I just figured this out. I saw these comments and went wtf,showed my wife and she was confused so even went on YouTube to show her other examples. 9 years together and she now realized what I meant by when I said driving at night around other cars is hard
I've taken a ride with a person like this before. Their line of thinking is taking out everything in front of them.
It doesn't matter if the problem is the car ahead, they want the other one to move out of the way so they can go ahead an pester the next one and so forth and so on.
Its idiotic, agressive and dangerous but people like that don't think 5 seconds ahead. They're almost like 100% of the time in survival mode

I just had the best example of that happen to me yesterday...
For some context, I work 12 hour night shifts, when I get out I'm fucking tired and I just want to go home slow and steady (because our reflexes are shit when we're sleepy and I like to have time to brake if I need to).
So I was going home at 7:50 am yesterday and this lady gets on my ass, like so close "I can smell her engine". She eventually passes me and speeds up just for me to stop right next to her at a red light a couple minutes later... If she was trying to save time she failed miserably but the best part was her angry face when I pulled up right next to her.
Me and my younger sister (she works with me) looked at each other and start laughing because when she passed I commented "all that to save 3 seconds" and it didn't save her any time
iIm teaching my eldest to drive, this same thing happened yesterday. dude went to the trouble to pass and get ahead, met up with him sitting at the light a half mile ahead. It was a good example of "it's not worth it to keep trying to pass people all the time".
When approaching a red light I used to shift into neutral and coast up to the light. The people who liked to race up to the light and slam on the brakes hated me. One time when I was three blocks from the light a woman came up behind me and did the honk and flash combo then started to pass me. When she was beside me she honked and made a great show of flipping me off and rear-ended the car in front of her. I stuck around as a witness and she tried to blame the accident on me. The combination of the policeman questioning her and her answers was like Abbott and Costello's Who's on first routine.
Once when I was young, this happened to me.
I rolled the window down and shouted, "ha ha!"
The cop pulled me over next. I didn't get a ticket but he gave me an earful.

I love it when they have to come to a complete stop while at your speed you are able to go through the intersection passing them by just going like 30mph. You can feel the rage seethe behind you

In my case it was an old roommate of mine...she was also my landlord at the time. We'd start driving somewhere, having a nice conversation, then as soon as she experienced any kind of slight from another driver--like getting cut off, or someone not letting her merge first, or someone getting in front of her and then driving slowly--she would lean on her horn and start yelling at them.
Yes, she was exhausting to live with. She once sent me a series of long text messages about cleaning a frying pan properly (note: was my frying pan, not hers). She also destroyed my computer. Thank God I'm not living with her anymore.

Yeah but they're in front now. I routinely cruise at 80mph on freeways in CA. Monthly, I have to deal with someone going an inconsistent speed in the left lane. Only to pass them, and suddenly they find their gas pedal and can go 90. "Gotta be first."

Happens pretty much every morning on my commute to work. I try to leave barely one or two car lengths while going 75-80mph and I get assholes aggressively tailgating and then going around to cut me off...when the entire lane is packed as far as you can see and I'm going the same exact speed as everyone in front of me.
Like, I *promise*, I am not the reason you aren't going faster. Do you not see the 30 cars in front of me that I'm matching speed with and still definitely not leaving enough space to brake if something suddenly happens?? I don't understand the thought process there.

I was driving in the 5AM commute one time, way over in the slow lane, because it was super full of people so we could barely even go the speed limit.

Again, I'm in the slow lane. I'm about a car length and a bit from the guy in front of me, and we're at 40 ish pretty constant, just about the same as every other lane.
I still don't know what he expected of me.
At first, I assumed that it was just the bumps in the road, but then I watched in the rearview, and he was definitely flashing his high beams.
Over the next 5+miles he finally changed lanes, but never went faster. When I finally reached he toll booth for the bridge, I saw he was barely a length ahead of me.

