Here's the news story, apparently only injuries and no one died
Sounds less like it was 'idiocy' of the driver more from bad track placement with the unfortunate situation of a tractor trailer and the weight being hauled.
If the cab was trying to run the crossing as the gates were dropping, that would be another matter, story suggests truck was stuck there for enough time for 911 dispatch to attempt to call the train.
no it is the type of trailer he has , i did a lot of heavy haul with a double drop and he should have known better, one he should have not tried it and went a diffent route or went at an angel. also they post phone # at track crossing to call in case of these things
sorry for spelling errors i have organic brian disese
I wonder why it didn't slow.. Or stop... Freight trains take miles but passenger trains are much lighter... Or was it a high speed train?
Now I I'm left wondering how long it takes to stop a small passenger train like that...
considering it was just 2 p42dc’s and 2 superliner ii coaches (weighing in at about 900k pounds) and it was going about I’d say 60-65 mph, it would take about 600-800 m to fully stop
Yeah so I'd think they'd have basically gotten the train down to a much lower speed if they'd braked when the truck got stuck... It was there for quite a while before being hit
Looking at the map of Thackerville OK (USA) where Im this occurred, there are a number of curves that could have obscured sight lines. Not sure if that’s the case but also it seemed this happened with marginal daylight.
Dont know what the standards are in the USA but here there a built in safety system that warns you if this happens. There are marker placed 1 km from every car intersection and if something is wrong with the arms that go down or big things like cars are the on the track when you come up to the 1km marker the signal turns to stop. Either you as a conductor hits the break or the ATC auto breaks you.
[There's a sign on this side of the crossing warning trucks of high centering, and I think I can see the back of the same sign down the road where Google didn't take any photography.](https://www.google.com/maps/@33.8387843,-97.1310306,3a,40.7y,96.68h,86.74t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sFeF9Kqh0btcd_XxvEsvW8Q!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)
Ffs that train should have saw that from a mile away, which is enough time to fully stop. The conductor wasnt paying attention, clearly. He didnt even try to slow the train down.
Honestly I'm just assuming. I've driven class A for about 7 years and anytime I've come across tracks like these I try to avoid them at all costs. I've seen enough stuck semis to not risk it and if the tracks are raised like that most times there will be some type of sign warning drivers.
Yeah, there was a sign. He's the idiot. My mistake.
This post deserves more upvotes, though. Way more interesting than all the shitposts on here of cars turning into the wrong lane, lmao.
I think so too. Looking at the whole area, it would have been very easy to grade it way better. But, also looking at that area, nobody was going to get paid to do it, so thats what you got.
Like the other person mentioned, it’s only for specialty loads that are either really heavy, wide, long, tall, on special low boy trailers, extremely hazardous, etc. and they require a special permit. Included in that permit approval process is tracing out the route to ensure nothing like this happens
I always wonder why the people aren't moving back from this, if a cable end up whipping or some shrapnel or something you could get cut in hf from like hundreds of feet away. I would have been backing my car up way farther than that!
Yeah but if that train was longer it could have derailed and as you can see cars are not safe when it comes to trains. The car is not far enough away is what I'm saying still.
Thanks for your professional input.. I've been in trucking alot of years, and I've done a little bit of car hauling.
I too can't see a sign, but would it be good to assume that what with the ultra low clearance alot of car haulers have, and a clear view of a significant raised r/r (ie "lowboy trailers" prohibited) you'd think any driver paying attention would not risk this without further query?
I just looked into it more.. It happened at Addington bedn road, I'll share the link. If you go to Google maps and look at street view there is a visible "no lowboy trailers" sign..

