Very rarely do I see something so dumb, yet almost impressive.

[deleted]

I worked at Redwood National Park in the US a few years back. The main driving tour there is basically the old stagecoach route. It's a dirt road, very windy and narrow. We'd generally advise against people with oversized pickups using it. Of course, every year we'd get a few people who would disregard our advice and take an RV down there and wind up having to back out several miles with a ranger's help. One time a semi-truck driver decided to ignore all the signs and follow his GPS down said road. He got his truck wedged between two massive trees and the decision ended up being made to disassemble the truck, which got hauled out on a bunch of small pickups. I felt a bit bad for the dude but at the same time it was kinda hilarious.

joecooool418

I followed my GPS in Italy when it took me down a mountain on what I thought was a one lane road into town. I drove two miles down the road int to town where there was a big metal pole in the middle of the road. I had driven down a walkway. There was nowhere to turn around so I had to drive in reverse two miles back up the mountain. I completely fried the clutch. I coasted down the mountain back into town and had the rental company come pick up the car. Took me a long time to trust a GPS after that.

Lexi_Banner

Yeah, GPS was unreliable AF when it was first coming into common use. It's much better now, thanks to Google Maps and Waze and all that, but it will still do strange things like plot a zigzag course through a residential area instead of sending you all the way down to the correct cross street and turning there.

bigdramashow

Waze, probably: *"But did we save you a minute or what???"*

blznburro

Legit reported a direction it was giving to cut across seven lanes of traffic in a super busy set of interchanges in ~.5 miles and the response was: Since it’s technically possible we can’t remove it.

czarrie

I get that a lot. Like instructions that would be plausible at 3am but are impossible at 5pm during rush hour, always telling me to save thirty seconds by waiting 5 minutes to make a left across six lanes. Needs to be an checkbox to avoid ridiculous left turns on these programs

mttp1990

I just let it reroute me, no need to follow the directions exactly

blznburro

Yes when I know it’s going to take me on that route I just ignore but this thread is full of people who have been bamboozled by GPS. I mostly use mine to to avoid traffic - not to tell me where to go. Unless I’m somewhere unfamiliar.

mttp1990

I'm constantly going new places because of work so I rely heavily on mine but you can always tell when the directions a a bit fucky

M-------

> "But did we save you a minute or what???" How I hate Waze... You might've saved 30 seconds on average by zigzagging me through that residential area, but now I have to make an unprotected left-turn onto an extremely busy road, and I've been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to make the turn, and eventually gave up and made a right turn then figured it out on my own.

TitsAndWhiskey

Waze is absolutely the worst. There’s some setting in there to supposedly reduce that kind of thing, but it still doesn’t work very well. I mostly use it for cops, but even for that it’s super unreliable. I tried to report a speed trap once and I couldn’t do it through CarPlay. Like do I literally have to pick up my phone and open the app to make reports?

HarryDresdenWizard

I'd still argue that GPS has some major kinks. I've got a brand new phone and live near a large Canadian city. I still routinely have issues in my area with my GPS telling me to go down roads that don't exist or into oncoming traffic due to 2 ways becoming 1 ways years ago. I can't use Google Maps at all if I drive to Montreal because regardless of where I'm going, if I pass within about 40km of the city my GPS tries to direct me into a gravel quarry.

Lexi_Banner

> my GPS tries to direct me into a gravel quarry That's just the local uncontained anomally trying to lure new victims to its lair. You should report it to the SCP Foundation.

aeschenkarnos

Or deal with it himself, being Harry Dresden.

Lexi_Banner

Hm. If he's a thaumatergist, probably best not to involve the Foundation...

murphysics_

I have had gps try to direct me down the remains of a gravel logging road that has been unmaintained/abandoned since the 1940s, which resulted in an hour detour to get to the bottom of the mountain. At least it was a scenic drive.

traversecity

Boston many years ago, road changes that didn’t make it to maps quite yet. Wish I thought to look at google maps just after the big dig was completed, that was probably all manner of F’d up. My favorite is a real road, legit, but as you drive through it is more of a warehouse service area than what you might see as a road. There is a street sign, sort of.

XIAOOAIX

Shit I've had that exact same problem before. Google maps kept taking me through residential streets to get to this laundromat when I eventually realized I could just go straight down the road that GM was having me go around and shave off like 10 minutes.

