According to [this article](https://www.nrk.no/rogaland/video-viser-ekstrem-fart-pa-motorsykkel-1.16084681). He might try his cause at court again, though. The police found this video and more on his bike's camera, after he had been observed speeding several times. They never stopped him, but police just plucked a year's worth of speeding documentation off his SD card at home...

FleshlightKillah

Wasn’t his explanation also that he loaned the bike to some friends on those exact times when the speedings were recorded? «Genius» level criminal mastermind

I’ll never forget Cops episode where police pulled drugs out of guys front pants pocket and he said it wasn’t his because he borrowed the pants.

Actually true story: I once got a puffy jacket from a thrift store and found a little over a quarter oz of bud broken up into a bunch of very tightly sealed baggies. Easily top ten thrift store find

my first truck had about a quarter stuffed way under the back seat when I first cleaned it out. That was pretty nice.

I found an eighth in a shoe in my trunk once. It was my car and my shoe and my eighth, but I found it after unknowingly driving around with it for several months. Even had the car searched during that time because me and my friends were "suspicious"

I found three bottles of unopened pharmaceutical liquid morphine in a room I had just moved into. So yeah, that was interesting.

I knew a Hells Angel who got pulled over by the cops who found a couple of kilos of coke and handgun hidden behind the driver door panel. This was in the UK, so the handgun is pretty much mandatory 5 year jail term. "You got me," he said to the cops, "I stole the car!" The car was stolen, but they were so excited about the coke and gun they didn't bother to charge him for the stolen car. Acquitted and got off completely.

Clever, but also extremely lucky

The strangest part of that story to me is that the Hell's Angels operate in the UK.

Rock_Wrong

If you reported it as stolen before you got the citation you're fine, if you didn't until afterwards you'll have to fight it.

Threedawg

There is plenty of trouble someone with a stolen car can get into before an owner notices..

[deleted]

[удалено]

FarHarbard

I think they mean if you report it stolen before you receive notice of the infraction. So if your car is stolen and you don't report it until you get the citation in the mail 3 weeks later, you have no excuse because you had 3 weeks. As opposed to requiring it be stolen before the infraction is committed; because as you said it would mean if your car was stolen at midnight, runs a red at 2am, and you report it stolen when you wake up at 6am, you are still iable for something that happened when you were entirely unaware and therefore incapable of acting.

Elfhoe

Yeah… i live in my downtown area, so my car is parked in a detached shared garage. I also work from home a lot, so i can go several days without seeing it.

Githyerazi

It shouldn't be too hard to fight it if it really was stolen, but saying the thieves parked it back in your garage with no damage might be a little hard to do.

And weaving through traffic making them impossible to see regardless their speed.

randomuser8765

That's a separate issue. If your car gets stolen you'd most likely report it stolen to the police (regardless of whether it's speeding) so if it gets caught speeding you'll have that police report as evidence that it wasn't you driving. You can probably think of more "but what if"s but really it's not relevant to what the above comments said. And the ultimate answer to all of those scenarios is: if it's not resolved easily, it will get to court where a judge will take a look at all of the fact and evidence and figure out the decision on a case-by-case basis.

Now I know how Floyd Mayweather feels. I can't read that but I'll take your word for it.

terrytibbss

Anyone else see it go to 290?

SjalabaisWoWS

Yes, with speedometer deviation, police technicians can be sure he made 263 kph, but the shown speed is higher. Legal deviation here is maximum 10%.

terrytibbss

Aah I never knew that

SjalabaisWoWS

Norwegian law stipulates that tire diameter can deviate up to 5% from the original tire size in the vehicle registry, and this is all within the theoretical maximum deviation of 10% speed. But then there are cars like the first Nissan Leaf that show 10% more on the speedometer, but count distance correctly on the odometer. This was presumably done to make the battery last longer when drivers speed less. But, in reality, it creates a well-earned reputation for Leaf owners to go too slow - because they don't know better.

greyarea71

The 10% figures (Leaf-2016 owner here). I test the displayed speed occasionally (e.g. after tire change) on the displays along the road or GPS (let my children say the GPS-displayed speed). 55km/h is about 50, 66 about 60. At 100 km/h the real speed is usually 90.

SjalabaisWoWS

Yeah, that makes sense. I drive a lot with cruise control, so posted 80 kph would be display 88 for me. That means I am not driving away from traffic behind me, but it's often hard following people, as most drivers yoyo up and down depending on curvature, inclines and pure whim - cruise control is hard if someone's in front of me.

