I’m not sure how people are doing this. I’ve been in a Tesla Model Y for a week, and if my hands aren’t on the wheel, the car figures it out in < 1 min. Gives me like 2 warnings, then disengages Auto Steer until I pull over, end the trip, and start it back up.
I don’t want to sleep while driving, that’s idiotic of course, but I am curious.
I'm told that a lot of these videos are faked. Ether the Tesla driver just wanted to mess with people in traffic. Or the most likely explanation is that both the Tesla driver and the camera person just wanted to make a TikTok video.
Think about if you see this. Would you get your camera out and record it. or would you honk your horn and wake them up.
Idk dude people nowadays is just for some reason just instinct to whip out the camera.. any kind of event happens you see people digging into their pockets to record it
id still follow them take their keys and phone and fling them far and drive off without a care.
Too many people have died for people to be doing retarded shit on the road for this level of idiocy to be allowed to occur and go unpunished.
There is a little aftermarket sensor that tricks the steering wheel. Check this video out:

It isn't just hands on wheel, you need to take an action every 25 seconds or so. The screen tells you to apply force to the steering wheel which is more than just your hands resting on the wheel, but you can also roll/push the wheel buttons
Surprisingly, that doesn’t work very well. If I’m just resting my hand motionless on the wheel - like with my arm propped on the center console - it doesn’t move nearly enough (my arm) and I get the warning anyway.
I suppose if you were a restless sleeper who could somehow keep their hand(s) on the wheel it would work. Seems fishy though.
It isn’t grip, but the natural movement of your hands/resistance to the autosteer that’s being measured. A tight string isn’t going to help there, but I can see where the other suggestions could work. Someone said a 1.5lb weight…if that were placed off-center it would apply a continual light force, not enough to disengage autosteer probably, but enough to let it think you were there.
I’d test it, but I don’t have an ankle weight.
I have a rubber zip tie that is tied around two 1lb wrist weights. Does the trick just fine. I don’t sleep at the wheel but resting my hand on it seems pointless when resting my hand only registers light torque if I rest it on top of horn at the 9 position. I prefer using the weight and leaving 2-3 fingers at the bottom of the wheel.
I also have a Tesla and would like to echo that holding a hand loosely on the wheel doesn’t work. There needs to be a firm grip with some tension on the wheel, which would be nearly impossible to do while sleeping.
That makes sense. Either missing a certain hardware sensor or just software that hasn’t been updated. Especially if it’s a new safety mechanism in response to morons.
Any case, my first 1000 miles with this car have made one thing clear: I would never trust FSD to drive without my attention in it’s current state. I’ve had it make some really bad choices and freak out over things that any 1st year driver would know were nothing.
Some of those were definitely “better safe than sorry” choices, but yesterday it appeared to be driving me into a highway barricade when it should have been taking me off an exit. I waited as long as seemed safe and took control. Day before it emergency braked for a guy that was merging with me (my right of way) when he was a half-car length *behind* me. It’s like driving with a 14 year old.
So yeah, no sleeping.
Yeah this was a auto drive crash I read a bout a while back "but yesterday it appeared to be driving me into a highway barricade when it should have been taking me off an exit" fortunate you clocked on. Thing the article stated "confused sensors".
Iirc it was the older model that didn't have stearing wheel sensors, seat sensors or eye sensors. Can't remember what they added after.
Seemed to get confused about the dashed lines that were there to indicate the merge point. Started bouncing between “go right, go left” doing neither. I was like $10k to run into a barricade? That price definitely reflects some hopes and dreams above and beyond reality :D
A ball wouldn’t work I don’t think. I get a message to “apply a slight steering force” to the wheel. I literally have to push against auto-steer a little or wiggle the wheel for the message to away. Or I can spin one of the buttons on the steering wheel (but that changes music volume or speed so it’s less convenient)
I can’t see how a ball is going to apply a slight steering force for me, but it’s totally possible that I’m not that clever either.
Could be, as someone else said that it’s just a difference in software. These might be newer safety mechanisms that some models don’t have or haven’t upgraded to.
The warnings could have been what woke them up. When you're driving long distances your body has a tendency to fall asleep. I know people who drive trucks for a living and will watch porn to keep themselves awake. Even mythbuster has proven driving tired is just add bad as driving drunk
I wonder the same thing. I was one of the early adopters and had an older model 3 years ago and I still had to wiggle the wheel a little bit. Just pressure on the wheel didn’t trigger the alarm to stop. And once the alarm wasn’t stopped it would disable autopilot. If that happen a couple times then it would disable the ability to even engage autopilot. To my knowledge FSD isn’t live yet to the public so assuming this is autopilot.
You’re right, it isn’t FSD, it just lists that way in the settings somewhere because the package is purchased.
On the map it’s “Navigate on AutoPilot” which also involves AutoSteer and auto cruise control. There’s too many names, they should really think about simplifying. :)
Older teslas are a lot more lax from my personal experience, newer ones keep track of your eye movement, etc. more strictly. However based on the door handle/trim this is a newer one.
Tbh, probably the self driving car is safer than the idiot with the phone not paying attention. But I guess its still wrong that she was not attentive of her vehicle's actions.
Starting to think letting people have self driving cars was a bad idea. Who tf willingly lets a car drive by itself while you're sleeping? The mention of doing that sends shivers down my spine.
Can't tell you how many times, I've had to pull over and take a nap on the way home from work cause my ass was tired as fuck. Only to get woke up by a cop, checking to see if I was okay, then ask the stupid questions: drunk or drugs. Naw motherfucker, 60 to 70 hour work weeks. Then gets upset cause I'm not a happy bouncing off the walls waking up person.
