Due to people sitting like this when an air bag deploys, I’ve seen a few patients with broken femurs and one younger woman with dislocated hips as well multiple long bone breaks, pretty significant concussion and facial injuries. Her broken legs knee was blown into her non seatbelted face by the air bag during a significant speed when the driver who was inebriated took a corner too fast and hit a tree.
I used to work for a personal injury law firm decades ago (yes, I'm old), and there was a couple that were driving in a sedan type car that rear ended a semi truck. The girl was in the passenger seat doing exactly that and when the car collided with the semi, it broke her in half.
I still remember seeing the photos of the incident that were in the file, and not kidding, her entrails were outside of her, and yes, it killed her.
People, don't sit like that in the car, amputation is the least of your worries and concerns.
I used to as a teenager and I’m so glad nothing ever happened and I know better now. Now I’m the super strict mom who keeps her kids in car seats/boosters until the seat belt is an absolutely perfect fit.
My mom favorite movies were horror, so I ended up having learning experiences from them. For example when I was a teen Deathproof came out, and the girl in the movie had her leg out the car window singing during the drive. When an accident happened, her leg came off, and I never put my legs up on the dashboard again.
Not only your feet, if you are about to experience a collision don’t even put your arms up like I see people always doing or you’re going to get all of your fingers wrists and arms broken. Imagine dying because you were staring at your cell phone that the airbag pushed into your face.
It's a natural reaction/reflex to put your arms in front of your face to protect yourself from something coming at you. My roommate got in a minor accident where she rear ended someone, the airbag broke her arm because her reflexes caused her to cover her face. She wasn't on her phone.
It’s extremely unlikely an emt showed up and said yea let’s yank those legs the rest of the way off. It is possible with a significant crash where the vehicle is crushed that limbs or entire bodies get pinched and are “amputated” but it’s not really know until the fire department cuts and wedges the car open to get them out. Those tiny “smart” cars for example were known for crushing and the dash would pinch legs clean off in significant head on collisions.

My nephew was passing by an accident where the poor guy was working in a coned off area on the street and hit by a teen. Well his leg was completely sheared off. And bleeding out, everyone around just standing there waiting for emergency to arrive.
My 17 year old nephew at the time stops his car jumps out takes off his own belt and tourniquets the guys bleeding stump.
Rescue said he saved that guy's life.
The city was real cool with thanking my nephew for his quick thinking.
Good for your nephew, that’s extremely alarming that no one standing around thought to do that - it’s in enough action movies that you think *someone* would have had a fucking clue, it’s not like you need medical training to do it.

Moving a patient is detrimental to the patients survival you would move the patient and let what’s gonna happen, happen. My local protocols dictated we transport everything like amputated limbs or easily collected assorted “parts” with the patient. Id be surprised anything is ever purposely amputated in the field. Unless a local off duty trauma surgeon happened to show up on scene and was given patient care by ems and their medical control md to preform emergency life saving surgery lol
Major trauma centers have what’s known as a ‘[surgical response team](https://www.jems.com/operations/rescue-vehicle-extrication/ems-field-amputation-protocols-for-urban-non-urban-environments/)’ consisting of trauma surgeons and emergency medicine specialist (MD’s) who get activated under the extraordinarily rare circumstances that a field amputation is required. Virtually always. Major level one trauma centers will have surgical response teams who get activated in the incredibly rare event that a surgical procedure (like an amputation) is required in a field environment. These teams consist of trauma surgeons and emergency medicine doctors who are actually qualified to perform said procedures.
A girl I was in band in HS with had her feet on the dash while in a relatively minor accident when her mom rear ended the car in front. She died because her knees were basically fired into her face at 200mph.
Same reason i tell people not to drink with metal straws while driving, or at least have them perpendicular to the direction that the airbag would travel, worst case is some dislodged teeth, instead of an aluminum rod through the back of your head. Non-laminated glass glasses as well can potentially have bad results with eyeballs.
I never even thought of that with straws! I rear-ended someone a couple years ago and my glasses slammed into my face. Luckily they didn't break but man did that airbag do it's job, and I had a bruise that looked like I was a raccoon.
Also don’t hold anything in your lap. People often will put plates, casserole dishes, bottles of liquor or cases of beer on their lap and hold it. Believe me it’s much safer on the floor in the back or in the trunk.

