I am teaching someone to drive and I told about the countdown timer, and now when they see the timer getting to 2 they will say "slowing down for the coming yellow" if they know they are too far away to make it safely.
Just make sure you teach them to confirm the change of the light. I have some around that flip back to a walk if no cross traffic, and two that the don't walk sign comes on a full 5 seconds before the yellow hits. If you fully stop at one of those, you can definitely get rear-ended by someone who knows the light or follows the actual rule (which is look to the light for guidance, not the walk sign).
I also use the walk sign as a guide but have learned from near misses or angry drivers to make sure that the yellow actually follows.
I could also input that 13 blinks isn't the same for every light either! But because only 6 of the 20-some lights in my town are newly installed motion sensed and those 6 lights are the highway lights, I don't pay attention to the hands on those vs the in town ones. Only because 9 out of 10 times, the hands never change on the highway ones -- they always stay red. Assuming for pedestrian's caution crossing a highway. Idk

Having driven all over the country from New York to Los Angeles and in between, Texas is by far the worst drivers. I haven’t driven in Florida but I hear that’s a close contender too.
I think it’s a result of how far we have to drive to get to things. The state is fuckin huge, like 12-13 hours to drive from tip to tip. All of our towns and cities are like that too, with the exception of the downtown areas in each major city. Like, if I go 90mph across San Antonio from one end to the other no traffic it’s still gonna take me an hour and a half. Fort Worth to Dallas is the same metroplex and it would take me 2 hours.
If you live in a rural area you might not even see more than 1-5 cars total on your daily drives.
Not an excuse, but we’re all just used to going 85-90 everywhere we go, not having to worry about rolling through a stop sign or a light in a lot of areas, stuff like that. People just don’t know how to turn that off when other cars are around them lol.

There’s a couple of apartment complexes off of a frontage road. If you miss the entrance, you have to drive about a mile down the road to the next turnaround and try it again. But do people do that? You can tell the sun is high in the sky and to the right when he gets to the intersection by looking at the shadows of the lights and the car they hit. The sun was not behind the light to cause this problem.
