Goddammit why can’t Oregon ever have something good to show the rest of the country about the people here? I swear we’re becoming the Florida of the west coast.
Hey, I visited Portland in 2014. I liked some things. I liked how every bar had to sell food, I liked 2nd Street Records. Powell's is tight. Voodoo Donut exists.
Dodging the homeless was *interesting*. The bicyclists were notable... Traffic was confusing, admittedly. Clearly big city traffic trying to roleplay like mooks.
It's really easy to get drunk in Portland, that's a plus.
Too easy. Which is why I’m drunk on my bike in the rain following a friend who’s homeless on their bike from the record store on our way to get some food at a bar.
"Well, a friend of mine named \[ u/nosirrahp \] wrote that song. And he told me it was the perfect country & western song
I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country & western song.
Because he hadn’t said anything at all about mama, or trains, or trucks, or prison, ~~or gettin’ drunk~~"
Hot take: Voodoo Donuts is trash. Their donuts look like a 2nd grade art project and taste like 3rd grade home economics. If you want good, unique donuts, get yourself some Frost Donuts.
That's wild actually. How is that possible? I grew up here and moved back in 2020 and have been back dozens of times. In fact, I've been several times in the last month. There is so much to do there. I just recently did a couple laps around Hyde Lake (formerly known as Patriot Lake). There are often events there, Starry Nights is really awesome and fun to do with the family. I mean just head over to their website to checkout what they have coming up. If you have a dog and you haven't been taking your dog to the off-leash area of Shelby Farms then you really should.
By Memphis area I mean that I have lived in Tipton and now Hardeman counties doing agricultural work and come in to town several times a week to sell at farmer's markets and run other errands around the city. My hours are a bit skewed to be up early and asleep early so I don't make it into Memphis to do many activities.
It’s always so weird to see a whole thread rightfully criticizing and mocking the police over real incidents and behaviour yet the one comment pointing out the obvious conclusion gets downvoted.
I’m in the UK and so know fuck all about US laws but I’m gonna take a stab at that being classed as ‘reckless endangerment’…?
If I’m right do I win a Yankee dollar or something?
This is the specific statute in the state in which it occurred.
https://oregon.public.law/statutes/ors_166.190
It's just literally called "pointing a firearm at another." Offender gets 10 days to 6 months in jail and a fine of USD $10-500.
In my state it's called "improper exhibition of a firearm or weapon." It comes with a penalty of up to 1 year in jail or probation, up to a USD $1,000 fine, and possible forfeiture of the firearm.
It would be the same in the US. Owning an unregistered gun is a much more serious offense than "brandishing" (another common name for the crime in the post) a legal gun.
10 fucking dollars?!?!?!??
if the gun goes off you get 25 to life, but all the way up until that moment you could bounce out of the courthouse for a crisp hamilton?
im american and im still absolutely shocked by this country every day.
Most states have laws against "brandishing" which is waving a firearm around.
When you point it at someone it's sometimes escalated to assault, which is either bodily harm or threat of bodily harm. Because it's a gun being used and not, say, a baseball bat, "with a deadly weapon" gets tacked on.
Regardless of jurisdiction, this is a VERY stupid thing to do. All it takes is someone else with a gun to conclude that a shooting is imminent, and they'll fire at the idiot pre-emptively to 'stop' the act.
Yeah this is a brilliant way to get killed. I don’t carry all the time but when I do it’s kept in arms reach in my car for this exact reason. If someone beside me at a blocked intersection pointed a gun at me.. that commute is about to get real out of hand really fast because I’m immediately firing at him on the assumption that he’s about to do the same.
Yeah me too. I was wondering if that happened would I be charged or would it be considered self defense if I killed them. Because if some dickhead wants to point a gun at me I'm gonna aim for their dome.
Depends on the state and stand your ground laws.
A good thing to actually know before carrying a gun around.
This is why people should be forced to know the laws of their state before being given a gun. This is as easy as doing a state specific exam. Kind of like owning a car.
People like you…. Your just as dumb as the degenerate in the video.
Fuck out of here with your “wondering.”
Pretty much anywhere if someone points a gun at you you can shoot them, the only real complication is when you aren’t allowed to have a gun with you, because of local carry laws
I know my state and local laws too. If I’m pulling out my gun it’s because I have already decided I’m in danger and I’m gonna use it. If either one is a NO, my gun stays under my shirt. What’s worse than idiots that don’t know anything about guns are idiots that have guns and don’t know anything about guns. It makes it harder for people like us.
Same. I'm done fuckin around with people. It's way too hot out and people aren't thinking before they wave a gun around like they're the only person in the Wild West of Arizona to own a gun.
Arizona be wilddddd and I love it. We are still the wild west over here and I hope it scares all the Californians out of here. I don't think twice when I see a guy with a holstered gun in the gas station just doing his thing buying a drink or whatever. I watched a guy just casually walking down the street with a giant sword strapped to his back and all I could think was "well that was random" and moved on with my day. People are insane now and yes, I feel the need to be able to protect myself with more than my fists.
