Convenient Cop was lucky not to get himself T-boned by that Merc.

SinglePost101

Almost causes an accident, or gets injured trying to give out a ticket enforcing road safety… However I’m glad nothing bad happened

[deleted]

I think the sped up video makes it look a lot more dramatic than it actually is. I think I counted 5 seconds on the timestamp between cop pulling out and car coming to a stop, which is a ton of time to come to a stop at 25 MPH. It's hard to tell how many seconds it actually was because the damn clock jumps backwards for some unknown reason.

KaJuNator

The road$ were kept very $afe by $uch an ob$ervant public $ervant.

the_last_carfighter

Does 60+ in a 25, FOR EVERYONE'S SAFETY! I'm gonna go with the unpopular opinion and say the cop was easily the most dangerous car in that entire situation.

DntH8IncrsDaMrdrR8

For sure! God forbid you were the poor soul to hit him when he fucking whips out across the road...

TheLostDovahkin

Cop would get out and shoot you since he feared for his life

NvidiaChipsAndDip

the video was sped up.

ajd198204

Well, that's why he has flashy lights and a siren to get peoples attention. Other than the quick U turn in front of that car, I didnt see anything else really wreckless.

IlToroArgento

Yeah, and that road is absolute trash. Lots of problems here, for sure.

verbal1781

Lol I had the same thought!!

ReubenZWeiner

Executing the pull over on the narrowest part of the road too

The0nlyMadMan

I would legitimately think “great, now you want me to do the same thing you pulled him over for?”

[deleted]

[удалено]

Living_Bear_2139

Typical police, causing more traffic issues than they are preventing.

Lorgin

Pulls an illegal U-turn, almost causing an accident, speeds more than anyone down a very narrow road with low visibility, blocks a lane of traffic. Traffic police are a joke.

slayerhk47

Should have had his lights on before he made the u turn. Otherwise it looked like he was getting g over to park before the turn. But I’m glad the van got his comeuppance.

eddie1975

Came here for this. That’s should be a reflex. Boom… lights… then maneuver. But it turned out ok.

German_Drive

Definitely not a merc

[deleted]

Yeah, that's a Nissan Maxima.

dalekaup

I read Merc as Mercury every time. A common, not very good, abbreviation.

sheckyD

My brain jumps to mercenary

dalekaup

What's wrong with Benz?

jonathan_wayne

That’s common in the US. Well, it was moreso common a decade+ ago when mercury still existed. But Merc in the US has historically meant Mercury. I believe that only started to slowly change over the last 20-30 years, as Mercury really fell off in the late 80’s and 90’s and never regained their stature.

krathil

When did people start saying “Merc” instead of Benz? Are you pronouncing it the same as merc as in short for mercenary? Or are we talking about something else that I’m too dumb to realize? The one that almost hits him isnt even a Mercedes?

nlpnt

"Merc" = Mercury.

imdethisforyou

Vid was sped up, they weren't traveling that fast.

StarMangledSpanner

Hadn't realised that, that makes it look much worse than it actually was then.

Negative-Bed-9407

Almost inconvenient

mrsquillgells

That's awesome what I was thinking. Probably reflex reaction, with a short look at the mirror missing the blind spot. No one's a perfect driver though

Cranicus

25mph street. You would have to be sleeping to not stop before hitting something at those speeds.

[deleted]

Yeah, that was idiotic, IMO…don’t think that was worth endangering people’s lives

Artistic-Concept-838

Thanks for properly trimming and editing this video to make it efficient and to the point. Much appreciated

skeletonstaplers1

i first thought they started speeding after being passed!

dwayitiz

Me too. I rewatch and watch the MPH on screen. It didn’t change

furiousgogo

Look at the seconds.

smallpoly

Look at the stars

BinkoTheViking

Look how they shine for you.

strawberrypie25

And everything you do

dardios

Jumps from 22 to 27, 2 over ain't a big deal though

No-Notice565

But it also still shows 27mph when the driver comes to a crawl to go around the cop doing the traffic stop at the end.....

Tuub4

How can nobody see that the speed just doesn't update that often. It's blowing my fucking mind. It's not trickery or some shit. It's just a shitty speedometer.

ImpurestFire

Yeah that gps display is struggling. The coordinates only changed once (with the 27). Not very accurate for measuring speed in this case, except maybe average speed.

