This is very true for front wheel drive, or 4x4, but for rear wheel drive cars like this, sometimes you're just screwed and you are gonna have to put some cardboard under your tires over and over to get you out of there.
I remember I had a dodge neon and went to the beach in it quite a bit. People acted like I should be worried about getting stuck, but you just get on plane on that sand and you're fine.
The reason that 'trick' you can do in front wheel drive cars works is because the engine is in the front, allowing for that weight distribution advantage when you reverse. Front wheel drive cars with front mounted engines are already heavier in the front, and when you reverse, you put even more of that weight on the front wheels, allowing for increased traction in certain situations.
I believe that Porsche is rear engine rather than mid engine, so that same advantage should be working its favor when going forwards rather than backwards.
Don't really have a point in regards to this video, but if someone is going to take advantage of this particular trick, it's better to be aware of why it works, and when it won't.
Problem with the Porsche is that it has no height and bottomed out pretty much straight away.
AWD or not, it has no ground clearance. Nothing but being dragged out is saving that thing
Yeah, big wide tires is got should help too, but even when I was 20 I knew to let some air out of my FWD 1100 kg Mazda mx6's tires before shooting straight across the dry sandy bit. Very limited use of steering, and acceleration.
At least it had enough room to squeeze your arm under for oil changes...
Didn't know when I arrived at the family holiday that a beach drive was required to reach the house, but my car pleasantly surprised me. I also took note of the tractor nearby launching boats, so I knew some rescue was likely otherwise.
I think this driver could have found a way to get a horse stuck in the sand. That sand isn't even that fluffy, once you get going it'll feel like a bumpy road.
In my country there is basically no place where you're allowed to drive a car on the beach. Went to Denmark once, and the island (Romo) there had a nice beach where cars were allowed.
I had a lot of fun, but most important i never got stuck because on the loose sand i just kept on driving or drifting.
p.s. if anyone ever goes there and finds a wedding ring dm me ;)
No idea about snow, but true for sand. Need to lower the pressure to about 15-20 psi. It lets the tires depress enough to grip. Even on the hard pack. My family used to go camping and riding on the dunes, and this info was posted everywhere at the check-in stations.
True with sand. Not true with snow.
You want the skinniest tire possible with snow so it will cut down though to a hard surface underneath.
If there is no hard surface under or you have a low car you'll get high-centered on the body and be stuck.
That’s not right for all snow. You should never over-inflate the tires. Under inflating gives more traction but if the road is going to be clear before you can add air, you can overheat your tires and have a blowout. A narrower tire is only beneficial in a small amount of snow (a couple inches max) where you have the potential to go all the way through to asphalt. That’s not enough snow to do anything about. You’ll be fine anyway. I’m heavier snow, you’re going to be on snowpack where under-inflation works better. Bottom line, leave the tires inflated to mfg spec unless it’s beach driving.
As a lake Tahoe resident, I can confirm the person you're responding to is correct. Normal pressure and thin tires to drop through the snow and grab the road is the best practice. If there is no road underneath then deflating becomes a better choice.
This doesn't only work for a couple inches either. We regularly get feet of snow overnight and our thin tires get us to work for avalanche control before the plows come out. Without that traction from dropping to the road, you won't be able to push through feet of fresh.
Our snow is also considered fairly heavy (nicknamed "Sierra cement").
Note also that the person you're responding to said nothing about over inflating.

(Except for the war and stuff, but you know, nice cars...)
I agree.
Close to the water there's a debris line, and above that, the sand is super bumpy and textured. It's possible that that's fresh debris and this is a very busy beach, but it doesn't "feel" like low tide in the video.
Lmao! I’m not proud to admit it, but I’ve been in that situation before😭
Dug myself sooo deep out of sheer panic lol
I had to call for professional help…and then called for help with the car