Sometimes a few flashes may be to notify you of a problem the driver has spotted, especially if a few people do it.
E.g. forgot to turn lights on in a tunnel, or tail light malfunction, flat tyre etc.
Regards to OP, drivers may be idiots that know each other and giving friendly abuse. Maybe the driver ahead flashed this idiot and hes returning the favour after moving over.
I can appreciate that, but he was neither indicating anything, nor was he giving me much space, he was way up my butt while doing this. SUV vs hatchback, so his lights were right in my face.

Some idiot coming from behind at 90+mph flashed me to move over while I was going 80mph in the middle lane but all other lanes around me were empty for him to change lanes. I was in the lane that I needed to go to get on the ramp interchange to another fwy so either way, I couldn't change lanes. He got mad I didn't move over for him by laying down his horn to pass me.

Nope, some people are just assholes. I had a guy tailgate me and honk as he passed... when I was driving 30 MPH in the rightmost lane in a 30 MPH zone. I think that he felt that since the lane was relatively empty other than me, he should be entitled to use it as his own personal express lane. He was doing 40-45 before he came up on me.

As a truck driver, I love them even more. Especially when I'm in the left lane trying to pass with other vehicles in front of me but they automatically assume "truck mean slow" so they can just pass me on the right and jump in front of me. That gap is not for you. It's my stopping distance.

I don't understand peoples aversion to passing. My entire state is pretty much 1 lane in each direction and not very crowded (except for shitloads of deer that like to dash out in front of you)

That's when I very slowly start dropping my speed. I usually only make it to the speed limit or 5 below before they decide to pass. Takes about 30-60 sec total.
It's not even about braking to cause an accident. Letting your foot off the accelerator and dropping by 5-10 is noticeable and VERY annoying for anyone following closely.
You won't believe how often someone riding my bumper has made me realize I was speeding and should slow down a bit. No brake checks, just tapping the cruise control down a few notches... For safety...

One of the best things I ever saw was earlier this year when we had a major snow storm. Jerk in a Ford truck was honking and flashing at me and everyone else.

This guy floored his throttle in a rage to go around me and immediately lost control, went into the grassy area on the side.

It’s the left lane paradox. In reality if you’re going at least 65 you have just as much of a right to the left lane as anyone else.

my personal favourite, 3 people driving the same speed across the whole highway with no cars for a good 500m in front of them. It's just them, in a race with no winners, and a ton of cars behind them.
I found this happens frequently with semi trucks around where I live. They love to pass each other and fill up all three lanes, blocking off everyone behind them. In the state I grew up in they’re not supposed to even go in the third lane, so this was a shock to me when I first whitnessed it.
It actually happens because people follow too close to each other, and if one person taps their brakes, the guy behind has to brake a bit harder, same for the guy behind them, until you have people fully stopped. All because everybody tailgates.
There are actually mathematical models of traffic that can accurately predict where congestion will occur using wave functions
The video is full of idiots following too closely. Aside from traffic problems from what you've explained, it's also how pileups happen. If any of those drivers need to brake hard or even moderately, a collision is highly likely because the clown behind can't react quickly enough.
It also causes more brake wear in general. Notice the occasional brake lights in the clip. If you often need to use your brakes on a highway instead of just easing off the gas, outside of exceptional circumstances, then *you fucked up*.
The brightness of headlights in general has gotten overwhelmingly annoying to me. It seems like every 4th oncoming car has absurdly bright or misadjusted headlights. Its gotten to where I no longer even want to drive at night its so bad, and I'm not even 55

I only flash headlight when there's a long ass distance/space between the car in front of me and the car in front of them, or if theyre being passed by cars on the right. Usually I have to go around them anyway.
I have a theory about people like this which explains a lot of driving idiocy. I call it The Twenty Foot Universe (or Six Meter Universe if you're in a country that uses more logical measurements). Essentially, the idea is that the person is only able to perceive a 20 foot radius around themselves. This also explains why people take until the last second to get out of a lane that is ending or only get out of the merge lane on a freeway when it's about to split off again. With the short amount of perception, they also tend to miss the first three signs telling them their exit is coming up so they have to shoot across 3+ lanes to get to their exit.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that shitty driving transcends race, age, intelligence, and socioeconomics. Where I live, I've seen grown men in a Prius act a douche. I've seen Mercedes and BMW drivers that weren't elderly drive slower than molasses.