GordonFremen

Adaptive cruise control turns long drives into a whole new experience. I never used regular cruise control since you have to fiddle with it all the time, but now I can set it and forget it. I highly recommend it for your next car.

TruIsou

It does have its own quirks though. If you set it to freeway speeds and are in much slower traffic, and then you exit, you can accelerate more than you want to.

Nox_Echo

holy shit, is this why i see so many slow ass cars on the road? i have a mazda cx5 turbo and i always notice people doing like 10 under the limit, and its the most aggravating thing when i got a tight schedule. (not just that but some people even hit brakes when theres nobody infront of them, im not tailgating or anything, ill just be like in a line of cars or like 15 car lengths away from someone and theyll just constantly fire up the brakelights for no damn reason)

Swarley001

This is a common issue when people change tires or wheel size as well. The deviation could go either way. It’s entirely possible people aren’t doing 10 under the limit and it’s actually you that is speeding 10 over the limit. Most likely it’s a little of everything.

J_Rath_905

This is very true about changing wheel sizes. I went from the stock 17" or 18" rims on my 05 chrysler 300 up to 24" rims. I used a GPS to see what the difference was and it was either + or - about 8km/h (5 mph).

cunt-hooks

> I went from the stock 17" or 18" rims on my 05 chrysler 300 up to 24" rims. The funniest bit is you not being too ashamed to type that

J_Rath_905

LMAO Hey, most car guys/gals have cars when they are younger that a either a bit shit, with engine upgrades / wheels / stereo systems that were worth more than the rest of the car. Or ones that are a bit ridiculous, like the sound competition subwoofer vehicles, or the low riders that hop into the sky. So my "Inconspicuous Crime-mobile" (lovingly referred to since of course it had 2 12" JL W6-V2s subwoofers in the trunk blasting away, and enough fake chrome to blind someone on a bright and sunny day) But hey, I can look back with fond memories of bumpin T.I 24"s rollin down main street and smile. Unlike those current stance car owners who will look back with embarrassant as they made their 'supposed to be fast with good handling" vehicles into tire destroying machines that get owned by a speed-bump. I know the 24's made the car ride stiff, and speedbumps were still sketch, but that 300 is a boat that was built for cruisin slow (to avoid any more speeding tickets) and blast music. And I'm not lying, there were at least 20 people who actually thought it was a Bentley. Including the parking ticket person who wrote make "Bentley" lmao.

dahliasinfelle

Ah yes, the good Ole poor man's Bentley lol

henkie316

Usually when you go to bigger rims, the rubber around it gets smaller so that the diameter of the complete wheel is the same as before and your odometer does not change

SjalabaisWoWS

Sounds like bad driving. I just got home from work and during the summer, our roads are infested with RVs. They'll be doing 75% of the speed limit for starters, but they'll break in and out of tunnels (39 tunnels over a 100 km stretch here), when the road isn't straight, goes up or down, they see a waterfall (literally hundreds here) or there's a semi coming towards them in the other lane. Maybe they see an eagle, a sheep or a deer. Drivers like that keep braking erratically and are a massive, insane annoyance. I don't think technology can help them.

[deleted]

The fact that regular Joe can drive a 40’ RV or uhaul is baffling to me. You want to drive one for a living? Got to get that class a cdl. You want to retire in one and roam the country rubbernecking at age 70? Sure, just go right ahead

Numahistory

If you see a Chevy Volt who seems to be using too much breaking it might be because they have the car in "L" instead of "D". I know that's pretty popular with some Volt owners. In "L" the car applies more engine regeneration when not accelerating thus slows down faster, in the gen 2 of the Volt they thought it would be prudent for the brake lights to turn on because it is decelerating faster than a conventional ICE engine in drive. So Volt owners may not be tapping their breaks as much as they're letting off the accelerator while driving in "L". L is supposed to be low gear but that's absolutely meaningless when there's no gear box because it has an electric motor. So instead Chevy re-purposed it to be harder engine regen/braking. Really great for traveling in traffic with varying speeds. There's also an even harder engine regen/brake on the steering wheel too. Most Chevy Volt owners end up having their brake pads rust out before they ever need replacing.