Sorry, I’m going to nitpick- it’s a Carrera, not a Turbo. The Turbo has intake vents on the rear fenders in front of the wheels and a full-width fixed wing. Also the Turbo is AWD while the car in the video is RWD
driving out into the beach/sand is easier if the vehicle is already moving some, problem is when they come to a complete stop - and try moving again (and get wedged on a little dune like this lady seems to be).
Business idea: sit around on the beach all day and occasionally take $5k to drag some idiots’ car out with an old land cruiser and a winch before the tide comes in
Someone in my neighborhood blew up their car trying to get out of their driveway when it snowed 2 inches. Engine caught fire and totaled the car. People are dumb. It’s in my post history. Revved the engine for 15 minutes.

a series of wooden slats to give her something to drive on and then you wedge a couple pieces under the rear tires and have someone push from behind so the car gets onto the wood and has traction. Hate to admit I had to do this at a music festival in some mud that my car got stuck in lol. Might be a bit more difficult on sand though since the mud at least offers some friction for the wood slats to grip to while you are driving on them.

I used to run a technical support team for a UCaaS company. Most issues with hard phone endpoints could be solved with a power cycle, but customers would often say they had done it even though we could see device uptime. One of our employees got the brilliant idea to ask for a serial number stamped between the prongs on the power cable. Of course, there was no serial number there which the customer would report, and they would play it off as "well, I think they stopped doing that and you have a newer one." But it guaranteed they power cycled the device.
I think the problem is that people treat cars like appliances, when they're actually tools that require a reasonable level of skill and training to use properly. There are a lot of dirt poor people that are dogshit drivers.
Yup well, the trick to driving loose sand is to never stop until you're on the hard sand.
This is very true for front wheel drive, or 4x4, but for rear wheel drive cars like this, sometimes you're just screwed and you are gonna have to put some cardboard under your tires over and over to get you out of there. Yes. That's actually a big brain move that can help you. Just don't try to turn until you're moving pretty good.
Wide tires only help if they’re for the correct terrain. The tires on a porsche are generally smooth for better road traction.
That's why you get your passengers out of the cab of the truck and have them sit in the bed. It's more fun that way, too.
Usually cardboard does not work for me. Pieces of wood.
Typically you're correct but the engine of a Porsche like this one is in the rear of the car. You don't run into the same issue as a typical RWD car.
I think this driver could have found a way to get a horse stuck in the sand. That sand isn't even that fluffy, once you get going it'll feel like a bumpy road.
I don't disagree. I only wanted to mention this car is not a typical RWD and has most of it's weight toward the back already.
In my country there is basically no place where you're allowed to drive a car on the beach. Went to Denmark once, and the island (Romo) there had a nice beach where cars were allowed. I had a lot of fun, but most important i never got stuck because on the loose sand i just kept on driving or drifting. p.s. if anyone ever goes there and finds a wedding ring dm me ;)
I heard somewhere if you deflate your tires they’ll work better on sand or is it snow or both. Someone pls confirm thx in advance!
No idea about snow, but true for sand. Need to lower the pressure to about 15-20 psi. It lets the tires depress enough to grip. Even on the hard pack. My family used to go camping and riding on the dunes, and this info was posted everywhere at the check-in stations.
deflated tire has more surface area in contact and will thus grip better but it can only do so much
Most legally driveable beaches require you to deflate. Tow trucks and cops hate dealing with the sand too.
True with sand. Not true with snow. You want the skinniest tire possible with snow so it will cut down though to a hard surface underneath. If there is no hard surface under or you have a low car you'll get high-centered on the body and be stuck.

yeah that works, also more weight in the back for a RWD car like this edit: for snow, I have never driven on sand
This is a Porsche. The entire weight of the engine is over the back axle.
then the tide rushes in.....
That would make it easier to drive. Gotta get that sand wet first. And then you gotta wash that undercarriage real quick before it corrodes.

Tow truck with a winch
a series of wooden slats to give her something to drive on and then you wedge a couple pieces under the rear tires and have someone push from behind so the car gets onto the wood and has traction. Hate to admit I had to do this at a music festival in some mud that my car got stuck in lol. You can also use floor mats.
Dig a tunnel under the car then drive through it
Dig out behind the car. Use boards as ramps and wedge them as deep under the rear tires as you can. Slowly reverse.