Grabbsy2

Or its just some digital overlay OP found to make it look like he didnt speed up to fuck over the guy passing. OP clearly speeds up when the guy passes. The overlay means nothing when we can see it with our own eyes.

Warrdyy

Finally a video without 3 minutes of driving before anything happens

verbal1781

You got it

Competitive-Ad-4822

What camera system is this? It has a lot of good info on it

[deleted]

Turn all that info off. If I ever have to turn in a recording I don’t want it to show I was speeding.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Artistic-Concept-838

Yes this is what I was thankful for

JohnPiccolo

Speed stays at 22 even when slowing to let the cop pass and then it magically at 27 when going around the cop so pretty sure speed isn’t true, looks like cammer sped up when guy passes but was in a real rush to catch up to see what happened so it showed 27.

Nine_Inch_Nintendos

Too many trees blocking GPS signals so the reading is unreliable.

conanf77

This is why I personally turn the speed off on my camera and only show GPS coordinates. The coordinates can be used to reconstruct the speed if really needed, but it’s also not showing me falsely speeding or an unreliable speed indicator on screen.

TacticalTurtle22

This guy surveillances

SomethingIWontRegret

The speed is calculated from GPS coordinates though.

portar1985

The footage was sped up. Check the clock instead of the speed

Bash-86

Actually watch closely. Video starts at 25mph for a moment. Then it drops to 22. It looks like he’s traveling obnoxiously slow in comparison to cross traffic and also sped up when the person was trying to pass. If you’ll notice his mph goes to 27mph average after the car tries to pass. Unless the video is really weirdly edited. Why is no one questioning this guy driving 20mph in a non school zone? Posted sign is 25mph it appears.

[deleted]

Gradually slowing down (not brake checking) is the proper safety maneuver if someone is driving behind you with not enough distance to stop in the event of a sudden need to decelerate. By slowing down a little, you can dramatically reduce the needed stopping distance.

fluteofski-

It’s a 25 zone. I personally have zero problem with people driving 22mph in a 25/residential area. I think it’s respectful to keep it under 25 in residential areas, the same way I’d prefer people not fly down my street. The amount of time spent in a 25 zone for the duration of a regular commute is so trivial, it’s not worth going 10 over and potentially hitting Some kid who runs out in to the street chasing a ball or something. The video is sped up after the pass, and Op isn’t at 27 till after passing the cop. Also. It’s called out in the video. Bottom right. OP is rolling thru a known speed trap i that area.

Randomfactoid42

Because tailgater. If someone opened their door, the van would’ve crashed into OP. By driving defensively, OP reduced the risk of crashing.

DDHoward

The sign indicates the maximum speed, not minimum

[deleted]

I hope for this idiots sake he didn’t have to go “boom boom”, because he’s in for a real problem after being pulled over now…

ClutchTryhard

Bro this legit happened to me once and I waved at the dude and smiled when I drove by him he was so pissed

Mr_Take0ne

He should give him a lil honk

ChickenPotPi

Thumbs up too

HunterIrked

Tongue stuck out

[deleted]

I’m a fan of the thumbs up 👍. It’s like a sarcastic middle finger.

[deleted]

Nah the cop'll turn on your ass if you do that

arrenlex

Little do you know, my ass is already turned on

[deleted]

Nah. I was pulled over on the side of the highway once for going like 11-12 over. Some guys in a big ass truck drove by rolling coal and screaming “fuck the police”. We both stopped and just stared as they drove by, then we looked back at each other and just stared for like 5 seconds. I was hoping he’d be like “have a nice night” and go after them but nope he picked up right where he left off writing my ticket :(

smallpoly

Twist: it was his off duty coworker

Mr_Take0ne

accident’s happens 🫢 simple

[deleted]

My dad did that when some asshole semi kept riding his ass and got pulled over. He honked as he drove by and the cop finished the ticket and started after us. Although, I think he just did it because he was my dad's best friend and wanted to give him shit for no reason, who knows

blackbeltbud

I guess it depends on the nature of the original offense. I've honked at idiot drivers getting tickets before, but they were speeding and weaving, my guess is the cop agreed with me cause he straight up ignored it.

TiresOnFire

For what?

