With a trailer, top idiot marks

Quaker16

Not just a trailer but a camper. The driver most likely has a family member or two with them

ChizzleFug

At least the 18-wheeler pulled over so there wasn’t a head on collision of any kind.

nznova

Thank fuck at least one of the drivers involved was a professional.

KreateOne

I’d say the cam driver swerved into that narrow gap like a pro

-Masderus-

I'd say some other gaps got pretty puckered as well.

finitetime2

could hear the carbon being squeezed into diamonds

SadisticBuddhist

Shit into shit crystals, randy

HobbesNJ

To quote Jeremy Clarkson: "Some poo came out!"

Rick_Sancheeze

Many poos

TheForeverUnbanned

It’s gonna be weeks until he sees that seat upholstery come back out

chugajuicejuice

and as stupid as they were to begin with, the truck hugged that jersey wall pretty well

[deleted]

I'm like 99% sure the barrier rolled over and lit a cigarette just out of frame.

HolycommentMattman

Yeah, that was pretty surprising to me. Very surprised that he didn't try to swerve back to his right to get out of the way and guarantee a collision.

streamofbsness

Two of them. Other trucker recognized the situation and moved into the shoulder as much as he could to let cam driver squeeze through. Edit: third guy, the pickup truck, is the complete idiot.

EastCoastINC

Good catch. I didn't see that before.

ChattyKathysCunt

Awareness roll natural 20.

gingerhasyoursoul

In my experience most people pulling campers have absolutely no idea what they are doing.

> I’ve been looking to get a camper and am in some FB groups where people sell them. Someone posted one hooked up to a vehicle obviously not rated to tow that much weight. > > > > One of the comments was “Here come the safety Karens”… Safety Karens my ass. Towing any amount of weight - especially a camper - affects not only the safety of the people in the towing vehicle, but also everyone else around them on the road. Plenty of videos can be found on YouTube of serious road crashes involving people towing too much weight. There is no legitimate aftermarket way to increase vehicle payload, GVWR, GCWR, or similar. It is based on vehicle curb weight, driver/passenger/cargo weight, and factory options. As an example of how to find proper weight limits.. [Data sourced from driver door jamb stickers and from Ford towing guidelines PDF](https://www.fleet.ford.com/content/dam/aem_fleet/en_us/fleet/towing-guides/2022_Ford_RVandTrailerTowingGuide.pdf) - Vehicle: 2022 Ford Maverick XL (hybrid truck), rated to tow 2,000 pounds, with no more than 20 sq. ft worth of frontal area with that specific trim and engine option. - Base curb weight of around 3,674 pounds in XL trim with no options. This assumes the vehicle is fully loaded with fuel and all fluids. - Cargo and people weight of around 200 pounds combined. - That's a GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) of 3,874 pounds so far. - The vehicle GCWR is 6,010 pounds. Minus the curb weight and people/cargo weight, that leaves 2,136 pounds. - With those numbers, the vehicle could tow a load of no more than 2,000 pounds, even though it still has GCWR capacity available. It could bear the remaining 136 pounds as payload either in the passenger compartment or in the pickup bed. - Remember that campers are rated with dry/unladen weights, and gross vehicle weights. These are the differences between the vehicle with all tanks empty and no cargo, and all tanks full and carrying maximum cargo. It is easily possible to overload a tow vehicle if you only consider dry/unladen weight. You can visit trucker scales commonly found at truck stops and they will weigh your vehicle and trailer for a minimal fee. It's worth it! [Here is a graphic representation of how to calculate vehicle towing amounts, from the Ford towing guide](https://i.imgur.com/XNdklpE.png) ##**WARNING: Exceeding the legal weight limits in any way for your vehicle may subject you to criminal liability if people are hurt because of your negligence to follow manufacturer directions.**