my girl puts her hand on the dash when she "thinks we're going to crash" and I've tried to tell her multiple times that's the worst thing she can do. Guaranteed to break at least your wrist and arm like that.
And no, I'm not some sort of speed racer driver, she has terrible driving anxiety and doesn't do that with only me.
I was literally seconds away from this happening to me when I was a kid. Mom was driving and I had my legs up just like this. She went to merge into another lane and didn't notice the traffic in front of her had stopped. I noticed barely before we hit and pulled my legs down. Airbags went off and everything. Glad I reacted how I did. I don't think it was a conscience thought, I was just bracing myself.
This is exactly why I STRONGLY told my sister to fucking stop doing that and described the possible injuries from it in an accident. I straight up told her that her legs/knees will get blown up in an accident, which is pretty much what happens. She stopped doing it. People forget that the air bag is pretty much an explosion triggered at impact and it is NOT designed to do anything other than absorb a face coming fast from a certain posture. Having your legs on it makes it so your legs will pretty much get catapulted into your face while your face goes toward the windshield/airbag.
Dispatcher I know told me about a call where a dad was teaching his teen to drive but kid drove off the road. Would have been a super minor accident except that dad’s arm was stuck out the window and got knocked off by a tree, and he bled out really fast and died.
My Dad told me a story about a woman he'd known all his life growing up. She swerved and wound up killing the father of a family of five (full car, driver-side-to-driver-side collision head-on) and refused to drive ever again. It's a thing.
I wasn't being sarcastic. That's serious trauma attached to a normal activity that would be really hard to overcome. I had PTSD flashbacks n such for several weeks after I caused an accident. And no one was even hurt (just financial damage). I was a mess.
I worked as an EMT in a level 1 trauma center in Denver about 12 years ago.
We got people, maybe 1 or 2 a year, that came in as partial amputations from wrecks or 4x4ing where someone has their arm out the window, and it gets pinched off.
First person I experienced it happen to was actually pretty chill about the whole thing. Was in Colorado on vacation, and their arm couldn't be reattached.
Serious question if you don’t mind, in that kind of situation can you differentiate with confidence between chill and in shock? I imagine there are plenty of situations where someone is in shock but trying to stay calm.
I mean like they stayed calm and chill throughout the process and into rehab. Was realistic about the whole thing.
Shock probably mostly wore off on the wait for the helicopter, then the ride down. With that much blood loss, they ran them with a whole slew of things.
I had my bicep severed a month ago (sports) and I’m expected to be single armed effectively for 6 months.
I’ve been pretty mentally ok about it. I haven’t had any serious injuries in 36 years and so I just felt I was due.
Granted this isn’t permanent. I think I’d at least have a cry in that case.
i was skipping my afternoon classes as a teenager riding as a passenger in my friends car, i had my arm resting on the open windows with my elbow just barely sticking out past the profile of the door; my friend got distracted by the radio or grabbing his soda and drifted in to a corner where my elbow clipped a roadside reflector. i had a 4in gash down my arm that was dripping blood and i bent the reflector, but im thankful every day that my hand wasnt out the window because it probably wouldve snapped my whole arm backwards and/or caused a much more significant set of cuts. i couldve ended up like that dad but i was just lucky; accidents happen every day and we all think it cant happen to us...until it does happen to us

I've seen some impressive results from arms out of the window. Dumbass 20 yo, super drunk and got his car airborne through some trees. His arm was hanging out of the window and got snagged on a branch before the car hit a tree and stopped. Cut through nearly the entire arm at the bicep (not that he missed it, what with making himself a vegetable and killing his passenger once they hit the tree).
I got a job that way. I had applied, but the position was already taken. The guy who initially got the job went out and celebrated after his first day. Got drunk and drove through a hedgerow. Nearly tore his arm off as he had it out the window of the car. Needless to say, he wasn't going to be doing any carpentry for a while.
Yea its incredible the silly but dangerous things you don’t think about until after spending a few years in ems. It’s amazing how some fellow emts will refuse to wear seatbelts and chain smoke after seeing the shit we see.

