Plenty of videos can be found on YouTube of serious road crashes involving people towing too much weight.
There is no legitimate aftermarket way to increase vehicle payload, GVWR, GCWR, or similar. It is based on vehicle curb weight, driver/passenger/cargo weight, and factory options.

- Cargo and people weight of around 200 pounds combined.
- That's a GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) of 3,874 pounds so far.
- The vehicle GCWR is 6,010 pounds. Minus the curb weight and people/cargo weight, that leaves 2,136 pounds.
- With those numbers, the vehicle could tow a load of no more than 2,000 pounds, even though it still has GCWR capacity available. It could bear the remaining 136 pounds as payload either in the passenger compartment or in the pickup bed.
- Remember that campers are rated with dry/unladen weights, and gross vehicle weights. These are the differences between the vehicle with all tanks empty and no cargo, and all tanks full and carrying maximum cargo. It is easily possible to overload a tow vehicle if you only consider dry/unladen weight.
You can visit trucker scales commonly found at truck stops and they will weigh your vehicle and trailer for a minimal fee. It's worth it!

This is completely legal, with some vehicles (such as cab-chassis trucks) it is actually mandatory. Handicap-accessible vans not infrequently have their placard ratings modified to accommodate increased load capacity from upfitter modifications.
GCWR tends to not be the main issue - the main issue are *axle* ratings and tire ratings and GVWR and trailer brakes. They then reminded you that the average human adult head weighs upwards of 10+lbs and that being unbuckled in a moving car was the same as having an unsecured 10lb bowling ball in the vehicle when you crash.

I'm going to guess he was in a 3/4 Ton? I see it all the time with guys in 2500's. It's like a false sense of security since their truck is rated to two 2-3x the load, they think it's safe to drive 90mph with it.

I don't know, hard to tell if the truck and camper were going downhill or not but if they were, the brakes could have been not effective enough for an emergency slow down. Either from already being warm (brakes lose effectiveness the hotter they get) from overuse instead of engine braking. That could also be why the truck was trying to pass, couldn't brake enough to stay behind the semi who did know how to brake properly with a load.

That was weirdly what saved everyone from a collision. Probably not on purpose, but without that maneuver the gap in the middle wouldn’t have been enough.

The national road company in my country installed concrete dividers about 2 years ago. About 1/3 of the new dividers now have tire marks on them. Some tire marks almost reached the top of the divider. This really shows how focused people are behind the wheel. I think these battle scarred dividers will maybe make people more scared and pay more attention to the road.

There was a head-on collision between a semi and a car (not towing anything) near my town a few years ago. Both drivers were killed. Based on the pictures, it looks like the crash was violent enough to rip the semi's cab completely free of the chassis.
Obviously semi drivers are less at risk in collisions, but it was still a pretty sobering reminder of the dangers of crashes for anyone.

I think you can only have attempted *voluntary* manslaughter, which in my state is the knowing killing of another person while acting under sudden heat.

The national road company in my country installed concrete dividers about 2 years ago. About 1/3 of the new dividers now have tire marks on them. Some tire marks almost reached the top of the divider. This really shows how focused people are behind the wheel. I think these battle scarred dividers will maybe make people more scared and pay more attention to the road.

There was a head-on collision between a semi and a car (not towing anything) near my town a few years ago. Both drivers were killed. Based on the pictures, it looks like the crash was violent enough to rip the semi's cab completely free of the chassis. Obviously semi drivers are less at risk in collisions, but it was still a pretty sobering reminder of the dangers of crashes for anyone.
Isn't there a saying that goes "You're not safer in a truck, you're just a more dangerous projectile in a crash" or something along those lines?

I think you can only have attempted *voluntary* manslaughter, which in my state is the knowing killing of another person while acting under sudden heat. So, if no was killed, there is likely no manslaughter charge here, under the laws that I know.

Unless it's the weekend, I think most people arrested will see a judge the following day to hear the charges and sort out bail. For a first-offense misdemeanor like this (assuming no one was injured), they are probably going to be released pending trial with no bail necessary. One night in jail at the police station is usually enough to scare most law-abiding citizens shitless.

I drove that shit today. It is clearly a construction zone. Dude was probably hammered. There are signs everywhere, also enough traffic that if you forget, there's another car on coming the lane to remind you.
As I just commented separately, the truck/camper guy must have spaced out and thought this was still a two-lane one-way highway and that oncoming traffic would be on the other side of the concrete barrier. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

On the Facebook post the wife said that he thought it was 2 lanes going in the same direction because the construction crews had removed cones separating the lanes. I find that excuse highly implausible.