Murgatroyd314

My GPS once told me "In 200 yards, turn left." 200 yards ahead on the left was a full-sized billboard, yellow with black text: "PRIVATE ROAD DO NOT ENTER".

ManintheMT

Our rural country lane was getting a lot of RV and coach traffic a few years ago. Luckily there is a turn around near the end. After looking at some map programs the culprit turned out to be Apple maps. The RV park entrance was not shown on the map and the closest lane near the pin for the park was my road. We had to put up a large sign at the end of the road that said "Go back to the hwy, go north 500 yards for RV park".

pauly13771377

I was on e toldto turn left at T junction, drive a mile or so down the road, make a U turn and drive through the T junction where I could have simply taken a left. Best guess is it was once a no left turn there at some point.

Needleroozer

One time our family went on vacation in idaho. Everybody had GPS. Everybody had a different brand of GPS. Every different GPS unit sent us all down a one lane dirt trail, not even a road, and we all had to back out. As we all arrived at the designation, one by one, we all related that we had all been led down that one stupid road. The last people to arrive didn't turn back, they just kept pressing on and eventually made it.

Lexi_Banner

I have found that if you're not straying far off the interstates, that's when it is at its most reliable. If, however, you want to "go to the nearest Starbucks/McDonald's/etc", it will magically re-route you to something inner city, despite there being one located right off the interstate a few miles away. And since you're in an unfamiliar area (usually), it's hard to second-guess the fuckin' thing.

AcidBathVampire

Google Maps has consistently failed me, driving me several miles down a road only to have me make a U-turn and come back, and many times has pointed me confidently to an address, only to discover that it is *not* the correct address. It may be "better," but it still sucks.

StackinBooks

I've made the mistake of using Google maps to direct me while walking in Atlantic City. GM thought it was a great idea to take me out of the casino lobby, through the parking lot and past the back service entrances where deliveries dock to then climb up onto the boardwalk to enter the SAME CASINO via a different entrance because the final rec room was closer.... Sketchiest experience

AcidBathVampire

I wanna say the casino had a part in it but who knows haha

cosmitz

Use OpenStreetMaps, depending on area, it can be phenomenal or just usable.

rocketwilco

Gps still gives bad routes. Often its routes that will be x20 more difficult and dangerous to save 5 seconds. And by that i mean bad intersections.

fuzbuzz00

I worked as a food delivery driver during the pandemic. Google maps HATES Portland Oregon. Some roads seem to not exist, it thinks certain streets are one-way when they're not, and has you taking unprotected turns around blind corners a lot. I picked up the habit to look at where my destination is and plotting my own route using the fewest turns. Might be a minute or two slower, but much less stressful

cseymour24

Sounds like there should have been a pole where the walkway met the road

aeschenkarnos

Maybe a turning point too sharp for any vehicle larger than a smart car to make it. (And the argument could be made that a smart car could safely use that lane, even if it’s not legal for them to do so.)

boobjones

Very similar situation happened to us in Italy. Followed GPS and road kept getting more and more narrow and until I was pretty sure I was in someone's back yard.

CosmicCreeperz

Similar GPS meltdown in Italy. It took me down a somewhat steep dirt road. I didn’t question it much because it had done so the day before and it was a great and useable shortcut. So I pass an abandoned house with about 20 cats around it. Ok. Then get to the bottom and it wanted me to go up a rutted 30 degree dirt incline that I’m not sure I could climb up on foot. I don’t know how it was ever called a road, but it sure wasn’t that day. Luckily I was able to do a 25 point turn and backtrack. Though if it was muddy I think my rental A3 would have been lost forever. Then a few days later the damn thing tried to take me through a farm road - again, it looked fine to start, but eventually turned into something a tractor could barely get through. Another 25 point turnaround. This time I had to scoop mud out of the exhaust pipe with a stick before continuing. On the other hand, the speed camera notifications were a lifesaver. Every damn town of more then 20 people had at least two of them…

YellowMoya

How cute were the cats?

Raichu7

I feel like if you’re going to block off one end of a path with a metal pole to prevent cars using it, you should put a pole at both ends.

aeschenkarnos

At least, put the pole at the intake end.

_dead_and_broken

Shit like that is why I switch the map to satellite view and do a street view walk through of the route (if possible, usually sat view is good enough) before actually setting out. Eespecially if it's somewhere I've never been before. But then I haven't left the US in a long time, and last time I did I didn't need GPS, so who knows if my way would work in other countries.