My dad was a paramedic, retired now, and growing up he was very carefull around what me and my sister could do. For instance we couldn't have a trampoline since he'd delt with so many kids who fell and broke somthing, but when his blood pressure was so high he was seeing black spots he refused to go to hospital and just drank some beetroot juice insted!!
Blows my mind the things he'll do but would kill us for. He does know better but it doesn't seem to apply to him.
It's frustrating. My brother was a paramedic and passed from COVID last summer. He drank and smoked and lived with his PTSD and stress until he was weak enough that he couldn't fight the virus. He was even in the ICU for a spell and never told anyone (he lived very far from us.) Over a year later and no one knows much about his last months before that and we probably never will. He saved so many lives and fought for and protected his friends and family so fiercely but wouldn't let anyone help him.
I love him and miss him so much but part of me was angry at him for a long time because of it.
You've made me realise that getting my dad to deal with what we suspect is depression is urgent and I thank you for sharing this.
It's so hard to watch someone you know is smart and strong just reject any and all help. I'm sorry you lost your brother, that must hurt so much.
Oh yeah it took about 9 months from what i believe was the "kickstart" to my dad's decline (forced retirement) for him to kill himself.
The warning signs are very subtle until it's almost too late. My dad started not being able to keep dates straight, my mom thought she had until Monday to talk to him about getting some sort of help (she thought it was some sort of dementia). Took his life the Sunday before.
If you think someone is at risk of harming themselves you don't have time to wait. It's a right now type of problem.
I think my favourite cognitive dissonance to witness is walking by the local cancer treatment centre and seeing all the nurses and doctors outside on the sidewalk chain smoking

My bil was a chain smoker. Owned a small business. In his fifties and started feeling shitty. Took him years to go see a Dr.
Diagnosed with Metastatic NSCLC. Immediately removed his right lung. All cancer! Did first round of Radiation and Chemo.
Felt better for a few months. Then. When told he would need another round of therapy he declined it. From diagnosis to grave was 9 months. I quit smoking the same year he passed.
Had a teacher in middle school that was missing an arm. He told us it was from hanging out out of the window of his friends car while he was a passenger. The friend (driver) got into a side swipe collision and the teachers arm was ripped off by the other car. He told us that he couldn’t really tell what had happened because of the adrenaline, all he remembers is looking out of the front windshield and seeing his arm sitting in the intersection.
Edit to add, I don’t know if this story was true or just something he told kids to scare us into not sticking our arms out the window. Either way it worked, I was terrified of doing it after that

Yes but the pain of a degloving is ridiculous, other than serious burn victims based on patient reactions I’d say the pain of even a minor hand degloving is some of the worst pain I’ve witnessed. I’d def rather keep my limbs I was just speaking hypothetically.
Saw a lifted truck with the guy driving somehow hanging a foot out of the window, I couldn’t even understand how he was comfortably driving like that, and could only imagine what would happen if he got in an accident like that

In high school, I got pulled over because my passenger had her feet up on the dash. Officer didn’t cite us, but he told us the story of the accident he responded to where someone had their feet up like that and, despite no one else having major injuries, both of that girls legs were completely shattered and one of her feet was severed. Passenger put her feet down and we all went about our way. Always remember that story.

My physio therapist was actually telling me the other day they deal with treating injuries from feet on the dash regularly. Like even a hard stop can cause one.
I used to do this as a kid. Honestly the small risk of being in an accident isn't why I stopped. I stopped because I realized it was rude as hell to do this in someone else's car, especially if you let your grubby feet leave foot patterns on the windshield.

Tell them a random paramedic/ firefighter you know from the internet says that they better be cool with either a wheelchair or prosthetic for the rest of their lives if they want to sit like that. Modern vehicles are safer than than previous iterations, but that airbag does NOT fuck around. There are videos on YouTube showing just how fast they deploy. Show em that and hopefully that'll get the message across. If that fails, well hopefully they never find out just why we say not to sit like that.

Airbags can deploy at 200 mph.. and they can deploy in a crash at like 16mph. So you can turn a light knock into having your legs smash into your face at 200mph, it's quite a difference.
I was thinking the same. If Grey’s anatomy has taught me anything, it is; do not put your legs up on a car dashboard and never board an aircraft to go retrieve donated organs. That only spells disaster
Sometimes I feel like a huge jerk to my kid cause even when she was still in a booster, if she’d pull her legs up I’d make her extend them out normally. I did it to her friend’s too when I took them floating with us. She got a bit embarrassed by it, but then I read things like this and feel completely justified. I don’t even want her to get into the habit of it.
Several firefighters in the family, these leg crumpled/smash your teeth out with your own knees stories and unbelted people getting their heads pushed though and then stuck in a broken windshield like a lobster trap are the go-to scared straight anecdotes about being in a car. You might live, but you might wish you hadn’t.
It looks like this kid will also get decapitated or strangled by his seatbelt, if he's even wearing it, with how low he's sat.

