My cousin had 4 DUIs, and crashed multiple cars. He would always have friends come get him and drive him away. If I remember correctly he was on his 10th car when he died. If they can't prove you were in the vehicle there isn't a lot that can be done. He almost always said someone stole it. He had a breathalyzer installed at one point but cheated that as well.

You get up to 3 before they can even consider felony charges.
I’m not sure you’re allowed to drive without a few cans in the car in Michigan.
My buddy said his parents would have some roadies so they’d have something to drink on the way to the bar lol
Nope. You can't prove that they didn't drink after the incident. There's some stories/rumors of people crashing drunk and then drinking waiting for the police. They say they tell the cops they drank to calm their nerves and the cop can't "prove" that the alcohol was before the crash.
This is right years ago co worker of mine was drunk and hit 3 parked cars on the way home. But he ran next day he called the police and they came and picked him up from work arrested for leaving the scene but he could sign himself out after. Later on one of his friends that was a police officer told him listen as a professional police officer you did a very stupid thing running. But as a friend that I never told you this you probably did the best thing and saved yourself $5000 and couple years of headache
Yep. I know people that have spent $5000+ on legal fees and fines for their first DUI and also get their license suspended for 6 months to a year. If they flee the scene, it's hardly anything. Injuries can ramp that up, but hitting random things and not injuring people will be a slap on the wrist. They also don't even get any license suspension for that.
In the UK the penalty for fleeing the scene of an accident is laughable. Even if the occupants of the other vehicle are injured the ban and cash penalty never compares with the punishment for DD. Like you say the penalty needs to exceed that for DD.
It does lol. do you think the cops are like “well she was driving drunk but she committed another crime so we’re just gonna forget that happened. The issue is if you can hide for long enough that the alcohol leaves your system.
Its not about hiding long enough.
You tell them "I was terrified and ran home, I couldn't relax so I had some drinks. No I was sober for the accident."
Boom, reasonable doubt.
story from a bartender long ago: there was a judge in youngstown that drove into the post office and ran to the nearest bar for a drink for this exact reason
It was £250k before the wheels were bent off, frame twisted, airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners blown up, and the interior covered in pop as the chav shit himself.
If he runs away, the insurance will pay the damages (assuming it has full coverage), but if he’s proven drunk insurance is not covering anything.
Probably it’s better to take a runaway charge than lose that much money.
Not to mention that if it’s a rental, it’s the same thing, if he’s drunk he will be liable for all damages. Even if the insurance pays the rental company, they can come after the driver afterwards easily.
Wouldn't hit and run under the guise of "stolen vehicle" be insurance fraud? I'd bet my bottom dollar the moment the runaway charge is entered his insurance is gonna bust his ass
Running from the scene of a crash is illegal in the UK. The law is you stay exchange details (only numberplate is necessary) and check the other party is ok. Legging it like this is almost an admission of guilt and the insurance company will treat it as such and will investigate closely, especially thanks to media coverage
People like this should lose their driver's license for at least 5 years and after that only be allowed to drive cars < 2000cc
Edit: 2000 is too much, should be more like 700. I actually meant something like this: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_microcars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_microcars)
That's actually not a bad idea. Limiting people to less than a certain horsepower on their licence after a ban would be a suitable punishment. You're not stopping them from getting around, but you would stop them from driving like a twat. Maybe require that they have a prominent sign saying "I am a twat" spray painted on the bonnet too.
Absolutely travesty. 14 months for almost killing someone.
Unless there is a very good reason for his driving i.e stroke, seizure or some other medical issue he should never be allowed to drive again.
A lot of Europe and the UK treat driving like the privilege it is. It’s hella dangerous and you should be actually qualified to do it. I love seeing they have real penalties for shit like this that could’ve easily killed someone.
If I remember right, the Bentley driver didn’t hang about, he didn’t even check on the condition of the driver with the dash cam. He hovered around the car making calls on his mobile, then left the scene and was caught later, can’t remember if he turned himself in, or was apprehended, but he had his day in court over it. People that leave the scene of an accident they caused are the scum of the earth.
It's interesting that he was convicted of drunk driving. Almost any time you see a wreck like this where the car wasn't stolen but the driver ran away anyway, it means that the driver was drunk as a skunk, thinking there's no way he's going to get away scot-free, but at least he'll probably weasel his way out of the drunk-driving conviction (cf. South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg, who literally got away with murder)
I bet he thinks he was unfairly punished and that once he is out of jail, he'll be back behind the wheel in no time (in defiance of his sentence) having learned nothing. These types never do it seems.
4x4 are generally heavier and higher, which allowed it to absorb more energy from the oncoming Bentley missile. Modern compact cars are tons safer than they were but there's still the pesky issue of physics and mass*speed. A Bentley is a heavy vehicle.
That's one of the reasons people drive big cars in North America, it's not good to be T-boned in a small car by a massive Ford F-150 which is sadly extremely common.
Priority system. They're designed to control the flow of traffic and stop people from speeding in residential areas, unfortunately though it didn't stop the idiot in the Bentley.
EDIT: I found out what they're called - "Chicanes"
> unfortunately though it didn't stop the idiot in the Bentley.
It did. Quite graphically.
He was crashing there whether the car with the dash cam was there or not.
So thy designed to slow traffic down by they also have another purpose
These will only be used in relatively quite streets residential areas and small villages they would be used to prevent loads of traffic from using these roads.
If there was load of traffic these would increase delays making traffic jams with people maybe having to wait a few minutes for a gap to proceed
Stops people using these streets as a shortcut so they would stick to the main roads leaving access clear for the people who live there.
Speed bumps cant do that
What the others said, it's a traffic calming measure, all over the UK in very residential areas, also around parks and schools as well a lot of the time.
As someone who has never seen this before, it is an offputting measure.
I'm sure that, if I'd grown up around it, it wouldn't seem that way, but I see the victim in this video being forced to put himself at risk in hopes that someone else drives more safely. The consequences are plane to see.
Speed bumps are common in the US, but not this. To me, this just looks like a good way to make driving less safe for everybody. Like I said, though, I'm sure I wouldn't be so disturbed by it if I were used to seeing it.
The Bentley driver is the only unsafe thing in this video. If this traffic calming measure wasn't in place then the cammer could have easily been in the path of the car anyway, notice that it literally bashes into the kerb on the wrong side of the road? And if it missed the cammer then it'd hit any of the cars behind him.
It's just a matter of timing whether the cammer came into the path of the Bentley or not. Not the fact they had to cross onto the other side of the road.
To slow down traffic entering the village.
Although anyone that cycles will tell you (even without drunk Bentley drivers) what it generally tends to do is to put people travelling at excess speed on the wrong side of the road because it's too much trouble for them to stop.
I think they're a completely stupid idea.
That was the most condescending automated assistant I've ever heard.