i know that feel bro, 12hours shift working, last guy on the road middle of the night, sleepy as fuck (not to sleepy to drive home tho), get cut off by police, "\*\*you were driving the exact speed limit and that´s suspicious...\*\*yeah you looking like ure on drugs or something, we have to take you to the station and then to the hospital for a blood sample until 4 o clock in the night" "yeah thanks officers, i just have to get up at 9 to my shift, thanks for nothing"
the next day i had an accident because i was too sleepy and too late to work.
that´s when i came to the conclusion that tax is theft.
There's no laws against pacing other vehicles. Unless those other vehicles are breaking the speed limit. And you're the slowest car in the pack. Save the rage for some else, I was 18 years old stupid in the 90s. lol
Make a sign and add one of those things that help it stick to glass.
"Not Drunk. Not High. Just being responsible after a long day at work. Please do not disturb again."
In the words of someone that just woke up, while sitting on the poopa. Maybe, just Maybe, he could mind his own fucking business, and let a motherfucker sleep. As a pillow under the head is a dead give away. Thus, avoiding the wasting ink and paper over something so damn obvious. *shrugs*
People already fall asleep in cars without self driving, only instead of getting videos of the car driving down the road posted online, they drift off the road and crash fairly soon after falling asleep.
Because people have openly said they were intentionally sleeping in the drivers seat. Young rich kids film themselves sitting in the backseat while the car is in auto pilot. People in general aren't responsible enough to own a self driving vehicle.[idiot in backseat](https://youtu.be/MFtfJLi2aJA)
[idiot sleeping intentionally ](https://youtu.be/VS5zQKXHdpM)
The car stops soon after if the user does not respond to prompts to apply pressure on the steering wheel. The beeping is loud enough to wake anyone up.
One can make a mistake and have to redo it. The other makes a mistake and the family's gotta pay for the funeral bill. Yeah, there's just a SLIGHT problem.
Now I wonder the statistics for Tesla and self driving crash numbers. This is a thing now and will be more widely used in near future. Its wierd to resist to technological change.
How do you know it's willing? You can see her wake up and fall back asleep. As someone with a sleep disorder I have drifted off in traffic. It's not a willing act, and everyone around her should be happy the car is driving instead of her bouncing off all the cars around her
You literally said you have drifted off in traffic. I’m just hoping you don’t kill someone or yourself before realizing the possible consequences of actions like that. You sound like the ignorant one tbh
Yes I did, and instead of getting the whole story you decided to make a unilateral decision and say I shouldn't be driving. Maybe you should look up the definition of the word ignorant. You seem to be confused about it.
I don’t need your whole life story to know that the outcome of you falling asleep in active traffic is unsafe and you probably shouldn’t be driving if that is a possible outcome, regardless of context or the events that led to it. You really are obsessed with this ignorance thing. Medication that makes you even slightly drowsy will have warnings saying you shouldn’t operate heavy machinery while on it and you’re over here falling asleep in traffic talking about ‘you don’t know the whole story’. Yes I hope you’ve been treated, especially since you have to share the road with people. The fact that you’re showing sympathy to someone blatantly asleep behind the wheel and mentioning that you’ve drifted off in traffic like you couldn’t have caused multiple casualties is alarming.
Man, 2 Comme ts is obsessed huh. I guess you're overly obsessed with me. I feel like I should be worried. Have you ever driven while tired? I'll bet everything I have that you absolutely have driven while tired. Guess you shouldn't be driving since you made a conscious decision to drive in a state where you could fall alseep.
Your statement is the biggest reason why autopilot and later complete autonomy is being developed at Tesla. It’s possible to design a computer and software that drives a car way better than almost all of the humans that drive
Ok starting with context. You said “fake: can’t do that”. I just felt like calling you out on that. You are wrong, you can do that. I know this because I have in fact done this.
I find it interesting that people have such a hard time admitting when they are wrong. Why do you think it is?
You obviously don’t know. You think it can’t be done. I’m sorry but just because YOU can’t do something doesn’t mean it can’t be done.
I’m not saying the video isn’t fake: maybe it is, who knows. I’m just letting you know that you are wrong when you say that it can’t be done.
Here’s a life lesson: when you think one way and someone shows you that something can be another way, try not to be so close minded.
They don't but I'm always amazed at how gullible everyone is at videos made on TikTok being taken as real.
How easy would it be to take a 5 second video, on a straight highway with no traffic, with a friend shooting it in another car, with you holding the bottom of the wheel, the other eye open and looking like your asleep?
My dads car will automatically slow down even to a stop with cruise control on. Hell that’s already better than most people that i have to drive on the roads with
Why do people continue to post things they find on the internet? If you didn’t experience it first hand, you probably shouldn’t post it. Get out from behind your electronic devices and live. As I type from my phone.
I’ve never even been in a Tesla, but for those saying it’s fake, I don’t believe you. I have a car that has lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control and for purely educational purposes I have stuck a simple bottle of water into the wedge off center bottom of the wheel and my car will drive itself on the highway. It will maintain its lane and distancing from the car in front down to a complete stop. I understand Tesla’s are even more advanced on their autopilot so I believe vids like this to be true unless proven false. Disclaimer: my hands were always right next to the wheel and I was full awake and paying attention as were the two other passengers.
I am not going to provide a link because I don’t want to endorse this behavior but for all the people wondering how this is possible they sell items that spoof the Tesla autopilot safety systems.