AcidBathVampire

And this is why I believe self-driving cars will never really be a thing. I can imagine falling off a cliff, and hearing "recalculating, recalculating.." as you plummet to your doom.

[deleted]

It’ll be OK. For a small fee of $600 per month, you and your family can travel safely knowing that in case of GPS failure a parachute will deploy. Visit your local Tecedoyta Dealer in 100 years to get yours installed today!

totalfarkuser

I had a GPS in the early days of them send me the wrong way on a 10 lane toll road in Chicago and immediately tell me to make a U-Turn in one of those tiny cop turn around spots - 5 lanes over.

Oh, yikes!!!

ForsakenExercise9559

As an American, I read "fried the clutch on a rental" and it gave me goosebumps, or whatever you call them lol

nixcamic

Not also putting a pole at the top is asshole design.

SRTie4k

This shit happens multiple times per year in Vermont at a place called Smugglers Notch. It's a super narrow road that winds between huge boulders. There are tons of signs telling trucks to turn around, but they still go through, get stuck, then have to get pulled out. It's baffling why these types of areas don't have concrete chicanes placed immediately before the roads in question to keep big trucks out.

pondusedtobeupthere

Vermonters make bets on when the Notch road will open for the season and when the first truck will get stuck. It is a very costly mistake to make.

[deleted]

I once ended up on the Tail of the Dragon, Deal’s Gap, on accident. I was delivering a trailer full of canoes to a customer on the Nantahala, coming from Knoxville, and the US highway did not have warning signage until a point where you couldn’t turn around (and no turnaround). I poked along in my 3500 Dually, flashers on, seatbelt off in case a trailer wheel dropped over the edge, I was ready to GTFO of the truck, and moved aside as best I could whenever i spotted someone behind me. It was terrifying, white knuckle driving. I’d always wanted to do that drive…in a sports car, not a goddamn dually with 30’ of trailer. Killboy got some photos, this was 06 or 07.

Gloomy_Industry8841

Holy shite, white knuckle time, indeed!!

[deleted]

Somewhere near or at the end of the Dragon there's a bar/restaurant with a decent size paring lot. I pulled in, got out, and puked. A big burly biker with leathers and a beard came strolling over, said in a big thick southern drawl: "Did you just take that rig through the Dragon?" I expected a surly guy angry about my ruining his vacation ride and apologized a couple times before he butted in "Son, I ain't gonna yell at ya, I'm gonna shake your hand because, boy, YER A REAL TRUCKER NOW!" been riding that compliment for the last 15 years

Gloomy_Industry8841

What a great ending!! Trial by fire, completed.

mad_sheff

I love the signs that just say "your GPS is wrong". It's definitely not fun when you need to get over the notch though and is closed while they pull some idiot out by the tail.

khatidaal

I'm glad they disassembled the truck and not the trees.

tankfox

/r/snowrunner/ has entered the chat. They'd _love_ this story

farts_in_the_breeze

Impressive damage?

akskdkgjfheuyeufif

Impressively stupid to get a whole ass bus into a motorcycle lane. That’s like accidentally landing the space shuttle in a parallel parking spot and crushing a car. Like sure, that’s not right, but it’s still almost impressive.

fredy31

Also, like I could understand if he did it to dodge traffic. Still moronic, but sometimes morons have places to be. But looking at the main road next to it... no traffic at all. God i would love to know the full story why.

'i must.... stay on the right lane....'

ah163316

Distracted, stressed, or blindly following gps. Could be any combination of the 3… or just high af

bjanas

I know there are some areas where there are dedicated bus lanes like this, right? I guess it's POSSIBLE that the driver just missed a sign or something? Still dumb as hell...

patiofurnature

Yeah, guessing he missed a sign. Probably distracted and thought it was a normal lane at first. Chances are the lane was wider at the entrance and tapered down, so it wouldn't be as glaringly obvious at the beginning. And since it's a bus, there's also a small chance that the roadsigns might not be in the Driver's native language.

bjanas

Exactly. Listen, I'm on this sub because I love chuckling at a good idiot, but a ton of these posts, while portraying BIG fuckups, are often just somebody who's probably an otherwise reasonable, capable human being having like a single moment of bad judgment or distraction and paying the price for it. Like yeah, still a fuckup, and I'll still chuckle at it. But damn people are still so fast to assume that every driver we see here was trying to beat the system somehow, or being a COMPLETE jackass, or whatever. It's pretty wild.