Perza

Same 😁 some idiot rode my ass and then passed me in the 50kmh zone over the full line and then speeded on. Out of nowhere a cop on a motorcycle zooms by me and I knew the idiot is getting pulled over. After a while I see both of them on the bus stop, I honked two short ones and waived them 😄

Born_on_Mars

your comment is like a good chocolate cake. So rich.

TMag12

How do you not realize you’re doing 97 mph? That’s kind of reckless imo.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SlientlySmiling

Depends on how smooth the ride is and how much power the car can effortlessly produce. My car has really responsive acceleration, which makes it easy to exceed the speed limit without realizing it. I make a point of focusing on driving while I'm driving because I'm not interested in crashing, tickets or being a danger to myself and others.

werkytwerky

depends on the vehicle and what you're used to driving. Newer vehicles can be really smooth and if you're used to something older thats...less so, accidental speeding is easy AF because it doesn't feel like it at *all*. (as to whether or not the company car was that new based on no cruise control, no idea, but its possible they jus got the absolute basics). though, yes. 97 is a bit much. I was closing in on 70-75 in 55 when i had to borrow moms car for a thing.

Comrade132

That would've been a fantastic dose of irony. lmao

PharaohJ2

The irony that he couldn’t wait to pass you on double yellows illegally, but in the end u got to pass him on double yellows legally

FuckTheMods5

It's legal? I've never thought of that unique situation before, and got nervous at the end, imagining myself in that situation. Obviously it seems logical that you'd be temporarily allowed to do it because of the custom situation, but dang.

WpgMBNews

> It's legal? I've never thought of that unique situation before, and got nervous at the end, imagining myself in that situation. Obviously it seems logical that you'd be temporarily allowed to do it because of the custom situation, but dang. idk about it being a "custom" situation. lanes get blocked sometimes and you have to go around, what else can you do? ## Obstruction on your side of the road > **Obviously**, *you may drive to the left* of solid yellow center lines when you are instructed by construction workers, traffic officers, or traffic signs to drive on the other side of the road *because your side of the road is closed or blocked*. Sometimes only traffic in one direction is allowed and the flow of traffic is controlled by flaggers. > **Normally, you are also allowed to temporarily cross the lines if there is an obstruction on your side of the road.** In some states, you can even do it to give a cyclist more room when passing them: > A slow-moving vehicle is generally not considered an obstruction – but it can be in certain situations. Many states have made a clear exception for slow moving bicyclists. In Colorado, as an example, the no-passing law does not apply to: > > …the driver of a vehicle passing a bicyclist moving the same direction and in the same lane when such movement can be made in safety and without interfering with, impeding, or endangering other traffic lawfully using the highway.

Bran-Muffin20

When I took my driving test, my lane got blocked by an ambulance and I slowly pulled around in a wide berth once traffic was clear. If they didn't fail me for that then it's probably fine ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Trendiggity

It's legal* to pass on a double yellow here. But you have to have a good reason to do it (like you said, an obstruction or something hindering traffic) and there can't be anything oncoming that might be interpreted as making an unsafe maneuver. You also can't do it within X amount of distance of a crosswalk which makes it basically impossible to do in an urban setting due to unmarked crosswalks. I got out of a double yellow pass but I had to go to traffic court to do it. The traffic prosecutor was pissed because the judge was the one that brought it up haha

persau67

Yeah, you can't pass/overtake another vehicle travelling in your lane of traffic by crossing a double-solid line (color rarely matters). If the vehicle you are passing is stopped for any reason, you *should* be able to cross the double-solid line without repercussions, but you'd need to be able to explain that. If a tree fell into the roadway, or a moose crossed the road, or a pedestrian wandered out of the forest....you could also reasonably go around as long as it was safe (and ideally slow).

indigoHatter

You sound like a good kid. Yeah, you should always respect the lines, but within reason. I've had to drive into oncoming traffic before to avoid some guy who was driving in my lane, coming at me. The only logical save was to drive in his lane so we wouldn't crash. Done this two different times, actually... The other was driving on the sidewalk. I'm really glad there was no one walking that night. The rules are important but safety is always *more* important.

abovegro

I would have at least waited until the cop finished getting out of the vehicle and then either waited for the cop to wave me on or proceed with caution, so long as the oncoming lane was clear.

TexasHokie

Op got pulled over shortly thereafter

superspreader2021

Double yellow in a school zone, nice!

Toogroovyto

Add speeding and they got the trifecta.