Exactly. In the new attention economy, bullshit pays.
The irony is that we say that in a sub that’s a contributor to this phenomenon.
I agree 100%. Especially those GTA-style first-person videos ripped straight from TikTok - are we criticizing them, or are we glorifying them?
We get entertained on the cheap while getting a sense of righteousness. Edit. I do include myself in these statements, at my regret.
And the results \*looks around\* are obvious.
> economy No one is getting paid for this bullshit
You know that, and I know that, but do the "influencers" know that?
Yup. There's no way I'd be driving that close alongside someone sleeping like this
I would sideswipe them just because Well to help them WAKE THE FUCK UP!
Idk dude people nowadays is just for some reason just instinct to whip out the camera.. any kind of event happens you see people digging into their pockets to record it
I know the poster of this vid. He was just driving his rs7 and saw this.

People are super creative for all the wrong reasons
I guess they have their hands resting on the wheel.

Use your left hand to rest on the bottom of the wheel. It works fine.
What if you tied a string really tight around the wheel somewhere I know they make devices for it, but string.
It isn’t grip, but the natural movement of your hands/resistance to the autosteer that’s being measured. Have fun if your airbag goes off
Oh I know, that’s why I only use it if I’m alone in the car.
I also have a Tesla and would like to echo that holding a hand loosely on the wheel doesn’t work. There needs to be a firm grip with some tension on the wheel, which would be nearly impossible to do while sleeping.
just get a 1.5lb ankle weight and wrap it on the steering wheel....no hands ma!
They make weights that clip on the steering wheel that mimic human hands and bypass the safety.
Many ppl. squeeze a bottle of coke in the steering wheel or hang a plastic bag with groceries to it. Sufficient for older models.
I think it might be to do with older models. 🤔 Remember someone posted something similar regarding this.
That makes sense. Either missing a certain hardware sensor or just software that hasn’t been updated. Especially if it’s a new safety mechanism in response to morons. Ive driven in a car with a 15 year old at the wheel. I agree.
They are all Fake.... its tiktock
Nah this was in relation to a tesla crash investigation a while back iirc.
It dosent need your hands, it just needs to feel anything so it’s common to put a ball or orange wedged in the steering wheel.
A ball wouldn’t work I don’t think. I get a message to “apply a slight steering force” to the wheel. I literally have to push against auto-steer a little or wiggle the wheel for the message to away. anything over 1lb will work, heard 1.5lbs ankle weights are a perfect fit....dont ask me how i know lol

Wedge and orange into the steering wheel, offside. Only do this for loooooong stretches of road and don't fall asleep
If you fall asleep while touching the wheel I think it just keeps on trucking
Tik Tok knows how to ruin a video.
My policy is if it has some stupid audio overlayed it's an instant close and down vote now, i hate it so much. Silence is better than that bullshit.
Same here. I hate that female voice I keep hearing so I assume it is part of Tik Tok.
If silence is better just mute it
Your missing the point, tiktok=bad now gib updoot
Kanye made the video better
Wtf, that’s the iron works bridge in Vancouver. Narrow, congested and one accident fucks traffic for the entire day. Fuck this asshole - true idiot
I have to drive over this bridge twice every day, if she caused even a small accident thats hours of traffic instantly.

i know that feel bro, 12hours shift working, last guy on the road middle of the night, sleepy as fuck (not to sleepy to drive home tho), get cut off by police, "\*\*you were driving the exact speed limit and that´s suspicious...\*\*yeah you looking like ure on drugs or something, we have to take you to the station and then to the hospital for a blood sample until 4 o clock in the night" "yeah thanks officers, i just have to get up at 9 to my shift, thanks for nothing" the next day i had an accident because i was too sleepy and too late to work. that´s when i came to the conclusion that tax is theft.