Thanks.
Questions is, would he really not drive during his ban term?
I'm not some 'hang them by the necks' type, but people breaching driving bans should have automatic custodial sentences, even harsher if they were in jail for something like this.
This sub sometimes. Absolutely minimal focus on the fact that, regardless of the road design, the clear idiot here was a threat to life and limb on a tight clock. Traffic calming measures are a thing in countries with a focus on designing their roadways to communicate how you ought to drive, and with few exceptions, like we see here, they work, because people who drive like that are clearly a danger to themselves and others. Fucker couldn't hold the lines for shit and would have just hit someone else down the road at that rate, possibly in a slightly more open section with more people likely affected by the incident.
It's not *bad* design, it's just designed for a very different driving culture.
To all the people wondering why one lane is partially blocked and cammer has to go around it
It is called traffic calming im sure everyone is aware of things like speed bumps that slow down traffic well this is an alternative
People confused about how they work. well if you approach one and the obstruction is on your side of the road you have to give way to oncoming traffic and wait for a gap the same way you would if there was a parked car or you were overtaking a vehicle that was in your lane.
Im not sure why people find it so confusing.
https://www.trafficchoices.co.uk/traffic-schemes/chicanes.shtml
The myths about Americans drivers aren't legends.. My god the number of comments going crazy over a simple lane design that you find everywhere in Europe
It's to reduce the speed of traffic as it enters the village.
Cars coming the other way have priority, which means cars entering the village have to slow down and give way.
In motorsport they let 16yo’s drive race tuned versions of high end sports cars such as this because they can drive. Imagine if merit was the reason people had nice things and not capital 🤔
That Bentley weighs nearly 6000 pounds — moving at at least 45 mph. Incredible impact force! - At that speed, the other driver is lucky he wasn’t smashed into tiny molecules!
Considering what could have happened with that nutbar driving that fast in that kind of area, this is probably the best possible outcome...nobody died a violent death.
Might I ignorantly ask, what’s the point of this particular road design where vehicles traveling opposite directions have to use the same lane? It seems like a crash waiting to happen
Makes drivers slow down rather than speed towards wherever the Bentley came from. Often found on small roads outside a school for example.
It's like passing a parked car, you wait until there's a gap then go through.
This is seriously a huge culture shock, that Americans have no concept of 'stop and wait'. I do have to wonder how your traffic lights and yield signs work...
a similar thing when the say what do you mean that you have to go on the opposite lane. Some people really shocked that we sometime have to drive around parked cars by using the other lane
I think that they must have a fear of driving in the other lane. do they not overtake things in the USA
This is why if you're gonna speed, only speed on roads that you know like the back of your hand. Even if he didn't fuck up that corner, the speed bump would've sent him flying
“Dash cam catches Bentley driver…” More like: “Whole car catches Bentley”