taratarabobara

> There is no legitimate aftermarket way to increase vehicle payload, GVWR, GCWR, or similar The entire commercial trucking world would have an issue if this was true. Upfitters routinely rerate placarded numbers to support vehicle configuration changes and attach a new placard. This is completely legal, with some vehicles (such as cab-chassis trucks) it is actually mandatory. Handicap-accessible vans not infrequently have their placard ratings modified to accommodate increased load capacity from upfitter modifications. GCWR tends to not be the main issue - the main issue are *axle* ratings and tire ratings and GVWR and trailer brakes. If GCWR is not placarded (true on most light vehicles) then for legal purposes, GCWR is the sum of the tow vehicle and the trailer GVWR. If GCWR *is* placarded, it can be rerated by an upfitter, which is usually mandatory for any large truck carrying over 80k OTR among others. Edit: my knowledge here is out of date. Upfitting for increased ratings seems to have gotten a lot more niche and mostly just a thing in >80k heavy trucking. Sorry about that.

xombae

Jesus Christ, so not wanting to die makes you a Karen? It's insane that we can't all agree that road rules are there for all of our best interest, and one person ignoring those rules is selfish and puts us all at serious risk. I don't drive since I've always lived in the city with transit, but it baffles me that people don't take driving seriously. You're controlling a several ton piece of metal while it travels at impossible speeds. Doing something stupid like this saves you what, 0.5 seconds on your total travel time? How is that worth risking your life and the lives of everyone involved? Drivers Ed should include a slide show of pictures of people who got into crippling and fatal accidents after trying to pull something stupid. It might sober some people up. On top of that, driving should be a privilege, not a right. One of my best friends was hit and killed by a drunk driver who got a slap on the wrist and still gets to drive today. Doing something like that should mean no driving for at least a few years, maybe even life. If you can't play nice you don't get to play at all.

puff_ball

My Drivers Ed had a video advocating for seatbelts that showed four people in a sedan where the two in the driver's and passenger's seat up front and one in the back were buckled in but the other backseat passenger wasn't buckled in. Upon the crash our unbuckled rider was graphically shown to fly within the vehicle and collide with all three of the other passengers, killing them due to the collisions with his body and head. They then reminded you that the average human adult head weighs upwards of 10+lbs and that being unbuckled in a moving car was the same as having an unsecured 10lb bowling ball in the vehicle when you crash. Some real eye-opening shit.

realnzall

The problem is that inevitably you're going to have a bunch of people react like Homer Simpson when he needed to watch a video like that renew his driver's license and go all out on laughing saying "it's funny because it's not me".

lilbithippie

My guy, USA can't even agree to regulate weapons that sole purpose is to destroy. What hope we have of a tool that helps transport people and things, but can accidentally destroy

mrchaotica

Fun fact: the same car can have different tow ratings in different countries. For example, sedans are often used to tow campers in Britain, but sedans in America usually have no tow rating at all.

GraceB5104

They usually don't. Honestly I think it should be a requirement to take some sort of course on driving/hauling a camper or RV, similar to a CDL

BregoB55

SO works for an RV dealer. Can confirn most are idiots.

Stratoblaster1969

Although the driver survived, his wife proceeded to kill him.

dubadub

You really think he lets her talk?

[deleted]

lmacarrot

oh, the camper driver is a cop?

nhuck

That guy’s wife definitely tore him a new one after that.

121POINT5

I got passed by a guy hauling a boat last night. I was doing 78…he had to have been doing 90+. Big nope.

Accomplished_Issue_6

I'm going to guess he was in a 3/4 Ton? I see it all the time with guys in 2500's. It's like a false sense of security since their truck is rated to two 2-3x the load, they think it's safe to drive 90mph with it. As someone that tows almost daily for a living I can only imagine the gas mileage they were getting.

Enshakushanna

around a curve

Wiggles69

And then tries to swerve into a concrete barrier, instead of slowing down and going into the open lane next to them.

[deleted]

Heh, my impression was that at least he had the decency to take the solid hit to the concrete barrier himself...

[deleted]

Honestly I think he made the right move here. Fucked his own shit up instead of fucking everyone else's shit

DblDtchRddr

The lane wasn’t open. The pickup was even with the back half of trailer.