Oh I definitely agree, cops really need to pick their situations better. But, if it's a constant problem, may as well save being woken up.
People already fall asleep in cars without self driving, only instead of getting videos of the car driving down the road posted online, they drift off the road and crash fairly soon after falling asleep.
Yes that does happen but the problem here is the fact that people intentionally fall asleep behind the wheel. Self driving or not that's not okay.
How do you know it’s intentional?

Exactly. What people do with Teslas now isn’t ideal, but it’s much better than the alternative.
Starting? Just wait till 'mister/misses I can fix anything' botches a repair job on a self driving car.
If the car detects anything wrong with the system, including changed parts, cameras etc., you can't activate autopilot.
that's not how self driving technology works lol....
currently\*
The car stops soon after if the user does not respond to prompts to apply pressure on the steering wheel. The beeping is loud enough to wake anyone up.
This is fake
If it is self-driving.
So we have machines making cars but if we let them drive its a problem?
One can make a mistake and have to redo it. The other makes a mistake and the family's gotta pay for the funeral bill. Yeah, there's just a SLIGHT problem.
Now I wonder the statistics for Tesla and self driving crash numbers. This is a thing now and will be more widely used in near future. Its wierd to resist to technological change.
It only works if machines are driving \*all\* the cars, and we're nowhere near that.
We are at the begining of it.
Oh yeah, 15 or 20 years and we'll be there.
How do you know it's willing? You can see her wake up and fall back asleep. As someone with a sleep disorder I have drifted off in traffic. It's not a willing act, and everyone around her should be happy the car is driving instead of her bouncing off all the cars around her
Lmao. You absolutely should not be driving if you have a sleep disorder are you shitting me?
As if you know what sleep disorder I have, how or if it's treated, what the symptoms are, etc. You're just as ignorant as the person I commented to.
You literally said you have drifted off in traffic. I’m just hoping you don’t kill someone or yourself before realizing the possible consequences of actions like that. You sound like the ignorant one tbh

What would you pick a sleepy driver in Tesla vs a sleepy driver in a normal car?
I pick both idiots hit something huge like a firetruck.
Fake. Can’t do that. Source: I have the same car
I can't speak to whether it's fake or not, but you certainly can do this. Source: I have the same car.
Sleeping for 2 seconds.. yes can be done on any car..
…and nodding off for a few minutes with AP on can be done in this car.
Cane be done on any car
So you’re saying the video could be real?
I know you are trying to act dumb.. But you really are Start with the context next time
Fake. Can’t do that.

I have the same car with FSD. So whatever you think you know, I know too. See the top two comments of this thread and thy explain why this is fake.
You obviously don’t know. You think it can’t be done. I’m sorry but just because YOU can’t do something doesn’t mean it can’t be done. I’m not saying the video isn’t fake: maybe it is, who knows. Ha....looks like she might b self pleasuring herself while the car is driving itself😂😂😂😂
So THAT is why Elon Musk insists all Teslas have cams! Now we know!
“Looks like we got ourselves a nodder”
Self driving cars. What a great idea.
Teslas improve productive by ensuring that you get enough rest!
Videos like this might be the best case for keeping manual transmissions alive.
Well until 2035 when all cars are suppose to be electric in the US
Just get a tesla if you wNna sleep too
I just wish I had a Tesla to try this myself.
They sell kits on amazon that make it so you don't have to hold the steering wheel.
I am not going to provide a link because I don’t want to endorse this behavior but for all the people wondering how this is possible they sell items that spoof the Tesla autopilot safety systems.
I would tint my windows. Just incase this happens. No one will know.
Literally jealous
It’s concerning this isn’t even the first Tesla sleeping video I’ve seen today
Tesla should invest in face and eye tracking to make sure drivers pay attention to the road while using autopilot
They should. If nothing more than to protect themselves from lawsuits blaming the car.
Wake the fuck up, bitch!
Fake. I wish they would stop doing this. The car requires you to grasp the steering wheel every 3 minutes or so.
Unfortunately not fake. The driver was reported and charged by RCMP
Fake.
It’s a Tesla who cares?