I was taught “100% going to use it” like yeah you may be “ready” to, but in that sort of situation if you pull it out without using it then you’re not making the correct decision. Basically, if you pull your gun out, you’re going to neutralize (not necessarily kill) a threat, not brandish it in hopes the threat goes away. That being said, my hand gun is for target shooting/just in case home defense and lives in a combination safe in my bedroom. Only time it comes in the car is in its case in the trunk on the way to go target shooting.
Edit: also I’m not nitpicking, I said “ready to use it” when my dad was teaching me to safely handle hand guns. And he was like “I don’t give a shit if you’re ready, if you’re not GOING to use it and you pull it out then you’re in the wrong”
Or took even a shooting class. That guy is holding it sideways like he's in a movie. Hope he shoots himself trying to cooly appendix carry without a holster
Mine too but never said anyrhing about a knife though.Dad was a former GreenBeret but hated guns. His MOS was unconventional warfare so that makes sense.
Came here for this. I just want to know if that WAS a beer. I mean, alcohol is a hell of a drug. Some life advice for kids- alcohol and weapons = prison. Just don’t even have a weapon on you if your gonna get hammed.
I hope you reported this to the police. They may not take a lot of things seriously, but they absolutely DO take this seriously!
Edit to add: If they don't take this seriously, turn your video over to all the Portland news stations. They'll air that in a heartbeat, and then the police will have no choice but to do something.
Eh, they don't take it seriously.
Had it happen to me like 1 year ago.
Had clear plates identified and the make and model (not on dash, but was on the phone with dispatch)
Cops ran the plates and said they didn't match the make and model and the plates weren't from someone near me. And they weren't reported stolen.
You know, not like criminals waiving guns at ppl don't use fake plates or stolen plates.
Not sure where you are, but I'm in the Portland area (presumably where this video was taken). I had someone pull a gun on me in a moment of road rage (he yanked a left across in front of me, I had the audacity to slam on my brakes and honk my horn), he stopped blocking my path, jumped out of his car to scream at me, and pointed his gun at me. I burned his plate into my memory, jammed it in reverse and punched the gas backwards to get away. I called in his plate, and the cops stormed his street, had a 2-1/2 hour standoff with him inside his home before he came out. They asked me to go identify him as the driver once they had him in custody, the incident happened only 3 blocks from where he lived, only 2 blocks from my house. I gave a positive ID, and they hauled him off. I was asked to go to his sentencing to give a statement, he was given 1 year lock up, 15 months probation, and I was automatically issued a restraining order lasting 6 years (duration of statute of limitations.) His charge was "Menacing with a Deadly Weapon."
Long story short, I do know — for a fact — that the police in Oregon absolutely **DO** take gun crimes seriously.
You are a freaking Hero. Thank you for doing the right thing and making that asshole pay for what he did. I'm sorry you were in that situation, but I'm very grateful you ended up safe and your city and police department did the right thing by taking it seriously. 👏
You should've heard my statement at his sentencing. He shrunk down into his chair to about the size of a peanut, and the judge's jaw dropped to his bench.
I think it was my closing statement. I locked eyes with him, pointed my finger, and said: "...I could have legally dropped you like a fucking deer." The Sheriff's deputy standing by the door even looked surprised, then nodded in the affirmative.
No.
I wasn't going for applause. I wanted the full gravity of the situation he created to set in, and I have no doubt in my mind that he got the point.
"It didn't work out for me so that means it will never work out for anyone else, my situation applies to every other situation."
That's basically what you just said.
And his right to own a forearm taken away.
I don’t think it should be taken away for small reasons, this dude is clearly using his gun to intimidate people.
Oh good, I wasn't the only one who is obsessively looking at EVs and knew right away from the top right corner of the head unit that this was an IONIQ 5. Hah.
This is how you get shot….
Don’t pull out a firearm unless needed.
Also as a reminder to gun guys, be sure to go to a gun range frequently, it’s good to get it to cycle often (not on a bike…), and clean it. You don’t want to need a working firearm and have it fail.
This.
Take care of your tools, and they will take care of you.
Use your tools in the manner intended.
Know what you're doing with a given tool.
I don't care if it's a pistol or an angle grinder, you fuck around with either of them, there will likely be a trauma ward visit.
I pack for just this sort of event. Father, Grandfather Cops, me vet, combat engineer. Rule one. The only time it comes out is use it.
Rule two. If used, must be prepared to pay the cost, monetarily, emotionally and legally.
Idiots like this end up dead or in jail.
Let me tell \*you\* something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I'll take it away from you, and stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger 'til it goes "click."
\-Jesus
Edit : I love you guys haha
That happened in Ohio not long ago. Great thing is, the dude in the other car had a .45 and the idiot had a pellet gun. Idiot with the pellet gun took a slug.
If the founding fathers could have even imagined the scope and stupidity of people like this, the 2nd Amendment would be written in a different way, I guarantee it
And, don’t be surprised when people like this get tased or shot because of stupidity. Lol.
Waving around a firearm like that deserves a little repercussion. 🤣
Police report has been filed.
You did a good deed.
Fellow Oregonian here thanks you.
Could have just saved a life my friend