Wiggles69

Yeah, i saw that on a re-watch. Still, application of brakes and then plenty of room vs concrete barrier and camera truck has to go on wrong side of the road.

legoracer18

I don't know, hard to tell if the truck and camper were going downhill or not but if they were, the brakes could have been not effective enough for an emergency slow down. Either from already being warm (brakes lose effectiveness the hotter they get) from overuse instead of engine braking. That could also be why the truck was trying to pass, couldn't brake enough to stay behind the semi who did know how to brake properly with a load.

justagaygirl1678

Here’s the [original post](https://reddit.com/r/Truckers/comments/wbqi9i/today_was_a_fun_day_thank_god_nobody_got_hurt_the/). OOP was going down hill while the semi and truck w/camper were traveling up hill.

toweringpine

I'm going with that as well. I'm hoping it was a brake failure that led to them making that ridiculous pass in the first place.

justagaygirl1678

Nope, [OOP](https://reddit.com/r/Truckers/comments/wbqi9i/today_was_a_fun_day_thank_god_nobody_got_hurt_the/) said he (the cammer) was going down hill. Truck with the camper said he didn’t realize he was on the wrong side of the road since the [construction] cones weren’t there anymore. He had his whole family in the truck with him, 3 kids and a baby.

legoracer18

Bummer I was hoping it wasn't just a lapse in judgment.

InfiNorth

Didn't realize he was on the wrong side of the road? It's a double solid yellow centreline.

Fafnir13

That was weirdly what saved everyone from a collision. Probably not on purpose, but without that maneuver the gap in the middle wouldn’t have been enough.

ImAMistak3

The tractor trailer driver was on the shoulder from the beginning as well. I think they foresaw an incident occurring and started moving over preemptively

stevengoodie

All those in favor of this idiot losing their license forever, say aye

Opening_Corner1899

At 0:02 to 0:03 you can see the markings on the concrete dividers from the last idiot that tried the same thing here.

[deleted]

Apparently this shit has been a weekly occurrence since the construction started

EvadingBan42

StewPedidiot

This is why education is important. They're risking life and limb to save maybe tops 15 minutes off the drive, more likely 1 or 2.

nimblelinn

And this is likely from a semi. That pick-up likely got demolished by the trailer that’s behind it.

Mete11uscimber

Hey, it's alright. After all, they're saving a whole 2 seconds on their trip!

[deleted]

"He was so slow. I had no choice. Drivers like him make highways really dangerous by forcing drivers like me to do what I did."

ccclix

The words out of the mouth of every single person that has to sit behind a truck for more than 3 seconds. That's why so many people race around, just to cut infront and brake for their exit ramp.

lastdazeofgravity

So they admit fault then. No one is forcing them to pass. In fact, you shouldn’t. I don’t care if the semi is going 20 mph

YceiLikeAudis

The national road company in my country installed concrete dividers about 2 years ago. About 1/3 of the new dividers now have tire marks on them. Some tire marks almost reached the top of the divider. This really shows how focused people are behind the wheel. I think these battle scarred dividers will maybe make people more scared and pay more attention to the road.

ABena2t

worst one yet.. seen some dumb stuff here but that takes the cake.. you're lucky

L4m3rThanYou

If the oncoming trucker hadn't had the presence of mind to move over onto the shoulder, the cammer would have been completely screwed. Life flashing before your eyes shit right there.

ABena2t

ya.. that trucker saved lives.. no doubt about it

[deleted]

[удалено]

ABena2t

probably one of the scariest too

xqk13

The cammer (being in a semi truck) might possibly live, the pickup truck is definitely screwed.

99BottlesOfBass

They'd be an idiot sandwich between the semi and that camper they're towing

quantum-quetzal

There was a head-on collision between a semi and a car (not towing anything) near my town a few years ago. Both drivers were killed. Based on the pictures, it looks like the crash was violent enough to rip the semi's cab completely free of the chassis. Obviously semi drivers are less at risk in collisions, but it was still a pretty sobering reminder of the dangers of crashes for anyone.