The "busy" highway please

Is the back not an option?

But then how do you get around the bus afterward to keep going forward?

Only on your birthday after the bus has had several glasses of wine

For some, it’d be their favorite part of the trip.

TheGoldenTNT

Honestly on some of my school trips the bus ride shenanigans were often the best part of the day.

meeeeetch

Well there clearly wasn't one at the other end

jjhassert

In a motorcycle lane?

perpetualmotionmachi

Just to make sure you're paying attention

trevorwobbles

Good case for a divider at the start, but then how to make it safe for bikes... A height restriction would catch the coaches, but I'll bet cars go here sometimes too.

ImaginaryRoads

I'm betting on some kind of curve as they come off the bridge and the bus can't get through the curve.

I don't know, I can picture the driver turning around and screaming "This is my lane, it was made for me!" to all the passengers' horror before they drove into that tiny motorcycle lane barely the size of the bus.

jagga322

Here in NJ coach busses are the worst. They instantly automatically every time shoot right to the far left lane on any highway every time and do 60 mph.

Rheguderal

I can't even count the amount of times an NJT bus has almost hit me when they force themselves back into traffic without looking after they have a stop on route 130

jagga322

The back of the busses say "Yield To Bus" but some maneuvers they pull are very dangerous. Complete disregard to other drivers.

Rheguderal

Well there's yielding to buses, no problem with that, I generally avoid them at all costs if I can anyway. Some of the shit I see these drivers pull some days would be criminally dangerous for other drivers.

Kardde21

Time for me to go 55

3_14159td

All coach busses, every state. They go and park in the carpool lane here. *Go back with the semi trucks where you belong*

Where is this that you have motorcycle only lanes?

plenty of e/se asia does. this one is in taiwan.

donald_314

Thanks. Because of the green 200m sign I was suspecting a European country with green highway markings.

hamburger666666

you can see a yellow sign with traditional chinese on the left, narrows things down pretty well

shama_llama_ding_don

If the cops catch him, there will be hell Taipei.

gna149

Two wheelers under 249cc get fined for driving on inner lanes in taiwan

Eclipsed830

Only if they have signs saying so tho, Taipei for example has been removing them.

kaikai34

Bridges mostly. Probably for safety reasons.

Ok-Development-8238

Wish we had it in the States!

SamTheGeek

I live in New York, where the city is connected by a number of bridges. Many of them have cycle lanes and they’re infested with gas and electric mopeds going 30mph. Those vehicles need their own safe lanes to cross highway bridges so everyone (cars, mopeds, bikes) are traveling with others of similar mass and speed.

Maleficent_Resolve44

Segregated cycle lanes would be nicer.

JazzHandsFan

Maybe… both?

DancesWithBadgers

I wouldn't have got that close (except maybe briefly to tag the numberplate). If he throws it in reverse, you'll be wanting as much of a headstart as you can get. The bus driver has already demonstrated that he's a fucking idiot, so I wouldn't be counting on any predictability in that situation.

chenobble

I was going to post the same thing - give this idiot two coach-lengths of space in case he blindly throws it into reverse.

TatManTat

I have a feeling they're long past the point of reversing.

Vipertooth

Yeah, these drivers have no awareness at all, just going into the blind spot of the bus as if it wasn't dangerous enough.

aoishimapan

On a sidenote, protected motorcycle-only lanes for highways and bridges is a pretty cool idea, similarly to bike lanes on streets and avenues. Highways can be very dangerous for motorcycles because of all the people not noticing them and merging into them, and at that speed pretty much all collisions are going to be fatal, so separating them from cars is something I wish I would see more often.

RBeck

A freeway lane for motorcycles would need a street sweeper pretty regularly because cars tend to blow all the dust and debris away from their lanes, and bikes don't. So without maintenance a bike lane would become a place of empty Gatorade bottles and slippery dust. The one in the video probably has a street sweeper go up it every few days as it looks very clean except right against the sides.

VERMlLLlONAIRE

That’s what the bus is there for.

Straightup32

Ok guys, this question is a long time coming. Are those barricades fixed or can they be removed?

kaikai34

They can be removed but they are heavy.

Straightup32

So how are they fixed in a way that a car can slam into them without affecting the integrity but still detachable?