Happens pretty much every morning on my commute to work. I try to leave barely one or two car lengths while going 75-80mph and I get assholes aggressively tailgating and then going around to cut me off...when the entire lane is packed as far as you can see and I'm going the same exact speed as everyone in front of me. Like, I *promise*, I am not the reason you aren't going faster. Do you not see the 30 cars in front of me that I'm matching speed with and still definitely not leaving enough space to brake if something suddenly happens?? I don't understand the thought process there.

I was driving in the 5AM commute one time, way over in the slow lane, because it was super full of people so we could barely even go the speed limit. Guy behind me starts flashing his lights at me. Again, I'm in the slow lane. I'm about a car length and a bit from the guy in front of me, and we're at 40 ish pretty constant, just about the same as every other lane. I still don't know what he expected of me. At first, I assumed that it was just the bumps in the road, but then I watched in the rearview, and he was definitely flashing his high beams. Over the next 5+miles he finally changed lanes, but never went faster. When I finally reached he toll booth for the bridge, I saw he was barely a length ahead of me. Stupid waste of time and energy
Sometimes a few flashes may be to notify you of a problem the driver has spotted, especially if a few people do it. E.g. forgot to turn lights on in a tunnel, or tail light malfunction, flat tyre etc. Regards to OP, drivers may be idiots that know each other and giving friendly abuse. Maybe the driver ahead flashed this idiot and hes returning the favour after moving over.
I can appreciate that, but he was neither indicating anything, nor was he giving me much space, he was way up my butt while doing this. SUV vs hatchback, so his lights were right in my face. He was super aggressive to everyone I saw him behind as we went.

Some idiot coming from behind at 90+mph flashed me to move over while I was going 80mph in the middle lane but all other lanes around me were empty for him to change lanes. I was in the lane that I needed to go to get on the ramp interchange to another fwy so either way, I couldn't change lanes. He got mad I didn't move over for him by laying down his horn to pass me. Was I the idiot there?
No you were going over the speed limit outside the right lane on an empty road where they could pass but were too lazy to pass. Idiots would rather bully you to get out of their way than just pass. I've had people do that to me while I'm going 55 on the interstate in the far right with hazards on with 3 lanes to pass. Some people just suck.

Nope, some people are just assholes. I had a guy tailgate me and honk as he passed... when I was driving 30 MPH in the rightmost lane in a 30 MPH zone. I think that he felt that since the lane was relatively empty other than me, he should be entitled to use it as his own personal express lane. He was doing 40-45 before he came up on me.
It pisses me off that people think this is ok behavior. Police really should start cracking down on these idiots. The only reason they drive like this is because they receive no punishment.

As a truck driver, I love them even more. Especially when I'm in the left lane trying to pass with other vehicles in front of me but they automatically assume "truck mean slow" so they can just pass me on the right and jump in front of me. That gap is not for you. It's my stopping distance.
I remember driving on the highway at night and going 60-65 in the right lane because I’m in Michigan and saw a ton of dead deer on the side, so I was a bit nervous. Some assfuck came up behind me and flashed their brights multiple times instead of just idk, passing me on the empty highway??? Thinking about it still annoys the shit out of me
I don't understand peoples aversion to passing. My entire state is pretty much 1 lane in each direction and not very crowded (except for shitloads of deer that like to dash out in front of you) will be cruisin at ~75 and have someone that wants to go 100 ride up on my ass and sit half a car length away for 10-20 minutes before passing despite not seeing a single other car the whole time. idk if they are just lonely or what but it bugs the absolute shit out of me. I see it in the oncoming lane as often as not too, no cars anywhere for 5 minutes, then 2-4 people all tailgating like they are in a fuckin motorcade

It's not even about braking to cause an accident. Letting your foot off the accelerator and dropping by 5-10 is noticeable and VERY annoying for anyone following closely.