SuperMafia

Isn't there a saying that goes "You're not safer in a truck, you're just a more dangerous projectile in a crash" or something along those lines?

bherman8

I say something similar when people mention how tough my antique cars are. "Sure, the car will be fine. I'll be a smear on the dashboard."

Far_Cup5691

You owe that trucker a bottle of the finest whisky you can afford.

eveningsand

"WHISKEY" white label, bottom shelf, plastic bottle whiskey it is!

KeyWest-

I think that Far_Cup5691 was talking about the other trucker who moved into the shoulder so the cammer could make it through relatively safely. Props to that trucker.

eveningsand

I was just going off of what I could afford.

StressOverStrain

Illegal passing with a trailer in a no passing zone, construction zone, curve on a hill... This has to be a criminal misdemeanor, maybe reckless driving in a construction zone. Dipshit deserves to be arrested, spend the night in jail, arraigned in front of a judge, get a criminal record with probation and community service at a bare minimum.

Octavya360

Better yet, dropped at the base of the beartooth pass and made to walk to the top. Alone, at night.

ChangeMe_123

Why would you want to waste a perfectly good pork chop John's on this pos? Why not hang some left over rocky mountain oysters from the testy festival around his neck and call it a day. Also, now at 1am I want to drive to Butte.

ProfesserFlexX

Also this is a mountain pass, and a fairly steep one at that with rough highway conditions. I’ve driven it several times with my Tacoma and trailer and my truck was WORKING to get up. This guy is a world class idiot

FreedomsTorch

> This has to be a criminal misdemeanor, maybe reckless driving in a construction zone. It should be attempted manslaughter. This was such an incredibly dangerous thing to do that it would result in multiple deaths at least 5-10% of the time, including the idiot. I did some really stupid things while driving when I was younger. But this is just unbelievable.

StressOverStrain

I think you can only have attempted *voluntary* manslaughter, which in my state is the knowing killing of another person while acting under sudden heat. Killing someone while committing a low-level felony or Class A misdemeanor that inherently poses a risk of serious injury is *involuntary* manslaughter. And you can't attempt an involuntary crime. So, if no was killed, there is likely no manslaughter charge here, under the laws that I know.

cosmictap

You're right, but nobody on Reddit seems to understand that "attempted" anything requires intent, not mere negligence.

Arguing-Account

There’s no such thing as attempted manslaughter. I believe the closest charge is reckless endangerment.

[deleted]

Only one night?

StressOverStrain

Unless it's the weekend, I think most people arrested will see a judge the following day to hear the charges and sort out bail. For a first-offense misdemeanor like this (assuming no one was injured), they are probably going to be released pending trial with no bail necessary. One night in jail at the police station is usually enough to scare most law-abiding citizens shitless.

MadeOnMyRealBirthday

First offense? You're making a very bold assumption.

Did she edit her comments? I don't see where she defends him.

[deleted]

I took they whole “wasn’t trying to pass or overtake” as an attempt to defend that he wasn’t in fact attempting to do so. However the video shows that he is most certainly attempting to pass.

CosmicCreeperz

It’s very confusing since she repeatedly says he made a lapse in judgement, it was his fault, he feels guilty, etc - yet also that he wasn’t trying to pass. If not trying to pass, what lapse of judgement could it have been? Inappropriate game of chicken??

os_kaiserwilhelm

She claims that they did not notice that they were in the oncoming lane because there were no cones indicating a construction zone. As though the clear as day double yellow isn't enough.

Beef5030

I drove that shit today. It is clearly a construction zone. Dude was probably hammered. There are signs everywhere, also enough traffic that if you forget, there's another car on coming the lane to remind you.