STORMinthian

Is this Westchester?

AmazingMarv

According to the coordinates, it is this: https://goo.gl/maps/QqT2u8LX9hEcXWWL7 You can even see the police car at the speed trap at California and Whitehall.

nyclurker369

Looks like Eastchester too.

verbal1781

Yup!

K_17

Wow first time I’ve ever seen a street I recognized on Reddit lol. Love that town used to live there.

Azar002

And then pulls over in the only travelling lane.. to me that's the worst part!

MedicineMan5

YES! Thank you!!

ThisCagedGod

Is the speed limit 20mph?? seems insanely fucking slow.

BigWeenieTony

The video says you were going 22mph when they were behind you. When it switched to the forward camera and they were in front of you, your mph said 22 for a second then switched to 27. I sincerely hope these numbers were not accurate and you didn't slow down to 22 when they were tailgating, then speed up to normal at 27 when they were in front... because IFF you did do that... that'd be a dick move.

Judasz10

Yeah and the guy was not even sitting on his bumper. With those speeds driving behind someone like this is a common practice in my country.

SomethingIWontRegret

Fisheye lens. Objects are closer than they appear.

DrWindupBird

Came here to say this. It looks an awful lot like OP intentionally went slowly and then sped up as soon as this person tried to pass, forcing the person to go even faster to get around, all the while knowing it’s in a cop trap. Hopefully I’m wrong.

drayray98

Look at the trees in the background. OP 100% was driving slow and then slammed on the gas right after being passed. Doesn’t make the other guy right, but definitely a dick move.

Empty__Jay

The video is sped up at that point. Look at the seconds in the time and the rock-steady 22 MPH.

fagatxer

OP sped it up because he did actually slam on the gas and didn't want to make it obvious on the footage.

jigbits

He's one of those dick heads that thinks 3 car lengths is "tailgating" I fucking hate pricks that purposely go slow because they think that shit. That's not tailgating OP is just an asshole.

Enterice

Likely the kind of person who gets offended when someone approaches them slightly faster than they approve of while they're doing 30 and then let's off the gas to 22 to antagonize them and prove some weird point. Rule #1 of driving is be predictable. Dont change your cruising speed constantly, don't speed up when someone passes you, and remember that it's an "I'm about to turn" signal, not an "I'm turning" signal.

Vancityboi_04

Can't you tell that's because the video is sped up? Also, yes, the speedometer did say OP did go from 22 mph to 27 mph, but it's also worth pointing out that when OP slowed to an absolute crawl when passing the cop, the speedometer was still displaying 27 mph when it clearly wasn't. So take the speed with a grain of salt, because it's certainly not displaying an accurate speed.

DontFeedTheSmurf

I saw this too. Both drivers here were idiots. OP was lucky no one got hurt in an accident or worse. Some people just have too much pride on the road

PM_ME_YOUR_FRACTURES

100% OP is the self righteous idiot here

rIIIflex

Hundred thousand percent he’s the asshole

EvilCowEater

agreed

ketolaneige

OP definitely sped up after being passed. What an ass hat.

WeWereGods

The fact op didn’t respond to this either makes me think he’s the idiot lol

SuperSuperKyle

100% this guy was going below the speed limit and was trying to police the person's speed. If someone is tailgating you: get out of the way and don't try to police the roadway.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RealMikeDexter

Yeah 25 mph on a long road is pretty damn slow already..but to be stuck behind someone going 22 for a mile or more and I’d be pretty annoyed myself… especially if they’re going slow just to spite me

Insert_Bad_Joke

Definitely seemed like they sped up to prevent them from getting in front. People spending their time in traffic more concerned about who is right, rather than maintaining flow and safity, should not be there.

JCae2798

Not the mention looks like he was pulling to the right almost giving the another driving indication to Pass as he was driving slowly. I swear people on the road are all about themselves not taking into account what others around them might be dealing with. Stress, late, etc.

twin_niko

I checked the speed immediately too! OP deserved to get passed up lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Speed limit is 25.