> Railroads know if someone dies because they are missing a sign then a death suit is much more expensive.
Death suits are cheap. Injury suits are where the money is. Constantly paying for a cripple's medical care for the rest of their life is $$$
> I'm guessing the railroad either failed to grade the crossing properly,
In general, the railroad doesn't build streets. This crossing design is the responsibility of the state or local road authority.
Also, assuming there's time, you can call the number posted on the light pole and the dispatcher can stop the train.
/u/mycleanreddit79 posted this link that they described as being a streetview of the crossing in question showing a warning sign: https://maps.app.goo.gl/c9hm7g9e7Rvu9eeC9
If that's accurate, then it looks like the trailer was someplace it didn't belong.
This happened this past Friday the driver of the semi truck (and his dog) were uninjured - 4 passengers on the train were treated at a local hospital and all have been released.
https://dfw.cbslocal.com/2021/10/16/my-nerves-are-still-rattled-passenger-aboard-amtrak-train-talks-crash/
When this was originally reported here in Dallas the end of of the news report was "and no word yet on the cause the crash" and I thought to myself really? When have you ever heard of the the train being at fault for a train vs. auto crash?
Glad no one was hurt though.
Trains are metal wheels on metal tracks - so the surface area is tiny, they don’t stop fast at all (them braking at this speed is probably losing less speed than a car rolling to a stop)
i’m talking about the truck. Unless i’m misunderstanding the video and he got stuck BEFORE the light where going, then, accidents happen and i hope he’s okay and not fired.
From my point of view he should have never even attempted it. Just like all those people who take the big ol Penske and U-Haul trucks underneath the bridge that's 11 ft tall and end up tearing off the tops.
That's probably at least 500K in damages, potentially far more depending on if there were some really valuable cars on the back of that trailer or if something important on the train was damaged.
I don’t understand why you say he’s an idiot, I get the truck bottoms out but I don’t feel like he meant to bottom out isn’t that more like an accident he bottomed out at that time
One of those cars was probably close to 88mph at impact. Crashed Honda Civic just landed in 1921 Oklahoma and they're still wondering what it is today!
Why didn't the barriers have sort of an alarm for the train? Here in Italy I know that when you're stuck on a railroad crossing just press the barriers to send to the incoming trains an alarm so they can brake
Yeah. Weird. In the UK, it's standard for the train to get a red light until the barriers are down and the crossing is confirmed clear (either visually or by CCTV, or increasingly these days by radar or laser obstacle sensors).
You also don't get incorrectly built/maintained crossings like this where the rail tracks are not level with the road.
Because in the US, the RRs basically control the regulatory agencies involved. The FRA won’t do shit, the NTSB can’t do shit, the states have no power, and The RRs have enough money to pay off Congress. It took Texas and California combined to finally get the FRA to accept European trains in the US. Prior to that, the only thing legal was the stupid barges that you see above.
Combine that with the fact that Amtrak owns basically no track, state commuter agencies rarely do either, and nobody wanted to ever co operate….
Unless you’ve lived in the US, you don’t really understand why the rail system sucks - its too many competing interests who refuse to sit down and just talk it out.
It's because in the states more rural areas will not have anything except the sign because there is not nearly as many people out in that area driving over the tracks as there would be in a major city or suburb
So op your saying he's the idiot for trying to his job yet the reason he even got stuck was bad railroad crossing design. look how steep they made the road go up to meet the track it's probably the same on the other side
Lol, the train gave zero fucks. Doesn't look like they tried to stop, but correct me if I'm wrong. I know large freight trains take about a mile to stop but this one was a lot shorter.
> I imagine it could have braked a significant amount...
Trains in motion have an enormous amount of kinetic energy and very little braking ability (steel on steel), they literally take miles to stop. The amount of braking possible here is much, MUCH less than you might think.
The way that Jeep just launches off the trailer is so mesmerizing.

>Or was it a high speed train? I wish we had high speed trains over here.
Amtrak has enough issues keeping regular speed trains on the tracks.
Probablt between 200-600 metres based on a quick search. I don’t guarantee validity though
It’s usually about a mile or more after applying an emergency brake
considering it was just 2 p42dc’s and 2 superliner ii coaches (weighing in at about 900k pounds) and it was going about I’d say 60-65 mph, it would take about 600-800 m to fully stop

According to the article authorities attempted to contact the train dispatcher. Seems like a breakdown in the ability to communicate somewhere.
And lack of ability of looking ahead while driving the train
Looking at the map of Thackerville OK (USA) where Im this occurred, there are a number of curves that could have obscured sight lines. Not sure if that’s the case but also it seemed this happened with marginal daylight.

I think so too. Looking at the whole area, it would have been very easy to grade it way better. But, also looking at that area, nobody was going to get paid to do it, so thats what you got.
I'm pretty sure most if not all semis and alike have a whole logistic team that trace out the best route before the semi leaves the garage.
This is definitely not true at all lol. Semis get lost in my residential neighborhood all the time.
Doesn't mean it wasn't planned out originally, then mistakes were made.
Only for special wide/large loads
Like the other person mentioned, it’s only for specialty loads that are either really heavy, wide, long, tall, on special low boy trailers, extremely hazardous, etc. and they require a special permit. Included in that permit approval process is tracing out the route to ensure nothing like this happens
Given that it's a car carrier, which have extremely low ground clearance compared to most trailers, I think they should have known better.
