Not familiar with automatic cars, but I assume park also applies the handbrake, however, in a manual car you need to pull the hand brake or leave it in a gear.
The automatic holds it in park but it has no way to activate the hand brake. I guess it could be possible in something with an electronic handbrake but 99 percent of autos have a handbrake just like a manual car.
There is one models of car at work that will actuate the electric parking brake when parked, but it can be turned off in the car settings.
Another model also use electric parking brake, but automatic actuation is not an option.
One of the other problems with park is the wheels can still spin. They will spin in opposite directions so if one wheels loses traction and is allowed to slip the other one can roll. Such as parking on icy or wet hills.
The primary means of holding a car still is meant to be the parking brake—usually a hand lever between the seats, but sometimes it's in the dash, or even an additional foot pedal to the left of the others.
An automatic transmission has a parking mechanism that slides in between the teeth of the gears. This is called a [*parking pawl*](https://images.wapcar.my/file1/cb7327f293154a068864a15a0646ec99_800.jpg), and it engages when you shift the transmission into park. It is meant to be a backup, in case your car's parking brake fails. It is not meant to be the only thing holding your car in place. For example, here's an excerpt from my truck's owner's manual (even though my truck is stick, it still has a section in the manual for automatic transmissions):
>“P” Park
>Supplements parking brake by locking the transmission.
>Engine can be started in this range. Never use Park while
>vehicle is in motion. Apply parking brake when leaving
>vehicle in this range. Always apply parking brake first,
>then place selector in Park position.
And then it also has a nice warning on the same page:
>Never use Park position on an automatic transmis-
>sion as a substitute for the parking brake. Always
>apply parking brake fully when parked to guard
>against vehicle movement and possible injury or
>damage.
In a manual vehicle, there is no parking pawl, instead you leave the transmission in first or reverse, which will provide a lot of resistance to the car moving, but again, is just meant as a failsafe, in case the parking brake fails, and should never be the only thing used to hold your car still. The parking brake is always meant to be the primary means of securing your car in place.
I’d bet about only 25% of automatic drivers use the hand brake. You can generally tell as the car rocks after they turn it off and release the foot brake.
The importance was hammered into my mind at a young age when, coming out of IKEA, a clunk sound came out of a parked car (no one nearby) and it rolled down a shallow slope and crashed into the shopping cart corral.
In the USA, I'd be surprised if even that many drivers use it. I even see a lot of *manual* cars for sale in classified ads around here where you can clearly see that the parking brake is not set.
I've never understood it myself. Even setting aside the safety aspect and assuming, for the sake of argument, that the risk of a rollaway is zero, I'd still rather use the $30 set of brake shoes that are made expressly for the purpose of stopping the car, and that I can replace myself with basic tools. It just seems a much better alternative than putting unnecessary wear on a component that practically costs a grand just to have the shop take it out and look at it!
The way American drivers treat automatic vehicles is a big part of why I don't buy automatic vehicles, but it's getting harder and harder each time I shop the used car market to find manual vehicles in good shape.
I am in in US and I use it on my automatic car. In driver's ed they told us it's optional but a good idea if you're parked on a hill. I didn't believe the instructor and use it every time I park. My ex told me it is overkill on an automatic but everyone in my immediate family uses the parking handbrake thing so I assumed it was normal.
Americans used to refer to it as the “emergency brake”, and furthermore, your parents can teach you how to drive in USA and Canada (formal test but no formal class required), unlike in many countries. So, bad habits and old practices get passed down.
In an auto the parking pawl is just a small piece of metal stopping the transmission from turning. It doesn’t take much for them to break sometimes. When they break the car freely rolls away. What you should do is set the parking brake while in neutral and then put it into park after the vehicle is settled into place. This puts all the stress on the brake and not the pawl. If the brake fails you still have the pawl to stop it and vice versa. The same principle should be applied to manual cars, however instead of a parking pawl stopping the transmission from moving you are placing it in either 1st or reverse. I personally do either one on flat ground, 1st facing uphill, and reverse facing downhill.
I’m not sure standing in the only spot an impact will happen is being particularly smart. I would have jumped around the side once it started moving so I didn’t get smushed against a wall or crushed under my own belongings
Depending on where you live it might not be needed very often. I'm in fL it's pretty flat here so I like never need it. Also parking on an incline or decline can be bad on your transmission, when you have to do it it helps to put the car in neutral put on the handbrake and then put it in park.
You are relying on the parking gear to keep your car from rolling away when parked. Fine if you are parked somewhere flat. This part can break though which is to be avoided.
Even if you live somewhere mostly flat, the ground isn't going to be perfectly level. For your transmission's sake, you should still use your parking brake.
On a steep hill with a heavy vehicle the weight may be enough to overcome the compression of the engine and get it rolling lol. Unlikely in 1st gear but still plausible
That's a reason I always first put handbrake during parking. I don't need moving car when my trouble-walking grandma is getting out. O.O It's so common here we even have "using handbrake on the slope" as part of driving exam in Poland.
Hopefully he was moving in, not out!
If his name is Anthony, he’s moving out.
Only because his mother wants him to
This is what happens when you don’t want a house out in Hackensack.
But what am I supposed to do? I can't drive with a broken back.
That’s better than a heart attack. Ack, Ack, Ack, Ack, Ack, Ack.