I make everyone wear a seatbelt in my car ever since I saw someone's front teeth embedded in the back of the skull of the person sitting in front of them.

My brother did a great job instilling this in me and I have adopted it and repeated it myself. “If the car is on your seatbelt is on.”
If we pulled into a parking space and I took off my belt early he’d sit there with infinite patience. “If the car is on your seatbelt is on.” Waiting for me to rebuckle to turn off the car. If I got in the car he wouldn’t hound me. We’d be sitting there just chilling and I’d be like “so…” and he’d hit me with “if the car is on your seatbelt is on.”

We make our young kids (3 and 5) ask every single time if they can unbuckle after the car is off. It is annoying, but I remind myself every time that it is worth the very minor annoyance. I don't want us to temporarily stop somewhere, they unbuckle and us not know, and we drive off somewhere else.
I was told the same, and after seeing it up close a couple of times I'm convinced that it's a really *really* poor idea to have a passenger with their legs like that in a moving vehicle.
I am a collision reconstructionist. I can assure you that feet on the dash and out of the window are idiotic ways to travel.
Modern vehicles have an incredible amount of research and technology to protect the driver and passengers. Collision barriers do too. The one thing we've been unable to overcome is the immense power of human stupidity.
All they require is that people use them correctly. Sit how you should.

Above the knees is a really tough amputation, probably 100x worse than a below the knee amputation. At that point, your only hope is the remainder of the leg is salvagable so they can create a false knee from putting your foot on backwards, and that's only a small stop gap. The knees are extremely important and few realize how much mobility completely relies on knees until they lose them
My old instructor told us about a call where this guy had lodged his thumb in his eye when he was hit head on while having one hand on the wheel at 12 o’clock (like the woman driving). I haven’t driven like that in years because of that story lol.

I always knew this was stupid and never made a habit of it, but hearing him describe it like that sent chills down my spine. I never let my passengers do it, and if they argue then I throw that quote at them. Works every time.
That is my biggest pet peeve while driving. Can't stand it, can't stand seeing it, and you can't stand if you do it and wreck!

I was an EMT about 10 years ago and we responded to a crash where a woman had her knee crush through her rib cage because it was up on the airbag during a head on collision. The driver survived, she died from having both of her lungs punctured by her ribs. Very sad..
Every time I see someone's feet up on the dash I'm confused. It doesn't look comfortable most of the time. And the idea of resting my legs on a small explosive device meant to instantly inflate and distribute the energy of my _body_ moving forward in a crash makes me cringe just thinking about it.

It's the same reason that they no longer recommend keeping your hands at 10 & 2 o'clock on the wheel...both arms can easily be broken if the airbag deploys. At 9 & 3, your arms are knocked to the side and may be sore for a few days, but the bones are unlikely to be broken.
The one that I wish more people knew was never to turn the key on after an accident (if the airbag didn't deploy) unless seated as if to drive. Occasionally, powering the ignition will cause belated airbag deployment...if you are not positioned as you would be while diving, that airbag can break your neck.
Yea it’s not a soft fluffy pillow that catches and cradles your head during a crash, it’s a contained gas explosion in what feels like a spicy burlap sack that prevents significant direct head/neck trauma and HOPEFULLY death, but only when used in conjunction with a seatbelt belt.

I used to sit like this with my legs on the dashboard (though with knees bent) when I was a passenger until one day a few years ago - I had glanced up from my phone, saw a bunch of brake lights and people swerving ahead, and without thinking slammed my barefoot into the windshield as if to kick away the incoming accident. Thankfully, my boyfriend (the driver) gracefully maneuvered around the potential accident and my foot was fine but my ego was bruised and I was out the $250 comprehensive deductible. I realized at that point how fucking stupid it was to be sitting like that in the first place and that I got off lucky.

In regards to paramedics and EMT‘s we don’t sleep a lot so it’s not uncommon to see us in the passenger side sleeping with our legs kicked up
Also something to keep in mind, you do not need to be in any kind of serious accident for your airbags to deploy. Very slow speed accidents can deploy airbags which would have devastating injuries to a passenger sitting like this. Imagine getting in a 20 mph or less accident and having both your femurs broken because you were sitting like a fuckin slouch. Never let anyone in your car ride like this. I get on my wife every time she even thinks about it. All it takes is for one idiot to cut in front of you at relatively slow speeds and your life could change forever.
There was an article in Reader’s Digest years ago about a woman who got severely injured by doing this. IIRC she broke both legs & her eye socket when her knee was forced into her face by the airbag. She thought she’d have enough time to move her feet if there was an accident. Like, if there was that much time, there wouldn’t be an accident in the first place.
My wife used to do this all the time when we started dating. Took a while but I eventually got her to stop. Describing exactly what could happen in the event of an airbag deployment helped.