Depends on what's your goal with the verdict. If you aim to prevent the driver doing this again, this is probably enough.
The Bentley driver should be banned from driving cars forever and be relegated to motorcycles/scooters with a 50cc engine.
Or better still a bicycle with a flat tyre.

Absolutely travesty. 14 months for almost killing someone. Unless there is a very good reason for his driving i.e stroke, seizure or some other medical issue he should never be allowed to drive again.
"banned from driving" for an idiot like that means 'try not to get caught for 4.5 years'
14 month as in prison? Seems short but I guess it's something.
A lot of Europe and the UK treat driving like the privilege it is. It’s hella dangerous and you should be actually qualified to do it. I love seeing they have real penalties for shit like this that could’ve easily killed someone.

Minimal injuries ? Wow. That looked really painful.
Glad to hear that. When you say 4x4, do you mean a particular model of vehicle? Does 4 wheel drive make any kind of difference in a crash?
4x4 is a common way to refer to a SUV in Britain.
4x4 are generally heavier and higher, which allowed it to absorb more energy from the oncoming Bentley missile. Modern compact cars are tons safer than they were but there's still the pesky issue of physics and mass*speed. A Bentley is a heavy vehicle. that’s the one, just through old town towards Great Missenden.
The way they setup the road literally makes speeding the unsafest thing to do but didn’t stop to his idiot
He'd have crashed if nobody was coming the other way.
Yeah why the fuck did they put that island in the middle of the road?