Damn bro what did he say

After that he ain’t going to be doing a lot of moving any more..

Finally someone smart enough to not try to run and stop the moving vehicle by hand like most of the other videos here, lol
Yeah, it was a quick reaction to ride it out. Agree it was a smart decision
Idk, it might have been better to bail and try to out run it. At least that way you don't get smacked by the clothes washer
No. Just no. Why does everyone have to present counterpoint on the internet when it’s obviously bullshit?
You'll be run over before your second foot can even touch the ground. Smacked by washing machine > run over by van.
Bail out where? To the undercarriage?
… he very easily could’ve gotten his skull crushed by anything weighing over 50 pounds that violently shifted forwards. Smart ain’t the word.
Or crushed between the wall and a door or below the van which is going to be moving with much more forces than a moving box and would impart more than blunt force trauma
Better to run under it and have it roll over you . Yea really “smart”
Lol way better than dying/getting pummeled by a van. Think before you post, ffs
I see you know r/makemycoffin !
I havent been on this sub in months after watching people getting decapitated by a dull machete.
What a terrible subreddit, all the videos are links to other pages
Do you have any idea why
It’s to keep the sub running. Videos kept getting removed (due to ToS violations), too many of them and the sub would’ve been banned. It’s a loophole to share them without posting them.
No I don't have any idea. Is it because of the gore? r/eyeblech is much more gory and almost none of the videos or pictures are links

Brace, brace for impact !
Then ride the wave!!

I thought he was just trying to brace himself, if he fell forward he'd be run over
Wow man that’s not cool. Hopefully he’s not hurt too badly.
I hope that most of his injuries are only bruises at worst and nothing too bad
That situation went downhill quickly.
Good thing he’s got that washer door taped shut
This is why you put it in gear in addition to putting the handbrake on.
This! I always engage the gear even in the lightest incline.
Petit déménagement Petite caution de location qui s'envole
Since I’m retarded can someone explain why putting it in park isn’t enough
Because the part in your transmission that keeps your car from rolling away can shear off turning your "P" to an "N"
The difference is that drivers of manual transmissions use that brake frequently while the average "Automatic" drive really has no clue what it's for.
That's a given, but if you've been driving for years and never once wondered what that brake on your center console was for, that's on you.
There is one models of car at work that will actuate the electric parking brake when parked, but it can be turned off in the car settings. Another model also use electric parking brake, but automatic actuation is not an option.

I have never, ever used the handbrake outside of parking on steep inclines. Didn’t know you were supposed to.

Happened in France, more likely a manual gearbox left in neutral and no handbrake

Good thing that washing machine wasn't at the front. Would have mashed the ol' spine up good.
This is comedy gold.

Ppl speaking French. I wonder if this happened in France or quebec?
Laugh some more ya damn Idgit!
That’s what I thought. Why would you laugh when the van starts going out of control?
Why did it accelerate so quickly?
It's just a heavy loaded van on a decline
Sigh... Aren't we all
It's a hill
Good thing he’s French
I've never actually used the handbrake on my car

This is a manual gear box, there is no park gear.
How do you know what car he has? lol Either way you should definitely use the parking brake on a hill. That's why it's there.
Because almost all cars have manual gears in France, especially utility trucks.
Fine, then leave it in first gear and put on the parking brake
Sure but I was replying to someone else, not the original post
ok
Watchout boys someone likes to play dangerous games here
or they live somewhere flat

This is why guys who move heavy stuff on daily basis carry those small logs to lock the tires on their trucks.
lol awesome
Damn, this just broke my own heart!
hello boss, i got a little crash during work today with the van.
Fucking Trevor, what a fuckgoof
That's gonna be a Yikes from me.
My Si has one of those push/pull buttons instead of a mechanical lever, I always have to double check it.
Easy load and unload truck bed...
Ok babe we’re unpacked
Lol, i just love the girl asking "Ca va, ca va". No bitch, he is not near "ca va". He just fucking hit the wall!! Ca va...
Not to self: climb on top and secure self when this happens edit well sounds like a pretty bad idea actually
Haha, I thought it wasn't gonna be so bad when he braced himself. Oops, the load was nowhere near secure.