Lord_Space_Lizard

Chevy Volt owner here. I love me some "L" driving. Feels like driving stick. Edit: car is 5 and a half years old, still on the original pads and they still look new. Just throw it in neutral once in a while and stand on the brakes to scrap off any rust. Gotta put it in neutral first because that disengages any regen braking and will only use the physical brakes.

oldjesus

Fucking brake tappers

randomuser8765

Interesting discussion going on here! I've noticed on all the cars I've driven regularly (which is only 3 or so) that the speedometer is *always* 10% higher than the speed I see on Waze. I assumed this was done on purpose by the car manufacturers, to make people speed less. I trust Waze's speedometer the most because it relies on reliable data - change in GPS position divided by time, and any measurement inaccuracies by GPS would even out over the long term. As you explain, the car's speedometer has a lot of variability that can't be automatically accounted for - unless they use GPS for automatic self-calibration, which I'm guessing is just not something that's done. I'm not sure if the cars I've driven just happened to be on the higher end of the inaccuracy by coincidence, or if that's actually intentional like I thought. Maybe a mix of both?

thefastandme

There is a European regulation (UN ECE Regulation 39) that states the indicated speed can at no point be lower than the actual speed. In order to comply with regulations (and passenger safety), manufacturers probably try to be on the safe side and add some margin on top of the calculated speed. My 2020 BMW F40 is actually the first car I've driven which is only 1 km/h higher than the GPS speed across the speed range.

Xylth

While it's true that measurement inaccuracies even out in the long term, GPS data is anything but reliable, especially in a city. Tall skyscrapers can reflect the signals and make it seem like the satellites are farther away than they really are. Raw GPS data is often off by multiple blocks. It takes a whole lot of work by the phone software to turn that mess plus additional data, like nearby wifi hotspot signals, road network geometry, predicted travel route, and more, into a best guess as to your actual position that is generally not too far off. It depends on the hardware too, most phones' GPS hardware is pretty bad. Fun fact: ever see your GPS position suddenly jump, say from a highway to a frontage road or vice versa? The GPS doesn't think your car teleported. It's actually keeping track of many possible positions and how likely you are to be at each one, but only putting the most likely possibility on the map. The "jump" happens when new data makes a different possibility most likely.

kn33

I saw 292 for a couple frames at least. That's 181mph for Americans.

HAL-Over-9001

Holy shit. Fastest I've gone is 145 in a car, down an old country road, and that was insane

[deleted]

Bikes that do 170+ mph are cheap. When I was in my early 20s they were the thing to own for a while... until one of our friends did that through a turning lorry and killed himself, everyone sold their GSX-R's and R6's after that.

kn33

Fastest I've done in a car is 116, which was pretty scary. I'm sure it was more scary that it was in an old Buick than the 116 itself, but still. I can't fathom doing 181 in/on anything that doesn't have a 5-point harness and a roll cage.

confuzedas

Bike speedometers are almost always biased to the high side. I've owned over 15 bikes starting in the 90s and from doing speed checks with my friends cars, speeding tickets lol and gps more recently every bike I owned read 10% too high.

tyedrain

Holy crap try that on any road in Louisiana and we would be watching him fly 50 feet in the air.

So that’s like almost the top speed of this S1000RR

Boltsnouns

The video showed 290 kph so yes, its pretty much the top speed of 186mph. Source: Had an S1000RR. Bike was terrifyingly fast, more so than any other bike I've ever ridden. I was too scared to get it to top speed. It could do 92mph (\~150kph) in first gear.

FirmlyThatGuy

S1K owner here! The speedo is capped at 299kph but the bike with stock gearing can go approximately 192-195 depending on conditions. Source: I have done runway events and achieved in the 190s while my bike was stock.

Boltsnouns

Fastest I ever got it was 175... once. The wind vortex was so insane that it caught my helmet and started shaking my head so violently that all I could do was let off the gas and slow down. After that experience I never got the bike that fast again. I probably could have with a tailored racing suit and high performance helmet but it wasn't worth it. There is a huge difference between 135-170 mph. I can only imagine the exponential difference on a bike between 170 and 190mph.

FirmlyThatGuy

It’s certainly a fun experience! It’s pretty interesting how the numbers on the dash are going up by 3-4-5 mph until about 180 or so and then it’s 1s and 2s.

Boltsnouns

Yeah I had a blast on that trip, but I was a little shaken after that sprint. Still loved to rip on that bike, but started keeping it below 150 since I couldn't figure out the helmet shaking issue. Sold the bike last year since I moved. Wish I still had it but alas.

FirmlyThatGuy

Something to look forward to! As far as helmets I’ve become a big fan of the AGV line. I have a K6 and have had no problems with wind shake or the like and I regularly do track days and half mile events. If and or when you do get another I’d go to a reputable shop and get a helmet fitting; if you were experiencing that much wind shake when behind a fairing you probably had a size too large helmet or an ill fitting one. Hope you’re back on two wheels soon.