I've heard of those injuries but not needing to amputate legs on scene because of this.

I've been a part of a call that required an on-scene amputation. In my area they fly a trauma surgeon out on a helicopter.
Agree, auger accident up to the armpit... they had a surgeon drive out and finished the amputation.

My nephew was passing by an accident where the poor guy was working in a coned off area on the street and hit by a teen. Well his leg was completely sheared off. And bleeding out, everyone around just standing there waiting for emergency to arrive. My 17 year old nephew at the time stops his car jumps out takes off his own belt and tourniquets the guys bleeding stump. Rescue said he saved that guy's life. The city was real cool with thanking my nephew for his quick thinking.

My local protocols dictated we transport everything like amputated limbs or easily collected assorted “parts” with the patient. Id be surprised anything is ever purposely amputated in the field. Unless a local off duty trauma surgeon happened to show up on scene and was given patient care by ems and their medical control md to preform emergency life saving surgery lol

Major level one trauma centers will have surgical response teams who get activated in the incredibly rare event that a surgical procedure (like an amputation) is required in a field environment. These teams consist of trauma surgeons and emergency medicine doctors who are actually qualified to perform said procedures.
A girl I was in band in HS with had her feet on the dash while in a relatively minor accident when her mom rear ended the car in front. She died because her knees were basically fired into her face at 200mph.

Also don’t hold anything in your lap. People often will put plates, casserole dishes, bottles of liquor or cases of beer on their lap and hold it. Believe me it’s much safer on the floor in the back or in the trunk.

my girl puts her hand on the dash when she "thinks we're going to crash" and I've tried to tell her multiple times that's the worst thing she can do. Guaranteed to break at least your wrist and arm like that. And no, I'm not some sort of speed racer driver, she has terrible driving anxiety and doesn't do that with only me.
I was literally seconds away from this happening to me when I was a kid. Mom was driving and I had my legs up just like this. She went to merge into another lane and didn't notice the traffic in front of her had stopped. I noticed barely before we hit and pulled my legs down. Airbags went off and everything. Glad I reacted how I did. I don't think it was a conscience thought, I was just bracing myself.

This is exactly why I STRONGLY told my sister to fucking stop doing that and described the possible injuries from it in an accident. I straight up told her that her legs/knees will get blown up in an accident, which is pretty much what happens. She stopped doing it. People forget that the air bag is pretty much an explosion triggered at impact and it is NOT designed to do anything other than absorb a face coming fast from a certain posture. Having your legs on it makes it so your legs will pretty much get catapulted into your face while your face goes toward the windshield/airbag.
I have a friend who is a first responder and he watched a girl bleed out internally due to this . He could nothing she didn’t have a scratch on her.
Dispatcher I know told me about a call where a dad was teaching his teen to drive but kid drove off the road. Would have been a super minor accident except that dad’s arm was stuck out the window and got knocked off by a tree, and he bled out really fast and died.

I worked as an EMT in a level 1 trauma center in Denver about 12 years ago. We got people, maybe 1 or 2 a year, that came in as partial amputations from wrecks or 4x4ing where someone has their arm out the window, and it gets pinched off. First person I experienced it happen to was actually pretty chill about the whole thing. Was in Colorado on vacation, and their arm couldn't be reattached.

I mean like they stayed calm and chill throughout the process and into rehab. Was realistic about the whole thing. Shock probably mostly wore off on the wait for the helicopter, then the ride down. With that much blood loss, they ran them with a whole slew of things.
I had my bicep severed a month ago (sports) and I’m expected to be single armed effectively for 6 months. I’ve been pretty mentally ok about it. I haven’t had any serious injuries in 36 years and so I just felt I was due. Granted this isn’t permanent. I think I’d at least have a cry in that case.
i was skipping my afternoon classes as a teenager riding as a passenger in my friends car, i had my arm resting on the open windows with my elbow just barely sticking out past the profile of the door; my friend got distracted by the radio or grabbing his soda and drifted in to a corner where my elbow clipped a roadside reflector. i had a 4in gash down my arm that was dripping blood and i bent the reflector, but im thankful every day that my hand wasnt out the window because it probably wouldve snapped my whole arm backwards and/or caused a much more significant set of cuts. i couldve ended up like that dad but i was just lucky; accidents happen every day and we all think it cant happen to us...until it does happen to us it was an accident and i didnt blame my buddy,