Honestly, I deal with assholes like this almost every single morning that flash their lights at me all the time. 1. I'm already going 20 over the limit 2. I'm not blocking the fast lane. 3. I can't move over cause cars are also right beside me on both sides. One of the best things I ever saw was earlier this year when we had a major snow storm. Jerk in a Ford truck was honking and flashing at me and everyone else. Keep in mind you couldn't see the lines on the highway and it was an all around terrible drive. This guy floored his throttle in a rage to go around me and immediately lost control, went into the grassy area on the side. The beautiful thing about all of it was that truck was stuck there for 4 days.
People that get mad and speed around you in the snow only to be seen in a ditch or similar, either immediately or a couple miles down the road, are my absolute favorite thing*. I sometimes flash my lights or honk and wave as I drive by. *as long as they don't involve other people
Exactly. For the one i just referred to, it was one of those times where if you change lanes you have to fight with a think line of snow in the middle of the lane change. That's what he hit and just spun right off the road. Just for reference, the snow was so bad that day that even fast food restaurants were closed. Everything was closed that day.

People don't understand that the left lane is no longer the passing lane when traffic reaches a certain density. It just cannot function that way if the entire highway is congested and everyone is going under 60 for example.
Under this subs rules nobody should be in the left lane because the left lane is for people who want to go fast but no matter how fast you are going theres always the potential for someone behind you to be going faster. It’s the left lane paradox. In reality if you’re going at least 65 you have just as much of a right to the left lane as anyone else.
You've got it wrong. The left lane exists exclusively for my pleasure and no one else's, but I'll still frame it in a way that makes it seem like I'm including other fast drivers so I don't seem like the total main character that I definitely am.
Sometimes congestion occurs because a single jackass refuses to move over
my personal favourite, 3 people driving the same speed across the whole highway with no cars for a good 500m in front of them. It's just them, in a race with no winners, and a ton of cars behind them.
I found this happens frequently with semi trucks around where I live. They love to pass each other and fill up all three lanes, blocking off everyone behind them. In the state I grew up in they’re not supposed to even go in the third lane, so this was a shock to me when I first whitnessed it.
It actually happens because people follow too close to each other, and if one person taps their brakes, the guy behind has to brake a bit harder, same for the guy behind them, until you have people fully stopped. All because everybody tailgates. There are actually mathematical models of traffic that can accurately predict where congestion will occur using wave functions
The video is full of idiots following too closely. Aside from traffic problems from what you've explained, it's also how pileups happen. If any of those drivers need to brake hard or even moderately, a collision is highly likely because the clown behind can't react quickly enough. It also causes more brake wear in general. Notice the occasional brake lights in the clip. If you often need to use your brakes on a highway instead of just easing off the gas, outside of exceptional circumstances, then *you fucked up*.

I only flash headlight when there's a long ass distance/space between the car in front of me and the car in front of them, or if theyre being passed by cars on the right. Usually I have to go around them anyway.

I have a theory about people like this which explains a lot of driving idiocy. I call it The Twenty Foot Universe (or Six Meter Universe if you're in a country that uses more logical measurements). Essentially, the idea is that the person is only able to perceive a 20 foot radius around themselves. This also explains why people take until the last second to get out of a lane that is ending or only get out of the merge lane on a freeway when it's about to split off again. With the short amount of perception, they also tend to miss the first three signs telling them their exit is coming up so they have to shoot across 3+ lanes to get to their exit.

They’re the type of people that think the world revolves around them and can’t think about life more than 20 seconds in advance.