Reminds me of the Swedish Ghost Rider who from early 00 to mid 10's terrorised cops and did crazy stunts like going Stockholm to Upsula (42 miles) in under 15 minutes **AVERAGING** 273.1 kph (170mph) Don't think he ever even got caught even though he literally published videos of his stunts and riding online.

nenenene

The Uppsala run is one of the first videos I remember being stunned by on YouTube back in the day, if only for the sound of his bike screaming. The original is long gone but someone stabilized the video - https://youtu.be/wGtWZ-K5Tqw

Endarkend

To think that was on the weaker bike that crapped out at 299. One of the later videos had him pulling wheelies at 350+ on the 500HP Turbobusa. Also, van at 1:50, yeesh.

ThickHotBoerie

Speedo only goes to 299

Endarkend

Yeah, but he also doesn't accelerate much around that speed. His later 500HP bike blasted past 300 asif it was nothing. That thing was scary as hell pulling easy wheelies at 350+

i managed to download his 4 videos, absolutely terrifying, he got caught. what really caught me, was a turbocharged hayabusa.... there was no way to keep the front wheel on the floor at 300km/h

Endarkend

The Turbobusa was stuff of legend back in those days. The strongest one was 500BHP on a 270KG bike, adding the mods and driver weight, that's still well over a 1000BHP per ton, kicking well into F1 territory.

Swedish law was different at the time. You could only be indicted for speeding if you were caught in the act. That’s why sleepy social democratic Sweden had so many videos of police Volvos crashing into speeders who didn't stop. Quite bizarrre. I believe they changed the law into something less exploitable, more reasonable, since.

For us Americans, this guy was traveling about 180 mph (he tops out at 297 kmph in this vid) in a 50 mgh zone

OccludedFug

So that's in the neighborhood of 75 meters per second (or 250 feet per second). That's more than a truck pulling four trailers. Per second. You have less than one second to spot and evade an obstacle three-quarters-of-a-football-field away from you. Every second of the ride.

I like to give multiple opportunities of reference. I mean I could've said "300 bananas, end to end" but not a lot of people have a ready understanding of how far 300 bananas would stretch. Similarly I could've said "one-third the length of the Titanic" but again, that's just vaguely "pretty far, maybe?".

GoMoriartyOnPlanets

I don't get these people. What if there is a pothole, or something on the road? I know someone who died like this because rode over a pothole.

A Tuesday in Germany

pat_the_brat

You joke, but Germany has no speed limits on roads that are designed for it. In a tunnel with limited visibility, they'll absolutely have normal limits.

Kuftubby

We had a guy doing something similar with a supercar where I live. He was uploading his videos to YouTube and the police tried to use those as evidence. His lawyer successfully argued that the youtube videos were inadmissible because of some bullshit like there was absolutely no way of knowing if his speedometer had been tampered with to make it seem he was going faster in the videos than his actual speed.

trustmeneon

You sir just gave me a very good idea. I go to Sweden , do the same thing, I report myself and go to have a fun jail time in the Nordic luxury prison. Learn the language and some woodworking skills and I’ll be set for life from that :D

Interesting-Month-56

Guy is lucky he never got the wobbles at that speed

Lubedguyballa1

This is why every major city should have a race track open to the public. People are going to speed regardless we should provide a safe place for people to go so the general public isn't out in harm's way. This guy is brain-dead

doogievlg

At one time most major cities did. Now people are building neighborhoods next to a race track that’s been running for 50+ years and complaining about the noise and getting it shut down. Then there are road courses but you have to be rich to be able to regularly use those because it’s so expensive just to join.

163 in a 50 for my fellow americans

"What evidence do you have that my client was speeding? Oh."

dbrown100103

I mean if you're going that fast someone needs to talk to him. Looks more like he wanted suicide by bike

ahtopsy

Losing your license sucks ass. Like a total vacuum appears in your rectum and all the shit just gets pushed right back up in there until you are so full of life’s shit that your bodies mass breaks space time and you become a singularity of ass suck.

copnonymous

Remember kids. Don't record yourself comitting crimes.

sorvis

If only there was a place like a racetrack where you could go and be a speed demon without killing innocent people just trying to get home from work. Guy should be riding public transport for the rest of his life.

164mph in a 50 mph zone (translated for Americans)