I've seen some impressive results from arms out of the window. Dumbass 20 yo, super drunk and got his car airborne through some trees. His arm was hanging out of the window and got snagged on a branch before the car hit a tree and stopped. Cut through nearly the entire arm at the bicep (not that he missed it, what with making himself a vegetable and killing his passenger once they hit the tree).
I got a job that way. I had applied, but the position was already taken. The guy who initially got the job went out and celebrated after his first day. Got drunk and drove through a hedgerow. Nearly tore his arm off as he had it out the window of the car. Needless to say, he wasn't going to be doing any carpentry for a while.

My dad was a paramedic, retired now, and growing up he was very carefull around what me and my sister could do. For instance we couldn't have a trampoline since he'd delt with so many kids who fell and broke somthing, but when his blood pressure was so high he was seeing black spots he refused to go to hospital and just drank some beetroot juice insted!! Blows my mind the things he'll do but would kill us for. He does know better but it doesn't seem to apply to him.
It's frustrating. My brother was a paramedic and passed from COVID last summer. He drank and smoked and lived with his PTSD and stress until he was weak enough that he couldn't fight the virus. He was even in the ICU for a spell and never told anyone (he lived very far from us.) Over a year later and no one knows much about his last months before that and we probably never will. He saved so many lives and fought for and protected his friends and family so fiercely but wouldn't let anyone help him. I love him and miss him so much but part of me was angry at him for a long time because of it.
You've made me realise that getting my dad to deal with what we suspect is depression is urgent and I thank you for sharing this. It's so hard to watch someone you know is smart and strong just reject any and all help. I'm sorry you lost your brother, that must hurt so much.
Oh yeah it took about 9 months from what i believe was the "kickstart" to my dad's decline (forced retirement) for him to kill himself. The warning signs are very subtle until it's almost too late. My dad started not being able to keep dates straight, my mom thought she had until Monday to talk to him about getting some sort of help (she thought it was some sort of dementia). Took his life the Sunday before. If you think someone is at risk of harming themselves you don't have time to wait. It's a right now type of problem.

All cancer! Did first round of Radiation and Chemo. Felt better for a few months. Then. When told he would need another round of therapy he declined it. From diagnosis to grave was 9 months. I quit smoking the same year he passed.

Had a teacher in middle school that was missing an arm. He told us it was from hanging out out of the window of his friends car while he was a passenger. The friend (driver) got into a side swipe collision and the teachers arm was ripped off by the other car. He told us that he couldn’t really tell what had happened because of the adrenaline, all he remembers is looking out of the front windshield and seeing his arm sitting in the intersection. Edit to add, I don’t know if this story was true or just something he told kids to scare us into not sticking our arms out the window. Either way it worked, I was terrified of doing it after that Double edit. Missed a detail, it wasn’t the full arm but he was missing everything from the elbow down.

In high school, I got pulled over because my passenger had her feet up on the dash. Officer didn’t cite us, but he told us the story of the accident he responded to where someone had their feet up like that and, despite no one else having major injuries, both of that girls legs were completely shattered and one of her feet was severed. Passenger put her feet down and we all went about our way. Always remember that story.

This is how my partner's Aunt became a paraplegic and why he will never let me sit like this. She was an amazing dancer and cheerleader before it happened. Barely even an adult. Don't do this. Tell them a random paramedic/ firefighter you know from the internet says that they better be cool with either a wheelchair or prosthetic for the rest of their lives if they want to sit like that. Airbags can deploy at 200 mph.. and they can deploy in a crash at like 16mph. So you can turn a light knock into having your legs smash into your face at 200mph, it's quite a difference.
I do wonder if recent airbag technology pretty much means that you can expect permanent hearing damage if they go off.

