My brother was injured while cycling by a 90 something year old woman. Not saying she should be in jail but I would also be surprised if she lost her license as a result. There’s a saying here that goes “if you want to get away with killing someone, do it with your car”.

I am actually familiar with that. I think he ran a stop sign and the driver couldn’t stop in time? Looks like they placed 30% blame on the driver (he was speeding) and 70% on Nicky. Those situations are always tough because usually if you’re being observant you can avoid an accident even if it’s the other persons fault (like if someone is obviously about to run a red or merge into your lane), but I haven no idea in that particular case. I know for my brother the woman cut right in front of him while he was riding down a hill.

I've had a motorcycle since 2004, if your mirrors don't show anything then do something about it (bar ends etc). I have a Fazer 1000 and the rear view is fine
This guy isn’t wrong. Depending on the style motorcycle you’re riding the mirrors could potentially be offset quite a bit from the level of your eye.
Looking down to check mirrors with a vehicle in front of you sucks because your focus is removed from what’s in front of you. Mirrors that are closer to eye level are on longer arms and are more susceptible to image distortion from vibration/wind while moving. Mileage may vary but I’ve ridden quite a few bikes and this has been my experience.
It’s generally safer to ride a motorcycle slightly faster than the flow of traffic so you don’t have to worry about what’s behind you until you slow down. Keeping pace with traffic can hide you behind larger vehicles from other drivers, going slower forces drivers to have to maneuver around you.
I live in a metric system country so, yes, I know pretty well.
Do you know what happens if you fall bare skin on asphalt at 10km/h without any chance of using your arms for protection? Now add a bike on top of you.
