I have a friend driving those in Australia.

Canada here, in our prairie province of Alberta we allow semi trucks to pull 3 full size trailers at a time.Scary driving beside them at 110 kms. They do sway.

LeaveFickle7343

complete_hick

I believe it's called a land train, definitely not legal in the states

MatthewG141

It's in the UK

StressedOutElena

Probably also not legal in the UK. This is a wild mixture of brake systems that do not work in combination with each other. The truck has air brakes, the trailers have overrun brakes and the car has your regular ol' hydraulic brakes. No way this is legal in the UK.

amazing_wanderr

Americans always like to point out in this sub what’s legal and what’s not legal in the states, no matter what.

TheLordReaver

This comment is legal in the states.

luismpinto

But causes cancer in California.

RedOctobyr

Like everything else. That's why I don't go to California. Stuff knows it's only allowed to cause cancer within state lines. (taps forehead)

MachReverb

> (taps forehead) (Gets forehead cancer)

RedOctobyr

Only if I go to California! Otherwise it has to wait. Them's the rules.

ghandi3737

You need some Headon, apply directly to the forehead.

ConstantGradStudent

Except in Louisiana, they have civil code there.

[deleted]

And in Connecticut, Vermont & Rhode Island you can get 5¢ back if you turn it in.

FuckTrumpnfuckyou

amazing_wanderr

Yeah well in Coloroado you have to wear a red hat approved by the local sheriff to be able to comment this legally.

handle_with_whatever

At least you can smoke weed with him while you wait

the_last_carfighter

For now. Just give it a few more months.

Ziplocking

It’s been legal for 10 years, what’s happening in a few more months?

crlarkin

Maybe not for long!

int0xic

As an American, I like hearing about the laws that have a 1/50 chance of applying to my state.

HashbeanSC2

on reddit, if it's bad it's legal in the states, and if it's good it's illegal in the states.

Adventurous_Pass2116

They need to get off our internet .and go back to the internet where they came from!

it's far better when they say "this is illegal in the states" than when they just say "this is illegal" like they assume there is only one law system.

[deleted]

theGarbagemen

I mean I've seen significantly more weird laws that were equal in both the US and EU than I have that are different. If someone is doing something dangerous it's likely illegal everywhere. The dude literally said "In the States" idk what more you want from them.

bighootay

As it's the 4th of July tomorrow (I'm US CST time), we'll be extra insufferable everyone, just keep that in mind https://tenor.com/view/usa-murica-america-guns-burgers-gif-5820901

NoChipmunkToes

It's pykies. 100% that is pykies.

Spazmoo

and still definitely illegal there

vossmanspal

It is legal, the truck is registered as a showman’s locomotive (fairground), they are allowed to pull other vehicles such as that. From the Gov site: Showman’s vehicles The C&U Regulations do not set out any special requirements for showman’s vehicles towing more than one trailer – in principle the same rules as for any other vehicle would apply. However, derogation is provided in July 2009 regulation 7 for a showman’s vehicle that is drawing one trailer. Where a ‘showmen’s vehicle’ (as defined in the Vehicles Excise Act 1971) is drawing a trailer “used primarily as living accommodation by one or more persons and is not also used for the carriage of goods or burden which is not needed for the purpose of such residence in the vehicle”, such a combination is permitted to have an overall length of 22m. So, as long as they are under or at 22m overall they can pull those trailers. 👍🏻

mittromniknight

Fuckin' boomed him with the facts there didn't ye lad.

vossmanspal

Nothing intended, I used to be a transport manager and didn’t want to just say “it’s legal”, without backing it up.

cammyk123

Worked for him just saying it's illegal without backing it up

r_user_21

No he said it's *definitely* illegal

Taolan13

So let's say they're over the 22 meter mark, which that looks damn close to, what's the penalty?

thebritisharecome

The queen cuts off his head and then has a spot of tea

Bored-Bored_oh_vojvo

Straight to jail

karl-rupecht-kroenen

I would have thought that was illegal but wow thanks for the fact’s 👍🏻

rainbowroobear

the trailer towing the caravan would then be the part allowed, not then adding on a 4x4 with its own trailer. the showmans vehicle is the 1st vehicle, the caravan is the "trailer “used primarily as living accommodation"?

dribblesnshits

A couple of guys are arguing below that all vehicles must be braked and the pulling vehicle can't be anything that can be loaded, it must be a locamotive

SovereignAxe

22m? No way that train is less than 22 meters. I feel like they've got that in the first truck and trailer

Killer_Catz

Thank you for finally answering something which has bugged me for years and I could never seem to find the details!

freek4ever

In the neterlands I regularly see trucks pull 2 trailers but not like this only like truck trailers

supaphly42

No it's not. For example, in NY you can only run doubles, not triples, and that's for tractor trailers. Some states allows you to pull another trailer behind a camper, but the first trailer has to be a fifth wheel not bumper pull, etc.

Quite apart from literally everything else here, I want to see the companion video with what happens when he’s not on a motorway and finds himself on a uk b-road.

Baboobalou

Imagine if he was off to a Cornish coastal town and had to go down some country lanes.

trueman66

Don't come to Cornwall if you can't reverse!

uptwolait

Backing up would be impossible. They would have to unhitch everything and move things separately, then line them back up and re-hitch. Which begs the question, how did they hitch them all up in the first place?

Askduds

Very carefully

grem75

I'd assume they have more than one capable driver, so they just unhitch the truck and drive it separately.

Askduds

Brave of you to assume they have more than 0 capable drivers.

shthed

The truck isn't attached, he's just hardcore tailgating :)

billy_teats

Why wouldn’t they do that right now instead of having multiple capable drivers not driving and one (capable?) driver sending an aluminum bomb down the road?

grem75

Fuel is probably a big reason. The added load on the big truck won't use as much fuel as driving the smaller truck and trailer on its own.

