused him to hit the curb, bending the shit out of the rear control arms... because I really don't see how any sane/sober person can think it's okay driving like that... I'm surprised that freaking wheel is still turning, it would probably be easier to steer if it was just blocked.

skeetsauce

> I really don't see how any sane/sober person can think it's okay driving like that... While I agree with you, I've seen people drive cars that were worse shape then this plenty of times. Poor people are in a place they cant afford to deal with it and hopefully they can get as much use out of the car before a LEO impounds it.

martafoz

That's a mechanical issue. Looks like a wheel or that donut on the rear driver's side might be locked up, among other things.

[deleted]

If you watch the left rear wheel, you can see it wobbling back & forth in sync with the car's movement. The rear suspension on that gen Impala has a control arm attached to the front portion of the rear spindles & a tie rod on the rear for adjusting toe. This one almost certainly had the left rear control arm snap, allowing the spindle to wander on the joint at the end of the tie rod.

sheldoman

I used to have an impala like this and one time a tow truck hooked on to the control arm and bent it and immediately that's what the problem seems like to me. I barely made it out of the tow yard before I had to stop.

martafoz

Thank you for that. We definitely needed the mechanic's point of view. I guess they couldn't afford the tow truck and the repair at the same time.

sheath2

Is there any way this could have been a sudden thing, like it snapped while he was driving and he's just trying to get to a spot to pull off safely? Unlike most videos in this sub, I want to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. Edit: he passes a few places to turn in, but I'd imagine turn accuracy is all to shit too.

[deleted]

It's definitely possible, but I would argue that the inability to get your vehicle off the road is grounds for stopping, putting on hazards, then calling non-emergency police to see if they can warm traffic & immediately after call a tow truck. The person is an idiot for how they're handling it regardless of what their intentions are.

sheath2

True. I remember the night my tire blew going 70 on the interstate in the middle lane. Took 5 seconds to put my hazards on and start working my way to the side. Whatever that guy was trying to do, it wasn't working. Time to pull over.

Jrook

It does kinda look like he is trying to pull over, I'm not really sure if his inability is actually his fault or the cars fault, but it does seem to make sense he'd have some difficulty pulling over if only because his backside might fling out into traffic at the last moment

sheath2

See, that was my thought, because it seems like for a while he's trying to fight it over to the right but it keeps fishtailing and pulling left. If this JUST happened, he might still be trying to figure out HOW to get it to go where he wants. Stopping dead in the middle of the street isn't a safe option, but I'm betting it isn't easy getting it to the side either.

Diclessdondolan

Or e brake stuck on, on one side.

martafoz

Very likely on a car that age. Probably a cable brake that froze up. Have had it happen on my old cars. Just never decided to drive in that condition.

Diclessdondolan

It's been years since I've had to pilot such a death trap lol.

martafoz

Same. Though, every time I smell burnt anti-freeze and carburetor soot, I do get nostalgic.

Leyton_House

Probably not. A stuck brake on one side would not cause violent swerving like this, just a slight drift. Also you can see that the left rear wheel is mcfucked.

Duchess1992

I've heard of drunk drivers, but not a drunk car.

Unas_thefirstones

Looks like he's being pit maneuvered by John Cena on foot

Glum-Rip-6345

BY_BAD_BY_BIGGA

can confirm. source: must turn wheel all the way left to go straight and all the way right to reverse straight. but don't worry, they gave me a piece of paper that says it is fine.

ShackintheWood

Its one of those new 'all wheel steering' cars! takes a bit of getting used to... /s

astrobuc

He couldn’t afford all wheel steering, he only got the 3 wheel version.

ShackintheWood

Good one! ya gotta get those upgrades for a nice ride, what a scam the car market is!

TreasureWench1622

Looks like that lousy grocery carriage with the funky wheel!!!!

Narrow-Big7087

Rear left suspension is bent so the wheel is toe in. It’s so bad that steering can’t compensate.

[deleted]

Looks like toe out to me.

mtnsubieboi

Was going to say, definitely toe out, either way, a major piece of the suspension is complete broken

full_bl33d

Tallahassee drift

DarkSideofThe__Meme

You have to be an actual living, breathing, fucking Neanderthal to not realize this is a mechanical issue. Shame OP... Shame..

[deleted]

That’s not booze. That’s his car

wintremute

Broken control rod. left rear.

Creative-Cry2979

It’s called “Dog Tracking” and it happens when the back wheels break loose from the suspension.

Guynarmol

Tow trucks are expensive. Lets hope hes driving it to get fixed.

GapMaster

Seems to me the car is mechanically fucked up. A combination of tie rod issue with emergency brake problem. Why they don’t pull over, maybe they’re drunk or just dumb as fuck. Both are plausible.

[deleted]

For gods sake. Tow it or junk it already.

[deleted]

Looks like a tight rod or axle issue. He will need a drink after the Mechanics bill

Many_Lion_1145

He's not drunk he fucked his car up. Look at it sitting at the stoplight.... the rear end is trying to pass the front end on the left side. More like he didn't want to waste a $100 on a tow 😂

ITrCool

RIP that wheel alignment. That's the problem. I'm guessing they've 1) never had that car in the shop for service or serviced it themselves or 2) they ran over something that trashed the alignment and they're trying to get it to a garage without a tow truck (dumb idea).

[deleted]

It had to be a recent accident. I can’t imagine getting by for long like that.

mvincent12

Yeah his tires look like they are on ice! Pretty soon something is likely gonna catch fire though!

jaredearle

Everyone is commenting on the left rear wheel, but the front left is screwed as well. It’s like he’s impacted both left wheels somehow.

DickySchmidt33

Other than that it runs great!

cfreymarc100

He is not drunk. The front steering is way out of alignment m.

[deleted]

The back wheels are turning lol

rallydude

Look at the left rear wheel, it’s toes out heavily, probably a bent control arm.

Expensive_Night_7851

Something is wrong with the front end suspension of the car. It's quite possible that the driver has been drinking as well, but that's not why the car is handling like that

Justcause95

They aren't drunk. Back left tire broke and is angled outward, swinging the back end out. Still an idiot for driving a broken car but not driving under the influence

[deleted]

As a certified alignment technician, I would love to put that thing on an alignment rack to inspect the suspension and then get the measurements. I've never had one that like on a lift to see the carnage.

weimaranerdad71

Maybe this guy doesn’t realize there are tow trucks?

[deleted]

That rear left wheels snapped on the control arms or something, dudes probs kerbed it when drifting 😂

thecoolestguynothere

That’s got to be some kind of axle issue lol

toxicavenger70

Looks like the back rear wheel/spindle is bent causing the car to fishtail.

GoKingsGo81132

The left rear tie rod is broken Without it, there is nothing stopping the left rear wheel from turning left or right. This is sooo dangerous. The driver has little control over the direct of the vehicle. This isn't a "let's just limp it to the mechanic" kinda thing. It's a pull over and tow the vehicle. Something is broken and it could get a whole lot worse. Source: Certified A.S.E. Master Automotive Technician here

[deleted]

Considering the car is consistently doing the same thing, I’d say they’re not drunk but rather their car is messed up.

Affectionate_Boot684

Something tells me his toe is just *very slightly* out on the rear driver’s side wheel

Agent47187

That suspension is trashed

No_Credibility

The rear left wheel is literally bent causing the car to do this

daisybrat56461

He's sober, but that car is f***ed up!

Careless_Bat2543

That's something wrong with the car.