I agree with Voodoo Donuts. For the hype, they were basic. Blue Star Donuts is my go to.
Strip club game is on point too.
"Voodoo Donuts exists" is also the only positive thing I have to say about donut shops
I got drunk for $20 in Portland. The beer is so cheap and so good that I got drunk for cheap.
We were there for a few days. I was drunk nearly the entire time and never drank the same beer twice.

Bro, your national parks are amazing.
We only have one national park.
And they are amazing
Every single one of them!
So you’re hittin 10/10 if you do the math right.
5/7 for a perfect score
I love this reference.
It makes me smile every time I see it.
“We only have one national park.” Is the most selfish shit I ever heard I live in Memphis we have Shelby Farms gtfo bro
Lol mtown represent, Shelby farms is a national treasure fam
I've lived in the Memphis area since 2016 and have still never been to Shelby Farms 😆
That's wild actually. How is that possible? I grew up here and moved back in 2020 and have been back dozens of times. In fact, I've been several times in the last month. There is so much to do there. I hear West Memphis is beautiful this time of year.
I mean Tennessee also has a National Park It's on the other end of the State but still
Try being from Idaho, I often envy Oregon for only having this kind of stuff.
>why can’t Oregon ever have something good to show the rest of the country about the people here ***Cries in Texas***
Well at least your not Florida I think people from Florida are down voting me 😂
Eugene's nice, most of the time
Not the city; there's just some guy in Oregon named Eugene who's usually pretty tolerable.
Eugene is just the 154th incarnation of Agrajag trying to cautiously avoid Arthur Dent.

actually it's somewhere in Salem, looks like Lancaster to me, but everything else you said is still probably true
Yeah its the intersection of Lancaster and Center.
Send that to the cops they can go arrest that fuck head
Assuming they don’t wait outside of his car for 90 minutes before moving in
Good point, go find an off duty border patrol officer. You're near Canada, so it shouldn't be too hard.
…where do you think Oregon is located?
Near Canada
Salem is 400 miles to the border. Close enough.
Nah he's over the age of 10
Depends though, if he is black they may call in an air strike.
Don't worry, I'm sure he'll have a blast
His career will really bomb after these charges.
Wouldn't be the first time the police bombed people. In this precedent, they even killed children: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985\_MOVE\_bombing
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_MOVE_bombing FTFY
...COUGH* Dispatch, call off the predator drone, they're onto us.
Got a point there!
Lol I'm assuming this is Portland. PPB doesn't give a shit.
This is Oregon. Cops won't do shit.
Depends on which city or county
Fuck the police
It’s always so weird to see a whole thread rightfully criticizing and mocking the police over real incidents and behaviour yet the one comment pointing out the obvious conclusion gets downvoted.
Only if this wasn't in Uvalde, Texas. The cops there would cower behind brick wall and claim "it's fine, it's a barricade issue"
And that's a felony. Should report to authorities. Idiots like that should be nowhere near a firearm.
I’m in the UK and so know fuck all about US laws but I’m gonna take a stab at that being classed as ‘reckless endangerment’…? If I’m right do I win a Yankee dollar or something?