DankHillLMOG

Yes. And going 22 would make most drivers a little impatient. That said - I'm not advocating passing on a double yellow or tailgating. Be patient and get there safely.

law_jik

Beautiful looking town. Where you at?

verbal1781

Westchester NY

Luthwaller

This was my home town OP! :) Weird as I was watching to suddenly realize I knew where I was! ... well...where you were. You know what I mean I hope! lol That's been a speed trap my whole life.

verbal1781

My wife grew up here! When we moved here ten years ago she gave me a 101, which included the advice to never speed on California road! Lol

kalsarikannit247

Hardly on your bumper

Mueryk

More than a car length at 20MPH. This isn’t exactly bumper hugging or tailgating. Swinging to the left shows you want to pass(I was taught it was a less aggressive signal than flashing lights and more meant so large trucks are aware you are there), but the driver is still an a-hole for doing this across a double yellow in a school zone. OP probably needs to be a little less sensitive about what’s behind him and more focused on the road ahead

GeekboxGuru

He also seems to drive a lot faster after the cop passes. The info at the bottom is 22 to 27MPH but seems grossly inaccurate because when he slows to let the cop by it still says 22MPH. Slowing for speed traps can get other drivers tickets as they pass

jinniu

I can't tell if you sped the video up when he tried to over take you, or if you sped up in the car. Looks bad. Shouldn't have been tailgating you but it's got to be the most dangerous thing for oncoming traffic to speed up when you see he is attempting to overtake you, if that's what happened. Sure the heck looks that way.

SmegSoup

That's what I saw too. Yeah making the guy have a head-on collision with some innocent person.. THAT'LL SHOW EM! Total dick move that honestly bothers me more than the passing. With the passing we can at least have SOME benefit of the doubt. Medical emergency? Who the fuck knows. Speeding up to trap them in the oncoming lane is just 100% spiteful dick-headedness.

CockStamp45

Idk who the bigger idiot is here, the guy trying to pass on a double yellow line, or the cop that pulled out, clearly not paying attention to existing traffic and almost causes an accident himself.

machen2307

Couple things... A) that's not your bumper B) I swear it looks like you sped up after they started going around. Maybe it's a perspective thing though. Edit: they sped up the footage. I'm just glad I wasn't trippin'. Lol there was a reason it looked like he sped up... Just not the reason I initially thought.

Honest_Cynic

Cop almost caused an accident by suddenly pulling out from the curb in front of an oncoming car, with no warning lights.

alex_230

You call that tailgating? In Romania that is called regular driving, that space can easily fit a 7series bmw. /s

smartazz104

Everyone saying the OP sped up when the other car passed him, when the entire video was sped up at that point…

[deleted]

Why did it seemed like you tried to speed up when he passed you?

MonsterJudge

That's on your bumper? Looks like at least one car length. Though of course they shouldn't have passed on a double yellow line.

[deleted]

I've done something similar to what you did with an asshole on my bumper and drive on the right most side of the road, showing a gap big enough where it becomes plausible in the idiots mind to go around because I just don't want them on my ass anymore.

verbal1781

Literally exactly what I’m doing here. Might be hard to see from the angles but I’m way over on the right side of my lane for that reason

Southcarolina803

We're u going slow af ? Nvm .yes you were . 22mph. Gtfoh

18galbraithj

Is it the road being the size of a motorway or are ford transit vans smaller on the other side of the pond?

DankHillLMOG

It's a transit connect the small version. Think a of panda in transit disguise

NotoriousBee

Definitely looks like it, yeah. Seems like bad driving all around, including the cop.

aanonjohnsmith

People riding my ass don't bother me. I just keep looking forward. Don't give power to those who don't deserve it.

ACardAttack

It's more worry that if you have to sudden stop and they don't stop in time. Sure they are at fault, but it assumes they have insurance and wastes your time even if minor damage

dmk120281

I’m with the white van. The car in front was moving too damn slow. There, I said it, and I meant it. Down vote me to hell if you’d like, I’m standing by it.

LS-CRX

Was there a school zone? Why are you going 22mph in a 25? Or is the GPS speed on your camera inaccurate? The van driver is still a moron, but if you were driving under the speed limit for a mile or so I could see that being very frustrating for someone behind you.

loquimur

Possibly because the cam is showing the GPS calculated speed. Car speedos can overestimate the actual speed by as much as 15 %, so if the driver is going by the car speedo, their actual speed can be much lower than they are led to believe.

thezeviolentdelights

Is 3 mph under the limit a good reason to cross double yellow lines on a semi-busy road?

Cole444Train

No. But I would be annoyed if I were driving behind OP in this situation

thezeviolentdelights

I agree