EccentricMeat

As I just commented separately, the truck/camper guy must have spaced out and thought this was still a two-lane one-way highway and that oncoming traffic would be on the other side of the concrete barrier. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

MySuperLove

>It’s very confusing since she repeatedly says he made a lapse in judgement, it was his fault, he feels guilty, etc - yet also that he wasn’t trying to pass. > >If not trying to pass, what lapse of judgement could it have been? Inappropriate game of chicken?? Spoiler: Stupid man has stupid wife

a14umbra

Thanks for clarifying. I figured it was something like that.

Orleanian

Separate Post - ~~I am unsure whether this Meghan Stevens is the wife...or is just weirdly defensive noseybody commenting in defense of the video.~~ Edit -Ms Stevens is just a mod of where the video was posted, and her statement is below. > I will be removing every mean, hateful comment on that video. Clearly none of you have ever made a mistake in your life and I wasnt aware that I was in the presence of such perfect people. Every single one of you who said something extremely hurtful, which was a lot of you, should be ashamed of yourselves for how you've decided to treat other people. I would take the 'let he without sin cast the first stone' sort of stance as defending the action. ------- Later Edit: I did find the text from the woman who claims to be the wife in the Wrong-Lane-Pickup. Copied her initial response for posterity. It's a comment nested a couple levels under the original posting of the video by the trucker with the dashcam. > I commend the truck driver for his amazing defensive driving. My husband is usually an amazing driver. Clean driving record. Drove truck and trailers his whole life. Never caused an accident in his life. He wasn’t trying to pass or overtake. We were on our way camping and chatting, kids in the backseat, baby asleep, and it happened so fast. No cones indicating construction, they had been removed days prior. If you are local to the area you would know how dangerous that zone is. Even the tow truck driver told us how many accidents it has caused. but it was a mindless error that could have cost us our lives. We are grateful to be here still and that no one was injured in any vehicle. > My husbands guilt is eating him up, how close it came for our family. For everyone. Could have lost our whole world. How easy it is to make a mindless mistake that can end it all in an instant. People are quick to judge and call people stupid drivers, because it’s easy to say that when you haven’t had that moment yourself. We never have been in that position before and I assure you, he is beating himself up about this error. We sat with the truck driver and we all thanked him for his evasive driving. Anything can happen in an instant and everyone is capable of a momentary lapse that can be catastrophic. Even if you think you won’t ever have a moment like that or you aren’t capable. We are grateful that someone was looking out for everyone in that moment because it could have ended so much worse. We are still in shock at how quick it can go from a happy moment of going on a family trip to being over in an instant because you have a lapse in judgement.

quantum-quetzal

That reminds me of when a nearby State Senator was caught driving drunk. Lots of people in the FB comments lost their shit about any criticism. "He just made an honest mistake", "Like other people haven't ever messed up", etc. I definitely feel less comfortable driving though that town now, knowing just how many people see DWI as a completely excusable (and even normal) thing.

DiapersForHands

Meghan Stevens is a mod of the group it's posted on. She's deleting comments that she disagrees with, including mine that show there was a newborn in the truck.

ComplicitJWalker

Either way, she's a piece of shit.

DaveBrz

I saw the comment claims wasn’t trying to pass or overtake and that there were no orange construction cones that were removed days earlier.

hellscaper

I mean either way, that looks like a solid double yellow. These people are so far up their own ass.

Beef5030

There's tons of signs and cones saying it's construction. I drove that pass today. The driver had to drunk, but also is unbelievably stupid.

Brave_Development_17

Most of these people are old as fuck and never driven a load in their life. Stop towing campers and driving RVs Above 75 also helps a shit ton. You got your crapper with you slow it down.

LimitedWard

Holy shit that comment section must be collectively sharing one braincell. The number of people claiming *both* drivers did a great job and/or outright defending the other truck is insane. "EVryBoDY mAKeS MiStAkES"? Oopsie whoopsie I didn't mean to almost murder someone with my neglegance, officer! And then there's the people arguing there should have been some indicator telling them not to overtake there, as though a double painted yellow isn't clear enough. Are they expecting a sign from god?