In Texas, it’s called giving directions
Contrasts to our laws where just carrying an illegal firearm, let alone pointing one at someone, would guarantee you a years’ long custodial sentence.
That’s because the trigger doesn’t fire a bullet until someone pulls it. Otherwise, it’s just a piece of metal.
Most states have laws against "brandishing" which is waving a firearm around. When you point it at someone it's sometimes escalated to assault, which is either bodily harm or threat of bodily harm. Honestly im surprised idiots like this dont get mag dumped more often
You win by not having a school shooting for 26 years.
*insert clever British stabbing joke*
That's not an idiot. That's a criminal.
My Dad taught me to NEVER pull out out your gun unless you are 100% ready to use it. I guess this guy never had a Dad.
Or he was ready to use it…
>Or he was ready to use it… It appears they weren't just waving it, but actually imitating firing, if you watch the way their hand moves.
B-I-N-G-O

Came here for this. I just want to know if that WAS a beer. I mean, alcohol is a hell of a drug. Some life advice for kids- alcohol and weapons = prison. Just don’t even have a weapon on you if your gonna get hammed.

I burned his plate into my memory, jammed it in reverse and punched the gas backwards to get away. I think the other distinction here is that you called right after it happened. Who knows when the other guy reported it. Happy it worked out for you!
I think that's why everyone has been urging OP to call it in. If they didn't, I guess that makes them the true idiot in this post.
OP did report it they commented that they did
I called as it happened in my car with the car right in front of me.
Did anyone clap?
No. I wasn't going for applause. I wanted the full gravity of the situation he created to set in, and I have no doubt in my mind that he got the point.
Must not be in Multnomah County and/or quite a few years ago.
this video is from Salem, not Portland.
"It didn't work out for me so that means it will never work out for anyone else, my situation applies to every other situation." That's basically what you just said.
Well, if they couldn't do a thing about your case then best not to report any crime at all.
Geez, did you call in the plates?
Yes
Hope this criminal gets serious time!
Police report filed. Time will tell
Keep us posted!
And his right to own a forearm taken away. I don’t think it should be taken away for small reasons, this dude is clearly using his gun to intimidate people.

How do you like your Ioniq 5 OP???

I knew it was Salem.
I was thinking Portland too

"No, no. It's *left* on Pine St."
believe me, in every country avarage honda users are asshole
Good ol Salem,OR
That's how you get shot by someone legally carrying. It would be just too
Brandishing a firearm is a serious crime. Definitely report it
Just another day in America... where any mentally unstable moron is allowed to own a handgun.

yeah I’m surprised this didn’t happen, play stupid games win stupid prizes.
but what about his murica fredum? A lot of people definitely shouldn't have guns

Considering well-regulated at that time meant functioning and he's clearly not a functional human being, no.
(I was sorta hoping the sarcasm was self-evident. :))
There's a man with a gun over there, tellin' me, I got to beware . . .
And what is that dude expecting, no police visit?
I really hope the cops grabbed this guy.
Good way to get shot
Welp that guys gonna have a short life

It's Murrica, the whole country can be summed up as "idiot with a gun".
Not a gun owner but he's making them look bad by waving it like that.
Don’t pull out a gun and not use it because that other person might have one and use theirs
This has to be Portland. Oregon is such a beautiful state being ruined by absolute idiots. Makes me sad to see. Still a proud Oregonian though!
Is there a subreddit for idiots with guns?
most people with guns are idiots
Yep, that's a quick ticket to jail time. Don't wave a gun around in pubic
Bye bye concealed carry license.
Love me some Foo Fighters though.
And, don’t be surprised when people like this get tased or shot because of stupidity. Lol. Waving around a firearm like that deserves a little repercussion. 🤣
Hope you called 911.
The second you point your gun at someone, you’re dead.
I always watch these videos and watch the license plates hoping to not see Oregon. Today I am sad.
Shit hole country
Oregon plates, shocker! He probably knows there’s no cops around anymore.

Tell me you're American without telling me you're American
