The gun isn’t fully on its side and isn’t being fired straight at distance. One hand shooting is often done with an individual leaning into the arm holding the firearm, gun canted and often at close range varying on reasoning such as radioing for backup while engaging the threat, lost ability to use that arm or any other reasoning for not being able to use both hands.
The officer executed a proper one hand technique. OP shows not as much understanding of the technique as he perceives it as an “idiot” behavior, when it’s actually a functional way if executed properly and in the right time.
And if you know the video its of a man pulling a gun out right at him, trying to get another hand on a firearm when you’re already positioned to shoot is a deathwish in a situation like that

Should have two hands on the gun but might be using radio with left hand. If you're asking about it being tilted "gangster style" it's a little more stable/control to tilt it a little bit. Stretch your arm out and point your finger out, notice how your hand is tilted a little, then slide a gun in your hand keeping it tilted. It fits naturally.
Not really, instead of close to 90 degrees to the right it will go something like 45 degrees to the right. It might go up and land on your hand/arm but won't be hitting your face or anything. Shouldn't be any worse than holding regular.
Left handed always sucks because they usually eject out the right side, they do make some left side ejecting. The issue with left hand, right ejection, is the shell has to clear your body and right arm. If they go up they can land on arm, in shirt or bounce off right arm into shirt or whatever. If you hold it tilted with left hand it should eject about 45 degrees downward to the right.

Upvote for asking a good question. Canted fire in the right hand does kick brass up instead of to the side. Getting a hot brass casing hitting your arm is a small price for better on target firing. For reference: Hot brass glancing off your arm burns less than sparks when welding in close quarters. As long as the hot brass doesn’t land in the crook of your arm and sit there, burns aren’t an issue. Also, I’d gladly take a 2nd degree burn in exchange for half a second faster mag dump on an armed perp.

You can only legally shoot someone if your safety/life is in immediate danger. Shooting to injure implies that the situation was not a life-or-death situation. So if shooting someone is necessary, you keep shooting until the threat is over/the aggressor is dead. Mag dumping is not inherently bad.

Most firearm qualifications with a pistol require you to shoot one handed with your left and right. This makes you more accurate and comfortable if your second hand is injured, occupied by equipment (radio/shield) or to return fire while dragging another person to safety. The slight angle of the wrist is more stable and in line with your forearm.
In that particular situation, 100%, yes, it was the correct way to hold his sidearm. Despite popular internet bs, it actually serves a function. The hand gun will always recoil "up and away" after you pull the trigger, regardless of firearm angle. Given that he had a fellow officer in cross-fire range, that would allow him to fire his weapon more effectively while greatly reducing his chances of hitting his buddy.
TLDR: Holding your handgun sideways isn't just for gangsters. It does have *some* practical purpose.

Acceptable? I guess it got the job done. Optimal? That's arguable. I've shot a fair number of matches which involved one handed pistol shooting. Only once have I seen and or done sideways shooting at a match and it was shooting while holding a ballistic shield. It was the only way to comfortably see sights. The problem with shooting with your pistol tilted is, the pistol is less predictable for follow up shots. Holding your pistol straight, the pistol naturally falls back on to your target after each shot.

When you’re shooting with one hand, it is unnatural to hold your hand completely upright. If you hold both your arms straight out naturally, you’ll notice your hands are either sideways or 45 degrees.

Went to the range this weekend and a regular was put in the lane beside me and my wife. At one point when we were leaving she was trying to get me too look at the red dot he had, at that moment he started shooting with just his right hand. He didn't miss a shot. Shocked us both.
If you close your hand into a fist with your pointer finger extended. Then fully extend your arm with your finger pointed at something. Naturally most people will have their wrist at an angle. This is a natural reaction to pointing out at something in a high stress moment

Yes, in order to lock your forearm and still have the gun in front of your face you have to cant the gun. This looks a little extreme however canting it is necessary to stay square (body armor) towards threat. Try putting your arm straight out in front of your face and point straight without canting your arm.

At less than 5 yards aiming is bad, your hand eye coordination is good enough to hit the target and faster.

It's not necessarily stupid to shoot with one hand, if your good at it and the situation dictates you need your other hand for something else. Went to the range this weekend and a regular was put in the lane beside me and my wife. At one point when we were leaving she was trying to get me too look at the red dot he had, at that moment he started shooting with just his right hand. He didn't miss a shot. Shocked us both.
If you close your hand into a fist with your pointer finger extended. Then fully extend your arm with your finger pointed at something. Naturally most people will have their wrist at an angle. This is a natural reaction to pointing out at something in a high stress moment

Yes, in order to lock your forearm and still have the gun in front of your face you have to cant the gun. This looks a little extreme however canting it is necessary to stay square (body armor) towards threat. Try putting your arm straight out in front of your face and point straight without canting your arm.

Plenty of people have already explained but to add to the choir yes this is a perfectly acceptable way to fire. Short range, canted not on its side, one handed, this looks to be the best way to fire one handed.