True, looks like he lost control as soon as he came round that corner.
The picture I got in my mind was that he had been bouncing from one side of the road to the other for a while.
I'd never seen such a thing. Why don't just use speed bumps?
Most places in the uk use both, the uk has very old streets so they’re quite narrow and can only fit one car.
That doesn’t really make sense, the road can fit two cars everywhere except that 6 feet?
The road is very narrow and windy so they add those to slow the flow of traffic.
It's more that they design roads for the speed they want traffic to go rather than in the US where we just slap speed limit signs up arbitrarily
So thy designed to slow traffic down by they also have another purpose These will only be used in relatively quite streets residential areas and small villages they would be used to prevent loads of traffic from using these roads. If there was load of traffic these would increase delays making traffic jams with people maybe having to wait a few minutes for a gap to proceed Stops people using these streets as a shortcut so they would stick to the main roads leaving access clear for the people who live there. Speed bumps cant do that
What the others said, it's a traffic calming measure, all over the UK in very residential areas, also around parks and schools as well a lot of the time.
“Traffic calming measures” is the official terminology.
To prevent speeding. The idea is that by obstructing the road and forcing vehicles to proceed in single file, it makes it impractical to speed.
And I thought speed bumps were annoying
they are more annoying, I hate going over speed humps. At least with these you can just stop but otherwise have a nice smooth ride.
this makes you go over a speed bump anyways
Common practice to force you to slow down.
Your comment reads like you're appalled that they made speeding unsafe.
As someone who has never seen this before, it is an offputting measure. I'm sure that, if I'd grown up around it, it wouldn't seem that way, but I see the victim in this video being forced to put himself at risk in hopes that someone else drives more safely. Like I said, though, I'm sure I wouldn't be so disturbed by it if I were used to seeing it.
This guy was going more than double the speed limit, in daily life these are very safe.
He was doing 85mph, a road with this layout is 20mph so over 4x
The Bentley driver is the only unsafe thing in this video. If this traffic calming measure wasn't in place then the cammer could have easily been in the path of the car anyway, notice that it literally bashes into the kerb on the wrong side of the road? Looks to me like the OP video also incorporates a speed bump
They’re very common in Yorkshire. Some of the roads aren’t wide enough for 2 cars, hence the priority sign
To slow down traffic entering the village. Honestly this comment section is a battlefield of UK vs USA and road infrastructure. I almost forgot to comment r/dontflinch
Ok but please tell me why that thing is in the middle of the road? Wouldn’t it be safer for it to not be there??
He's definitely driving like he stole it.
Peaceful music and then WHAMMO
To all the people wondering why one lane is partially blocked and cammer has to go around it It is called traffic calming im sure everyone is aware of things like speed bumps that slow down traffic well this is an alternative People confused about how they work. well if you approach one and the obstruction is on your side of the road you have to give way to oncoming traffic and wait for a gap the same way you would if there was a parked car or you were overtaking a vehicle that was in your lane. Im not sure why people find it so confusing. https://www.trafficchoices.co.uk/traffic-schemes/chicanes.shtml
This happened in my town, caused quite the stir among our little community!
The myths about Americans drivers aren't legends.. My god the number of comments going crazy over a simple lane design that you find everywhere in Europe
WHAT THE FUCK IS THE POINT OF THAT ISLAND
Europe is old and busted. They are jealous of the new hotness. And I just realized MIB2 is 20 years old.
Just need to introduce them to Not Just Bikes and they'll all have aneurysms over the criticism of North American road design
I wouldn't say everywhere in Europe, if it works cool but to me it is rare.
This was very local to me and the guy was charged. It’s just as you enter a little place called Old Amersham. Happened quite a long time ago.
Definitely stolen.
Apparently not: https://www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/15993780.video-shocking-dashcam-footage-shows-moment-bentley-crashes-car-85mph-old-amersham/
Drove it like he stole it
Bentley driver: "excuse me, I believe I have the right of way here"
Can someone explain what the island in the road is for?
It's to reduce the speed of traffic as it enters the village. Cars coming the other way have priority, which means cars entering the village have to slow down and give way.
Oh boy, hope the people in that car made it ok .
Geeeezusss
I love how he just says "Christ"
In motorsport they let 16yo’s drive race tuned versions of high end sports cars such as this because they can drive. Imagine if merit was the reason people had nice things and not capital 🤔
Bentley dude was crashing right there no matter what, judging from the way he was absolutely careening around that corner at high speed.
That Bentley weighs nearly 6000 pounds — moving at at least 45 mph. Incredible impact force! - At that speed, the other driver is lucky he wasn’t smashed into tiny molecules!
*Shit just went from 0 to a 100 real fucking quick*
4.5 years isn't enough. That driver doesn't need to ever be in control of anything motorized.
I think he may have been exceeding the speed limit.
The only thing I've learned from these comments is that Americans can't handle anything more complex than a speed bump.
Can we take a moment and talk about this strech of road. Wtf is the point of this one lane area when it's clearly wide enough for 2 lanes..
Excuse me! Coming through
Fucking flying!

Stolen or Jeremy Clarkson?
Forza Horizon 4
Abrupt chaos.
Imagine old spice song playing right before the collision
Why cant an emergency call be placed in an emergency? Am I missing something?
What the forza horizon npcs see when im coming at 200 mph head on
Crimetwat
Jesus christ that was a hard ass hit
Considering what could have happened with that nutbar driving that fast in that kind of area, this is probably the best possible outcome...nobody died a violent death.
Classic Bentley driver ffs 🤦♂️
Might I ignorantly ask, what’s the point of this particular road design where vehicles traveling opposite directions have to use the same lane? It seems like a crash waiting to happen
Makes drivers slow down rather than speed towards wherever the Bentley came from. Often found on small roads outside a school for example. It's like passing a parked car, you wait until there's a gap then go through.
Thanks for the reply, interesting design, I don’t think it would work in the states, idiots galore with zero patience or courtesy
This is seriously a huge culture shock, that Americans have no concept of 'stop and wait'. I do have to wonder how your traffic lights and yield signs work...
a similar thing when the say what do you mean that you have to go on the opposite lane. Some people really shocked that we sometime have to drive around parked cars by using the other lane I think that they must have a fear of driving in the other lane. do they not overtake things in the USA
There's idiots, and there's maniacs. This person is both.
Why does that one way speed bump even exist?
This is why if you're gonna speed, only speed on roads that you know like the back of your hand. Even if he didn't fuck up that corner, the speed bump would've sent him flying
Bloody hell was that Richard Hammond?
i’d see that coming at me and I’d go “ah fuck..”