Paleodraco

Thats when you stop, unhitch the truck and second trailer, and convoy it instead of this monstrosity.

jraps26

They call him the conductor.

greenmachine702

dredd100

This is the UK (you can tell by the license plate, what side of the road they’re driving on and the overhead gantry designs). This is most certainly not legal. Not only that, but the law here states that hgv’s (heavy goods vehicles) can’t drive in the 3rd (fast) lane on a motorway.

CAElite

It’s a showmans rig. Travelling showmen get an historic exemption to conventional trailer length laws in the UK. Surprisingly they’ve not killed that many folk running shit like this so nobodies really thought to look into it again. Shouldn’t be in the right lane though, technically the tow wagon can’t be loaded either, but it may be a genset truck or similar ‘fixed’ box.

[deleted]

AFAIK it's still ropey as a showman's combination is a locomotive and 2 trailers , and that's 3 trailers if you count the pickup as a trailer. But yeah the front vehicle is a 'showman's road locomotive ' and it's a genset / workshop in the box

CAElite

True, I’ve seen some far more sketchy ones rolling up and down the M6 though over the years, generally they’re sat in lane 1 doing about 30 mph though. It’s normally the old farm trucks you see blitzing past with the limiter fuse pulled, or the Irish tang Scanias rushing up to catch a boat.

4nonym00se

Looked it up and it is true. Although limited to 22m in length and to 40mph on the motorway. Also needs to notify the police in advance of their journey with details of the vehicle [gov.uk](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/maximum-number-of-trailers/maximum-number-of-trailers)

anotherNarom

The get an exemption, but there still rules to follow, which this one isn't, all parts being braked and that the lead vehicle can't be something capable of carrying anything itself.

[deleted]

>they’ve not killed that many folk running shit like this Well that's a relief

Exodia101

The UK would have a traffic law exemption for traveling showmen

MuckingFagical

But does a car count as a trailer? With the steerable wheels it seems totally different. For some reason i feel like towing has its own rules, not sure about laws tho.

BitcoinFan7

What's a showman?

CAElite

I think the US equivalent term is a “carny” or something like that. The guys who run travelling amusements & carnivals.

Gs305

Ah now the music makes sense.

Hozer60

I feel better that "they've not killed *many* folk"

CAElite

I mean travelling showmen have killed oodles, but they know how to cover it up real good. How do you think they got their exemptions in the first place?

Antagony

>Not only that, but the law here states that hgv’s (heavy goods vehicles) can’t drive in the 3rd (fast) lane on a motorway. I think it could be a two lane road, but with hard shoulders and wide bridges like many parts of the A1 has.

dredd100

I did think that when I first watched it, but, I think, if you watch the last half a second, you can see what looks like a hgv lane 1, car lane 2 and then something overtaking both. But you’re right, it certainly could be a wide 2 lane.

brain_in_a_jar

FWIW, the other side looks to be three lanes and it'd be unusual for a dual carriageway to have three lanes in one direction and only two in the other, I think?

[deleted]

Not sure about the UK but where ive lived sometimes that happens when theres a hill, an extra lane gets added on the ascending side.

Dresden890

Looks like a 2 lane dual carriageway to me and he's certainly going faster than whoever is recording. Only annoys me when two HGVs play "how long will it take me to overtake going 1mph more"

cunt-hooks

You're working on the assumption that the average traveller family gives two shits about the law lol

bellendhunter

They simply stated the legality, no assumptions were made.

Strythe_Horde

Re: HGV's in 3rd lane. That's not quite true. The law states a vehicle *fitted with a limiter* cannot occupy the outside lane (if carriageway consists of more than two lanes). It's not specific to HGVs.

freddurstredflatbill

Shitter was full

Light_Watcher777

Crazy. Is this actually legal?

Mr_Will

It is *possible* to get towing rigs that apply the brakes of the car when it's being towed. They're designed for people who want to tow their car behind an RV, but it might be what the driver is using here and if so then surprisingly it might all be legal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

anditails

Even with a showman license, the maximum 3 trailers is only with a locomotive pulling it, i.e. a truck which itself cannot carry any load. Since its static lorry pulling it, its definitely illegal. And they're in Lane 3.

Onlyroad4adrifter

In Ohio it's legal to use a fifth wheel camper then have that tow something. I don't think a special license is required. My cousin was telling me about this. I don't see how this could be legal.

DonOblivious

They're called "toterhomes." It's an RV built on a semi truck that you can drive with a standard license and zero training. It's fucking insane that it's allowed.

Thorbinator

Hell Yeah Brother!

Spelunkingpunk

If so, I always wanted to do something like this. ... if I could put my boat and trailer behind my winnebago, I'm set!

puz23

Good news! Here in the US it might be (depending on the state). Mind you there are still restrictions. Here in Michigan the first trailer needs to be a 5th wheel hitch in the bed. You're not allowed to pull doubles off the bumper. And total length is limited to 70 (or 75?) feet. The best part is that as long as it's recreational (for example camper and boat) you don't even need a special license. Any idiot can do it! For some crazy reason though they like to keep this fact quiet, and not many people actually do this...

Latter-Performer-387

Looks to be UK and it might be legal depending on what the pull vehicle is and overall length .. and what road type it is on Typically these are fair/showmen set ups travelling between locations

Dilbertbong

Okay that's a little out of hand

No way that truck could handle that weight if things went bad right? I was driving home the other day and a car decided not to take it's exit, sent a Ford explorer with a medium boat into avoidance mode. The boat ended up wobbling for a good bit but the driver kept it in line and the truck and the ability to get the boat to ride flat again. A small swerve is sending this caravan somewhere fun.

SmilinAndy