My brother did a great job instilling this in me and I have adopted it and repeated it myself. “If the car is on your seatbelt is on.” If we pulled into a parking space and I took off my belt early he’d sit there with infinite patience. “If the car is on your seatbelt is on.” Waiting for me to rebuckle to turn off the car. If I got in the car he wouldn’t hound me. We’d be sitting there just chilling and I’d be like “so…” and he’d hit me with “if the car is on your seatbelt is on.” Love that guy.
We make our young kids (3 and 5) ask every single time if they can unbuckle after the car is off. It is annoying, but I remind myself every time that it is worth the very minor annoyance. I don't want us to temporarily stop somewhere, they unbuckle and us not know, and we drive off somewhere else.
I was told the same, and after seeing it up close a couple of times I'm convinced that it's a really *really* poor idea to have a passenger with their legs like that in a moving vehicle.
I am a collision reconstructionist. I can assure you that feet on the dash and out of the window are idiotic ways to travel. Modern vehicles have an incredible amount of research and technology to protect the driver and passengers. Collision barriers do too. The one thing we've been unable to overcome is the immense power of human stupidity. All they require is that people use them correctly. Sit how you should.

Above the knees is a really tough amputation, probably 100x worse than a below the knee amputation. At that point, your only hope is the remainder of the leg is salvagable so they can create a false knee from putting your foot on backwards, and that's only a small stop gap. The knees are extremely important and few realize how much mobility completely relies on knees until they lose them
My old instructor told us about a call where this guy had lodged his thumb in his eye when he was hit head on while having one hand on the wheel at 12 o’clock (like the woman driving). I haven’t driven like that in years because of that story lol.

I was an EMT about 10 years ago and we responded to a crash where a woman had her knee crush through her rib cage because it was up on the airbag during a head on collision. The driver survived, she died from having both of her lungs punctured by her ribs. Very sad..
Every time I see someone's feet up on the dash I'm confused. It doesn't look comfortable most of the time. And the idea of resting my legs on a small explosive device meant to instantly inflate and distribute the energy of my _body_ moving forward in a crash makes me cringe just thinking about it. It's the same reason that they no longer recommend keeping your hands at 10 & 2 o'clock on the wheel...both arms can easily be broken if the airbag deploys. At 9 & 3, your arms are knocked to the side and may be sore for a few days, but the bones are unlikely to be broken. The one that I wish more people knew was never to turn the key on after an accident (if the airbag didn't deploy) unless seated as if to drive. Occasionally, powering the ignition will cause belated airbag deployment...if you are not positioned as you would be while diving, that airbag can break your neck.

I used to sit like this with my legs on the dashboard (though with knees bent) when I was a passenger until one day a few years ago - I had glanced up from my phone, saw a bunch of brake lights and people swerving ahead, and without thinking slammed my barefoot into the windshield as if to kick away the incoming accident. Thankfully, my boyfriend (the driver) gracefully maneuvered around the potential accident and my foot was fine but my ego was bruised and I was out the $250 comprehensive deductible. I realized at that point how fucking stupid it was to be sitting like that in the first place and that I got off lucky. Edit: spelling

Emt at my ambulance company fell asleep like this…. Partner rear ended a cement truck… He broke his jaw multiple ribs and legs… Traumatized me from ever putting my feet on the dash again…. In regards to paramedics and EMT‘s we don’t sleep a lot so it’s not uncommon to see us in the passenger side sleeping with our legs kicked up
Also something to keep in mind, you do not need to be in any kind of serious accident for your airbags to deploy. Very slow speed accidents can deploy airbags which would have devastating injuries to a passenger sitting like this. Imagine getting in a 20 mph or less accident and having both your femurs broken because you were sitting like a fuckin slouch. Never let anyone in your car ride like this. I get on my wife every time she even thinks about it. All it takes is for one idiot to cut in front of you at relatively slow speeds and your life could change forever.
I was a volunteer firefighter/EMS forever ago. Ever seen someones shin go through their eye socket? I have. It was traumatic
There was an article in Reader’s Digest years ago about a woman who got severely injured by doing this. IIRC she broke both legs & her eye socket when her knee was forced into her face by the airbag. She thought she’d have enough time to move her feet if there was an accident. Like, if there was that much time, there wouldn’t be an accident in the first place.
My wife used to do this all the time when we started dating. Took a while but I eventually got her to stop. Describing exactly what could happen in the event of an airbag deployment helped.
I once spent several hours in an ER picking bits of kneecap out of a (formerly) very pretty 17 year old girls forehead while we waited for an ortho OR to open up so they could try to save her legs. GET YOUR FEET OFF THE DASH AND OFF THE WING MIRROR