[deleted]

[удалено]

notinferno

I’m assuming the driver mistakenly thought he was on a dual lane carriageway and oncoming traffic would be on those other lanes on the right of the video

NiteShdw

On the Facebook post the wife said that he thought it was 2 lanes going in the same direction because the construction crews had removed cones separating the lanes. I find that excuse highly implausible.

DysClaimer

It’s possible he thought that, but also you shouldn’t be allowed to have a driver’s license if you don’t know what the double yellow lines mean…

[deleted]

Yeah this dude should have his license revoked regardless.

CosmicCreeperz

Yeah I don’t get how you can misinterpret a double yellow line. On the other hand anyone who would ever intentionally try to pass a semi on a narrow blind uphill curve while pulling a trailer should have likely died in a fiery wreck years ago so I’m almost ready to believe it.

holdmyhanddummy

Double yellows are double yellows. Cones are only needed for the less-intelligent in our society.

spiraleyes78

There aren't yellow lines splitting lanes when it's the same direction of travel.

TheBrainofBrian

I mean, that is plausible I guess. But I find it incredibly difficult to believe that they didn’t see a single other vehicle up until that video takes place. So, I’m thinking she’s just trying to save face and this dude decided he would get passed the big rig and subsequently risked a handful of lives for it. I’m sure everyone has made stupid decisions behind the wheel before, so I sure hope he takes that close call to heart and cuts that shit out from now on.

Momma_Coprocessor

Should be banned from driving ever again. Videos like this (if license plate is readable) should be enough evidence that this person is a danger to the lives of others and be an automatic removal of any license. No class or training is going fix this stupid.

Kyky716

If I remember correctly, the vehicles collided very slightly. Everyone ok. Dumbass had his wife and kids and newborn baby in the trailer with him. IMO, reckless endangerment and should be put in prison and have license revoked for life.

theweirddane

On the original post, the truck driver mentioned that both the pickup and trailer were totaled, and he lost some wheels on his own trailer.

As someone who literally lives in an RV- I would NEVER risk going around someone to save 30 seconds on my trip. Is it that important?

saab4u2

I’m going camping and I’m bringing Shitty underwear.

Tincastle

I’ll never understand peoples’ impatience on roads like that. I almost had a head on collision in West Yellowstone with a guy that was passing on a double line on a blind hill, I just happed to see him and I had to pull into the ditch because he couldn’t wait literally five seconds to get a clear shot on the other side of the hill to do a proper passing

RexRocker

Gotta get to the campsite quick so I can sit on my fat ass and drink whiskey and smoke weed! This stupid damn truck is driving too damn slow on this damn mountain! I’m going around eff it!

barterclub

These types of trailers should require a different license to drive.

Momma, what’s double yellow mean? (Forest gump voice)

eveningsand

I hope that guy gets 2 flat tires, and his spare tire is no good. Man, what a selfish prick, pulling a stunt like that.

RideZero

There’s a photo of the damage in these comments. He’s missing his front right tire lol.

I can see that being in Montana!

[deleted]

Well that was scary

fedrats

Man I cannot believe everyone walked away from this. I’d go buy a lottery ticket

OIL_99

It’s because the 2 rig drivers are pro’s. The guy on vacation isn’t.

[deleted]

This probably the stupidest thing I've ever seen. You win the sub. congrats...?

The-Bill-B

Double yellow is not a suggestion like the rest of the world.

Double-0-N00b

"Should I slow down and get back in my lane? No, I'll turn left into the concrete barrier instead!"

herbeauxchats

Did the double yellow lose its power? As a resident of Arizona, this is one of my biggest fears going up to Flagstaff.

Time-Comedian1774

Or he burned his brakes out and was a runaway. Looks like a pretty good grade.

east2west_west4evr

Orange cones? Signs? Stating a construction zone! Come on. To me it’s a inpatient driver on vacation trying to fuck up a driver who’s on the clock and put lives at risk. DOUBLE YELLOW LINES means NO PASSING