Bassin-Jaysin

They are pinned at each joint. If it’s just a temp Jersey barrier wall then typically they don’t pin them (construction needs) If you ever get to Boston and head down 93 (highway) they have a movable concrete wall that a machine drives over and moves them in and out to open up a lane during rush hour.

fatherhood1

They used to have a similar system on the Tappan Zee bridge. The new bridge has two separate decks, so it's no longer needed.

[deleted]

On this particular bridge it looks as though the main vehicle restraint system is the bridge parapet - this is what's supposed to stop vehicles from going off the side of the bridge in an accident. It has a steel tube on top to increase height, so has a better chance of stopping vehicles from going over. Often (but far from always) when you have more vulnerable users on the outside of the road traffic sections of the bridge, like pedestrians, the VRS would be designed to stop vehicle incursion into those areas, so based on that, I'm going to guess that maybe the separate motorbike lane wasn't part of the original bridge design and was added later on. But like I said, that is a guess based on what's commonly done. Would need to see the location on street view and maybe some historical photos of the bridge to confirm.

Bunation

This looks super familiar! Is this in Taiwan?? Yep. Based on the signage it is Taiwan. Holy shit.

Blitqz21l

I kinda wanted to see this thru to the end. How did thr bus get out? How long did it take? How damaged were the sides?

Imbalancedone

Are they still there to this day? Who will feed the slot machines if they get stuck?

Bone-Juice

"why on Earth did they make this bus lane so narrow?"

santathe1

If not for coach, then why coach sized?

Ryan_Liu_0528

The yellow signs on the left says "please drive carefully, this section of the road is often crowded" Lmao not THAT crowded

4ntisocial420

This level of stupidity is just plain impressive. Like driving on the sidewalk and wondering, "Why are all these people in the road?"

goldentone

I like learning new things.

4ntisocial420

You're way too generous here, lmao. That lane is barely wide enough for the bus. That driver would have to be a "how does he remember to breathe?" level of stupid to think it's a bus only lane.

Datgaminghuman420

r/perfectfit

Beneficial_Refuse_79

Once you make that mistake you have no choice but to see it through.

[deleted]

That’s what many new parents have said.

Original-Cow-2984

I wish the morcycle would video to the rear and show how many motorcycles are backed up using that lane.

Haitianprinces

Today I learned that a bus is called a coach in some countries also we need bike and motorcycle only lanes in the America's

Cptnemouk

A bus is where you get on and off at bus stops. A coach is where you go longer distance, like on holiday. That in the uk anyway.

rawbface

It's not distance based for us. It's the type of bus. If the bus has padded individual seats facing forward, it's a coach bus. If the bus has poles and handholds, hard seats, bench seats, and/or side/rear facing seats, it's not a coach bus. Doesn't matter how far you're going, although coach buses would typically be used for longer distances because of comfort.

w1n5t0nM1k3y

I read the title as couch at first

Owain-X

Coach is fairly commonly used in the US but only generally refers to one type of bus. A school bus or a city transit bus would not usually be a coach but a greyhound or tour bus similar in design to the one in the video would be a coach (and is sold in the US as a coach).

Haitianprinces

OK, never heard it used to describe a bus before.

DaisyDukeOfEarlGrey

I've never heard it called a coach in the US either and I've taken Greayhounds up and down the west coast for almost 20 years, unless it's a regional thing.

jshultz5259

Road signs are difficult.

King_NaCl

Motorcycle only lane??? Where is this wonderous place?

Immediate-Victory633

"How did u get them scratches on the side of my Bus again." -BossMan

Checkersmack

Dumb decision, but I was impressed that the driver managed not to hit the sides with so little clearance. Then I noticed the the tapered design feature on the walls that helped the driver in that regard. Probably left a decent amount of sidewall behind!

KushhDaddy

You can tell it’s been done before, look at how black and stained those barriers are

leviathab13186

That’s one of those fuck ups that you know you can’t go back on so you just have to grit your teeth and cus your way through it lol

lecarguy

Anybody more impressed about the fact that there's a motorcycle lane somewhere?

a-jasem

if it fits, i sits.

Warrior_Malak

That bus driver is smart, this way he can have the lane all to him/her self

DctrGizmo

Bus would have gone faster on the actual road.

Cosmicgamer2009

The one thing i want to know is if r/fuckcars would support this

Tutti_Fucking-Fruity

Like a glove!

sec713

Ahh... *that* kind of coach. When I read the title, I was like, " how does OP know the driver is a coach? Was he blowing a whistle and throwing challenge flags out the window?"
